Networking issues resolved
Our network has been stable all evening, so everything should be back to normal. We’re opening a case with Cisco as it seems that the memory outage was likely triggered by a bug in the OS. We’ll update again if we get any additional information worth passing along.

My site is still down! Booooo.
December 14th, 2006 at 7:15 pm
Bill… up when i just tested it.
December 14th, 2006 at 9:16 pm
Bart, yes your site is loading slow and not all images are showing.
December 14th, 2006 at 9:58 pm
Bart and Kevin I just tried both your sites and they are now loading very fast.
December 14th, 2006 at 10:53 pm
After reading all the posts from fellow irate customers (and laughing out of frustration) - thanks for getting this sorted, finally.
December 14th, 2006 at 10:58 pm
Mail still dead for me. It’s been down for over 6 hours now since at least my last post on the previous thread (December 14th, 2006 at 3:26 pm).
December 14th, 2006 at 11:49 pm
hix my site still down…can anyone access it ?
December 15th, 2006 at 12:02 am
One of my sites, http://www.michaelsphotography.net is fine. But the other, http://www.goldsirius.com wont load. Any ideas?
December 15th, 2006 at 12:04 am
My site is very slow slow slow…..zzzzZZzz
December 15th, 2006 at 3:51 am
The networking issues may be resolved, but my site http://www.ermelo.org loads very slow… Hopefully this problem will be solved soon as well…
December 15th, 2006 at 4:28 am
Erm… it was resolved for about an hour or so and now it’s down again. One of my 3 sites is down and I can’t access my WordPress admin. Thanks DreamHost, this is getting better and better.
December 15th, 2006 at 4:55 am
heh my sites been slow since sign up now its 7am eastern time and i cant even download more then 2 files out of my ftp before it times out :/ any idea when this will be fixed cus obviously it aint
December 15th, 2006 at 5:18 am
Very bad over here. Cmon guys, i know you’re better than this. I’ve seen it.
Please don’t make me look bad to my clients. Please.
December 15th, 2006 at 5:18 am
lol @ Baloney I agree with you there….. I’d switch over to my free hosting till they sort this out “if i could even use my ftp”!
the free hosting i was on is about 10x times faster then this has been for me in the past 3 days (the total time ive been signed up)
at first once my accoutn was first activated i uploaded 10mb of files and it said i reached my disk quota LOL
Anyways yeah this sucks :/
December 15th, 2006 at 5:57 am
Mickael, I’ve got the same problem … but it was a dns redirection problem ! Not a dreamhost problem for me.
December 15th, 2006 at 6:12 am
Last Saturday’s database server crash, now this–at a time when my students are trying to get everything in (end of semester). Ouch, this hurts. They’re already wary of online learning.
December 15th, 2006 at 7:19 am
My sites are also being extremely slow to respond (although occasionally they do perform as expected), This is maddening, but you get what you pay for I suppose.
December 15th, 2006 at 7:22 am
my database is slow . they are saying that solved this problem . but they did not solved:mad:
December 15th, 2006 at 7:31 am
I hate to admit it, but we get what we pay for. I used to pay more, and wow… my sites worked almost all the time. now I pay less and my sites are hot and miss at best. FTP timing out every 5 files downloaded? yay Dreamhost.
I keep hoping they’ll fix the issues, but instead, I can’t seem to even get the darn support page to load. They say the problems are fixed? I say think again, keep fixing. I’m hoping things get back on track, this is just plain stupid.
December 15th, 2006 at 7:32 am
Mail still dead for me and I’ve still not received a response from Dreamhost on my trouble ticket. It’s now been down for over 14 hours since at least my last post on the previous thread (December 14th, 2006 at 3:26 pm). Lame.
December 15th, 2006 at 7:39 am
Is anyone else on Fidget? We’re having stall out/delay/drop connection issues. Filed a support ticket early schmearly this morning, but no response yet. This is killin me!!!!!
December 15th, 2006 at 7:43 am
SuzSays… I’m not on fidget, but am having the same issue. Sounds like from the other posts here this morning, it may be Dreamhost-wide, or at least affecting a lot of servers.
December 15th, 2006 at 7:46 am
The server at panel.dreamhost.com is taking too long to respond. Timing out, same as my site at http://aireo.dreamhost.com/forum/ It’s 8:45 AM CST
December 15th, 2006 at 8:01 am
I’m not on Fidget, but on Mills and having also lots of time-outs…
December 15th, 2006 at 8:02 am
flanders.dreamhost.com is not pingable or responding via http:

