Switch Troubles
A switch in our Alchemy datacenter is not communicating with the rest of our network. This is affecting the following servers:
alexander, baht, contra, smithers, lenny, mcclure, millhouse, willie, seamus, selma, abbazaba, defender, joust, altoid, lisa, skinner, chalmers, wiggum
We are investigating the cause now and will have an update for your shortly.
- UPDATE -
The switch had dropped many of the MAC addresses for the servers connected to it, leaving packets with nowhere to go. This has been resolved and a majority of the servers are back up. There are a few stragglers that are still being worked on. Thank you for your patience and everything will be up 100% again soon.

I am a brand new customer as of 10/3/06…..one day into this I have an outage. Do I already have to consider using the money-back guarantee? Had high hopes for dreamhost.
October 4th, 2006 at 5:54 am
well i’m also a new customer but i understand that we are dealing with computers and stuff
that always fail with any advise go ahead team you can fix this!!
and we can wait a litle bit don’t you?
October 4th, 2006 at 5:55 am
DreamHost is a fantastic hosting company, give them a little bit of time….
October 4th, 2006 at 5:55 am
cmonaghan, i have been with them for a few weeks and have had ups and downs, but overall it has been a good experience with DH and I wouldnt move just yet. Try it for a few weeks and see how it goes. Every host has issues, your just unlucky that it is so early.
October 4th, 2006 at 5:57 am
I’ve used DH on another site without trouble but just started a new site on 10-1. I was actually thinking I was lucky this happened early on for this site, before traffic starts coming.
October 4th, 2006 at 5:58 am
go easy, it’ll be back soon, switches are designed by humans you know
October 4th, 2006 at 6:03 am
Been with DH for a few months, and am very happy with the service. Any small glitch is taken care rather quickly. Give them a little time and all will be well.
October 4th, 2006 at 6:08 am
bazooka is unreachable as well.
October 4th, 2006 at 6:10 am
Every hosting has problems, there is no one perfect. I wish good luck to DH guys who is currently working on this issue!
October 4th, 2006 at 6:11 am
It’s quite annoying that there is no redundancy of the servers.
I have about 6 websites hosted with DH, and they are all on the same server (baht). When baht goes down, ALL my sites GO DOWN. That’s what’s annoying…
October 4th, 2006 at 6:20 am
Once again… :-/
October 4th, 2006 at 6:21 am
I was just wondering how I find out which server my website is on. I know its down, I’m just curious - thats all :D. Oh and give DH time, they always pull through!
October 4th, 2006 at 6:25 am
do we have an ETA? or is it just un-determined
October 4th, 2006 at 6:28 am
I’m brand new too (4/10).. just a couple hours my site birth in DH.. shine.. setup again.. more shine… setup again.. byar pett… going down
:(
October 4th, 2006 at 6:28 am
Been with DH for a little over a year, exceptional service, give em time and all that, etc… I’m also curious to know how I’d find out which server I’m on. Not that it’s been an issue til today.
October 4th, 2006 at 6:32 am
Alex, I feel for you. I am responsible for four different accounts, all on different servers. Three rarely have problems, but the other (the busiest of course) has been down every few days for ages now. And of course it is down right now, and the other three are up.
October 4th, 2006 at 6:33 am
Looks like they fixed it! At least for willie…
October 4th, 2006 at 6:33 am
@Chaly: So it was you who killed the switch?
Just kidding.
I must admit that I’m quite impressed how dreamhost notification system works and how fast one can gain information about what happened.
October 4th, 2006 at 6:34 am
Looks like there trouble brewing in the Simpsons family!!! I wonder which Simpsons fanatic chose these server names :p
October 4th, 2006 at 6:37 am
Not fixed, my site is still down (smithers)
im also a new customer, so far my email wasnt setup correctly, email password was rejected off an on for an entire day with no response from tech support and now this problem.
so far im not too impressed…
October 4th, 2006 at 6:41 am
The name of the ftp server (example: lisa.dreamhost.com) can give you the server name, so in this case, it’s lisa, which is one I’m on but this is the first outage I’ve had so I’m not too worried. You can also find this out in the dreamhost panel (panel.dreamhost.com). Go to users in the main menu, and manage users, and in the table that shows up, it will tell you what machine your users are on. Hope this helps!
October 4th, 2006 at 6:45 am
come on, guys, an hour is not “shortly”!
October 4th, 2006 at 6:52 am
My Site Up ! Thx Crew..
October 4th, 2006 at 6:52 am
I host a site that does live game logs on Twins games. Sunday, the server was down all day during the last and most exciting day of the season. Game 2 of the playoffs promises to be more of the same. I’m getting pretty tired of this.
October 4th, 2006 at 6:53 am
fix it
October 4th, 2006 at 6:55 am
How much times do they need to change a switch????
Why do they not have a redundant network???
October 4th, 2006 at 7:01 am
The server “Skinner” is down. My web is in that server and it doesn´t work
October 4th, 2006 at 7:09 am
Is bazooka down for anyone else?
October 4th, 2006 at 7:10 am
My sites at McClure are back up.
If you don’t know the name of your server, here is one way to find out.
At a command prompt ping your website (PING http://www.yourwebsite.com)- notice the IP addresss.
now at a command prompt type the following “nslookup ”
it should tell you the name of the server.

