Server ‘pizarro’ has gone splat.
Posted (September 18th, 2006 at 6:30 am PST) by KarlMoving over to new hardware now. Will update when this is complete.
Update 8:51 AM PST Pizarro’s been up for a fair bit now, but we’ve been busy cleaning up a few stray issues. The majority of sites on pizarro should be up now, and we’re working on the handful of stragglers.

Yeah, I was planning to start work on a client’s site today and this has kind of put paid to that idea.
I’ve been moving sites one at a time to WestHost. The experience has been pretty good.
Well, that explains it. I have, however, been getting lots of users signing up from the yahoo.com.hk TLD the past few days - I figure it’s got to be spam, but then a few more people signed up with gmail accounts. All the names seem unique, but I’m probably wrong. Hope Pizarro is fully redundant (RAID) - that setup helped me last week when our server at work decided to pop. ;(
Is pizarro up now? If so, please let us know what the new SSH host key is. I’m seeing bc:f9:b5:55:4b:2c:07:d7:42:8c:00:2a:8d:f0:2c:de, but I’d like to double-check that before I actually change the key in my known_hosts file. Thanks!

You know, it is one thing to voice your displeasure over Dreamhost’s service, or even to point to that you are leaving Dreamhost.
It is another thing entirely when you give the name of (and tacitly recommend) other webhosts.
Why don’t you learn some tact.
Ya know I am begining to wonder how many of these people that suggest other webhosts and the constant displeased BS about not being able to log into the panel and such are really other web hosting company’s staff members spreading fud.

Hah! I’m a straggling site!
(I don’t mind, cause this is the first major issue I’ve had during this whole downtime issue). I just thought it was funny that I’m a straggling site.
You probably right Granville
I got to say that I always had great service from the DH staff.
i just realized pizzaro was a server name and i’m on pacman. i’m just curious why my site is still super slow and the members can’t seem to log in from 30 minutes to a couple of hours. if you can catch the site up just read what the people have to say in the chatroom…
clawbound : where did everyone go?
sinisteria : is this site always this slow?
sinisteria : is this site always this slow?
clawbound : hi ppl
i need to know what’s up. thanks.
mysql isnt working again. I am really gettin irritated. Sure, I can let some of the times go, but how long is this going to go on for?
yeah, i’ve tried contacting dreamhost from their main site. i’m about to lose my mind here. i’ve been on for a few hours now waiting for my site to come back… to no avail. i can’t work on anything and my visitors/regulars are sick of it as much as i am.
okay this is a bit insane. i’ve been waiting for it to come up. it came up for a few seconds, then froze again. i’m thinking this is a big internet prank and i’m supposed to win a lot of cash… like boiling point. you guys waiting for me to punch the computer screen or something?
missvondollie : Yea, the webhost has some part in that.
clawbound : wow, it’s really quiet in here
missvondollie : Yep =]
clawbound : oh, okey
missvondollie : No its not always this slow, The webhost is fixing their hardware.
lady__darkness : holy crud that took me ages to log in :/
Where can I see which machine my different site are hosted on? regnbagsmassan.nu seems to be down
My site has been slow for over a week now, no one has contacted me with an answer and this website Im doing is for a MAJOR client could make or break me. Im fed up with DH. Time to move
Yeah, how do you know what server you are on? My sites have been going down all night and all day - every time it’s “fixed” it goes down again. If I wasn’t doing anything with it, it wouldn’t go down lol. *pulls hair*
To find out what server you’re on:
https://panel.dreamhost.com/index.cgi?tree=users.users&
Your server is the name in the “Machine” column.
anyone having problems with grappa? Im ready to SCREAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Why is it that a server dies almost every day?
Looks like mines stragling too. Or maybe struggling? Either way it’s all good with me. Dreamhost has been great to me.
> Why is it that a server dies almost every day?
Last I heard, we had something like over 600 different servers - most of them being shared hosting servers. If we were to have one downed server per day, that’d still account for a bit under 2 years of time time between hardware failures.
In reality, most servers have no major hardware problems for a long, long time while others go south pretty soon after deployment (which is why, if they continue to have problems, we simply replace the hardware and start fresh). The occasional powercycle is more common, and has less to do with the quality of the server as it does the make-up of what customer sites are on it. In those cases, we move those people off or require them to fix their scripts.
Either way, it helps to keep in mind that we’re not a tiny provider any more. We have tens of thousands of customers and hundreds of servers. If anything goes wrong, a lot of people are going to notice it and be impacted just based on the numbers alone - even if most people never have a problem.

