Panel down (and back up)
Posted (October 16th, 2006 at 8:24 pm PST) by jeremyOur private network has had some unexpected issues that we’re currently working on. Until they are resolved, the panel and related updates will be down. We’ll post more information as we receive it.
As of 8:45pm PDT, the panel is back up. It looks like our firewall had some issues requiring a reboot. We received our replacements today and we’ll be configuring them this week, so this should be behind us very shortly.

By -any- chance does this mean webmail isn’t working as well? *blinks* I can’t login! Sorry if this is kinda unrelated.
October 16th, 2006 at 8:29 pm
Is this problem connected to webmail, since none of my domains webmail is working right now ?
Hope it will be fixed soon.
assa.
October 16th, 2006 at 8:30 pm
yes, the webmail is down as well. So when will that be fixed by tommorrow hopefully?…
October 16th, 2006 at 8:31 pm
Thanks! *crings as she waits for tomorrow*
October 16th, 2006 at 8:31 pm
And it looks like my sites are down as well altogether. Not pleased with the amount of problems happening lately with the servers!
October 16th, 2006 at 8:34 pm
This realy sucks!! Thought I would share my thoughts too you guys. No panel.bummer
October 16th, 2006 at 8:34 pm
Hmmm lets see…100,000 customers @ 7.95 per month equals $795,000 revenue per month. You might think they could afford better hardware.
This is happening FAR too much. And you complain “Sales are slow”…
October 16th, 2006 at 8:34 pm
Yep!
October 16th, 2006 at 8:35 pm
Is this the reason why I can’t connect to the webftp as well?
October 16th, 2006 at 8:35 pm
That is, yep I’m on achilles!
October 16th, 2006 at 8:38 pm
Unbelievable. I have an entire year left on my account, paid, and I’m just about set on moving to Media Temple’s new (gs) plan. A month’s worth of daily server outages, now the panel? DH provides an amazing set of features given the price, but I guess you really do get what you pay for.
October 16th, 2006 at 8:38 pm
I’m on Achilles too, which has had chronic problems today. Went to the web panel to complain again… web panel dead!
I really like you guys as a hosting company — but you need better server monitoring, and you REALLY REALLY need a better solution for dead slow servers than “reboot and hope the problem goes away”.
October 16th, 2006 at 8:41 pm
I’m not 100% sure it’s related but toy.cloudconnector.com (AKA DH VPN) is also down.
October 16th, 2006 at 8:42 pm
i am getting really sick of this, do you have any idea how much these outages interfere with not only my business in a financial way but it also makes the operation look unprofessional when its down all the damn time.
on top of that I use my e-mail for personal stuff also, its really freakin nice when friends and family in addition to customers thing i am ingnoring a message, or i cant get an important message that i am waiting for. i am about to jump ship and i suggest others do the same. we pay you for a service, we rarely get it. start crediting my account for every hour its down and and i will be alot more friendly

I’m very much in agreement with this.
October 16th, 2006 at 8:47 pm
M - I must be retarded too because I can’t see the problem with 100,000*7.95=795,000
October 16th, 2006 at 8:58 pm
I agree that things are out of hand. I have had e-mail delivery and Web site problems for close to a year. This has had an adverse impact on my business. I have made my customers offers and concessions as a result. Not once has dreamhost made any offer to me to make up for the bad service or shown me any any indication that they are interested in keeping me as a customer.
October 16th, 2006 at 8:59 pm
Hi, I m on Kitkat and I have added 2/3 domains of my friends .. they complain of it being slower than th previous hosting !!! Sometimes, I m not able to access panel.. for hours!
anyway I like DH

Re: Media Temple - entirely Flash-based navigation on their index? I wouldn’t even give that site so much as a second thought.