So pathetic. You guys were a great host for the last 7 years or so and this year you’ve gone to shit. Here’s a tip: STOP GIVING AWAY SO MUCH FREE STUFF WITH YOUR $8 PACKAGES. You obviously cannot handle the influx of customers you’re getting by being so cheap. Smarten the fuck up already and start treating your current customers the way you used to.
Unbelievable.
October 4th, 2006 at 7:13 am
great response time guys, quick resolution of the problem. thanks for that.
October 4th, 2006 at 7:13 am
Well, I was up. my site http://www.wallyx.com which is on willie is now dead
I am a new customer as of lastnight, what a way to start
I have faith that this will not be a common thing though.
October 4th, 2006 at 7:15 am
@ Roberto
They have over 1000 servers. To have a redundant network would require many more. That would mean more switches, more hubs, more controllers, more hardware to fail. And more cost to pass through to the customers . . .
It’s dirt-cheap shared hosting. If you need more reliability, then by all means go somewhere else and PAY MORE FOR IT!
October 4th, 2006 at 7:16 am
I’m alive again… that might mean lenny is back up, but not sure
October 4th, 2006 at 7:17 am
When meetup.com started to charge an insane amount of money and refused to revise their site to better support large communities (single flat forum made for a horrible experience and difficult to manage the content) we moved the discussion forum to dreamhost. Since we moved back in May, we had a lot of ups and downs, far more than I would have expected and reliability/uptime is still an issue for us.
May 17 - overall system performance and MySQL performance issues
June 12 - MySQL database unreachable
Aug 5 - MySQL permissions wacked
Aug 23 - NFS issues, server load high
Sept 9 - site unreachable for 3+ hours
Sept 30 to Oct 1 - site unreachable (switch issue)
Oct 4 - site unreachable
In and inbetween there’s been a few hiccups where I didn’t bother opening a ticket.
I’m crossing my fingers that the overall uptime will improve.
October 4th, 2006 at 7:43 am
anybody else having issues with “annie”?
October 4th, 2006 at 7:52 am
Anyone back up on wiggum? I’m still getting errors at home.mitchellandness.com
October 4th, 2006 at 8:07 am
Our site is back up. Thanks. (on lisa)
October 4th, 2006 at 8:07 am
Having rampart issues as well
October 4th, 2006 at 8:09 am
Hmm, Jalapa (hosts my three websites) seems to be in a bad shape as well. Nothing is really stuck but it takes forever to load two of those sites.
That kind of problem is rare on DreamHost though and the reaction time of their teams is fast, I’ve been hosting websites here for almost a year and this is a first for me.
Patience.
October 4th, 2006 at 8:20 am
Our sites still down on selma.
I think Selma is floating in and out of reality. I can see it - but I can’t ssh into it.
October 4th, 2006 at 8:25 am
Hang in there. DreamHost came highly recommended to me by a top notch consulting firm. Outages will occur, even at the best of companies. While it may no be a good beginning for new customers, one must look at performance over time.
October 4th, 2006 at 8:26 am
Wilmington is having problems partially, not sure what’s happening with my databases
October 4th, 2006 at 8:33 am
I can’t connect to seamus still.
October 4th, 2006 at 8:37 am
I can ssh into millhouse, but NFS seems to be down (I can’t get to my home directory).
October 4th, 2006 at 8:44 am
Topanga is down also!!

