Simplified Announcement Categories
We’ve changed our categories for announcements here a little bit to hopefully clarify some of the information being announced. The new categories are mostly severity based and reflect how large of an impact on our services a particular announcement has. This is still a work in progress so feel free to comment on how effective or not you think this change will be.

Most severe category: “Oh God! We’re all gonna die!”

Personally, not a fan. There aren’t actually that many announcements that you really need categories for people to be informed about things - the main page of the site loads, you know within 5 seconds of scanning it whether anything affects you. Categorising stuff only comes in handy when you are checking back through things - in which case you don’t want to know by severity, you want to know by component affected.
Also - severity is not a very good measure of things - who decides what is severe and what isnt? For example, mysql goes offline - this is very severe for the person whose site relies on it, whereas another person who doesn’t use it couldn’t care less.
Stick to well defined things - this is broken, that is broken, as opposed to a very subjective classification.
