ns2.dreamhost.com down for short while
Our offsite DNS server, NS2 is currently offline due to an apparent attack against the facility it is located in. We’re working with the provider to get more information regarding an ETA and a more solid cause for the outage. Until then, you may experience slow connections to some of your sites.
– UPDATE 2006-12-01 13:17 PST –
After speaking with the network engineer at our secondary facility it appears (as of this morning anywawy) that the attack is still under way. Their upstream providers say we’re still getting upwards of 30Mb/s in traffic towards our NS2 IP. They’ll be checking on it again shortly and hopefully it will have subsided enough to get us back online. We apologize for this inconvenience and appreciate your patience while we get this sorted out.
– UPDATE 2006-12-01 12:39 PST –
It looks like this problem is fully resolved now. Sorry for the late notification, but we wanted to be sure the problem was fixed and not just an intermittent patch.

Is that why dreamhoststatus.com was down? Oh well, keep up the good work!
November 30th, 2006 at 6:17 pm
My site is not slow…it is gone…at least I know why. Thanks for staying on top of things
November 30th, 2006 at 6:26 pm
Yeah, I checked your site (bynaturesdesigns.com) via ns3.dreamhost.com and ns1.dreamhost.com… I got the error “connection timed out; no servers could be reached” from nslookup. That makes me thing something else is wrong with your site.. Good luck, Mr. O’Brien!
November 30th, 2006 at 6:37 pm
Same here, no website =(
November 30th, 2006 at 6:44 pm
I can’t acces my web
How long does it takes to fix?
btw what kind of attack?
*I just host my blog with you and now I can’t access it
November 30th, 2006 at 6:46 pm
Both my sites are down :’(
November 30th, 2006 at 6:51 pm
I’m getting no response on my site as well. Even if I SSH in, I get the password prompt, but I don’t get past it (which makes it look less like a DNS problem - since I can connect - and more of a server problem). I’m on lifesaver if that makes a difference.
November 30th, 2006 at 6:57 pm
My site is working fine.. and all DNS servers work except ns2.dreamhost.com, which gives the error:
” Error fetching SOA from ns2.dreamhost.com [66.201.54.66], request timed out. Probably DNS server is offline”
Anyways, my site is fine.
November 30th, 2006 at 7:12 pm
Seems like they got it fixed…
myowncustomlayout.com and deathbydb.com are both back up for me.
November 30th, 2006 at 7:20 pm
The server where my blog is hosted (tab) has a load average of 41.49. What’s going on?
November 30th, 2006 at 7:26 pm
server up and down all day long for 3-4 days in row (maybe longer, as I’ve been out of town). I’m normally not one to complain, as my site is a hobby, but it’s becoming a major drag. I’d hate to have to change hosts again. Stability has been terrible the past 4 months or so (but everyone already knows that)
November 30th, 2006 at 10:12 pm
Just request a move of server. I’m on cupcake, and haven’t had downtime in over 5 months.
November 30th, 2006 at 10:20 pm
I’m on dagon and still waiting, must have been quite an outage.
I guess not more working for me tonight.
November 30th, 2006 at 10:26 pm
My sites are all appear to be working, looks like the DNS problems aren’t having an affect on me.
December 1st, 2006 at 2:27 am
Ah, there are still problems with DNS. I hope you’ll get it under control asap. (and that you’ll start to catch up with the support tickets)
All the best!! (You deserve that lads!)

Is anyone else having problems setting up discussion lists? I set up a list through DreamHost, they sent me a link, and Mailman says that there is “no such list”. Any insight?
Thanks so much!