October 4th, 2006 at 8:52 am
I have been Dreaming since ‘02 and count on one hand the outages that affected me.
October 4th, 2006 at 8:53 am
Is anyone else on nelson ? Is everything working for you or do you have trouble as well ?
October 4th, 2006 at 8:53 am
Wow -I saw my sites as being slooooowww today but now it looks like my IMAP accounts aren’t loading *at all*!
Gonna have to file a support ticket for this..
October 4th, 2006 at 8:55 am
Y’know, I usually don’t chime in here but I’ve just GOT to ask.
Roberto H, what “top notch consulting firm” recommended DH? I’m a two year contract baby coming to the end here and though it’s been hard to get through the “noise” of apologists, there has been a consistent “signal” thread in DH experiences for the past +1 year that would have ANY responsible/knowledgeable source hedge DH recommendations with a “for non-critical hosting” clause. And of course, despite the lure of disk/bandwidth space, etc… *I’ve* warned many small businesses against the move for now. The Yahoos/Register.coms/more stable ISP supporting your tech needs are a better bet for reliability these days.
So, please. Check with them if you need to — I’m sure if they stand by this rec, they won’t mind you sharing their name in this forum. Who is this top notich firm? And what, if any, caveats did they provide?
Very Curious.
October 4th, 2006 at 8:56 am
Selma has been up and down for a month now with the last 2 weeks being the worst. I work as an IT administrator for a company that serves 5000+ users. I understand frustration and hardware issues. Unfortunately, however, there comes a time when you have to EAT into your bottom line to provide a reliable service. I’ve was with a previous host for 5 years and had 2 periods of “downtime”. I’ve been with Dreamhost less than a year and I’ve had 18 outages, some lasting for 48 hours.
Some people have mentioned the price. So they’re not too expensive, so what? I think I speak for everyone when I say that regardless of price, we would like to have reliability. If I purchased my service through Joe Schmuck’s backyard web hosting and beauty salon, I’d expect poor reliability. I purchased my service, however through a company that offers 99.9% uptime.
It’s interesting that when I filed my report at 6:25 this morning, I received an email stating there were no known current problems. Now, 4.5 hours later…I get another email saying they believe the “outage” is not system wide….interesting.
October 4th, 2006 at 8:57 am
Is this why my mail is down?
October 4th, 2006 at 8:59 am
Well DH seems to have its share of issues. BUT, they do get things working pretty quickly. My site is up, but the email doesn’t work.
October 4th, 2006 at 9:05 am
millhouse is still down
October 4th, 2006 at 9:08 am
i must say i’m pretty disappointed with the events of the last few months. i was so enamored with dreamhost when i first signed up that i highly recommended the service to several people. one of them includes a corporation with whom i work and they took the bait. they switched over and have had nothing but trouble. and today all of my domains, all of the aforementioned company’s domains, and several of my clients’ domains are down. no email. and i can’t even get into the control panel.
and i don’t know of any notifications. i certainly didn’t receive any email at my yahoo account notifying me of problems.
i won’t give up on dreamhost yet. but i will say yes, please get it together soon.