October 16th, 2006 at 9:14 pm
actually, all i want is near 99.9999% uptime with my email… i dont host any website, and dont have any business on my own (my side-job takes care of my finances); but i do rely much on my email. when i say email, i would mean “being able to send it when i need to send it, and being able to receive it when i want to receive it.”
the nice thing about going a hosting is that you have control of your email, ie., personalized emails, disposable, customized, etc. but lately (about a month or so now), ive began to go back to the free email services of yahoo and gmail… dreamhost just goes up and down.
October 16th, 2006 at 9:19 pm
Alfred: well, I have moved the EMAIL part out of few of my domains to Google’s GAYD (www.google.com/a) specially for email, and I find it more convenient!
October 16th, 2006 at 9:21 pm
I think corporations like Yahoo! and Google would have much deeper pockets than Dreamhost, and thus be able to provide uptime like that. Now if you want e-mail that actually has some worthwhile features, there are better places to look than those two.
October 16th, 2006 at 9:45 pm
DH has been having more ups and downs lately than an octagenarian on Viagra…
October 16th, 2006 at 10:14 pm
I am the resident techie of a website hosted by dreamhost, I manage other hosting accounts else where and I have to say that dreamhost is the worst of them all. Their tech support take days not hours, trying to update the simplist of things takes hors not minutes. Trying to create sub-domains is a nightmare and the uptime is less than the downtime. In short, this is simply the worst hosting I have ever come across. When I am asked to work on the websites hosted bt dreamhost I cringe because I know that it is going to be a nightmare to work with. Oh yeah, why on gofs green earth do you use that control panel?
October 16th, 2006 at 10:32 pm
My site is down, but I can access it through SSH terminal. How come? Any ideas?
October 16th, 2006 at 10:38 pm
Nicholas: It has nothing to do with who has the bigger wallet… Yahoo and Google are free services, while I am a paying client (yearly-contract)… I dont expect DH to be as good as Yahoo/Google in terms of functionality (which I dont need much), but just let me have a good enough uptime.
October 17th, 2006 at 3:27 am
I’m being billed for an year of hosting AGAIN, after I made a payment a couple of months back. It seems the control panel is a bit messed cos all status sections have incorrect info.
Anyone else having this problem? Will contact support now.
October 17th, 2006 at 4:36 am
just saw this, I want add host my other domains here, but get an error “can not add, u have no permission to add”…..
is this related with above issue?
anyothers have same issue?
October 17th, 2006 at 4:39 am
problems with the panel again? seems to be down.
October 17th, 2006 at 5:39 am
Ok, I run several websites and am also on achilles. This is completely unacceptable. I understand periodic outages here and there, but I spent a load of money yesterday on advertising, not knowing that when a person clicked my Google ad they went to a dead page. I’m not trying to sound like a winer or complainer. On the contrary, I’ve always sung the praises of DreamHost. Yesterday I was telling a friend how great you guys are and when he went to see my website guess what? IT WAS DOWN! Please let us all know if you are going to upgrade, if not I’m going to be forced to pursue a partial refund and move my stuff do another host.
Cheers!

None of my sites have been accessible all morning. It’s the first time that I *noticed* a failure since joinging a couple weeks ago, but I *really* need uptime today. I’m working on a project for the Sheriff’s Office with a deadline coming up very quickly. And I planned on doing a lot of work on it today.
October 17th, 2006 at 7:08 am
“smithers” server is now down.
Anyone is hosted there apart of me?
October 17th, 2006 at 7:27 am
I’ve been with dreamhost for at least 3 years now. I’ve always been very patient, and liked dreamhost, but I have to say just recently the outages are costing me.
It’s getting very frustrating and I’m getting complaints that my site is slow and down all the time. Not good when I’ve had opposition just recently competing against me
October 17th, 2006 at 7:27 am
Two days down. I receive these automated messages saying ‘no problems found’ … then why is my site down!? If only I received some kind of human message explaining why or what the problem is. If I did not see these comments that archilles is down .. how would I have known, I’m not psychic.
October 17th, 2006 at 7:46 am
I’m on Smithers. And connections don’t time out anymore. They’re just refused.
