Quick battery swap in a file server (Done!)

Posted (October 30th, 2006 at 3:05 pm PST) by DreamHost

We need to do a quick battery swap in the file server that failed this morning. This is typically a 5 minute procedure.

All is back to normal with this file server:
Mon Oct 30 22:14:50 GMT [rc:notice]: The system was down for 203 seconds

Sadly not my best time (188seconds), but still pretty good. Those darn screws wouldn’t line up correctly.

Three and a half minutes of downtime!? Unacceptable. Do it again and keep doing it until you can get it under 120 seconds! Now drop and twist! Lefty loosey! Righty tighty! Lefty loosey! Righty tighty! Lefty loosey! Righty tighty! Keep going….

Oh, they’ll do it again alright – don’t you worry about that, Einstein : )

Hah! I had a total lefty-loosey righty-tighty moment earlier installing something else. There was a screw in the rack already keeping me from installing a new server, stood there trying to take it out with my left hand (I’m a righty) and then realized why it was getting harder to turn. I repeated the mantra out loud while I reversed direction.
