Did you check that nothing heavy was sitting on the internet cable?
Internet needs space for max bandwidth potential.
January 13th, 2007 at 12:07 am
^ Yeah, don’t forget: The Internet is not a big truck. You can’t just set heavy things on it.
Seriously, though, lousy timing… RIGHT when I was about to use our new package for the first time.

My sites on Lemonhead are down it seems.
January 13th, 2007 at 1:04 am
My sites are also on Lemonhead and are ALL down. Somebody please push de PANIC button!
January 13th, 2007 at 7:46 am
File a support ticket then.
January 13th, 2007 at 8:19 am
I still can’t get to the control panel and, since I can’t get in, I can’t file a ticket. Any ideas?
January 13th, 2007 at 8:29 am
My sites on Rodeo are down - panel is down and I can’t submit a ticket.
January 13th, 2007 at 10:02 am
My sites on admiralty are down - panel is down as well, so I can’t submit a ticket.
January 13th, 2007 at 11:38 am
Could this also be the reason why the FLV converter won’t work?
January 13th, 2007 at 2:00 pm
I’m still not accessing the wiki:
A database error has occurred
Query: DELETE FROM `wiki_objectcache` WHERE exptime
January 13th, 2007 at 2:08 pm
I cannot access the wiki either. I’m getting a really ugly database error and trace message.
January 13th, 2007 at 5:19 pm
Wiki’s up.
January 13th, 2007 at 6:33 pm
My stats page has not been updated since the 10th. Will this be repaired soon?
January 13th, 2007 at 8:46 pm
file a support ticket or you can email them, if I remember correctly: support@dreamhost.com
don’t ask technical or support questions in these comments.
January 13th, 2007 at 9:15 pm
What good is this place then if all you get is “file a ticket”. Ever heard of a phone line? Not exactly web2.0, but it is CustomerService2.0.
DreamHost SUCKS!
January 13th, 2007 at 10:34 pm
My sites on Lemonhead are back up, but at the time I couldn’t get into the admin panel, so posting here was just a way to find out if this was only me or if other users were having the same problem.
January 13th, 2007 at 10:46 pm
Access - Get a life. You know/knew how to handle these things when you signed up.
Trust me, if you’re an a-hole, 7.95 a month isn’t enough to put up with you on the phone.
January 14th, 2007 at 8:02 am
I can’t reach to my database via phpmyadmin foR hours. What’s the problem?
January 14th, 2007 at 8:40 am
I still don’t have my database. You said you were working on it.
January 14th, 2007 at 8:45 am
Tolga & Cheryl - This is *NOT* a place to reach Dreamhost staff. We’re just customers (and people with morbid facinations for down hardware). The ONLY place to get your databases repaired is through DreamHost support.
Complaining here does NOT get it repaired faster at all.

Real intelligent response there why. Instead of holding a company accountable, you insult the consumer. I didnt set the price. If I knew it was going to take that long, I would have used another hosting company. They are client blogs, so the price to value isnt a big deal, but my time is.
With a phone, or at least something on the site that explained upfront what I should expect, I could have avoided this altogether or a least known and planned accordingly. Additionally, they wouldn’t have to put up with my complaining. It’s a small, yet competitive world, so less than great PR isnt a great thing, especially when you need volume to be profitable.

Access - I regret you saw my response as an insult. Many customers, especially new ones, try to use this to report outages despite all the warnings..
If you look through this site, you will know that I have been a HUGE advocate of DH letting customers know what’s going on. It’s incidents like this one that don’t get reported here that really bother me. If it’s an outage, it’s an outage - REPORT IT, DH. If it’s something the customer’s done, then maybe DH can keep it quiet to avoid embarassing the customer.
One concern is that people see as a place to report outages. It’s not.that you aren’t seeing a problem that should be fixed. It’s that DH staff does not look here to find problems to fix. Some people report problems here before reporting them to support thinking that it will be fixed. Reporting them here in public before giving support a chance to fix it, isn’t terribly fair. It’s like telling everyone at a party that a guys fly is down without having the decency to tell him!
PR good or bad is all good. As many famous people have said, “Better to have people talking badly about you than not at all.” DH does a great job of letting people do their talking and trying to do a decent job while not going mad. When you “manage” the conversation too much people lose trust. (Although having your DB down for hours is certainly a trust breaking proposition).
I do apologize that you saw my statement as an insult. I do hold my providers accountable - first in private. And you may have done so,but failed to share that you’d given them ample opportunity to respond.
I am sorry it’s not working for you. I hope it gets working soon. If it’s really serious submit with a higher priority and hopefully they’ll get it fixed faster for you.
P.S. These kinds of conversations are GREAT to have on the forums as others can sometimes help diagnose the issues. http://discussion.dreamhost.com

