Timed execution going offline for 2 hours for Looney (And Postal!) (all done!)
Tonight around 6pm We will be turning off timed execution (cron) on Looney and Postal. We need to move where we store your crontab files, and the best way to do this is to simply turn off cron while we do it. 2 hours should be WAY overkill. Your crontabs will not catch up, and will either need to be run by hand or just wait for the next time!
Affected servers:
apok axl balrog blanka brazil charm curly dhalsim dozer egon guile limbo-looney moe neo ryu slappy soy tank tofu trinity vega venkman winston zangief zuul
Sorry for the late update. I completely forgot the postal crontabs were stored on the same server until I started looking at it just now.
More servers:

As of about 7:15 Pacific everything should be back online relating to crontabs. Let us know if you are having any problems with them!

See, *this* is the sort of thing that no other hosting company would *dream* of actually telling their customers about. Kudos.

Yeah…
But I do like the fact they do. It is a major change on many of the servers though.

Well that’s why this is *Dream*Host
Kudos indeed.

What exactly is a crontab? Cron?
Timed execution?
And most of all, is the server “Egon” a reference to Egon Schiele?

I am new to crontab, but here is a wiki for it.

I use it to run a cron job for my web page stats.

Egon is a reference to Ghostbusters.
Dan - you’ve cursed lemonhead now. That’s why I never say my server names. EVER. It’s like Beetlejuice that way.

Indeed, I mean, I feel lucky that rockstar never has any problems.

Why doesn’t dreamhost send their users email when they do something critical, like turning off services. I think it isn’t enought to post it here. At least I don’t check on this webpage that often.

As said before, most hosts wouldn’t even bother telling you about this. I was with a webhost which was so… well I can’t say that here, but, let’s just say they were so bad that they just turned things off without even letting you know.
At least DH posts here so we Web2.0 users can subscribe to the blog.

We have too many customers to reliably use email for notifications. We used to do that and had to stop.
It’s much faster and more efficient for everyone for us to post the information in one place like this.
