I've been a Dreamhost customer for 1 year 6 months 29 days. I signed up because DH had the unlimited domains feature, and it was obvious that the owners/founders knew their stuff and weren't afraid to roll out innovative features that other hosts were charging unnecessarily for.

However for the past 3 months, I've been utterly disappointed with the performance(slow Web page load times, SCP session breakdowns) and email problems that have been cropping up.

I don't want TBs of monthly bandwidth and 60GB of disk space I'll probably never use more than 10% of. I just want decent page load speeds, little downtime and no email hangups (lost / delays). Granted you have your own autonomous system (AS) and it's a traffic volume game, but I though DH was still small enough for profitability to matter ?

You also need to take into account your non-US customers timezones. Doing a maintenance at 10pm PST is 10am-2pm in South/Asia.

As it is, I'm scouting for another host that'll serve up decent performance. And I'm prepared to pay a premium of up to 2x for the same features DH offers. Your product positioning has too big a price gap between Code Monster and Strictly Business. And I'm not even sure the same set of problems will go away if I upgrade to a higer plan.

So unless you do a review of your network(server/database farms, filers, LAN,routers) and solve the problems at a higer level, you'll continue fighting fires and will lose customers like me in the coming year when their contract ends (incidentally, there is now a trend towards monthly contracts by some hosts and that's going to be one of my benchmarks for from now on - way better than any money-back guarantee).

Lastly, this is year 2006, what is DH still doing with Cisco routers ? Move on to Junipers please. (Disclaimer: no financial incentives for me to say this).

Ok I have been with Dreamhost since January after dropping everything at another hosting company that shares the building with DH. I never had problems like this with my old host, BUT I never got support even close to what Dreamhost has given me. A usually quick response to any email or support request. The "Happy" little automatic messages that are everywhere when you do something lets me know that what I just asked it to do will be done in about 10 minutes from when I clicked the button and that it will be done. My old host I was lucky to have it done within 24 hours.

I picked Dreamhost because:
1. It was affordable
2. It came highly recommend from a lot of people
3. It offered everything I needed and a bunch of things that I didn't know I wanted (Ruby on Rails).

I have 4 domains now and I will be staying with Dreamhost throughout the problems, because I've got more ideas and hosting through Dreamhost is the only way I can see them ever becoming a reality. Eventually I am going to give MediaTemple a shot, because it is also highly recommended, but I still won't be leaving Dreamhost.

Might as well ask... any recommendations on an alternative to this song and dance? Maybe one with better music? Or at least one with music?

A few months ago (Yes, it has been this bad for this long) I switched my mail over to be hosted with gmail you can still use yourname.com check it out.

https://www.google.com/a/

I did this because my wife (The most casual Internet user you know) got completely fed up with calling me to see what is wrong with the email/website this time. I thought it was going to be a temporary thing but I can tell you now I will not switch my email back after all of this. Now if only Google would do Rails hosting...

I recommended DH to many of my colleagues because up until this point (rather this year) I was a giant fan. I am completely embarrassed that I ever did this and quite frankly you have make ME look bad. I will never put a dent into the bandwidth or disk space that I have but I do expect the reliability to return. If some reasonable compensation does not come from all of this I will be taking my (hopefully refunded) $100+ somewhere else. It is not reasonable to wait these amounts of times for very basic and simple webpages to be served up.

I hope DH can fix the network within 48 hours, or DH will lose a lot of customers.
Now I'm look for a backup hosting myself.

I've always appreciated your transperency on these matters; hopefully I can start appreciating your quality of service again soon. And really, your prices are so good it's hard to complain. Maybe this regular downtime warrants some compensation though, for all your customers... I don't know.

Still a fan (just)!

The funny thing is my traffic is actually increasing these days :)
Though files served are mainly big MP3's, some are tens of megabytes ea.

Would you like to check? ;) www.stereo.org.ua (make a <a href="http://www.stereo.org.ua/index.php?searchword=mp3&option=com_search" rel="nofollow">site search for "mp3"</a> to go directly to articles containing the stuff)
