Server Jalapa under attack!

Posted (November 23rd, 2006 at 11:05 pm PST) by micah

The server jalapa is being hit with an unknown Denial Of Service attack at the moment which is saturating its switch.

This switch saturation is in turn affecting the following servers:

burton
euclid
hoover
highland
locust
pico
venice

We’re working on finding the target IP for the attack so we can stop it. Once that’s done we’ll post an all clear.

Sorry about the inconvenience, it appears that not even Thanksgiving is safe from internet troublemakers :(

— UPDATE —
The offending IP has been null routed at our core router and things are returning to normal. We apologize again for the inconvenience.

Happy DreamHost Turkey Day Team!

That’s pretty cold hearted. Good luck guys. Happy Thanksgiving.

damn all my websites are hosted on locust !!! Hopefuly you guys could get it back up asap :(

That’s pretty low to dos a dh hosted site on thanksgiving… let those poor techs enjoy the day. :(

Cheers mates, happy t-day and here’s hoping black friday is not in your datacenter! (eg: lights stay on… :) )

In the moment “napoleon” is offline also :(

(If it is not for me only…)

Luckily it is online again, huh :)

Wow, too bad you didn’t get the day off :(
I know I gave thanks for our on-the-ball Dreamhost team!

Thanks for helping out during the holidays Dreamhost Support. My site’s not on any of those servers and it’s down as of 9:15 AM EST. Praying for a fix as soon as humanly possible. Thanks again!

The servers pepsi and twix (at least) are completely down and there is no way to get in touch with support because the web panel is DOWN, Still DOS? :S

@marcoss

I’m on twix, and my websites are fine… You sure it is not tied to your mysql server or something?

Sorry for that, it seems like my ISP is blocking some dreamhost IP’s, I’ve just ssh’d thru a proxy and it’s working fine. I’ll have to make a not-friendly phone call, fortunately there is no thanksgiving here ;)

Yeah, I figured something was up last night when I couldn’t even get a shell prompt. Thanks for taking care of us.

How do you find what server you are on?

To find your server name, go to Users -> Manage Users and then look under “Machine” in the columns. Those are your server names for those users.

My web site has been down for over 12 hours! It’s now 7:25 p.m. I had planned on working on my site all day. I lost a full day’s worth of work! When will my site be up and running again?!?!?!?

Napoleon is down for me too. All of my sites are down. Was this downtime planned? Very inconvenient as I was right in the middle of working on something..

Deblume is also down.

website is up, but cannot ftp to BAM at all :/

says “server actively refuses connections”

Our websites on mayo are inaccessible as well.

My site randomly goes down (Apparently, we’re being DDoS’d for stealing our own work)..

I wonder how long it’ll take for DreamHost to trace who’s behind this all.

Thats a bummer! Who’d these people think they are! At least he got his just deserves.

Even though it is fixed, I still cannot seem to access the site, but my friend can (I host his site on my space)…. weird, eh? :S

Well we could solve this the traditional way.

After finding out the ip, how bout we go and attack right back.

But I guess that wouldn’t be too ethical and manly. :)

Do we have an indication of when this will be fixed? hours? days?

implies to me that they think that the issue is resolved. Asking about it two days later is probably indication that you have another problem or it’s restarted. Report away.

Well My site was down all morning, now it is partially up. Some locations can see it, cannot be seen from within my building(?)

Has anyone else still got their site down now? Mine still not workin…

My sites, which are under taffy, are failing since two weeks or so. Today is just a hell. 5 minutes up, 2 hours down… Don’t know what happens with dreamhost…

I also have several domains on Taffy. I’ve always found Dreamhost really good (for the relatively short time i’ve hosted domains with them), as far as hosting companies go, but the last 2 or 3 weeks have been terrible. I’m getting downtime on an almost daily basis, sometimes more than once a day. The server-wide tracking system advises that problems are resolved when they are not. Just at a time that i’ve moved more sites over from another company because they were unreliable!

I’ve been noticing quite a bit of downtime as well…. on Taffy. It’s getting a little old!

I’m in the same boat.. I feel for Dreamhost, as this is probably a nightmare, but I think major discounts on re-upping for those affected should be being discussed here. This is entirely too much downtime. Redundancy? Backups? What’s the deal?

My site is hosed right now.

All our sites are down, When it will be up again?

My site is on Jalapa. It went down yesterday morning, was down all day, then was back up for a few hours, now down again. How frustrating! Is anyone else out there having the exact same experience?

@ Harry: same here. Everything’s down, my 3 websites on Jalapa. Meh. The big slowdown started yesterday as well and now nothing works. It’s not good at all, especially for one of my sites but I guess we just have to be patient.

Thanks DreamHost team for all your efforts, I know you’re working on this.

Cheers.

Jalapa down again? All of my sites are shot ;(

Yestarday and today I have my sites down, I am a little bit frustrated :(

anyone having trouble with melrose ??

Why there’s no new post about what’s going on ? Obviously it seems many people have their site down. I’m on Oreo and my website is playing up/down since this weekend. No reply from Dreamhost so far …

My webpanel at fanta seems to be down… I just realized, how are we supost to send support reqests for downed webpanels if we cant access the support? :S

Yup, my web panel is down too.

Panel is down too. How can I submit a help ticket if I can’t access the panel?

could you also please check spree server.

My site is down. Support Requested 3 days 3 hours ago. No reply so far…

Response times are very , very long.
Those days It became really impossible to work.
My server is pocky and for mysql it is sabu
Could we hope an improvement and when ?

S.O.S. leeloo is very slow right now! SOS!

Right.. this is amazing. I can’t believe they aren’t updating anything on the subject. I’ve always been happy with DreamHost, but this is crazy. I guess finding a new host is the next step.

my email has been down for 24 hours. my two open support tickets haven’t been touched.

MPP your site has this error id: “bad_httpd_conf”

Just to let you know.

yeah.. that’s the same error I’ve been seeing. it’s the reason we’re posting to this forum. At the moment, mine seems to be working for now.

Hey, DH crew. pernod is also getting spam.

So much so, that over the past couple of months, I’ve created this webpage in conjuction with some of the data provided from http://spamhuntress.com/ . So far, I’ve come up with a LONG list of spammers that I have banned from my wiki or message board. To see the list of IP addresses that have send me spam so far, see http://neko.bushidohacks.com/index.php?title=Help:Banned_IP_addresses

Take’em down, DH crew!

DH should rename Taffy to YoYo. At least we’d know what to expect…

Thanks you dreamhost for the great work done. Dreamhost Rocks!