seamus still down
October 4th, 2006 at 9:12 am
seamus was just flaky before, but now it is down for good.
October 4th, 2006 at 9:14 am
Eh, for once we won “Dreamhost Roulette”. Our site amazingly didn’t go down and email was only broken for a half hour this morning.
October 4th, 2006 at 9:41 am
wiggum is back up for me…
October 4th, 2006 at 9:49 am
seamus still seems to be down
October 4th, 2006 at 10:02 am
seamus rejects my advances still.
Maybe “100%” and “soon” mean different things to the Dreamhost staff than they do to me.
Could we please get an update on seamus? I need to upload a crapload of stuff.
October 4th, 2006 at 10:08 am
This is such a rare type of outage, i am *very* surprised by it. I’ve been a cisco network tech and programming consultant for almost ten years now (making ~$120/hr) , and i’ll tell you that every network is prone to failure of some sort, especially networks as big as the ones at DH. I have never had major performance issues until this morning, and DH has served both myself and my clients incredibly well. Their support guys are freakin’ awesome, every time i’ve screwed something up they’ve been quick on the stick to fix it. I have tons of faith in this company, and i chose them for their service, not their price.
btw, the www service died on pez this morning too for about half an hour, although everything else was working fine.
again, much love to the awesome staff at DH, keep up the good (net)work =P
–ryan
October 4th, 2006 at 10:13 am
It seems that smithers is still flaky. First day at DH and I get this ???
October 4th, 2006 at 10:14 am
Re. wowsers:
“I purchased my service, however through a company that offers 99.9% uptime.”
If that is true, you need to go the whatever company you purchased your service “through” and protest loudly that they “re-sold” you Dreamhost service with a “99.9% uptime” representation.
If, on the other hand, you actually signed-up for Dreamhost yourself, and read the Terms of Service (TOS) you agreed to by signing up, you have incorrectly characterized your agreement with Dreamhost. Your hosting arrangement with Dreamhost is *not* a Service Level Agreement (SLA), and being, as you stated, “an IT administrator” you ought to know the difference.
“I think I speak for everyone when I say that regardless of price, we would like to have reliability”
True enough! I “would like to have” the power and speed of a Maserati “regardless of price” paid for my used AMC Gremlin - that does not mean it is reasonable for me to expect that I will receive it. Reliability is a relative term, and DH is a great value; if what you needed was a SLA with guaranteed uptime you should have contracted for, and spent the money for, that type of service. But I keep forgetting that you are “an IT administrator”, so you should know and understand all this…never mind.
October 4th, 2006 at 10:15 am
Adam, they don’t do e-mail notifications anymore. They discontinued them in favour of this blog . . . which made no sense to me because you shouldn’t have to sit around all day checking the blog to see if there is a problem. It’s pretty handy for them though because people who don’t have outages aren’t informed of them unless they come here, leaving them happy and (falsely) secure that everything is find at Dreamhost. The e-mail system made sure everyone knew about all outages . . . not too good for business.
Disillusioned Former DreamHost Customer.

