alameda crashed (Back up!)
Posted (November 4th, 2006 at 8:52 am PST) by KellyAlameda crashed a little while ago. Attempts to revive it are not going well, and it seems the power strip is not responding to remote commands. A technician is on their way in right now to reboot the server. ETA is 30 minutes just to be safe, it will hopefully be faster than that.
I’m sorry about the delayed update. Alameda has been back online for about 1 hour now. Please email technical support if you are still having problems!

P.S.: Y’know guys, sometimes this move to the new data center you’re making looks more and more like you’re just re-arranging the deck chairs on the you-know-what…

Hardedge, your first reply is one of the best I’ve ever read on this blog. Your second reply, no so much.

November 4th, 2006 at 11:40 am
Yah, my site is at a crawl right now, super mega slow…boooo!

I’m constantly amazed by how few people know which servers might affect their sites . . . all of that information is fairly easy to determine through the web panel.
November 4th, 2006 at 1:14 pm
I tried to unsubscribe from the newsletter but of course the panel is down. I forget, why did I cancel my account again?
November 4th, 2006 at 1:20 pm
Still having hard times over here, (15 KB/s).
brasscrest, can’t find any of relevant information about servers on the web panel. You might have an other version. The only way I know what my server is, is using ‘cmd’ and ‘tracert’. Still other servers which might affect my site as well are unknown for me. It’s nowhere on the webpanel.
November 4th, 2006 at 7:12 pm
A better way of checking which server you’re on than doing a traceroute is to use ‘host http://www.yourdomain.com‘, then ‘host’ on the IP it gives you.
E.g. (this is on Linux, but it should be similar on Windows):
$ host http://www.mattnordhoff.com
http://www.mattnordhoff.com has address 208.97.156.186
$ host 208.97.156.186
186.156.97.208.in-addr.arpa domain name pointer basic-emu.pringle.dreamhost.com.
“basic” means it’s Apache 1.3 (it’ll be “apache2″ for Apache 2), “emu” is the specific Apache instance, and “pringle” is the server.
It also says the name of the server in big letters when you log in with SSH.

Alameda… that’s where they keep the nuclear wessels.

It would be helpful if you put the time in your posts when you add edits.

Does this have to do with why I can not access my cpanel?
November 5th, 2006 at 6:43 am

November 5th, 2006 at 7:33 am

Ut oh.
November 5th, 2006 at 7:56 am
Server burns: Fifth downtime in 3 Days… (Down now too)
About 24 hours without any response from DreamHost Support.
November 5th, 2006 at 8:10 am
Still down. I do not think “Back Up” means what he thinks it means.
November 5th, 2006 at 8:47 am
Thanks for fixing the town where I live. I had no idea it had crashed while I was sleeping. Hopefully you were able recover all of my neighbors, the nice trees that line the streets, and the cool shops that are within walking distance.
And I’m glad my dreamhost server (catalina) is still in good shape!