October 17th, 2006 at 7:47 am
M says: “Also, Gmail isn’t being run on a server full of shared hosting accounts with poorly written script that are hogging up resources and opening security holes all over the place.”
Neither is Dreamhost’s e-mail. What’s your point?
DH charges for email (It is part of your hosting package for which you are paying). It breaks on a regular basis. Why is it that I am supposed to be happy about this as a paying customer? I don’t pay them to apologize to me every other day (not that they actually ever apologize, but I digress).
And if others can do it better for free, it really doesn’t matter how (business model) they achieve that as long as it is a sustainable business model. The fact of the matter is that you can currently get superior reliability compared to DH from someone not charging you any money. All the features in the world don’t amount to anything if you can’t send and receive email in the first place.
October 17th, 2006 at 7:58 am
Yes! Smithers is back up. Thanks DH.
October 17th, 2006 at 8:20 am
Same for me,was just adding some stuff on my website and got to listed as official fansite, getting many new visits, dont want them to be scared of from a slow loading web page
But u do your work and i do mine… Take care!
October 17th, 2006 at 8:27 am
M - do you know what revenue means?
hint: it’s the money coming in before you subtract costs (like almost all the things you listed)…
Revenues aren’t profits obviously, I guess thinking they are makes you the retarded one?
October 17th, 2006 at 8:52 am
My sites are down again.
How about you guys?
October 17th, 2006 at 8:55 am
Can you say “Money back guarantee”?
October 17th, 2006 at 9:01 am
my site is on millhouse.
i can access php or html, but not sql…
anybody having same problem??
October 17th, 2006 at 9:06 am
This is a joke my sites (hillhurst) have been up and down for the last 3 days is dreamhost ever going to fix this ?
October 17th, 2006 at 9:18 am
Yah, my sites are down again too! >:(
I’m on smithers. Could someone from DH simply let us know what is *causing* this and let us know that you’re working on it? Silence on your part is disturbing.
October 17th, 2006 at 9:25 am
It really sucks! My site is on millhouse and is down either!
anybody tells me why a “panel down” issue can cause all sites down?
My site is http://www.ichiban.cn it still can’t be accessed through web browser!
October 17th, 2006 at 9:26 am
Nicholas: What is wrong with ‘entirely Flash based navigation on their index’?
October 17th, 2006 at 9:49 am
Who cares if it’s flash or not… at least their site is up.
October 17th, 2006 at 12:16 pm
I’m very disappointed in 2 things:
1) The amount of downtime. I just signed up a few days ago and already have had tons of problems. Also - tech support takes quite a while to respond even the the simplest things.
2) The fact that DH allows conversations such as M’s to remain on one of their official websites. Very unprofessional, arguing over who is more retarded. ::) Where is the moderation?
October 17th, 2006 at 12:50 pm
M says: “Then stick with Gmail. Who said you couldn’t? Google is worth over $100,000,000,000–Dreamhost isn’t. Who do you think has more resources to work with?”
Who cares how much money each has?
I don’t use Gmail. I use DH. I’m paying DH. If DH can’t provide services that we’re paying for, perhaps they should rethink their business plan so that their paying customers receive the services that they are paying for.
October 17th, 2006 at 2:58 pm
“The amount of money is relevant because the clueless masses couldn’t seem to figure out how Google, with their multiple data centers and billions of dollars, could possibly provide a more stable mail service than a single shared hosting company. It’s a real mystery… can’t possible have anything to do with available resources.”
Again, you avoid the issue completely. What resources they have is of no concern to the paying customer.
I pay DH for email service. They don’t advertise “somewhat unreliable email that may not work at all some of the time”. If they don’t have the “resources” to provide reliable email, then they shouldn’t be trying to provide it.
Again, this isn’t a “Oh, email was down for an hour or two a couple months ago” thing … this is a “Gee, email is broken … again. Just like 2 days ago and last week” thing.
