Load issues on webmail machines
We are experiencing load spikes on some of our webmail servers. We still have others to handle the webmail flow, but this problem may cause intermittent slowness and/or inaccessibility.
The admins are working on it, and it should be fixed soon. Please check back for updates.
Very sorry about the inconvenience!

January 18th, 2007 at 12:20 pm
SMTP/POP servers seem to be down as well.
January 18th, 2007 at 12:22 pm
Yeah I’m unable to download email using Thunderbird
January 18th, 2007 at 12:22 pm
Yep, can’t ping my pop3 server either.
January 18th, 2007 at 12:23 pm
Hmmm, I can’t send email via SMTP either. Connected?
January 18th, 2007 at 12:23 pm
Yup. I am experiencing this.
No access to email.
January 18th, 2007 at 12:23 pm
Ditto from NYC.
January 18th, 2007 at 12:24 pm
Webmail error says unable to connect to IMAP.
January 18th, 2007 at 12:24 pm
I’m only trying webmail cause my regular POP mail isn’t working (as of 5 minutes ago)
Webmail is also giving a connection failure.
January 18th, 2007 at 12:24 pm
*sigh*
January 18th, 2007 at 12:25 pm
Yeah, I wondered if the webmail spikes might have been people who couldn’t get imap/pop to work.
January 18th, 2007 at 12:25 pm
Once again Dreamhost continues to fail us all. Can’t send or receive emails. This better be resolved soon!
January 18th, 2007 at 12:25 pm
Me too. Can’t get emails, nor can any of my clients.
Once again, using Dreamhost is making me look pretty bad.
January 18th, 2007 at 12:25 pm
yep email down. ftp down.
January 18th, 2007 at 12:27 pm
email down
January 18th, 2007 at 12:27 pm
Its funny that their blog and their own website, dreamhost.com, never has any problems. I want to be on which ever server the blog is on!
January 18th, 2007 at 12:27 pm
nevermind ftp working.
January 18th, 2007 at 12:28 pm
This is the final straw. I am starting the necessary steps to bring email in-house.
January 18th, 2007 at 12:29 pm
LOL @ Kmac, good point. Where is it hosted exactly?
IMAP SMTP DOWN
January 18th, 2007 at 12:29 pm
Ditto in SF. This happens way too often guys. Are you a hosting company, or a bunch of rookies?
January 18th, 2007 at 12:30 pm
Getting access issues as well. SSH to [ssh machine] seems to be failing also.
On a related note, I got prompted for my password on [shell acct] twice, the second one was my login@[machinename]. Hoping this is normal and not some freaky man-in-the-middle attack.
January 18th, 2007 at 12:31 pm
the one time I want to use webmail and it’s down, go figure.
January 18th, 2007 at 12:32 pm
Just one problem after another with this company
January 18th, 2007 at 12:32 pm
As others have said, it’s not just webmail. My IMAP is invisible to me right now.
Let’s get it together here, folks. A little stability never hurt.
January 18th, 2007 at 12:33 pm
I’ve switched everything but email over to a new host… since then, I’ve never had to complain about FTP, site down, internal server errors, etc. ever again. I am finally dreaming!!! HAHAHA. I can’t wait to switch them email over now.
January 18th, 2007 at 12:33 pm
I can’t seem to send through my own smtp, nor can I get in through webmail.
January 18th, 2007 at 12:34 pm
Same here. Clients getting bounced emails from me looks really good. Starting to regret switching to Dreamhost… more like nightmarehost.
January 18th, 2007 at 12:34 pm
Speaking as a sysadmin myself - something will break over time… Being this my 2nd “cant get no email” situation with dreamhost since 1999, give them a break.. When typing this, the post is 13 minutes old so if it remains down for several hours then yes - you could have a point, but 13 minutes ? (voice of 2000 mailboxes admin speaking) If you want a message to arrive use registered snailmail, not email
January 18th, 2007 at 12:36 pm
My mail servers just started responding to pings…
are we back?
