Dreamhost is driving me crazy!!! I’m sick of all the problems over the last 6 months – now my server is down! WTF dreamhost?

Had 1-2 good months and now Charm is back to crap again. My phone is ringing nonstop from pissed customers that I spent a lot of capital calming down after all the summer months problems….

Why don’t you people understand???? If you pay double the amount you pay at dreamhost then you can expect to receive redundancy for every single machine that DH hosts.

As you DON’T, then you SHOULDN’T expect to receive such protection from hardware failures.

It really isn’t that complicated!

You pay crap money you get crap service. Nightmarehost are no different to anyone else

Can’t access the panel…. didn’t know where else to post this.

AARARGH i was reading your Wiki about FTP users and i´m furious if i understood this correctly.

I can create multiple ftp users but i can only access the files by logging onto that user account.

i CAN´T acces the files via http ????!!!!

What about subdomains??? let´s say i wanna create a subdomain for my friend to host his stuff.. I don´t wanna do everything for him, i want him to be able to upload his stuff to the subdomain WITHOUT using my account!!!

if i understand this correctly this whole system is stupid :S

Yes you can. Use WebFTP link from the control panel and punch in the username and password for that account and you can access your subdomain from the web anywhere.

The trick your missing here, is to make unique usernames and passwords with your account. Log into the control panel GO “Users -> Manage Users -> Click on “Add New User” link at the bottom – make it either FTP only or Shell and wait about 10-15 minutes.

You’ll need to move your website over to the newly created virtual directory made after you do this, so don’t be surprised if your website disappears after you make the user.

Log into FTP with the username and password you made and upload your website.

Now you can let the other person use the account without them accessing your other domains/subdomains.

Hope that helps.

Why don’t you start learning the system instead of condemming it – you’ll find alot more helpful people out there if you ask nicely instead of starting your conversations with “Stupid Dreamhost….”

And for the last time, I wish people would stop bitching about failures when they happen. You paying what.. $7.95 a month for stupid amounts of bandwidth and space and your bitching because it’s down? I really think some people need to get out of their basements and live a little. I think I’m online a fair amount but I have a full time job and family, and I rarely see my sites offline, I don’t think its remotely fair to expect any sort of uptime gaurantee for the price your paying. If it really is that bad, go somewhere else, but the thing is, somewhere else is more expensive, so it’s just easier to troll the boards and bitch about the service. Sad really.

Oh yeah after you make the new username, you’ll need to change your domain hosting to the new username… then proceed.. :)

Ivar,

Welcome to *nix operating systems. Your failure to understand *nix style permissions and DNS on shared servers doesn’t make the “system” stupid – it just means you don’t understand it. You cand easily do all the things you complained in your “comment” about not being able to do once you learn a few things. Keep reading the wiki and learn how web hosting on a *nix server works and you should be fine.

You might also consider availing yourself of the Dreamhost Forums (http://discussion.dreamhost.com) in addition to tech support tickets submitted from the panel if you don’t understand something / need help. This blog is not a “help” forum, and posting such stuff her only makes you look ignorant.

Hehehe thanks for all the comments. Sorry about me condemning before hand. I figured it out before i read your comments though :D and works fine.

What i did was create a subdomain for each user and assigned that user to each subdomain. However i have yet to find a way to make it so that a special folder on the main domain (not sub) is only accessable to certain users without allowing them root access but i´m gonna read more about it

Sorry about the outburst and thanks alot for the help :D

Good work Ivar – you’ll find that the forums at discussion.dreamhost.com are a lot more useful than dreamhoststatus.com

i love dreamhost u guys are all haterz

Thanks you dreamhost for the great work done. Dreamhost Rocks!
