Quick battery swap in a file server (Done!)

As long as I’m down here at 9:30am on a saturday… :)

I need to do a quick NVRAM battery swap in one of our file servers. This should only take about five minutes. (This battery is what keeps all of your data 100% safe in the event of a power outage or other hardware failure!)

Sat Sep 30 16:32:33 GMT [rc:notice]: The system was down for 188 seconds

Oh yeah. Your data is (even more) safe, once again!

Our site is down. When clicked on, it never comes up-no error pages are anything. It just stays on my homepage (google) and says “Done” at the lower left hand corner of the FireFox window. Same thing happens on IE, as well. Does this have something to do with the battery swap?

Well, it may have only been down for 188 seconds yesterday, but it’s been down for several hours today. The most frustrating thing is that I reported the outage and was later told that it had been resolved. But it hadn’t! So I had to re-report it, and have been waiting ever since for a resolution. This really sucks. I realize that I’m not paying a tremendous amount for hosting, but I need it to be more reliable. If this is the sort of service that I should expect at this price point, then I guess I need to look elsewhere.

have had problems with my sites all day yesterday, was told it was a network switch and the problem had been resolved only to find out later that it had not. Sites are still unreachable for hours today.

Same old, same old here. Their network is still fubar, even though the “Happy happy dreamhost team” says everything is just fine.

Get on your machine (if you can) and watch the load when your website stops working (if you don’t lose your ssh/telnet connection). Load will climb through the roof as processes are sitting in the run queue not able to talk to the network (or talking very slowly to it). The machine will be 95% idle.

Thank god we’re almost done getting set up on our new hosting provider.

is it just me or would phone support really help in times like that where servers are down?
