Gradius memory bad - replacing now!
It looks like the memory on the web server Gradius has gone bad - reboots are not helping and the console messages indicate that this is the problem. We are taking it down to get that replaced and will have it up as quickly as possible (hopefully no more than 15-20 minutes).
Update: the machine is back up and starting all of its services, we’ll keep an eye on it to make sure all is well now.

What about nash? Is the nash server down? I still can’t access any of my websites.
December 21st, 2006 at 4:34 pm
*sigh* another outage… get your act together dreamhost.
December 21st, 2006 at 4:58 pm
I get the impression that steve thinks that computers never fail … I think its impressive that dreamhost lets us know about the failings, and takes action to fix things, in usually a very prompt manner …
December 21st, 2006 at 5:14 pm
Dreamhost is GREAT BUT there has been an increasing umber of ocassions when my server is down. It’s been down for at least five hours for this last downtime….
December 21st, 2006 at 5:43 pm
Just wondering–is there no backup server for the files to be served from when one goes down?
December 21st, 2006 at 7:36 pm
You should know better, Dreamhost! You should always use the Force field when flying the Vic Viper, or messes like this are bound to happen.
December 21st, 2006 at 8:53 pm
Seyora - at 8$ a month it’s impressive there is ONE server.
December 21st, 2006 at 10:34 pm
Silly dreamhost. Everyone knows you should get two speed powerups first, then go straight for the lasers. What do you think this is, GALAGA?? C’MON!!
December 21st, 2006 at 11:40 pm
@jason: as of 12/22 1:40am EST your site loads fine.
December 22nd, 2006 at 3:03 am
Our website is still down. Can this be checked please.
December 22nd, 2006 at 3:04 am
http://www.australiasevereweather.com is still down evening 9:04pm Eastern Australian time.
December 22nd, 2006 at 3:58 am
Jimmy I can see your site fine
December 22nd, 2006 at 6:50 am
REMEMBER - this is NOT where you report outages to DH staff. All we can do is maybe look to see if your site is up.
Submit your request through the panel and consider using a free monitoring service. This will allow you to give DH staff detailed information about any outages/issues.

The amount of whining here is amazing. Dreamhost runs (according to them) over 700 servers. In this case, _one_ server had a problem. Statistically that’s pretty much guaranteed to happen. They replaced the faulty components within half and hour, and the machine back up soon after. I’ve seen IT departments with a _MUCH_ higher person-to-machine ratio (as in 1 to 1) with higher downtimes.
Dreamhost staff: you guys do a damn good job, especially considering that this is shared hosting. Keep it up, and ignore the idiots.
Whining people: quit bitching. This isn’t dedicated hosting — outages happen. Unlike a colo, you don’t have to do anything when components fail. Just sit back, stop checking your own blog every 15 minutes, and wait for Dreamhost to fix the problem.

Hmm…..the panel interface appears to be down currently…..or is it just me?
December 22nd, 2006 at 10:39 am
Andre: That count is a little old actually.
We’re up over 1200 now according to the database query I just ran.
And what the heck is up with all of this downtime! Sheesh DreamHost!
December 22nd, 2006 at 11:44 am
The fact that Dreamhost tells us I find very cool because I would rather know and see how fast its fixed then never know and it randomly affect me. My last host was a total piece of goat crap and they never told us anything that was happening and when my sites went down 5 hours was NOTHING to bitch about. Infact the last time before I moved my sites went down for….wait for it….wait for it…. FIVE DAYS!!! So just chill and it will be fixed…also dont ask for support here anyway…they say not to do that…send them a trouble ticket or email their support team.

I am not in the habit of providing negative feedback. My main concern is to help get our website working properly. You suggest our website works - we are intermittently getting “Service Temporarily Unavailable
The server is temporarily unable to service your request due to maintenance downtime or capacity problems. Please try again later.”
http://www.australiasevereweather.com.au/australian_storm_chasing.html doesn’t load properly
also random pictures go missing can someone please look into it.
Thanks.
Jimmy

Jimmy
Again, your website works fine for me including the URL you posted.
If you’re having intermittent problems you might want to file a support request.
December 22nd, 2006 at 1:20 pm
Actually, just tried again and you’re right about some missing images. Still think you need to file a support request if you want someone to look into it

I just wanted to say I loved how the voice said OPTION. I think that should be dubbed into football games’ play-by-play; it can only add to the experience. Favre drops back, OPTION…
Anyway, thanks for letting us know that you’re fixing the problem. When you buy some more servers, I suggest naming them after Arrested Development characters.

Does anyone know if there’s a suggestions forum for Dreamhost? ‘Cos here’s one: I reckon it would be good to have an automated “duration” showing for these problems and outages. Often DH fix them damn quick and we can’t see easily that they did so. It just says “Update: sorted now” or whatever.
BTW I’m with Andre. I was with a silent “everything’s-fine-honest-mate” host before this and it’s hopeless. Now I’m with DH I’ve experienced hardly any difficulties dispite reading about loads of issues here. As Andre says, there’s honest reporting on all problems, even if they’re unlikely to affect your particular site.

Hello, done or not yet?
December 23rd, 2006 at 4:57 am
Joe, you can log suggestions through the web panel. Other customers can then vote on whether or not they support your suggestion and Dreamhost aim to implement the most popular. Just another DH feature I’ve not seen with my previous hosting companies.
December 23rd, 2006 at 12:46 pm
Hey, you do know that there’s a whole forum dedicated to DH customers. Now it’s ALSO is not an official place to get DH help, but they do show up and do read on occasion.
Check it out at http://discussion.dreamhost.com
Funny, there’s a lost less bitchin’ there.
Matt - Recommendation - don’t drink and post. You’re the only one that hears the voices in your head so having conversations with them in pubic is just a bit freaky.
December 23rd, 2006 at 5:41 pm
“…conversations with them in pubic”?
What a rather unfortunate Freudian slip to make, especially when berating others for the content of their posts…
December 23rd, 2006 at 7:21 pm
At least he has friends.
December 24th, 2006 at 8:00 pm
Wow. I just realized that I was missing the “l” there.
December 26th, 2006 at 2:20 pm
Bah, common misconception is to go for the lasers first. What you really want to do is get two speeds, then get as many options as you can. Lasers are nice and all, but having 4x machine guns hurts like hell. Then, go for the lasers. Now you’re cooking with the good fire;)
But in all seriousness, I find the total amount of downtimes of late has decreased significantly from when I started. And I still can’t complain much for the price.
December 27th, 2006 at 7:18 am
Lasers are always a better choice. The only concern then is power. With machine guns you have to worry about ammunition.
Of course tearing apart your enemies with hot lead is a lot more satisfying than cauterized wounds and looks better on camera.

why does on my account say that “Your account is curently disabled” ?
October 25th, 2007 at 10:32 pm
Thanks you dreamhost for the great work done. Dreamhost Rocks!