December 15th, 2006 at 8:02 am
I checked the DreamHost panel to see if this was a system-wide problem or not. The reply to my query was, no way, it’s not system-wide, please send us a help request. I did and got no reply, it’s got to be a big problem. Bleh, I haven’t been able to access my website since this morning, it’s now 4pm in Belgium. This is uncool.
December 15th, 2006 at 8:05 am
I’ll say it again, this is ridiculous. It’s been more than 12hrs and this is still going on. They have so many tickets that I have not gotten a response from the one I issued 1 week ago.
Just how many tickets do you have open regarding a particular issue ? If you only have one ticket per issue then fine if your opening a new ticket every two minutes then no wonder they are struggling with no time to actually repair the faults but having to sift the crap in the tickets.
Oh and for everyone else whos moaning saying this isnt working please fix blah blah thats what the ticket system is for not these threads.
December 15th, 2006 at 8:06 am
Correction here’s what I got from HEAD (a timeout):

December 15th, 2006 at 8:21 am
Baloney - yeah one ticket per issue is good
Your not flooding them is a good example of how complaints should be handled by the end user..
Ive worked numberous helldesks and it can be a right bitch. Not to say that DH shouldnt have acknowledged your ticket by now though a week seems a little long in the tooth.
Lets hope your stuff comes back up pretty quick.
And working IT freelance like I do doesnt give much leeway - Today I have had 22 emails from a client saying his email is down … its hosted locally for him on his SBS server so after being able to remote in and check email is flowing. Ask him how hes connected to the network. … Turns out he couldnt be arsed to fish the network cable from the back of the desk to plug it in his computer and thought it would just work. and reorted to emailing me from his colleagues pc…
Some people shouldnt have computers
perhaps I should send him a box to pack it in and return it to me. least that would solve the problem.
Dave
December 15th, 2006 at 8:35 am
Same thing, very slow load times, and images are not always loading on pages as of 10 am
I can tell this has been affecting my site today, as user traffic is far lower than normal.
December 15th, 2006 at 8:43 am
Can’t connect to my ftp site either. Can’t work. Losing time and money.
December 15th, 2006 at 8:54 am
“We’ll update again if we get any additional information worth passing along.” Or not. I don’t mind some network issues on occasion, but at least keep us up with what’s happening.
December 15th, 2006 at 9:00 am
FTP on crackerjack is HORRENDOUS or down altogether. Has been all morning. Sheesh, managed to calm my clients down after yesterday and now this. Like Kathy said, losing time and money.
December 15th, 2006 at 9:04 am
I just don’t understand what happened. For five years or so Dreamhost was the most reliable, affordable, excellent hosting company on the web. And now all of a sudden it’s insultingly bad. I can’t seem to go a week without all of my sites going offline. This sucks.
December 15th, 2006 at 9:17 am
FWIW, all sites that I have clicked on in this page loaded extremely fast, including all images. I’ve had a very good experience with Dreamhost so far, my sites went down for about 45 minutes yesterday but that was the first significant downtime since early summer.
December 15th, 2006 at 9:17 am
Having troubles too.
Ftp is down, although it appears the page still loads.
December 15th, 2006 at 9:26 am
Yep, i was lured to dreamhost because of their reputation, i wish that reputation was holding true lately. Within the first two weeks i came up was when all the major site outages occured. It seems like this host is plagued with problems. I may just find another host, i am loosing money every hour that goes by. Thanks dreamhost! My ftp is mega slow and times out but my site is working ok, or seems to be.
December 15th, 2006 at 9:26 am
My site is working, going back and forth between fast and ‘not so fast’ load times. POP access seems to be down still, though.
December 15th, 2006 at 9:31 am
Having FTP issues on Cupcake. Anyone else?
December 15th, 2006 at 9:42 am
