Mail database maintenence (completed)

Posted (October 10th, 2006 at 3:27 pm PST) by mikeh

Several of our databases which are used by our mail system will be going offline for maintenence early tomorrow morning, Wed Oct 11 02:00:00 PDT 2006. Expected downtime is 30 to 60 minutes. This will take DreamHost webmail for all domains offline during that time. Webmail should be the only service interrupted by this, and mail will continue to be delivered while it is offline. IMAP and POP3 access will remain online the entire time.

Update: Wed Oct 11 02:48:30 PDT 2006: All maintenence completed. Webmail is back online.

Hi,

Your mailserver still seems to be down though … I can’t pop mail out - it times out.

Thanks, Sam

That’s funny, my POP/IMAP mail hasn’t worked all week. My dreams are all nightmares with you guys-

Big surprise, my POP is acting up as well. Keeps saying my password is wrong.

We’ve had continuous email problems for 6 months (some days it works, others, not so much). We ended up moving our email to another hosting provider which, remarkably, doesn’t have these problems. I doubt the “normal” everyday email problems are actually connected to this particular DH maintenance.

mail with dreamhost is a complete joke.

I’ve been getting password errors on my POP3 on and off throughout the weekend, and they’re back now. I had to close Outlook to keep working without constantly constant alerts.

Apparently, it’s broken completely now.

Agreed. It’s not working.

still having difficulties sending and receiving mail

It would be nice if the bad password problem was what they fixed. I’m having that problem again also and I’ve had it happen quite often. Mail unreliablility was one of the reasons I left my previous host of years. While I’m pleased with the rest of the service, mail sure has been a bad dream.

Such negativity about the mail system! My mailboxes have been working just fine for as long as I can remember. Well. Until five minutes ago. Password errors too. Just looked here to see if anything’s ‘officially’ wrong. :P

For the record, my IMAP mail here worked fine all through this morning, but broke just now (shortly after 3pm EST). Huh.

You should rename your service to nightmarehost.com . I have never seen a more unreliable, troublesome hosting service than this one. When are you going to grow up?

oh, back up and running without any issues. At least until tomorrow that it.

Their “maintenence” seemed to kill my pop3 as well.

I have always had a good mail service from Dreamhost. I do get the occasional time when I can’t connect, so I wouldn’t trust it to give a business client. But then I’m sure someone in business would pay more than 10 a month or whatever it is.

I very seldom have problems and I love dreamhost, but today..not so much.

My email is whacked..and with 4 domains, yeah, that pretty much sux.

Dreamhost is less stable than Windows! This is killing me. For those of you who have tried other hosting services - any recommends?

I have hosted with a number of domains. While there have been issues here, at least they are very responsive. Other places are not nearly as courteous, or have as many options. The best I have ever done for stability is host my own site. But you do not get nearly as good of options.

Mick, wherever you go dont go with ipowerweb or ipower (same company). They have a terrible control panel so that changing credit card, renewing your account, upgrading-downgrading, everything must be done by asking to customer service, which can take up to 3 days.

Switched from them to dreamhost and it’s been great for me so far (4 months maybe). Admittedly I never use email though (gmail fan here).

I dunno if i can do this but…

http://www.google.com/hosted

it’s a new thing of googles, where you sign up and use their services by bringing your own domain. Depending on your use, (for me) they gave me a 25 account limit, which i use solely for email.

They give you all the custom MX records that you need to enter into your DNS management page, in order for the email to get sent directly to google instead of the STANDARD inbox.

Its the best service ive ever used.

Again, check http://www.google.com/hosted for details

The maintenence i anything but complete. It seems to me that no test were done to ensure that email service was back to normal after the maintenence. Dreamhost is not turning out to be a dream with emails.

My email still is down when I try to login it says error username or password do not match. I am starting to agree with the others that the dreamhost server is becoming a nightmare. Each time maintenence is done I lose all my emails I have stored on the email server.

Come on you whiners! It can’t ALL be DH. I would suspect that there’s something more with your mail troubles as I run IMAP with about 5 clients and 10 email addresses and I didn’t have any issues at all during the maintenance.

Hint: Contact support.

We (some other customers) are rapidly getting to the “don’t give a sh*t” stage about your problems. When all you do is bitch and moan in public you start to lose credibilty. You might think that you’re trying to “shame” DH into taking care of the problem by posting information here. And you would be if they weren’t busy going through the support queue and trying to fix the other issues they know about.

You’ve used up your whine quota.

David A. - Although it’s a bit of a competitor (at the low end) for DH, it is a bit different. I appreciate that you shared that with us. There have been accusations that DH censors messages, if that were true (and maybe ones with swearing are removed - rightly) then I’d expect that Dave’s message would go away. It’s still here.

So, I’m sorry Rajiv that you’re having troubles. I’m sure that if you’ve reported it DH will get it looked at it soon. Is webmail working for you?

Mick says - “Dreamhost is less stable than Windows! This is killing me. For those of you who have tried other hosting services - any recommends? ”

Maybe you should stay away from computers altogether

I have to chip in with the frustrated crowd. Dreamhost: great features at a great price and with a good attitude, but how can you allow such consistent problems with something so vital as email? Today it’s the password problem as reported by others on this page…

A friend I recommended to you a few months ago is jumping ship because he’s had it with the email problems. I’m holding on, but you just gotta get this email stuff taken care of.

I had the same disconnecting problem with IMAP too, and found it worked fine if I used the m##### username instead of the actual email name.

Big surprise here. DH sucks all around. Not only is my email completely down for all my mailboxes, but my website along with uploads ftp is down as well. Of course there’s no way to contact a representative from DH, atleast I haven’t had any luck. Whats worse is that I didn’t set anything up here, someone else did and left me to keep it operational…..which I’m clueless.