ttancm - I think we ought to ask DH for an approved alternative way to submit support requests when the panel is down or otherwise not functioning properly. Or maybe confirm from them that there is an approved alternate way to submit requests.
January 14th, 2007 at 5:58 pm
It would be nice.
As it is now I just respond to old support tickets with new problems if I can’t get in the panel. If you don’t have a support ticket number in the subject line the email gets returned…=P
January 15th, 2007 at 1:26 pm
Access, you make the other whiners here seem smart. If you sign up for a host that doesn’t offer phone support, just to whine about lack of phone support, then you’re an idiot.
Switch hosts or submit a ticket. Anyone with 3 active brain cells could have figured that out.
It’s funny that the ones that post here instead of submitting a ticket are the ones that also seem to have the most problems, which shows that life is much harder when you’re stupid.
January 15th, 2007 at 3:13 pm
Maybe everyone should just switch to jumpline.net… They know service, both on the phone and by email (or support tickets)
And for everyone that isn’t paying attention, access can’t access his panel to submit a support ticket. Pay Attention.
I have never had trouble with my host at jumpline like this, and certainly never been attacked by staff.
January 15th, 2007 at 11:33 pm
Right Bob — how long have you worked for them?
The panel is never down for long, and when it is, they already know because they use it too. So you wait until it comes back up and submit a ticket. Again, anyone that needs phone support and signs up with a host that doesn’t offer it anyway is a brain-dead imbecile.
And anyone that that spams a competitor on Dreamhost’s site is a worthless scumbag, regardless of how you feel about them.
I’d avoid jumpline or anyone else that spams here.
January 15th, 2007 at 11:39 pm
OMG… I am having NO luck…
Just transfered on a referal as my last two hosts were useless.
I hope this is not a sign of things to come ???
I just want to get my sit transferred and back up….
January 16th, 2007 at 10:29 am
My site is down intermittently. I know you guys have a lot on your hands, but this is getting ridiculous. My site (rpheath.com) is down about 80% of the time, and the only hope I have is if I go into the panel (which isn’t always working) and click on “Change fully hosted settings now”.
Can you tell me what’s going on here??? Or better yet, how to fix it???
January 18th, 2007 at 1:59 pm
Um, you’re at a bargain basement hosting company. Don’t expect stellar reliability, or anything more than email/ticketed support. That’s what you get for $8 - $20 a month.
We’re almost finished transitioning to a new company (for a lot more money and a dedicated server), and if you want reliability and a more robust network, that’s what you need to do. Just don’t expect to pay $8 for it.
It’s a shame DH decided to become a bargain basement hosting company (they weren’t 4 years ago), but I can understand it from a business perspective.

*sigh*, I’m pretty tired of guys using the comments section here to advertise their company’s. Seriously, guys, this is not what this section is for. And people that keep adding their complaints here – sometimes even going on about something totally related – are really a pain. I don’t work for dreamhost, and neither does anyone here. Whoever mentioned ‘getting attacked by the staff’ here has no idea that the staff do not talk here in the comments section. Obviously, these people can’t read what it says here – this is not a way to contact dreamhost. I bet these other companies don’t even allow people to leave comments in places like this.

Nice work dreamhost! Great Hosting!
January 14th, 2008 at 5:06 am
You’re worth waiting. I’ll be right here waiting for everything to turn out fine. I hope, errors like this, will not occur again in the future.