I’m really hoping this change that was made to the core router that caused all of this downtime was an emergency change. Otherwise, why was a change made to a production router during the middle of the day?? This should never happen unless completely necessary.
December 15th, 2006 at 9:46 am
Wow this is some cruddy service they offer us i got tickets that are 5 days old no replies notta and its been nothing but problems since sign up
yay dreamhost for sucking
freehosting is about 5+ times faster then ur hosting
December 15th, 2006 at 9:57 am
Unfortunately since DH has decided to become a low-cost, budget hosting service, this is what you should pretty much expect. It’s a shame, because we really liked them for the first two years we were here (you paid more, and things simply worked). It was truly a bargain, even at the higher prices (I think we were paying $50/mo when we signed up, now it’s $20).
Basically, if you’re on DH, you’re getting what you should expect for the money you’re paying … (as long as you’re not paying more than ~ $20/month - anyone paying for their more expensive packages is getting hosed IMO). You simply can;t expect a reliable service with excellent support for $10/month. You get a LOT here at DH for the money though in terms of everything else. And a few hours here and there of being down is again, pretty reasonable for the money.
We’ve decided to move our sites to a dedicated server at a more reliable provider. We’re paying a lot more (obviously), but for anything other than a casual site, you can’t afford the problems DH has on a recurring and routine basis. If your site isn’t the basis for your livelihood, DH is still an excellent bargain.
December 15th, 2006 at 10:13 am
Both mail and site are still timing out quite often. Hope this clears up today!
December 15th, 2006 at 10:23 am
my site will either load fine (2-3 seconds) or not at all (server timeout). I actually host several other sites with practically zero content and same thing. I recently put up kamikazeufos.com for a friend’s band and there’s something like 10k of data on the site. I originally thought it was some php (i have a lot of bells and whistles like google maps api) but doesn’t seem to be the problem. this makes ftp work a real pain. any thoughts? I think I’m on bob. or grog.
December 15th, 2006 at 10:24 am
my mail isnt working.
December 15th, 2006 at 10:29 am
I am timing out all of the time too, it is making it impossible to do anything. I hope this gets fixed soon.
December 15th, 2006 at 10:38 am
My mail has been dead for 2 days. Now I can’t even log into the dreamhost panel because none of my passwords work any more - so I can’t even get in to update the trouble ticket I initiated yesterday. Does anyone have any suggestions? I’ve emailed from my aol account and faxed to the number on the bottom of the support email I received from Daniel about 24 hours ago, who said nothing seemed to be wrong and did I want him to send me my password… aarrrggghhhh!
Dreamhost - if you’re listening - please just reset all my passwords and send the new one to my aol address. Thank you very much.
December 15th, 2006 at 10:42 am
This post should be updated by Dreamhost or a new one should be created because network issues are either not resolved or they were only reduced.
December 15th, 2006 at 10:46 am
My sites on Nexus are experiencing the same symptoms as ndrw. They’ll either load fine or timeout.
December 15th, 2006 at 10:51 am
wow, i jsut went to my webmail and it said the page doesnt even exist!
I went to my DH panel, and sure enough, all of a sudden, my webmail stuff for nufase.com is gone! my webmail for project-black.com is still there and working fine, but nufase is gone.
In my mail accounts, anthony@nufase.com is still there and listed. but in the webmail settings, it says I need to create an address associated with nufase.com to start my webmail service, I ALREADY HAVE ONE!
I sent a test email to anthony@nufase.com, and it got bounced back saing the address doesn’t exist!
WTF IS HAPPENING? IF I LOST ALL MY EMAILS SOMEONE MUST DIE!
December 15th, 2006 at 10:53 am
Networking issues is NOT resolved!
Our website is on jolt, and I get time out error!

