Filer moving (Done!)

Posted (September 21st, 2006 at 1:41 pm PST) by Kelly

One day I will remember to post this in a timely manner.

More filer moving! We have to continue our efforts to optimize our rack space to continue to feed your ravenous apatites for disk space. The downtime window starts at about 10pm tonight and goes until 1am at the latest. This will affect all clusters, however it should only affect your websites for a about 30 minutes if you happen to be on the physical filer we are moving.

Sorry about the short notice.

All done! Everything went really smoothly, none of the filers were down for more than 10 minutes. We have actually been done for about an hour now.

What?

did you say the impact for me will be only when you move the filer for my cluster?

Do you have a rough order of moving? Might be nice to know when during that time I’d be interfered with..

Do you know if a lot of DH customers run businesses off of their hosting? I’m currently starting a business and am going to be hosting my applications on DH - but I’m a bit worried. My clients will not be happy with downtime in the middle of the evening. Maybe I should start looking elsewhere…

Hm, 30min downtime is quite a lot. ¿Couldn’t you have some spare system to replicate stuff just prior to these moves, and just substitute for the filer for the time it’s down? Suppose that would mean a bit of extra hardware lying around but… well, you could cut down these downtimes to… what, ¿30sec maybe?

Anyway, I’m glad you keep telling us things on some notice -however short would that be- instead of 5 days after it happened… if ever.

JarFill: Unfortunately it takes days upon days to move all of the data from one filer to another. We do that in the background as is, it is what is actually making all of the room for this rack-reshuffling. We’re increasing our density. I estimated thirty minutes as that it about the longest its ever taken us to move one. We’re getting pretty good at this! Only about 5 racks to go!

I liked it better when comments were disabled.
