Large Mail Queue for Filtered Mail

If you are using our filtering system you may notice some delays in delivery, we have checked to make sure we were not spammed and were unable to find any specific senders abusing the system so mail is being allowed through (none has been blocked or deleted so it should not be lost) but may be delayed by several hours. We apologize for the inconvenience that this has caused.

does filtered mail include aliases? What is considered filtered mail?

  2. jeff Says:

I’m assuming it’s the domains using the SPAM Filter which should only apply to mailboxes. Aliases shouldn’t be affected unless all delivery is backed up, and possibly not even then.

  3. Rob Says:

I’m confused. I gave up on DH for email a while ago because I was having so many problems. So, instead of having mailboxe here, I have all of my mail forwarded to a gmail address. That should mean this problem of filters, etc, shouldn’t affect me, right? But I know there are at least one or two emails I haven’t yet received this afternoon. What’s the story there?

  4. Andy Says:

Yeah, it’s the spam filter. All of my mail has been delayed today. While I appreciate these status updates, this one didn’t really explain what caused the delays.

This is causing a huge problem for our business based in Asia - all mail goes through Dreamhost. Our busy Friday has been badly disrupted. Not very impressive, Dreamhost. We can’t afford to have this situation!!

  7. Lee Says:

    >We can’t afford to have this situation!!
Then go ahead and pay 5x as much for a hosting provider with better uptime. It’s your business after all.

  8. LCALighting Says:

More than 6 hours later I’m getting my email. This sucks. What spam filters? How do I know I even have spam filters with them?

  9. JP Says:

I don’t use the spam filters, but work-related email that was being forwarded to me was rejected (apparantly invisibly) by Spamhaus filters for about a week. It appears my employer just thought I was being lazy.

Incidentally, people keep saying “pay five times as much for reliability” without giving names - please, I need to move at least one site to somewhere that wont crash, where the email works and database tables don’t just disappear (and where the back-ups work if they do). Give me names - there’s a billion hosts out there and they all say they’re reliable.

I still use dreamhost for all ’standard sites’, for which I don’t care if there is one or two hours down time here and there. For more serious projects you have to go for a dedicated hosting which goes for about 99$ and is harder to configure. In terms of dedicated hosting I have only tried RackShack (now ev1servers.net) which were very satisfying in terms of uptime and support. I case you are in germany avoid absolutely GreatNet. They are the worst on this planet. One day they cut my server and after a week of calls (none spoke english, only german and nobody knew what was up with my machine, they just ‘forwarded my claim’) I just decided to forget about them and get a hosting somewhere else (it was a dedicated machine). I can’t comment on Dreamhost dedicated servers.

Just keep in mind, that if you go for a dedicated server you will have to handle the same issues… yourself. That’s why I keep managed hosting (on dreamhost) for most of the sites. If there is a problem they care for it.

  11. Rassi Says:

I’d be cautious about using ev1servers - from what I’ve read they have a lot of spam problems and have been unresponsive. Were recently involved in spamming about the recent Spamhaus court decision…

Dreamhost should turn off comments in this blog.

  13. Beerzie Grouch Says:

Lee, I was not given the impression when I signed up that Dreamhost’s price structure equals weak service. If that is the policy, so be it. But let’s make it clear up front!

  14. cricket Says:

Dreamhost should turn off comments in this blog.

Heaven forbid a corporation hear complaints from paying customers. Perhaps, if you don’t agree with a criticism or it doesn’t apply to you, you should just let it go. Or are you suggesting that unless it applies to you or is expressed only as a minor dig (”I love DH, and would never leave, but pretty please consider fixing my down server?”) a criticism isn’t valid?

The people here clearly advertising for other service providers are posting (IMHO) in poor taste, but they represent (largely) real sentiment from a set of disgruntled DH paying customers. And since DH wants to keep customers, at least according to the official blog posts at blog.dreamhost.com, I don’t think they mind knowing explicitly which users are disgruntled and what other alternatives customers are considering.

  15. jess Says:

Dreamhost is oversold. At least they could admit it. We’ve been here long enough to know the service is worse.

  16. stoo Says:

Is this still an issue ’cause even though I turned my Junk Filter off hours ago, I’m still getting a wicked lag on incoming mail.

Please sort this out, trying to run a business with these kind of problems is becoming difficult.

  17. davidnunez Says:

Agreed. Still seeing lag today. wondering if this is still the same issue? DH people, I, for one, appreciate this update blog and the ability to comment. Please let us know what the status is w/ the mail filter lag.

  18. Dave Says:

Our email has been down or seriously delayed for two days now. Our site just shut down to top it off. Is DH trying to ruin my business. Callback requests are no good because I have been waiting for a callback for two days now. I should have gone on vacation this week. Thanks Dreamhost! More like a nightmare :(

  19. Justin Says:

I’ll echo the major frustration this is causing. I appreciate the effort and transparency the team has shown lately, but it’s been getting to the point where I don’t feel as if my Dreamhost account can be trusted to handle my very modest business needs. This saddens me, as I like the company and their policies, but I don’t think it’s unreasonable to expect core services such as e-mail to function reliably, and quickly.

  20. H Says:

Do you guys still experience delays in email? I sent a test email from Gmail to one of my (filtered) mailboxes on Dreamhost some 15 mins ago and it didn’t arrive yet.

    Argh :/

  21. Darren Says:

    Yup. Still lagging.

  22. lee Says:

    >people keep saying “pay five times as much for reliability” without giving names - please,

One of my friend uses and recommends the Speakeasy.net “Professional” service at $60/month.

    >Lee, I was not given the impression when I signed up that Dreamhost’s price structure
    >equals weak service

It’s not weak service at all. I use it and recommend it. It has excellent reliability for my needs. If you need higher reliability still, then go elsewhere and quit whining.

  23. dupola Says:

    oh my god.

  24. Gaston Says:

It’s a mess. Hours in delay is very bad to business sites.