Hey, my site works, and that makes me happy.
Especially because in a fit of insaity, I left my computer unlocked at home last night, and quite unfortunately had the ftp client up. He was trying to delete my site…
Yeah, I so totally win with the backups I ran yesterday.

Hm, it sure would be nice if someone (e.g., Google, amazon.com, Yahoo, etc.) who actually knows how to provide high availability and deal with failures were to enter this market and just kill off companies like DreamHost, etc. This is really awful.

its funny that the more often I visit these pages, I start to misread the categories: General Outrages, MySQL Outrages, Major Outrages
December 15th, 2006 at 11:29 am
@foo: go get dedicated hosting, if one of those companies offered hosting at the prices dreamhost does it would also have occasional problems
December 15th, 2006 at 11:39 am
weird
none of my sites are down (30+ sites) and all email is working like a charm… Oh and I’m on flanders too, with all of them, and oh yeah, almost forgot, all sites are DB driven with a huge amount of pages and images.
Oh darn, forgot something again… I make money with my sites that are hosted on a dedicated server, so stop whining about loosing money. If your site makes 300+ bucks a day you can afford a nice dedicated server with 99.9% uptime.
December 15th, 2006 at 11:58 am
My website and e-mails are extremely slow … I am on gate server. Also, Control Panel has been extremely slow too …
December 15th, 2006 at 12:06 pm
My site is inaccessible and cant connect to ftp server 90% of time. Socket error…
What is goin on?
December 15th, 2006 at 12:13 pm
I have to agree, the issue is NOT resolved. I still have intermittent email, FTP, and http issues.
December 15th, 2006 at 12:14 pm
@ baloney
Downtime indeed, whatever the reason, is a pain in the behind. But the only thing I see on this statussite is people loosing money. In my opinion we’re talking about people running a 3 bucks a day wenstore, or a 150 clicks a day SEO site. What I meant to say, or vent, is that when someone is making money, frequently, the should invest in a dedicated server and be willing to pay the price. What DH charges a month, compared to the amount of data you can store AND the bandwidth is a laugh compared to dedicated, with a capped connection and a strickt rule for bandwidth. Loosing money is never funny. DH isn’t happy with outages, no host is, but anyone is free to go, or to take some outages for granted. This is btw the firt major outage I’ve experienced…
December 15th, 2006 at 12:31 pm
All of my stuff is still at a crawl, if it works at all.
The fact that this blog is updated so infrequently is only slightly less annoying than the fact that I have to check it so often because I’m wondering where my service went.
PS:
LOOSE == NOT TIGHT

LOSING

Stupid HTML-stripping.

LOOSING IS *NOT* A WORD.

