Hey Justin, thanks for the heads up.

I take it this is why database access is failing for some of us?
it’d be good if someone could explain what services an outage like this effects when it happens. Most of us aren’t intimately familiar with Dreamhost network typology.
But yes, the update is very appreciated.

It appears resolved. Only 25 min. total downtime - and that was the first spot of downtime I can recall having in over a month. Great work!

Wasabi is down…
October 17th, 2006 at 2:24 pm
doesnot appear resolved here - right before this message nelson had been up and down with me…

It seems as if hillhurst is down as well :-\
October 17th, 2006 at 2:35 pm
Hillhurst has had intermittent problems all day. I’m waiting for it to appear up here.

I don’t think it’s a network card problem to start off with. I was still able to access the SSH when the web wasn’t accessible anymore - however I wasn’t able to list any directories’ content. Every folder was giving a ‘no found’ error but an ls was showing all the folders.
I’ve been with DH for well over 3 years now, but never did I experience downtime like in the past months. It crossed the line. I mean how many problems should we customers accept in a given year? Sorry, my bad, in a given day - here at DH.
Start by updating us better and ‘back up shortly’ for a network card, never takes an hour, and the clock is still ticking,

Yes, Hillhurst has had intermittent problems all day :S
October 17th, 2006 at 2:39 pm
Nelson is still down for me as well
It’s been down solid for 40 minutes or so, and was intermittent for a couple hours before that. D’oh
October 17th, 2006 at 2:43 pm
Will it be anytime soon? Its be down for 1 hour 15 minutes for me now.

I can’t get email (via IMAP), can’t telnet in, can’t FTP, can’t see my websites. I’ve asked other folks to try my site (from where they’re at in other parts of the world) and they can’t reach it either.
I can, of course, reach this page and not find anything useful on this major outage. And can get everywhere else I’ve tried on the net. Except get to my own stuff. Maddening. Seems to have been like this for about an hour now.

Is this affecting Lira as well?
October 17th, 2006 at 3:07 pm
if others servers are invlved this looks like a major SNAFU. In my part of the world it’s just pas midnight : I’me heading to bed… G’d night folks !
October 17th, 2006 at 3:10 pm
Seems to be affecting tak, too.
October 17th, 2006 at 3:12 pm
my blog is not loading. how can we tell if the server is part of the outage?
October 17th, 2006 at 3:12 pm
I can’t access the databse either (database on elmyra).
I don’t understand how I can set up a business critical website on dreamhost with all this down time AND such a long wait for support… I’ve been in the queue for over 2 hours.
This is not the first time either. I’ve had 2 days of downtime recently waiting on the queue because their db restore script failed. (don’t tell me it’s my fault… I tested this 5 times with the same bad results of your script, luckly the last 2 times I created a manual backup myself in the shell so i didn’t have to rely on the customer support).
This is getting to the point where I’m considering other hosts. This customer service is completely unacceptable.
October 17th, 2006 at 3:13 pm
I can’t send or receive email. Is this a related problem?
October 17th, 2006 at 3:16 pm
My sites on hillhurst have been up and down for 48 hrs now, will anybody from dreamhost let us know how big a problem they have, and how many more hours, days or months will this be going on.
Thanks dream(nightmare) host.

Here I cancelled my dinner plans because it was so important that I get this site done today… now, of course, I can’t access it. Shoulda gone out to eat.
an update would be super. Did you have to build a new network card from scratch?
October 17th, 2006 at 3:21 pm
This is the end of the road for me. Dreamhost is completely worthless now. I’m moving to a new host ASAP and part of my website will be about telling my visitors not to use Dreamhost.

If you are so sure something is all wrong check to make sure Nelson is working now but no FTP access.
To check do this:
Go to: Start>All Programs>Accessories>Command Promt
Type in excatly replacing [type in your website domain] with your website
tracert [type in your website domain]
then do:
ping [type in your website domain]
If nothing comes up then its down if something does its up but something still could be wrong. So maybe there wont be anymore complaning
October 17th, 2006 at 3:31 pm
idontremember - You should work for dreamhost
October 17th, 2006 at 4:10 pm
Is there a comment about Trafalga needed here?

I’ve had more than 25 down times during the past 48 hours with my websites hosted on ACHILLES.DREAMHOST.COM — would you take a look at that server, and consider replacing it as you’ve done with Nelson and Brazil, pretty please?
Here’s a log of all my down times: http://www.djchuang.com/2006/10/d1378 (in Eastern Time)