My site http://chiodos.us is down as well, well it says “index of/”, as if everything was deleted.
November 5th, 2006 at 1:28 pm
Why the name Alameda ?
November 5th, 2006 at 3:26 pm
I think we need a small revolution here. I think that we should DEMAND that CONFIRMED OUTAGES be reported on this site as well as “I can’t get the machine to restart” messages.
It’s totally nuts to have “Alameda’s back online” and have 30 people reporting their sites are down AND NO PUBLIC REPORTS.
I DO appreciate that we’re getting some details, and honestly most of them don’t apply to me but just because SOME things are reported and others are not makes me wonder why we/they bother.
November 5th, 2006 at 3:30 pm
Ehmmm, why connection speed so low??? just 50 kb/sek max… WTF???
November 5th, 2006 at 3:42 pm
Well, yeah.. I have hosting on two different servers (burns and sprite). Burns was down for at least three hours yesterday. Sprite has been down 2 hours 10 minutes and counting today. Burns is as responsive as ever, but transfer speeds feel somewhat slower than usual… I’m wondering if they have some issues with the connections to the file server, as earlier today I could SSH into sprite, but ‘ls’ or anything else that tried to access the hosted material caused the entire session to hang.
Oh well, I’m fine as long as they don’t both go down at the same time (I’m so jinxing myself by saying that), but still, if some downages are to be reported, all should be.
November 5th, 2006 at 3:49 pm
>And I’m glad my dreamhost server (catalina) is still in good shape!
See, it was a bad idea to tell people this. My server runs fine too but I’m not telling you which one it is. Now they know catalina is doing fine they’ll host 300 more domains through it and it’ll start to lag terribly!! Bwahaha, you’re screwed.
November 5th, 2006 at 3:56 pm
My site is down!
November 5th, 2006 at 4:24 pm
looks up to me Fabio. (I don’t mention my server name either.)
Some of the symptoms reported do sound like file server issues (showing a blank index page). Obviously the web server is up but the files aren’t there.
November 5th, 2006 at 5:13 pm
I’m still satisfied with the service
November 5th, 2006 at 9:14 pm
Also, threaded comments would be nice. I can build u a proper status site, as opposed to misuse of popular blogging software, if you want.
November 5th, 2006 at 11:14 pm
My site’s still down.
November 5th, 2006 at 11:51 pm
Milan: If people would use the discussion.dreamhost.com forum, they would have access to “proper” threading, and a site this was designed for discussion (which a blog is not). The use of blogging software for *reporting* staus information is completely appropriate; the fact that visitors ignore the blogs format and purpose and insist on *using it as* a discussion vehicle is not Dreamhost’s fault (though they *could* prevent it by simply turning off comments
).

I am getting sick of all these site downs and ups. I was trying to upload files from my dying laptop when this decided to crash and burn. If I am lucky, I will be able to save them some other way.
I will not be renewing with dreamhost when my current period is up. I am sick to death of unreliable webhosting in exchange for insanely large numbers that few of us will ever be able to use, and unless something is done about the technical service fast I imagine I will not be the only person jumping off this titanic while it sinks beneath us.
November 6th, 2006 at 2:01 am
All my websites are down for almost 24 hours now and there has been no response from Dreamhost support. The websites were also down for several hours last Friday. I will start looking for a new host.
November 6th, 2006 at 7:30 am
Come on peeps cheer up. Service may not be 100% reliable, but what hosting really is unless you’re prepared to pay big bucks for it? I sympathise with 24 hour down time… that’s not good at all, but imagine someone told you your PC had to be on 24 hours a day serving 1000 people, and that in 12 months you could have .1% downtime, that’s about 8 hours off line in 12 months. And now imagine that this was year after year. Think about it… hardware has a limited life span, and 24/7/365 isn’t going to help. Now imagine that there are people outside those 1000 who want to screw you over just for the hell of it, and people in that 1000 who don’t know what they’re doing that screw things up for you. Finally imagine that you got a power outage and the backup generator that your mate told you he’d installed was a bicycle pump that you were going to have to operate.
All that is going to cause problems, and all of that is going to lead to less reliable hardware, which is going to mean down time. I think Dreamhost do a great job for a small cost. Yes it can be frustrating. But let me leave you with this…
How many other hosts are this honest and informative?
November 6th, 2006 at 8:42 am
I think Dreamhost should turn off comments on the status blog. Using every server outage as an excuse to resume general bitching about the quality of service is not helpful. That should be done in the forums.
November 6th, 2006 at 3:10 pm
I can not login into my webmail (SquirrelMail). It says ERROR: Connection dropped by IMAP server. Is this related? Thanks.
November 12th, 2006 at 10:05 pm
Hi. I work for a hosting company. I sympathize with downtime and that you post it publicly, that’s pretty ballsy. Hearing all these people complain so nastily, we deal with that a lot. Keep your heads up, I’m sure you’re doing the best you can do, and I’m probably going to open an account if not just because of the honesty displayed all over your site.