You’re new, huh? Missed the really ugly months earlier in the year?
December 15th, 2006 at 1:19 pm
the WEB PANEL has been going up and down like a prom skirt all day
December 15th, 2006 at 1:20 pm
so the web panel is down and mail is failing on my domains again
December 15th, 2006 at 1:26 pm
Um, I can’t get on my web panel. Lame.
December 15th, 2006 at 1:51 pm
@DVG
so my engrisj is not so good, and a typo was made, big deal. There were more typo’s in there, maybe you could correct those for me too?
silly europeans…heh
@davelog
lol not new, and no I haven’t missed a thing. I guess planters is on top of things.
December 15th, 2006 at 1:52 pm
Mail still dead. I’ve also started (should have really started this earlier) sending periodic emails to my Dreamhost email and cc’ing a working email address so I can do a portmortum of the lossage when/if this ever gets resolved.
December 15th, 2006 at 2:25 pm
@snewp
Not to pick (See my initial post in this thread), but you are new if you have not had a major outage. In the last year alone they have had 2 major core network outages that took out everything that is at DH. And those 2 are not unique. The dozens of other outages are hit and miss, so you might have been spared those.
Unless you don’t consider your site being unavailable for longer than 12 hours (or a day) “major”.
Again, for the price, you get plenty with DH. Reliability isn’t one of them. But, real reliability costs. Rackspace, for example, you’re looking at $380/mo for their basic managed (dedicated) server. The solution we are going with at another well-regarded host is $170/mo unmanaged.
For $10-$20/mo … DH is a decent value. Excellent features, standard/poor reliability.
December 15th, 2006 at 2:33 pm
@roach
I haven’t really noticed the former 2 core-outages, but it might be that tose happened while I wasn’t monitoring my websites running on DH’s servers. Your comment about rackspace was the point I was trying to make earlier. I monitor my major (rackspace) sites all the time, they cost too much to allow any glitch in the system, but with DH I’m not that picky. A 24 hour outage is certainly a major issue, but to be honest, I kinda expect this to happen on a ‘cheap’ host like DH.
December 15th, 2006 at 3:00 pm
@Stéphanie: Your site loads just fine here
And the issues seem to be resolved now *knock on my woodie* :p
December 15th, 2006 at 3:09 pm
is anyone else’s site(s) loading very, very slow right now?
December 15th, 2006 at 3:10 pm
My sites still load slow or not at all.
Server is Kearny
December 15th, 2006 at 3:16 pm
My website is loading slow…
December 15th, 2006 at 3:17 pm
My domains are running slow and I cannot upload any files via FTP without it timing out ….. I would report an issue but the panel is down!

