Server Moves!
In our continued effort to localize clusters phyiscally, the following servers will be moved ‘home’ (home being down the hall).
dali, dollar, gap, io, kiki, limbo-postal, lira, medina, mounds, nutrageous, orbital, ord, rhod, rockyroad, ruble, selma, sepulveda, slash, spree, squirm, ultima, xenotime, and yerba
There will also be a few mail servers being moved from the spunky cluster. Since all of the mail servers are behind a load balancer, mail service should not be affected.
The servers will be moved in three batches starting with the mail servers, followed by two batches from the list above.
Estimated downtime for each server is right around 20 minutes. Check this space for updates!
- UPDATE Wed Dec 20 02:40:34 PST 2006 -
All servers have been moved and are back up and running! If you are having any problems at all with any of the above servers, please contact support.

It would be nice if you fixed outsanding problems BEFORE starting a new task. My site has been down for over 36 hours now!
December 20th, 2006 at 6:39 am
Funny how my site never gets these downtimes like that. I wonder how much DH’s competitors are paying…
December 20th, 2006 at 8:04 am
I do not understand peoples downtimes and compalints. I had 1 outage, due to a mysql server failure, thus I could put up a message in HTML. The outage lasted 1 and a half hours. I think that is reasonable for the problem that happened.

I’ve been very “lucky” as well Zen. My sites on Dreamhost have been quite solid after all.
December 20th, 2006 at 9:01 am
I’ve been using DH for a few months now and I’ve had a great experience. I ran my own server for a few years and switched to DH because I needed more reliability. I had a few times when my server died at 2am and I ended up having a late night. People should try it for a while before complaining so much.
I’m sure I’ll have my outages at some point and I’ll complain but it won’t be in this venue.
Great Job DH.

Paulo, you sound like you were in the need of a managed dedi, which costs quite a lot more if you want to obtain quality support with quick response times.
Dreamhost is a very good alternative when looking for a shared hosting solution with quite a lot of muscle. (especially for the price)
December 20th, 2006 at 9:09 am
you know, for the few people complaining here there are several thousand happy customers who don’t say a word because it works.
December 20th, 2006 at 9:27 am
Well,I have been on DH for over 4months,but I find that recently my site is just keeping either very slow or down.
December 20th, 2006 at 10:00 am
Hello,
I don’t know if it is related to server moves, but I cannot access the SMTP server anymore for
a while now. My last successful mail send was on 19th, 16:45, and we are on 21th, 02:00, (GMT+9).
And I am not paid by DreamHost’s competitors.

Your site works but there is nothing on it
December 20th, 2006 at 12:12 pm
I’ve been with dreamhost for over a year now, and I have had very few issues. And never any downtime over a few hours.
A few months ago when everyone else was complaining about unreachable servers, I started monitoring my site from my offsite VPS. So now I have some nice pretty graphs that show little to no disruption of service (a few minor latency spikes here and there). Maybe I should monitor all of DH’s servers this way. It would be sort of a DH Community “This server is currently unreachable” site.

@Eric
Your site loads but you have to set your paths correctly. Your page refers to: http://localhost/aroundme/error.php...
http://www.banquetbuzz.com/aroundme/ shows the parentdir, but empty. So your server works fine, you have to check your code.
December 20th, 2006 at 12:33 pm
@Eric again
your files at http://www.banquetbuzz.com/template/barnraiser_01 aren’t accessible bacause of the ‘localhost’ path!

Pascal - David - Sandrine -
To dreamhost staff this is a “WRITE ONLY” system. They do not (normally) read here.
Posting here will not fix your problem but will make you feel like you’ve done something.
Submit a support request through the panel. That’s what it is for.
This is not for reporting outages.
Zeke - http://www.dreamhoststatus.com is working for me. And it appears that your PC was working. Now when you talk about my kids. You’re right, they aren’t working. DH can’t help with that.
December 21st, 2006 at 1:14 am
It’s funny how Eric can show up as the first post, be a total dick-hole, but then when the “problem” is resolved, he’s silent.
On Eric’s behalf, “I’m sorry. Thanks, Dreamhost!”
December 21st, 2006 at 7:19 am
sad thing about Eric’s case is that it took me like 5 seconds to see that error, he lost 36+ hours of uptime and bitched at DH due to his own misconfiguration. I saw his site coming back up after posting the localhost error here. Funny how bitching is way easier than saying ‘whoops, my bad’…