Fsmoto…. you may want to contact your Domains Registrar ,it looks like your domain name expired and isn’t even pointing at Dreamhost’s name servers….whoopsie

Ha! That’s a classic. fsmoto trying to blame the fact that he’s completely braindead on Dreamhost.

I always figured that if your idea of accomplishing something is coming here to cry, that you’re probably too stupid to do anything right.

Interesting, I haven’t been able to get pop or imap working on my mail client at all since I signed up a couple months ago. There’s something major wrong with your mail setup. Take a look at your forum sometime… there are few peeved inidivuals regarding this subject.

My domain name HASN’T expired and I have an account setup in my panel, yet my mail client tells me that the server is NOT accepting my password.

“After getting hacked this past weekend, Google Inc.’s Blogger publishing service suffered an outage on Thursday morning that kept both Blogger.com and the Blogspot hosting service offline for two hours. A “network malfunction” caused the outage, Google said in a short note posted on Blogger Status, a site where the company informs users about Blogger system issues.”

Sounds like the grass is always greener… Not.

mGee - are you able to use the webmail.domain.com interface?

Is the Dreamhost server room really a warzone?

See ya.

Everything seems to be up now, had 2 days where it was sometimes flaky. Sometimes worked. No worries though, I’m glad it’s working now.

Viewguard, your mother should be shot for giving birth to such a worthless spamming piece of trash. How stupid do you have to be to spam a site here… that’s hosted here?

Dude Girl: People that do actual research don’t end up at Lunarpages. Maybe put a little more thought into it the next time you decide to spam a competitor on your own host’s site.

Tip for everyone here: If you want to leave, leave. But do your own research. Every single site that gets mentioned here is spam from dirtbags–no exceptions, which is nothing to base an important decision on. Nothing good can come from listening to retards like Dude Girl.

When will the webmail.domain.com server be back up I cannot get to my mail. If any one knows when the server will be fixed or if there is a way to get it fixed please help!!!!

hi, i almost signed up for ’strictly business’ account… but i read these comments about DH’s email problems:( do you know any other host offering so big data transfer???

@ mbutcher - Webmail’s been available all day today (13 October). At least it has been for me. Did you try entering a support ticket?

we’ve had mail troubles from the get-go with DH. been here 4 months and it’s now wearing very thin.
can anybody tell me if safari (mac) is the problem or contributes to it? would anything be more stable and allow for - no more password problems? i’m not the guru here, nor do we have one on staff. I just need the mail to work along with our site.
It appears, although we pay less, we certainly get less as well. I suspect, unless DH is on the cusp of a windfall of cash,
they just might suffer a slow death as we all bow out - one by one.
I do root for the little guys, but at the expense of losing business, etc.. it really doesn’t matter. they need to fix the problems
ASAP. I assume they understand that.?

I will suggest to change to another providor…

I have had for the last several days problems with pop mail again. I can’t tell you how many times I have had outlook fail to connect. I’ve been an IT guy for 20 years, so I do know how to set these things up. It has been realy flakey lately and it has nothing to do with me not knowing how to do this stuff. For a while it was working fine. But it is an off an on issue. Sometimes it will work for days without any problems. Unfortunatly, I’m getting tired of making excuses to my users and haveing to tell them just wait a while and try again. We have been with dreamhost for a year now and jus when I thought things were fixed, it has started up again. Recently they tried to automaticly bill us for another year, my boss took care of that from what I understand. Doesn’t look like we will be using them for much longer. After a year of these problems, she has had enough. Dreamhost offers some nice deals, and if you don’t need reliable, maybe it’s a good deal. I really wish they could just fix the problems so we could stay on board and I don’t have to go and reconfigure everyones computers.

@ Sierra IT

Maybe it’s Outlook, and not necessarily Dreamhost. I’ve been on DH for over 18 months, and have NEVER had a password issue with a POP client (I mostly use Eudora).

I read everything here and I disagree with these peoples talking bad about dreamhost, i been with them since 2000 and THE SERVICE is GREAT and it is more that what you paid for, in 6 years, I probably had 3-4 problems, They always announce downtime so we get ready for it and if it take them a bit longer then be it, but at least they tell you, some host do not even bother like Ipowerweb, I switch almost everything from them to Dreamhost over the years and i do not regret my choice at all… Big thumb up and long live dreamhost.

Laughable - most whiners in here are the ones who call their free ISPs technical support when they’re website is down and they think its the ISPs fault - bitching and whining all the way up the chain until someone tell them to STFU. Why even bother? Are you seriously trying to get this blog taken away? They at least give you the respect to voice your opinion, which they could take away in a heartbeat - why not stop the whining and just grow up already?

If your running a business thats “killing you” on Dreamhosts shared servers, then your an idiot to begin with - your “business” isn’t worth s**t - and you should all stop whining about problems and get a real dedicated server solution if it’s that important with redundant backups. Otherwise, your all just a bunch of pissy whiners who clearly have nothing better to do other than pull down your blog and bitch and whine on all of them all night in your mommy and daddys basement.

Anyways, keep up the great work DH - How can i possibly complain when i’ve got 4.4TB of bandwidth a month with close to flawless uptime? Just awesome. Thanks all your work is appreciated. ALOT.

Emm, just wondering if the webmail server is coming back soon? :S

I can access my email but cannot go in via the web, which I’ve grown used to. From my end the webmail server has been down for a few days now.

Anyone? Anyone?

I never have problems with my service ever…

can anyone tell me WTF is going on with email server @ dreamhost? can you people check your email via www and/or via Outlook/Eudora/Bat ?