@snewp
The real problem a lot of the “Old timers” (ourselves included) have is that DH didn’t start out as a “bargain basement” hosting service It actually used to really be awesome as far as reliability goes.
I hate that I have to move things to a new host .. it’s a pain. While the perfect software developers out there never hard-code anything (directory paths, SQL server names, etc) … I’m not perfect. I *think* I’ve fixed everything so that I can just move the code and change a couple variables, but you know how that is
There’s somewhere in the neighborhood of 30k lines of perl that I’ve wirtten to run our site.
I know I should have seen the writing on the wall when the prices for DH packages started to drop and they started giving away ridiculous amounts of bandwidth and space …. but hindsight is always 20/20. I’m digging having an unmanaged server to play with though, Some of my admin skills had started to slip as I’d been focused on software dev for the last 2 years, and I’m crash-coursing back into it!
December 15th, 2006 at 7:50 pm
Mail still dead. It’s been well over 30 hours now. Also, some of my comments evidently have been removed from these boards. Great, who runs this thing? Dreamhost?
December 15th, 2006 at 10:39 pm
My blog was down too, but an email to support solved it,
Make sure you guys get in touch with dreamhost support.
December 15th, 2006 at 10:46 pm
Damn. Mine’s down at this point. Off to the support emails I go!
December 16th, 2006 at 12:59 am
I wonder if this might be due to a big storm where the servers are. I noticed a lot of non-dreamhost sites started timing out too.
December 16th, 2006 at 1:37 am
Hm, panel.dreamhost.com is crawling and imaps is still dead (TCP port
993 open, usual username/password not working).
December 16th, 2006 at 1:52 am
There’s no access to the panel for at least 25 minutes (since I started trying to work today), and I can’t file a support ticket as a result. Please make the panel work again.
December 16th, 2006 at 1:57 am
Can’t get to my panel.. connection times out,
then gave me a virus and shaved my cat..
but really, can’t get to the panel. no fun, I wanted to play with my hosting plans!
frustrated word!
December 16th, 2006 at 2:26 am
No panel access. Damn.
December 16th, 2006 at 2:39 am
no panel access.. sigh..
December 16th, 2006 at 2:43 am
I cannot access the panel either!!!
December 16th, 2006 at 2:47 am
Inconvenient that the cp went down right now, as I had to do some tasks… oh well… hopefully it’ll be back asap
December 16th, 2006 at 3:02 am
*sigh*
Just when I want to do some work.
December 16th, 2006 at 3:04 am
the panel is still down
December 16th, 2006 at 3:13 am
how ironic is this? the panel is down, but we cant report it because the only way to file a ticket is THREW THE PANEL! this is not a very good impression….
December 16th, 2006 at 3:16 am
LOL, thats funny stuff. But i think DH might know its down. (Well Lets Hope They Do)
December 16th, 2006 at 3:23 am
suppory@dreamhost.com still works though
December 16th, 2006 at 4:01 am
hey, am I the only one that can’t log into the panel :O)
and I don’t think suppory is working at the moment…
December 16th, 2006 at 4:08 am
ahhhhh yes thankyou thankyou jesus. Panel is back online
December 16th, 2006 at 4:12 am
yes! its back! i was getting antsy.
December 16th, 2006 at 4:33 am
Bullshit! it’s still responsing slowly, and become slower and slower!
December 16th, 2006 at 6:59 am
my site is still down too
December 16th, 2006 at 7:09 am
PEOPLE ARE LOOSING MONEY ‘COS OF THIS DOWNTIME!!!
December 16th, 2006 at 7:50 am
I would be VERY surprised if your comments were removed from dreamhoststatus.com. The acusation after the abuse heaped on DH in these boards is nearly offensive. If they had time to read the boards and decide they don’t like you they would certainly have time to get the systems that are reported down back up. It *MIGHT* be possible that comments including swearing may be deleted if noticed, but I’m sure you wouldn’t stoop to that level.
Not everyone experiences the same level of outages. My sites are monitored and I showed two 15 minute outages. (Granted, my granularity was 15 minutes so it could have been as long as 30 minutes.)
December 16th, 2006 at 9:20 am
No good, no good.. My website is not functioning properly for the third day already. https:// was working, http:// wasn’t - so that was something like big problem. But now neither one works - so I’d say it’s a HUGE problem, god damn it. And support also got slower than it ever was. Hope they will resolve all the things REALLY soon.

Our whole account has been disabled. Could this be part of this larger problem? We are all paid up. I don’t understand what could have happened. I have sent 3 requests into support on this, but heard nothing. Does this seem related to the problems mentioned here????
December 16th, 2006 at 2:57 pm
Hi Laury quit a few people have posted the same problem with a bad http conf file hopefully dreamhost support will correct it soon.