dreamhozed again and again. get with it!
Hi I’m not actually Bryce but looks like cookies got screwed up! Its kind of freaky
so funny, they strive on service and uptime but they have their own hate website
http://www.dreamhost-sucks.com/
Im starting to rethink my decision
I scanned through that Dreamhost sucks website - I can’t imagine anyone would take it very seriously considering the incredible amount of spelling mistakes on the front page. It’s sad that someone has nothing better to do with their time than create a website bashing a company - when it’s obvious the creator is not intelligent enough to operate a website, let alone understand the goings-on of a hosting business.
I’ve been with so many hosting companies over the last decade I have lost count. Even with the issues of the last couple of months, Dreamhost by far has the smallest amount of downtime I have ever encountered with a host - including such reputable names as rackspace and verio. I’ve also never waited longer than 24 hours for a support response, nor has any support response not been thorough, precise and easily understood.
I am ‘one of those people’ that actually consumes the resources allotted to me in my plan. Unlike every other host I have been with, Dreamhost has never given me guff about the amount of CPU load or traffic my sites consumes.
Jeff’s previous comment about the amount of downtime is a very valid point, and one all of you folks should consider reading again until you understand it. One enormous and often overlooked benefit of Dreamhost is the constant communication with their customers. No other host, and I mean none, provides customers with the level of status updates that we are able to find here. The reason we hear about so much server downtime is that the fine folks at Dreamhost actually let us know about it - unlike the vast majority of other hosts whom would resolve the issue and not notify anyone it ever took place.
http://www.dreamhost-sucks.com/ hasn’t been updated since April. Looks like they ran out of things to say. The BBB F rating they seem to advertise on their site is completely irrelevant, I remember a someone explaining that meaning and that it doesn’t represent the actual hosting very accurately.. ![]()
Seriously, who buys hosting based on a BBB rating?
Man, this sucks i’ve lost business because of DH being down, FIX YOUR DAMN PROBLEMS!!!
The BBB rating is wrong anyway - it is now C.
Lost business on a $8/month web host… har har har, you’re kidding - right?
Can I point and call you funny names?
The default for php error_reporting is this:
// Report all errors except E_NOTICE
// This is the default value set in php.ini
error_reporting(E_ALL ^ E_NOTICE);
Currently it’s set to E_ALL.
Could somebody fix that please?
I am opening another ticket since my original ticket has been ignored for 12 hours.
“Please remember, posting in the comments here IS NOT an official way to contact DreamHost.”
The web panel is not working either.
Ticket Subject Message Age
#1523565 Pizarro PHP Error Reporting 26 secs
#1523162 Pizzaro Error Reporting 8 hours 37 mins
#1522192 Site Errors On Pizarro 21 hours 20 mins
I just put in another ticket for the same thing. 21 hours and I am still getting NOTICES on my site. It doesn’t sound that bad but it blows up the layout in IE really bad. 21 hours and no response from DreamHost.
“Seriously, who buys hosting based on a BBB rating?”
Actually, the truth is that the BBB is very, very easy going on businesses, and they tend to side with a business whenever possible. Although they give time limits, the BBB allows a business to refute the claim at any point in time. However, the person who gets screwed has a time limit and if that very short time limit passes, the person has no further opportunities to complain about the company on the same issue.
I put in a complaint with the BBB about a company. The company responded over a year later. The BBB then gave me 1 month from the date of their letter to reply to the companies point of view. Unfortunately, the letter did not get to me until 2 and a half weeks after it was dated, which gave me a week and a half to send the letter from Ontario, Canada to the middle of nowhere Florida. The catch is that the letter was sent to me 1 week before Christmas - no way it was getting back to Florida on time.
Instead I sent an e-mail to the head of the department at the Florida BBB; it was met with no response, and my case was closed. The company then started to resolve BBB issues from up to 2 years past, so they were able to get a clean record because nobody responded back after making complaints 1 to 2 years ago.
Although this has nothing to do with Dreamhost, I just wanted to point out that when people say ignore the BBB, they are right in a sense. The BBB is too easy on business and always favour business. If you see a negative BBB rating, it is always 10 times worse. If you see a positive BBB rating, do some further investigation, since it means nothing.
