First chance to donate to Defective By Design and Santa’s Helpers.

Well, you missed it. We’ve switched charities now on the web panel to Defective by Design and Santa’s Helpers.

(We ended up getting $904.21 from 36 contributors for the WWF and $383.32 from 17 contributors for C3.) Whoa.

So.. I have 200GB and over 2TB of transfer. Is this a mistake?

  2. Jeremiah Says:

Not a mistake, they upgraded their plans today. Can’t believe it.

  3. Anonymous Says:

    But does your email work?

Not one of the first three comments to this post had a thing to do with the post. “Bob” responds to a post about charity with his own concerns, “Jeremiah”, at least try’s to provide some information, and “Bob”, well, “Bob” is just a self-absorbed idiot.

I think it is great that ~$1,300.00 was raised for charity; I’d lilke to think that the over 300,000 domains hosted at Dreamhost would generate a little more, though.

I think it is great too! Would love to see that # go higher myself.

Your “charity” solicitation is deceptive. There is no charity called “Defective By Design.” Any monies collected would go to the Free Software Foundation.

As a side note, some people (me for example) think DRM is a good idea, and it actively protects the business interests of our commercial products. But then, the FSF wants me to give away my product for free, or else go out of business. Soliciting money that will buy toys for impoverished children is all well and good, but perhaps it isn’t such a good idea to solicit money for a political group that wants to put Dreamhost customers out of business. Some of us have to work for a living, and can’t afford Richard Stallman’s blue-sky politicking.

technically, it’s the Free Software Foundation (FSF)

    The FSF
The Free Software Foundation (FSF) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization based in Boston, MA, USA. We rely on individuals like you to support FSF’s mission to preserve, protect and promote the freedom to use, study, copy, modify and redistribute computer software, and to defend the rights of Free Software users.

Defective by Design is one of FSFs campaigns.

Well, I’m not so sure about seeing FSF as a charity… more like an organisation of a different sort. But, I do understand that getting your customers to support it makes sense. The toys to kids is great too.
Although, let’s be honest, none of this is really ending world poverty – but, then I suppose not all charities need to be about that. But, sometimes I wonder if we ended poverty if we would still have to worry about things like FSF – we certainly wouldn’t have to worry about christmas gifts for children.

    hello

What’s the purpose of the solicitation? Are the people in Defective by Design or FSF running out of money? Where will the proceeds go? Is this to feed hungry mouth of people?