R Beaty - Submit a support request. We can’t fix it. We’re just users like you.
December 17th, 2006 at 2:27 am
just signed up to the site and been having problems ever since, not a very good start.
December 17th, 2006 at 2:36 am
no, not again - panel is really slow and this time it is not my internet connection =|
December 17th, 2006 at 2:47 am
I’ve been with DH since August 2002, the outages are always there, no matter what hosting provider you have, you learn to live with them, i mean look at me i was busy upgrading a 15000 user 1gb database forum, and everything crashed, yeah i am pissed but what can you do.
right now the panel wont open, i can only ftp and ssh to my hosting server, my sites are all down as is mail
Good Morning from Greece
December 17th, 2006 at 2:56 am
So this is how it will always be, no ways to change things, have a back up host?
December 17th, 2006 at 3:12 am
So, you’re saying this is always happening. And this is normal if they do not reply to my emails for more than 24 hours? And I should learn to live with that? Someone could offer some better host?
December 17th, 2006 at 3:38 am
Brandon: For this money - no. =) I could be your personal support for 8 hours a day chatting with you for about 30$ a hour. Are you interested? =)
December 17th, 2006 at 3:51 am
My site works great. Faster than it’s ever been. Thanks Dreamhost - you got one satisfied customer anyway!
December 17th, 2006 at 6:38 am
My blog has been incredibly slow for over 24 hours now, flv videos that used to load in 20 seconds are now taking 10 minutes or longer. Anyone else on Wiggum having that problem?
December 17th, 2006 at 7:10 am
All of my domains are actually pulling a Internal Server Error (plus can’t find error pages) right now… very scary. *goes to make another backup*
December 17th, 2006 at 9:31 am
All morning my site has been giving a “Error 500 - Internal Server Error” message; Now I can’t even connect to it (”…can’t establish a connection to the server at http://www.klimis.net“) and the same error on all my other hosted sites.
Ungood.
December 17th, 2006 at 12:09 pm
i havent been able to access my website or e-mail for about 4 days…..and i just paid for another year. dammit!
December 17th, 2006 at 12:48 pm
Withholding payment would have only made it understandable that your site and email were down.
December 17th, 2006 at 1:03 pm
I have had problems with my website for 3-4 days. I have sent tech support email every time and I have been given a different answer every time. First I was told a temp folder had filled up and then I was told it was my .htaccess file. Which is funny because I have been using the same .htaccess file for 3 years… I guess it just decided to edit itself and cause problems….
I have been with Dreamhost since 2004 and moved many sites because of outages like these… every time a new outage hits, my domain name list with Dreamhost gets shorter and shorter every few months.
Some claim that Dreamhost’s econo-hosting comes with ups and downs, I don’t buy that lame excuse. I have had FREE service that was better and more reliable than this service.
I have also had a site hosted on another providers server since 1995 and the site has been monitored with a domain name monitoring service since 1999 and it has been down only once in that span of time.
Some people have come to expect that hosting outages are just part of hosting and while a few might be acceptable, Dreamhost’s record is almost unexcusable.
Most of the people who stand up for these outages with Dreamhost are the ones who never really knew how many times their site had actually been offline with Dreamhost or they are recreational bloggers/hosters and don’t really understand the importance of reliable hosting.
If you host more than 10-15 sites with Dreamhost you will become very familiar with outages because your domain names will be strung across many different servers and not just one, therefore you will get a full taste of what downtime really means.
Time to log into SSH and start compressing my files and moving again…

It’s incredible ! My site is having BIG problems since 4 days ago. I contacted support and they gave me some irrelevant answers. I am losing money and clients. They don’t care.
At first I was satisfied with dreamhost services, but now, I am totally disappointed. My site was working perfect until those big problems occurred (a few days ago). Until then, my site gives almost all the time 503 errors. The images are not loading, and some of the pages also. Sexyme.ro is so slow ! If I would hosted the site on my own home server it would be faster than it is right now.
Totally disappointed !
December 17th, 2006 at 1:52 pm
Holly shit after finally getting my site in the fark homepage i get this 503 error, what the hell is wrong with you Dreamhost?!!
December 17th, 2006 at 3:01 pm
Allen, have you checked your logs? I have only seen an error like this when some toolbox(es) was(were) trying to crush my server in a distributed manner.
December 17th, 2006 at 3:29 pm
Hey Ben, what kind of toolboxes are you talking about? and which logs should i check?
Will you please email me at heatmaster[AT]gmail[DOT]com and provide more support?

December 17th, 2006 at 3:38 pm
I just checked my error log on the site that’s down, here’s what i got:
Premature end of script headers: php.cgi
What does this mean?

Server not found
Firefox can’t find the server at http://www.psycrotic.com.
* Check the address for typing errors such as
ww.example.com instead of
http://www.example.com
* If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer’s network
connection.
* If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure
that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.
Is what I’m getting for my domain http://www.psycrotic.com (It also has nothing to do with my domain registration since my domain holder has promised to keep it for a few days).