January 18th, 2007 at 12:36 pm
this seems to be happening WAY too often … time for new host anyone?
January 18th, 2007 at 12:36 pm
ITS WORKING AGAIN!!!!!!!! W00T
January 18th, 2007 at 12:37 pm
ahahah i just realized there was like 15min of downtime and people were having fits, (not me though)
January 18th, 2007 at 12:39 pm
FRaNKy this is the second “can’t get email” situtation some of us have had in two days. You must be one of the lucky ones on those magic servers… I’ve been having issues for months.
January 18th, 2007 at 12:40 pm
looks like it’s working again!
BTW this is the first email outage i’ve noticed. in 2 years. only down for 20 minutes, which isn’t too shabby.
But what’s up with all the naysayers? If you want to leave then just leave. Nobody’s stopping you.
January 18th, 2007 at 12:41 pm
This is really the first “down” I’ve ever had with my account…
I’ve only had one or two on other accounts. Really though I must have a magic account.
January 18th, 2007 at 12:41 pm
so how long you been with these guys, Mr. “not me” Red? … just curious.
January 18th, 2007 at 12:43 pm
bad bad bad bad bad- they suck!!!!
January 18th, 2007 at 12:44 pm
if you’re so convinced that they suck, why not switch? everyones’ expectations of a host vary, so if you need a rock solid, concrete host for business (or whatever), then don’t scrape the bottom of the price barrel and pay up for a better service.
my mail is working again.
January 18th, 2007 at 12:45 pm
Mine was out for 20 minutes. It’s fine now.
January 18th, 2007 at 12:55 pm
Slow access has been a problem for me for days and this was the final actual crash. I think this was coming for a while. I really hope they can fix the slow access problem as well because I’m very disappointed with Dreamhost.
January 18th, 2007 at 12:58 pm
This is more than the second time since 1999 that this has gone down. At the least this is the third time in the past month. Unacceptable.
January 18th, 2007 at 12:58 pm
It´s running again, but I´ve received bouncing complaints from clients during two last weeks
January 18th, 2007 at 1:03 pm
I have been with dreamhost for 4 years. I have seen some email downtime in that time, although nothing to whine about…I got caught up on the blog and discussion’s whilst it was just down. I have to tell you though, I have two clients on the expensive-hosting-email-somewhere-else at $80 month, funny, they have been down more than dreamhost. I don’t think any provider is impervious to failures or outages these days. At least dreamhost got to it quickly and I would like to thank them.
Thanks Dreamhost
Your Now Can Email Again Customer
January 18th, 2007 at 2:06 pm
i’ve been with dreamhost for 8 years
they were great until 2004. then a bunch of their most talented people left, and they started growing like crazy.
they never replaced the talent that ran the systems, and they grew too much
now i get 12-36hours of total downtime on email 3x a year, and some minor bug or another every few months.
its sad. its annoying. its the last straw.
January 18th, 2007 at 2:56 pm
I’m willing to bet that 9/10 that say it’s the “final straw” stay with dreamhost.
Anyone taking?
January 18th, 2007 at 3:08 pm
Load is back to normal on all webmail machines and they should be functioning properly again.
January 18th, 2007 at 4:14 pm
COMPUTERS GO WRONG SOMETIMES!!
Do something more productive with your lives rather than complaining… such as inventing a computer which never goes wrong.
Jeez
January 18th, 2007 at 4:26 pm
As Barbara mentioned, I too have been on the $80 a month ISP and hosting service. But when the email stopped working with them, our only resource was to call tech support. After being on hold for 10-15 minutes, they insisted on walking us through all of our server settings in the email client [Outlook or OE] before “escalating the problem to Level 3″. Then level 3 would respond that they were having “server” problems.
I think DH’s willingness and openess to posting their problems on the DH Status page is commendable. How many other businesses that you deal with every day would be willing to post their problems right out front where everyone can see them. When I was looking for a new home for my sites and 250+ email users, I read all these blogs first. It’s one thing to have problems, but better to read about it right here at the source than someone else out there giving you a “bad review” on your service. These blogs are what convinced me to come here.
