Hill users moving day!
In about a half an hour we will be moving everyone on the server hill to the server “granola.” The reason why we are doing this is because the host name has been under attack and the only way to give everyone relief is to change their host! We apologize for this inconvenience, but the move shouldn’t take that long, an hour at most, and it should be very seamless. Nobody should notice any gaps in service.
UPDATE: We’re being a lot more careful with moving everyone than originally planned, since we thought caution being a better way to handle it. This move will be completed within two hours.

Hi guys, seems like the cupcake MySQL server is down, too.
January 12th, 2007 at 2:58 pm
Well…as far as I can tell it’s still out…so yeah it’s interrupted our service.
January 12th, 2007 at 4:44 pm
Yep, we’re down too. Have been for hours.

Ya know, I am really tired of all crying I see on here. OMG your server is down, get over it. You know if you feel you could do better, I am sure you would already been on your own servers with your own OC3. Simple thing is you know you can’t do any better than DH, this is why you are here. DUH!
Now in all reality, I have been with DH Since 2003 and I honesty could not count the times my sites have been down; and I know I am on some of the oldest servers they have. I know this becuse I have not changed servers in the last 4 years.
You need to really stop crying and let the PROFESSIONALS do their job, and show some thanks and support.

Sure i am crying out loud, but DH goes down very often! The reason i am here is ‘cuz of the space they offer. I have some other clients on another hosting, they do go down but kinda rare. For the past couple of months my site has been down several times, dats not including the ones i dont know of! I am new to DH, i am not very impress by that, however, service and space is great.

I love how you say the “service” is great when here you are complaining about it. Instead of being whatever shared server you’re on, invest in your website and get a dedicated box. If that box knows down, it’s your own fault because it’s your box. If you don’t like downtime, get off your shared server. Simple as that.

well, for the price, this is the best you can get ^^
Find me another host that offers as much space and bandwidth if you can then ^^ !!
You get what you pay for ^^
I used to use …. what was that, i forgot, but their service was way worse, and i had to pay more ($19.99/month)
Since i found DH, i have been keeping positive balance in my account ^^

I am sick of people jumping in to defend Dream Host. I love their service but they do occasionally mess up, and when they do then people have a right to complain.
Also 1and1.com offer similar prices, but I chose dream host.

well, isnt it true that, you complain about the service, but you still stick with it because you know you get worse service from other places ?

I am new to DreamHost. It is taking forever (in Internet time) to get anything done. Now I discover it may take me 1 BUSINESS day to get an account setup to the point that I can get a site up. That is ridiculus in this day and age. Before some of you flame me for bitching, I have several hosting accounts at various hosting companies, plus my own colo, so I have a clue about how easy this should be. Unless a company tells me up front that because I’m not paying much that I am going to get crappy service, then I don’t expect to get crappy service.
The upside of this is that now I get to test out how easy it is to get a charge reversed with Google Checkout. No excuse for this!

I have been on DreamHost for a week now and my site is not available. I asked my developer and the static IP is pulling up half the site and there is a “Service Temporary Unavailable” when you try and visit my domain name. Does anyone else have this problem? I”m not sure if this is related to the server move.
Thanks,
j

At least DH tells you what is going on and responds to outages as quickly as they can. No-one has a crystal ball and there is no way to prepare for every possible hardware failure.
I suppose DH could buy a nationwide cable company and their own power plant and distribution grid. That way, there would be no communication or power failures, UNTIL someone runs into a telephone pole with their ego-massaging Hummer or Escalade. Then some customers will raise hell because DH doesn’t have a utility truck standing by to replace the pole.
Having said that, I’d bet that DH WOULD buy all of those things if all of their customers paid about $1500 a month.
When I used 1 and 1, they had a rediculous amount of downtime and were unresponsive (probably overwhelmed) when it went down. I’d rather have a TRIBBS bulletin board system running on an old 486 at my house than pay 1 and 1 for the crap they call service.

@Jryan:- It might be helpful if you completed the section of the post that says “Website” this way other users like myself can possibly inform you why it might be down, or whether it is even down. It could also possibly be your ISP…

I always thought Hill was such a boring server name. Granola is way cooler. Thanks!

I’ve been with DH for sometime now and the only reason I’m still here is because it just seems difficult to make a move and the fear about the next host.
The fact is that my website has gone down so many times its incredible. Two hours means a lot of money to a lot of people who make their living off the web.
DH downtime is ridiculously silly. I would never recommend them to anyone.

People do have a right to complain here, and Dreamhost has actually been so kind to provide a facility where they can openly complain. I bet other companies don’t allow people to leave comments like the ones we often see here at a forum like this one. They probably would censor anything and everything. DH have some serious character for letting people openly complain here.
While all have a right to complain, some of the complaints are silly or they are support issues that have no place here. That’s when it gets irritating and people jump in defending DH.

Good luck on the transfer! It seems like the transfer was really necessary.
