File server shuffling
Posted (October 10th, 2006 at 2:52 pm PST) by KellyTomorrow night, 10/11/2006, at 10PM Pacific we will be moving 4 or 8 file servers into new positions in their racks. This is the same as previous moves, and is to increase their density/optimize their placement in the racks. This will affect most clusters. Downtime is estimated to be about an hour, however you will likely only experience it if you have files actually on these servers.
No email will be lost during the outage.

Announcing the new blue switch: Ciagra. Gets your server up within an hour.
October 11th, 2006 at 12:00 pm
All of the above posts are absurd becuase they are all complaining about a announced maintinance window that doesn’t even happen for another 10 hours. Get a grip people.
October 11th, 2006 at 12:33 pm
I geuss this could explain why my webFTP won’t work suddenly.
October 11th, 2006 at 2:16 pm
No, they are not absurd. They are complaining thay their sites keep going down even when there is not an announced maininence window. When you’re paying for a service from a company, any downtime issues are not absurd.

It is absurd because they are posting somewhere that has absolutely nothing to do with what they are reporting. It does absolutely no good to post about your bathroom sink water leak in the city water system maintenance blog. They would be much better severed by 1. Sending in a support request and 2. Starting a new DreamHost forum thread. If you participate in the forums you would know that many of the people who think there is some major problem actually just need a little assistance with how to set up their personal stuff. And if there is a bigger issue at hand the support team and the forum users are very good at helping figure out exactly what is going on. Posting here on an unrelated issue ignores common sense and basic internet etiquette.

All good for me!
Thanks Dreamhost.

Michael, it’s the frustration. And yes, posting about my sink backing up in the city water system maintenance blog is great if it’s the city’s fault that it’s clogged. And do’t compare DH to a sewer line –at least not yet.
P.S. I’d been using DH to host my sites and front-ending them through blogger.com. I moved my sites to DH totally because of all the downtime at blogger. Within a week this became the son of blogger.
Must be my fault.

hardedge: “Ciagra. Gets your server up within an hour.”
See your doctor if you experience server uptime lasting more than four hours.

How do you contact someone with Dream Host about my website being down for 2 days!! No e-mails or phone calls have been returned.
October 13th, 2006 at 12:41 pm
returned phone calls? are you sure you host with dreamhost? did you just email them, or did you put in a support request?
October 14th, 2006 at 5:16 pm
Say what you want about Dreamhost, but they response VERY fast to e-mail support requests. I haven’t tried the phone support though.
October 15th, 2006 at 6:08 pm
Actually in my experience they dont respond “VERY” fast to support emails but on the other hand I’ve never seen them down for too long at a time so they are reasonably reliable.