And let’s ALL remember just how much we’re paying for this monthly service….
(… stop whining… just leave…)
January 18th, 2007 at 4:35 pm
I have a client that is unable to send mail to attglobal.net addresses the IP is showing up as blacklisted
208.97.132.72 –spamcannibal
This is no fun!!!!!!
January 18th, 2007 at 7:21 pm
I was thinking to buy some hosting plans for my friends but its just more than 9 times happened to me on one of my friends website. I am there almost 16/7 (On the forum). Right now I am thinking to move the website hosted here to another server and also, I think, dreamhost will lose some good upcoming customers due to this downtime and if you keep doing so!
PS: Just check the downtime posts on the blog. You will see that only in last months how many errors reports are there. I am sure there were more downtimes! And those who say pay more. Just want to say them what here paid was also wasnt looted money!
January 18th, 2007 at 9:26 pm
It would have been good to have an update to this message indicating that thing have been fixed (if indeed, they have been fixed.)
This is EXACTLY why dreamhoststatus.com isn’t as useful as it could be.
January 18th, 2007 at 11:28 pm
more whining on the dreamhost blog.
January 19th, 2007 at 12:42 am
Did someone call for me?
January 19th, 2007 at 12:55 am
I’m getting this:
Warning: mysql_pconnect() [function.mysql-pconnect]: Can’t connect to MySQL server on ‘192.168.**.**’ (4) in /usr/local/squirrelmail-1.4.9a/session_mysql.php on line 61
# Can’t connect to 192.168.**.** as squirrelmail
# MySQL Error: Can’t connect to MySQL server on ‘192.168.**.**’ (4)
Help?
January 19th, 2007 at 1:01 am
Yep, once again, no access to my emails. Man, these things have just happened too often at dreamhost in the last year…
I really wish the times back when dreamhost was a smaller, but 100% reliable webhost…
Greetings from Zurich, Switzerland
Philip
January 19th, 2007 at 1:04 am
as of 3am EST I still cant access anything … talk about costing monies can’t work on a site which need to go live in three days, and I still have much work to do on it getting it set up!
January 19th, 2007 at 1:11 am
Can’t use webmail, can’t logon from the dreamhost home page and cant contact support : I get this error:
http://www.dreamhost.com/contact.cgi
Software error:
Can’t call method “prepare” on an undefined value at /usr/local/ndn/web/dreamhost5/contact.cgi line 51.
For help, please send mail to the webmaster (support@dreamhost.com), giving this error message and the time and date of the error.
January 19th, 2007 at 1:21 am
My USD 0.02 :
I have just ONE site on dreamhost: frankly the price *was* the deciding factor, because I needed cheap bandwidth for this particular site.
Overall support experience is good, but the fact of the matter is that I have experienced problems 3 times so far. So I remain in ‘wait and watch’ mode. I won’t shift my other domains - and I can state that I have experienced only 1 email outage in 3 years hosting with my current host - but I pay a lot more!
So I guess price = performance.
January 19th, 2007 at 1:25 am

192.168.*.* looks like something is pointing to a wrong IP
\
And yes it has been down quite a few times.
I live their openess… but they do need to get their act together. Some of us are running a business on their service.
January 19th, 2007 at 1:41 am
im in hong kong peak time 4.40pm been down for 2 hours im losing big dollars right now! this is whackness of the highest order
January 19th, 2007 at 1:44 am
It is great that there are some of you who rarely experience down-time with dreamhost. But that does not mean that no one else does. We have had our business and email with DH for over two years, and this past year has not been an impressive one. Lately, we have some type of DH issue with our site and/or our email monthly. This whole week the email has been cripplingly slow. We sent in a message to DH support and were told everything looked fine. Our email is now dead and we cannot respond to our customers. No matter what we pay for our service with DH, we are allowed to voice our frustrations when they repeatedly fail us.