December 1st, 2006 at 8:48 am
I cannot move my 5 sites to DH because NS is down. Fix it ASAP, please.
December 1st, 2006 at 9:08 am
Mine has something odd happening - the “under construction” main page is there, but neither of Joomla or VirtueCart working.?
Apparently I’m on Brisk server.
December 1st, 2006 at 9:09 am
Can we get the official information, is it fixed or not? I don’t know if I should start my PPC campaigns again. Is it possible that “short while” means 15 hours in Dreamhost?
December 1st, 2006 at 9:50 am
Im showing ns1 and 2 down at the moment - ns3 is answering, but slow
December 1st, 2006 at 10:09 am
I’m showing NS1 up, NS2 down, and NS3 sluggish. I’m getting 503 errors when posting form data, which may be related.
December 1st, 2006 at 10:14 am
Why does Dreamhost constantly screw up? I’m moving to another host.
December 1st, 2006 at 10:21 am
Now it seems the panel is down… Wait–it’s up, but it’s taking 14 seconds to load on my 8mbps cable modem connection.
December 1st, 2006 at 10:23 am
Hi,
How are you guys doing, I can’t change the DNS for a domain while NS2 is down (SIDN is very strict apparently).
How about an update..
greets
December 1st, 2006 at 1:26 pm
Well, my entire web panel has clicked. It doesn’t find my users, nor my domains.. Suck.
December 1st, 2006 at 1:48 pm
Can anyone recommend a hosting company that doesn’t go down every other day?
December 1st, 2006 at 1:49 pm
To Aximon: Have you tried to set nameservers to ns1.dreamhost.com and ns3.dreamhost.com? Only 2 nameservers are required.
December 1st, 2006 at 2:41 pm
The domain mamutebrasil.com.br is offline
December 1st, 2006 at 2:48 pm
The domain mamutebrasil.com.br is online again!
December 1st, 2006 at 3:14 pm
You are having problems with both ns2 and ns3. Our domain is also experiencing sporadic time outs when mailservers do mx record queries, so outgoing mail is sometimes not accepted.
December 1st, 2006 at 8:24 pm
I hope you all have opened support requests with DH, this way your issue will be tracked.
They don’t read (or if they do, they don’t reply) here.
Last night I had a DNS snafu (unrelated) and my support case was closed in > 30 minutes.
December 1st, 2006 at 11:07 pm
The ns3 have problems too! Good work for you!
December 2nd, 2006 at 1:43 am
I don’t know WTF is going on. I use DH and Everydns as my primary DNSes but everydns.net is down too atm.
It seems like they attack all large DNS servers that they can find.
These attackers should go hell!!!
December 2nd, 2006 at 2:47 am
@ Aximon
SIDN is always nagging about (any) DNS-servers. Do a NS-servercheck on their website but leave out the third nameserver. Usualy it works that way. Their new DNS system sucks.
December 2nd, 2006 at 3:21 am
Hi snewp,
Thnx for the response, but I already tried that, SIDN will find the other nameservers and the switch will get rejected.
And since it is my registrar who is doing the checking I don’t have any control over that.

Dillon K.,
How is being subjected to a distributed denial of service attack “Dreamhost messing up?” A DDoS is the product of a cracker (not hacker, a cracker is malicious, hackers are just curious) who has set up a happy network of machines dedicated to constantly trying to talk to a machine, or a group of machines, loudly and constantly enough to cause the machines to not be able to handle the workload. The Dreamhost NS2 nameserver was getting almost four times the traffic that your internet connection gives you for bandwidth, which is enough to seriously hamper pretty much any host.
So, I say again: a DDoS is not the product of Dreamhost messing up, it is the product of a cracker, some easy-to-write malware, and someone who either has a grudge, too much free time, or some way to profit from Dreamhost being crippled.

my site (zocorp.com) is fine and fast. i do have stacks of downtime though… i’m on sawtelle.
December 2nd, 2006 at 8:34 pm
Yeah my website is kind of slow but my email is gone completely, was having problems with the login thursday evening and last night friday it went down and hasnt returned.
December 2nd, 2006 at 8:54 pm
My allery is completely screwed up. I had it trying to force me to upgrade but that would not let me finish the uprade process for my gallery no matter what I did. To be honest I am really concerned since I rely on the gallery to present my products to the world.
I hope this gets fixed soon.
December 3rd, 2006 at 1:50 am
I’m having no problems. My domain is running fine, and the DNS server ns2.dreamhost.com seems to be up and running at the moment.
Good job Dreamhost!
December 3rd, 2006 at 5:01 am
I can reach all my domains fine, but sometimes it takes a minute or two to connect.
The panel on the other hand… I’ve been trying it now for a few hours, once in a while I’ll connect fine, then I have to wait again to access another part of the panel when needed…
December 3rd, 2006 at 5:42 am
Must be some attack..
Or did your God forbid you to work in weekends..
Hope this gets resolved soon..

To Jared: not good jo b Dreamhost! You may check ns2 here:

It’s not fixed yet (62 hours).
December 3rd, 2006 at 11:45 am
main board and test board.. and ftp are down..
December 3rd, 2006 at 4:56 pm
Out of curiosity, is this the same DDoS attack that /. carried earlier today?
December 3rd, 2006 at 8:52 pm
Witek-
Even before it went down it as “variable”. Remember that DNS isn’t a fixed connection, it specifically uses a short timeout so it will fail over to another more available server.
Maybe the problem is their outside hosting company!
December 4th, 2006 at 12:11 am
“Will be down for a short while”??? It has been days and days. What is going on and why is there no more information?
December 4th, 2006 at 8:20 am
NS2 went down, more or less permanently, at about the same time that I filed for a domain name redelegation to your servers - almost four days ago - and it has since been rejected as a result of the outage. Please - we know you are working hard, but provide us with a real ETA.
