UPDATE on Snagglepuss
Posted (September 21st, 2006 at 11:30 am PST) by briansLooks like we have to move snagglepuss over to new hardware. Worst-case scenario the machine will be down for 60-90 minutes. Since we ” might ” have to replace the drives as well. However, BEST-case is the machine will be up within the next 20 minutes or so. Of course we are striving for the latter. Again, we sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

Yeah. It would be a cool addition to the DH panel to be able to see where your stuff was hosted too, because sometimes I’m not sure which hosts are are hosting mysql, apache, and various other services. Keep up the good work though!
Thanks for your apologize and I thank you guys for checkin´ out the Snagglepuss problem. Respect! ![]()
Looks like they had to replace the disks too.
is this the server that *all* databases are hosted on? because my sites seem ok at the moment, however, I can not get an export from a database through phpMyAdmin nor commandline.
Seems like you guys have a lot of hardware failures… is that normal?
“Seems like you guys have a lot of hardware failures… is that normal?”
I believe Jeff recently posted somewhere that they have over 600 servers… so even if one failed every day, it would still average out to close to two years per problem on each server. Of course, one server could have multiple problems and some could never have problems… but it puts it in perspective.
On the other hand, a host with one server could say they never had a single problem, until their first failure… but then they have failed 100% and every single customer is screwed.

It has become so. Anybody want to join me in a mass migration? I’m suggesting WestHost at the moment.
Is this problem related to the fact that a df -h says that most of the home mounts have 0 space remaining?
What’s so special about WestHost?
Aren’t all shared webhosts basically the same?
Sam, I am looking at the WestHost page as read this thread. So far, they look like the one for me.