ftp is back up on millhouse.
October 4th, 2006 at 10:19 am
www is back up on millhouse.
October 4th, 2006 at 10:20 am
My server isn’t down, but it’s very slow and sometimes unresponsive. Everytime DH has one of these glitches, it costs me time, money, and a big headache. It’s always 1-2 days per month. I’m giving up on DH, and it’s a shame because I love everything about DH except the constant downtime. Obviously their main target customers are geocities type sites that can handle outages and not serious businesses.
By the way, check this out:
http://onlinepharmacy.dreamhost.com/penis/
http://xxx-host.dreamhost.com/
Perhaps that has something to do with dreamhosts IP’s getting blacklisted for spam?
October 4th, 2006 at 10:22 am
Does anyone here know what server “spunkymail” is on? (Or the authentication server?) My company email is now intermittent, and it’s a very bad day for such a problem.
Thanks!
October 4th, 2006 at 11:23 am
Nelson here: Didn’t work some hours ago but no problems here right now.
October 4th, 2006 at 11:36 am
Guess I better not go to my boss and tell her how the problems at DH have been fixed just yet….
October 4th, 2006 at 11:39 am
HA! Sign up to find that the server I was just assigned is currently down. Ain’t that a hoot!
October 4th, 2006 at 12:07 pm
You just gotta love those who surf the net looking for posts to bash… rlparker..wow what a magnificent piece of work you are! Wish I was as skillful in bashing a man for expecting things to work as agreed as you are! Do you think perhaps you could teach me that?
The fact is when I contacted Dreamhost before signing up with them, I received an email stating “we can boast of a 99.9% uptime”. Unfortunately, I trusted the representative and took them at their word.
I’m sure glad I don’t misrepresent our corporate network to those who need it. I’m also glad that I understand where business needs are concerned, one must have redundancy.
I don’t recall in my former posts that I complained about not having an SLA. I also don’t recall that I expected a Maserati in place of a Gremlin.
What I do expect is that if I buy a Hot cup of coffee, it will be hot.
To put it so even the simple minded can understand: I don’t a bit of downtime, but 18 times is a bit unreasonable isn’t it?
By the way, if you’d like to talk to me, look up the number for BXXXXX Aircraft Corporation (sorry, I can’t list the name, but it’s not hard to determine) in Wichita, KS and ask the operator to speak with the “IT Administrator”.
October 4th, 2006 at 12:18 pm
Yeah, I’m happy with DreamHost today, but what the ***HECK*** is this?
Those appear to be dreamhost.com top level domains. Any explanations?
October 4th, 2006 at 12:46 pm
Decided to change the url’s linked to your name in your last post there, eh, wowsers? Or, just as likely,a “different” wowsers… oh well. My response to your first post was not a “bash”. I was pointing out that you have no “agreement” for 99.9% uptime. I further pointed out that you can’t reasonably expect to get such an agreement for Dreamhost prices. There was no “bashing a man for expecting things to work as agreed”; your agreement makes *no* representation as to the uptime you can expect. An email representing that 99.9% uptime has been acheived is a far cry from being any kind of an “agreement” that you will receive same. I know…it’s complicated.
Sorry, but you’ll need to find someone else to administer your “bashing” education, You are welcome to pop on over to the the Dreamhost Discussion Forum (which is a more appropriate place for discussion)an open a discussion regarding your “agreement” with Dreamhost over uptimes if you are truly interested. I’m sure you will find several knowlegable people there who are willing to help you understand the concepts involved
Oh, and too bad about Kansas….
October 4th, 2006 at 12:50 pm
>.>; i dun care. seriously. my space and b/w just have been multiplied, without any additional costs, and DH is a lot better than other hosting companies i’ve been on, who do not tell you what is going on and make you pay for support.
i love DH.
October 4th, 2006 at 12:51 pm
Oops! I could have *sworn* I deleted that “Kansas” remark…awright, having been there many times, I *did* think it, but didn’t mean to type it . I’m sure there are nice folks in Kansas and some who very much like living there! Sorry!
October 4th, 2006 at 12:54 pm
Well selma is down and out again. Now I wasn’t the original person that setup our ISP for our site, but with these issues in the last month, it’s becoming a large nuisance, and yes I agree, no SLA given the attractive pricing which I can understand.
Having said that I think I will have to look at other options where uptime is better unfortunately…..
October 4th, 2006 at 1:00 pm
I have been with DreamHost for over a year and a half now. I have not had any problems with the service (when I was on the caesar server). However, ever since they decided to move me to the baht server, I have had nothing but problems. I think the problems with the service are hit-or-miss - but it does seem the servers in the Alchemy datacenter are a little more flaky (they have to send all their traffic over to the Switch and Data datacenter - where the core router and the three uplinks are, as well as the NFS). Those links seem to go down more.
October 4th, 2006 at 1:02 pm
Still nothing? Guys, I´m going to be in trouble…
October 4th, 2006 at 1:08 pm