Check your settings - you may have lost your DNS somehow.

hmmm.. well until I found the time to read these posts, I felt issolated in my whoa. It doesn’t make me feel better knowing so many are suffering the same, just more frustrated that the ’support’ are BSing so many people.
I have been told on numerous occasions, ‘all is fine here, must be your end’ or such as ‘it must be your html coding that has changed’ or ‘we have checked the link to your test page, and it all runs fine from here, maybe you need to reduce your images so they download faster’. Well according to my bandwidth checker, the 1.5tb bandwidth is either being shared with the entire population of India, or they have swapped their connection to the server, with an old fax modem!
All this sort of BS does, is create wrath and frustration, subsequently more and more ‘ticked emails’ to the support centre. My business activites, like many posted here, rely on a paid for service. Irrespective of how much you pay, there should not automatically be an opinion ‘you get what you pay for’, unless its totally free. The advertisement in my contract states 99.9% uptime, I assumed that useable uptime, not simply a dribbling tap connection for the past 3 days!
I have several hosting servers all mirrored with the same files, so can ‘although time consuming’ swap the url access to keep my business going to some extent. Beleive it or not, some are cheaper than Dreamhost and have been running flawlessly.
December 19th, 2006 at 8:04 am
Andy, I feel your pain.
I’m getting the same BS from Dreamhost you are. I have a terribly slow website. It’s been fine for months until this weekend.. now it’s been awful for 72 hours.
Dreamhost has claimed everything is “FINE” 4 times now.. and it’s clearly not.. anyone who took 1 minute to check the fix would have been the connection is awful, terribly slow.
My advertisers are up in arms.
I have one piece of advise to anyone reading this. BE CAREFUL.
Dreamhost so far has not resolved the problem, and has been literally terrible about responding. There are 600+ open support tickets.
Let’s see how they respond to this today. I’m going to file a comprehensive BBB report if they do not resolve this morning.

Amazing to read these horror stories, then note in the blog right next to this one that Dreamhost personnel are off partying (last night) while their customers are left screwed, high and dry. Those of you who are leaving Dreamhost because you can’t have your businesses strangled to death or screwed over any further, I hope you’ll return with a final comment here, and let the rest of us know where you’ve chosen to relocate and why. I’ll be interested in seeing what Mike Davidson (www.mikeindustries.com) winds up writing. He already withdrew his recommendation of Dreamhost for quite a while earlier this year, and had only recently reinstated it. I know a lot of people listen to what Mike has to say (as the founder of NewsVine, this guy has serious credibility and a very broad following). If Mike ever were to leave Dreamhost and write up a full explanation why, I suspect there would be a very large exodus of Dreamhost customers. Dreamhost, if you’re reading this, surely you must know that you’ve got to make a major course change here, not just a minor adjustment, and that you’re badly in need of a fall-on-the-sword, full and unconditional mea culpa. Surely you must know this is not sustainable and that you WILL wind up blowing up your business if you don’t change.

Stupid HTML-stripping.
LOOSE == NOT TIGHT
LOSE == MISPLACE, DECREASE
LOSING IS A WORD.
LOOSING IS *NOT* A WORD.
I’m always amazed when people who use an International programme through the wonders of technology, suddenly present themselves, with such ignorance to the rest of the world. Checking someone else’s spelling, on an open forum, has to be the worst form, epecially when there own lack of punctuation is so poor.
Perhaps snewp should have posted in his own native language and left you to decipher his comments for yourself, instead he chose to share in our native language, showing just how enept we in the western world truly are. ‘We’ have an expectation of others to adopt ‘our’ language.

Why do you people that really need your web sites up bother with dirt cheap web hosting. There are a lot of very fast, stable, and helpful companies out there, and instead you still feed dreamhost and then bitch when things don’t work day in and day out. Just makes no sense. I watched people today spend $12 on two large, 2 extra shot mochas from a local coffee shop, and you guys are expecting world class uptime for $8/month? Get real.

Thanks you dreamhost for the great work done. Dreamhost Rocks!