This is already there. For regular domains, go to the Users tab and click Manage Users. This will list all of the user IDs you have set up and the server (”machine”) that they are on.
For databases, go to the Status tab and click MySQL Status. The servers that your database(s) are one are listed there.
Yeah, this is infuriating. My website is down yet again. I’m getting pretty pissed off about this.
Yes, this is a bit infuriating..
This was my biggest week, trafficwise, and now this.
It happens… it is the Internet.
You pay a couple hundred a year for hosting… what can you expect.
It´s getting really hard to keep with Dreamhost…
I like the guys, they seem to be good fellows, but we´are experiencing more and more problems each day.
I´m looking for a new host
Being spammed on a competitor’s blog doesn’t mean Westhost is better alternative.
Anyone that thinks leaving DH to go to a $3.95 host is an improvement, should probably have someone else do their thinking for them.
What would you do if your Lexus broke down? Upgrade to a Yugo?
We are way past 90 minutes now…
now update.
I’m trying to stick with DH, because there is a lot to like with these guys. At the same time, I have also been frustrated with all the downtime. For me, it’s been mostly email issues. I am checking out other providers, in case I need to switch quickly. I looked at WestHost, but I cannot figure out if they offer IMAP. That’s a big requirement for me and my clients who are out of the office a lot. Any suggestions?
Our site is hosted on century, but we haven’t received any email since 2:30 NY Time. Does anyone know if mail routs through this machine?
This happens way too often. I would migrate but I just don’t know any other hosts. I just don’t understand how a supposedly professional operation can let this happen so often. What about friggin’ backups, arrays, master/slaves, static copies, etc. etc.? I don’t even know what half of that stuff means but I do know that even if one server fails, it shouldn’t bring down people’s sites. This sucks.
I’m frustrated with DH too, but, c’mon, putting competitor’s info up on the DH forum is pretty lame. This is the second thread in which someone mentions Westhost. I’m wondering if the guy’s an intern there who posts their name on competitor’s sites for pizza money.
While I’m having loads of fun reading everyone’s comments, I’d much rather be reading them on my own website.
Can we get a new time update please?
Jason, AFAIK IMAP is not yet available on Westhost, though they will offer it soon. (I’m getting this from reading the forums over there.)
I use IMAP myself, so it’s a big issue for me as well.
Anyways, can someone explain something? There was a post earlier in which they said DH has over 600 servers, and to have one fail everyday isn’t that bad. Fine. But how come no matter what machine craps out, it takes my site with it??
According to my User and SQL info, I am not on snagglepuss, and yet my sites won’t load, and I get access MySQL server.
They said 90 minutes max and now this outage is over 2 hours. This type of downtime warrants a partial refund in my opinion. Is there no redundancy and failover in the Dreamhost architecture? There should always be a backup server in case one goes offline. I’d be willing to pay a few extra dollars a month to get this kind of service.
Please leave this site and the comments for what they are meant to be used for… Posting about DH problems. If you want to talk about new hosts, go to http://www.webhostingtalk.com.
As for there being hardware problems with ANOTHER server, just think about the number of servers (600 or so as previously stated) and the load they’re under constantly. YOU try to have a server running under this kind of load for over a year and not have any problems with it.
DH is doing the best they can as QUICKLY as they can. Most of the server “replacements” are being done because they can’t figure out what the problem is in 5-10 minutes and so they swap out the server to get people back up and THEN determine what the hardware problem is. So give them a break.
Rob, you are spamming a company that doesn’t even have IMAP? Is that because you’re dumb, or because you work for them and you’re dumb?
“There was a post earlier in which they said DH has over 600 servers, and to have one fail everyday isn’t that bad. Fine. But how come no matter what machine craps out, it takes my site with it??”
I didn’t say one fails every day. That was an example to put things in perspective. If you thought they really went down every day, your newest claim is that your server has never been up?
Rob - I just got off a chat with a WestHost person. They confirmed that IMAP is running, and they are in the testing phase. They are estimating a “few weeks”. I’m really not trying to bash DH here people! I like DH a lot, but there comes a time when all the downtime is going to make me look like an ass to my clients. For me, that time is coming up here soon.
And the hardware failures are scaring me a little bit. What kind of servers are they using? I have seen Compaq/HP DL 320’s, 360’s, 380’s run for years and years without failure. An occasional disk failure, but they were mirrored, so put in a new disk, and no downtime… I can’t talk too much, because I have never managed an environment that large. I think part of the issue is DH grew too big, too fast. I am hoping they get stuff a lot more stable in the next 2-3 weeks, or I have to look elsewhere. Oh, and I know someone is going to say “what do you expect for next to nothing”, or “shuddup and leave already”. Calm down skippy. One of the biggest reasons I picked DH was their features and IMAP email. I would expect better reliability from any host for this price.
Snagglepuss is back, no need to discuss anymore.
Dreamhost Uptime F’ing Sucks lately - lame!
Mike:
“Rob, you are spamming a company that doesn’t even have IMAP? Is that because you’re dumb, or because you work for them and you’re dumb?”
I wasn’t spamming. Nor do I work for them, or have even heard of them before this morning. Someone mentioned Westhost in a post, I had just been looking at the site (among others, busily working Google today.) I merely commented on his post.
Name calling, always a classy move.
“I didn’t say one fails every day. That was an example to put things in perspective. If you thought they really went down every day, your newest claim is that your server has never been up?”
I have no idea what you’re talking about. I asked a serious question. Why is my site down nearly every day, no matter what server is having problems? I am supposedly on Crenshaw and Jones. Why would Snagglepuss cause my site to be offline today, no FTP, and no MySQL access?
If someone can intellegently answer this, I would appreciate it.
Thanks for the update Jason.
I’m like you. I was totally happy with DH for almost a year. But the last month or two is killing me. The fact that I haven’t left yet is becuase I want to give them all the benefit of the doubt (or maybe it’s because I’m “dumb” as one poster would say…)
I keep hoping “this time will be it! she’ll be fixed for good!”
Actually we have over 1000 active servers so that changes the statistics a bit.
We have RAID 10 on our MySQL servers but in this case the RAID card itself died so we just moved the drives to a new server. If it had just been a matter of a drive dying it wouldn’t have been an issue.
Just FYI….
“I wasn’t spamming. Nor do I work for them, or have even heard of them before this morning. Someone mentioned Westhost in a post, I had just been looking at the site (among others, busily working Google today.) I merely commented on his post.”
So, you’re recommending people change to a host you know absolutely nothing about. Are you sure you want to deny being dumb?
“Name calling, always a classy move.”
I wouldn’t call identifying a spammer as a spammer as name-calling. And nothing is less classy than promoting a competitor on DH’s site. Get a clue before you lecture on class.
“Why would Snagglepuss cause my site to be offline today, no FTP, and no MySQL access?
If someone can intellegently answer this, I would appreciate it. ”
Who said there’s a connection? Does this look like the support ticket section of the control panel to you? If you have a support question, why not ask support? What did you think making yourself look stupid here would accomplish that asking support wouldn’t?
Sam, your repeated spamming of this blog to promote WestHost is not appreciated.
I was frustrated with and somewhat critical of DreamHost and contemplated moving… I decided not to because of the great responses I’ve received from customer service on unrelated issues lately, the fact that the communication here and at the DreamHost Offical blog has been top notch (and conciliatory), and because thing have gotten better for my sites and email.
Your constant promoting of this site is offensive, DreamHost will probably allow your comment because they’re pretty laid back, but as someone who in a fair minded way sees both the reasons for the valid criticism of the way DreamHost handled their network expansion **in the past** and the excellent stand out way DreamHost handles communication, I find your sales patter distasteful.
Just go already. And don’t let the door hit you on the way out.
“I wasn’t spamming. Nor do I work for them, or have even heard of them before this morning.”
So you were promoting a host that you know absolutely nothing about. Exactly how does that help anyone make an informed decisions about anything?
“Name calling, always a classy move.”
Don’t spam if you don’t like being called out on it. And nothing is less classy than promoting other hosts on DH’s site, so get a clue before lecturing others on class.
“Why would Snagglepuss cause my site to be offline today, no FTP, and no MySQL access?”
Who said it does? Does this look like the contact support form that’s in the control panel to you?
Dreamhost should disable comments again.
Thank you for your help Brasscrest! I must have overlooked it!
Dreamhost definitely has grown rather large rather quickly- something they ought not to be ashamed of! Understandably, this often means a lot of (unplanned) hiccups and a lot of (untrained) staff problems. In my opinion, they’re doing a good job and still giving a good product.
Not impressed, however, with guys coming here and spamming about other host companies. Seriously BAD for the company they’re trying to promote – that kind of thing does harm to the image, rather than bringing business.
Thank you for the update. 60-90 minutes won’t eat much of our time. As long as we know what’s going on it doesn’t matter.

I like that you report these all in a central place, but given that we’re all hosted on different servers, it would be cool if you guys could add some kind of login + filter so that we could opt to only see announcements that affect us