If you need to get an update from DH, you need to open a ticket with them, they don’t use the blog for that purpose.
October 4th, 2006 at 1:15 pm
after having read the long blog posts of ‘it’s fixed, no more issues, promise’, this is very disappointing. all the moreso for knowing enough about networking to know that the modicum of redundancy that should be in place, isn’t.
i too, have referred many people to dreamhost and i just don’t know what to say to them when this happens. they’ve left providers with 99.9% uptime to come here and this just makes me and dreamhost look like … well… fools.
October 4th, 2006 at 1:30 pm
My sites on selma are still down, this sucks, I had major update to do.
October 4th, 2006 at 1:31 pm
I thought I’d drop in to check my sites today and found that they’ve been down all day. I was reading through the posts and found only a couple that mention the “Selma” server. I do know that my sites have been down many times over the last month or so and it is very frustrating. Don’t get me wrong, I think the pricing is fair and the bandwidth plus storage are excellent value, but it’s hard to work with a dynamic site that is constantly down!
I’m not sure who the parker guy is but I hope he isn’t a Dreamhost representative given the demeanor with the other guy. If that’s the case, apparently I need to find another company to host my domains and sites because I’d sure hate to get this type of treatment if I complained (I actually thought about complaining over lots of downtime lately too). Hmmm, perhaps I should reconsider lodging such a complaint at all?
Anyway, what is the deal here? In the last 2 weeks alone, all my sites have gone down multiple times, with today being the worst. Is there a remedy? I understand technology isn’t perfect but considering the multiple failures, it would seem that something could be done to bring the sites back online (or at least move them to a different server). Am I asking too much here?
October 4th, 2006 at 1:34 pm
This is starting to get intolerable, Dreamhost. You need to get on the ball or you’re going to lose a lot of customers, no matter how much space or bandwidth you try to bribe us with.
October 4th, 2006 at 1:35 pm
Does anyone have any comments on the:
http://onlinepharmacy.dreamhost.com/penis/
http://xxx-host.dreamhost.com/fetish/enter/
… sites?
Doesn’t this seem a bit odd to you? DreamHost, what is this? Is it you? If not, are you doing something about it? Can you explain why your top level domain name is advertising porn/erectile drugs?
Do you think that maybe this might make it more difficult for DreamHost email to get past spam filters?
Are you the victims here or what’s up? Jeff, anyone else… can you please explain?
October 4th, 2006 at 1:41 pm
I’ve been with deamhost for a year, first real outage that I’ve experienced. The service has been wonderful in that year so I wouldn’t sweat it if you’re a new customer.
I can’t log in to my control panel, but I guess you’ll have that up and running soon.
October 4th, 2006 at 1:51 pm
Pastor T
I am not a Dreamhost employee, only a customer.. A Dreamhost employee would *never* speak so directly to a poster here
Since you are having troubles with your site, I believe you *should* contact support with your issue(s) and or complaints, so they can work on addressing them. The best way, and the only really accountable way, to do that is via the Support pages from the Dreamhost Control panel. Most of what goes on here is pointless whining - I suppose it makes some feel better, but doe not have much real impact on their problem. A support ticket is the way to go, and I can guarantee you you would be spoken to “harshly”.
October 4th, 2006 at 1:55 pm
Christoph:
Someone in #dreamhost just said that the free subdomains used to be on dreamhost.com instead of dreamhosters.com, and they didn’t move people over. And having advertisemey sites like that isn’t against the TOS, so they’re going to stay there.
October 4th, 2006 at 1:56 pm
My sites on zebes appear to be down as well.
October 4th, 2006 at 1:57 pm
Damn. I changed that from “advertisement” to “advertisey” but failed to remove the “me”. Oops.
October 4th, 2006 at 2:01 pm
Matt, thanks for your reply.
One question… where the heck is “#dreamhost”?
What is that?
October 4th, 2006 at 2:06 pm
Just echoing what Matt said - we used to offer free subdomains based off of ‘dreamhost.com’, and have since switched over to ‘dreamhosters.com’ (in part for the branding issues mentioned). However, we weren’t about to take existing subdomains away from customers, so some still remain.
I don’t know of any blacklists that would take into account obvious SEO-type subdomains, and if there were any that did so this would be a rather flawed way to decide who to block.
- Jeff
October 4th, 2006 at 2:11 pm
Been over an hour since I filed a ticket. I can’t deal with having my site down for an hour or more. Advertisers will drop people, Dreamhost.
October 4th, 2006 at 2:11 pm
Good answer, Jeff.
While it would have been better not to use dreamhost.com from scratch as I’m sure you realize, I’m comforted by the fact that you respect your TOS and don’t remove websites without just cause.
As dumb as those websites are! IMHO
Anyway, no more so than the people who buy its products. And you’re right… that shouldn’t trigger a spam filter. I thought, however, that it may actually have been DreamHost running these sites sending out spam type emails using its servers… glad to see it is not.

Not again. I’m sick of this. I’m amazed this is the first trouble some of you have had. Time after time dh has failed us time & time agsin. The lack of forward thinking is unbelievable sometimes. The ‘ what went wrong illustrated by amusing pictures’ has quickly lost its quirky appeal. I just want a service that f**king works. Trust me we are looking elsewhere.

I don’t need all this bandwidth and space. I would GLADLY sacrifice it for a working host.

Still no update
Still no timestamp
Selma is down again

We are in Melbourne - Australia, we have been down since 11.00 a.m. yesterday, have come in early - it is 7.30 a.m. here and the site is still down - I have posted 4 tickets and not had one reply - it would be great if someone could just update what is going on here - it is 8 hours since their last update. Very frustrating - if nothing is done in the next hour - I will have to cancel staff as we rely heavily on the site - and no site - no emails - no emails - no work!
Please staff at Dreamhost - post an update so approximately when you may have our sites up and running again - thanks.

whats going on here?
up, down.. whens it going to be back up? all my faithful veiwers and listeners are going crazy here!
October 4th, 2006 at 2:58 pm
things used to be really great at dreamhost.
its too early for me to tell if this has really got as bad as it seems.
BUT, i want a server that’s up much more than i want 400 Gigs of storage or 8000 Terrabytes of bandwidth.
October 4th, 2006 at 5:46 pm
I just bought my account a few minutes ago, and they put me on mcclure…
You’d think that they would regulate which servers to put customers on if they know that there’s a network outage, guess not though.
October 4th, 2006 at 6:17 pm
Just signed up, and I get dropped on a dead server…… no control panel, no FTP, makes it hard to migrate my site on! Can we have an update on when this will be fixed???
October 5th, 2006 at 3:58 am
Funny my main domain is down but the subdomain works?
October 5th, 2006 at 8:13 am
They offer good customer service. But I don’t care about the CS. I care about my server not going down or my email working. Now, once again I’m getting password rejects. I hate the day I decided to switch from bluehost.com to DH. Once my year is up I’m going back to bluehost.com
The hell with DH and they sucky network/servers

My 90 day guarantee is up on 10/28. Signed up for 2 yr. Seems everyday I have an email authentication problem. I have not experienced too much downtime on my hosted sites, but I do read the posts and am aghast at the daily problems. I like the fact that every little detail is reported, but it doesn’t give me a sense of reliability.

In their defense, RD, they host something like 300,000 domains and most hosting companies would censor a blog like this.
Most customers, I suspsect, are not having problems at a given time… and can you imagine the compaints that any company with 300,000 doimains in a high tech industry would have on their blog at any one time if uncensored?
Think 300,000 uncensored McDonald’s customers given access to a company blog… there would be complaints, albeit most of them got their food on time and enjoyed it.

I just started using you guys, I like the transparency of issues.
Just a note: Is this issue coinciding with your network slowness issue? They could be related as in you are saying you are losing mac addresses (maybe they are on another switch, I don’t know your topology?) but the switch doesn’t drop packets when we lose a mac address - it floods that traffic.
October 1st, 2007 at 10:20 am
It’s probably advisable to put guys that have multiple sites on multiple servers – so that not all their sites go down when a server goes down. Anyway, I still think DH are doing a good job, and kudo’s to them for actually keeping this blog / comments section open. Most companies by now would have stopped comments being allowed, or at least moderate the comments.