January 19th, 2007 at 2:10 am
After being a DH customer for a 3 moths now, Im starting to hesitate… I was planning on moving my business on DH, but these recent happenings and failures on service have made me think twice. They have been in business for 9 years+. At this rate there will not be birthdays with “round” numbers. My symphaties to all of you whos business is suffering for these recent SODs.
January 19th, 2007 at 6:30 am
I always think email should be a reliable contect address. So I made a script if sending to my domain mail fails, than use my gmail instead. Strange DH has problems with mails since free services like gmail, hotmail, yahoo doesn’t seems to have these issues.
@Tomi, if you had these page you might had readed a lot of people has two servers one page content and the other a DH server as webdump and or mirror. (but it would be a giant mirror :P)
January 19th, 2007 at 7:18 am
I’m amazed by the number of outages reported by users here without SOME form of official update or at least acknolwedgement of an issue. I note that AaronC posted to the comments indicating that the load on the servers (assuming web mail servers) was back to normal, but that probably should have been on the front page.
The not-insignificant number of troubles reported here certainly implies that some other system(s) wasn’t working - except for the guy complaining about not being able to access his local mysql db (192.168.*.* addresses are non-routable so it has to be inside your network or your local proxy’s broken)
January 19th, 2007 at 8:56 am
I moved to DH in October. My site’s been down a couple of times, ftp stops working, and email is spotty. This isn’t good. Last night (January 18th) my site was down, email worked, no http://ftp. Can we please have some updates on the current issues?
January 19th, 2007 at 9:42 am
Someone please tell me their website is messed up now too? It shows that all the FTP files are gone for my site..?? Anyone else??
PS: I Know this has nothing to do with the current topic, but the support people are slow and I Just wanna make sure I am not the only one.
January 19th, 2007 at 10:27 am
Any word on whether Beverly is down?
I haven’t been able to access Web/FTP for the last few hours, but nothing posted here.
January 19th, 2007 at 10:49 am
I still can’t access my email. Any idea when it will be fixed?
January 19th, 2007 at 11:22 am
Beaujes, you need to put in a support ticket, as the problem yesterday more than likely is resolved. Chris and Troy, you both should first go check the support panel and see if others are having the same issue, if not, you need to put in a support ticket.
January 19th, 2007 at 11:26 am
I put in a support ticket, I am just freaking out here b/c my main user is all gone. I didn’t do anything, and noone else has access.
All my other domains/users are fine though..
January 19th, 2007 at 11:33 am

n0mer - looks like you’ve got network issues before it even gets to DH…
January 19th, 2007 at 5:13 pm
Worked fine for me all english day
January 20th, 2007 at 1:51 am
I can’t get into any of my webmails - did it break again?
I have to say that I’ve had very few problems with DH over the years (I joined in Feb 1999). Give them a bit of slack here guys…
DF
January 20th, 2007 at 2:05 am
STET. It is in fact working - the problem was with the WiFi service at the hotel I’m staying in right now.
January 20th, 2007 at 7:58 am
How many people crying. In my case I just use POP3 to solve the mail problems on DH, I decide to move my pop service to Google they give me over 450 accounts I just configure the pop3 and no more problems…
I never like the idea of have all my eggs lie down on the same nest.
Primary DNS DH, Secondary DNS at Every Dns and my email at google
If you only need POP3 take the ggogle advise http://www.google.com/a
January 20th, 2007 at 1:54 pm
Carlos: Glad you’re ok with them storing all your messages forever, and giving them to anyone with a sopena or to everyone accidentally without any liability.
January 20th, 2007 at 2:06 pm
James - You think they still aren’t archived? The only communications that are (currently) safe are the ones in your head. And since 1/2 of those emails are spam, does it really matter a whole lot?
Use encryption and signing. http://www.cacert.org
January 20th, 2007 at 8:44 pm
is the mail service fixed yet? i seem to be getting e-mails just fine….
January 21st, 2007 at 10:53 am
It’s s’posed to take 1 hour to add a new email address to your account. It has been 10 hours now…think this is related?
January 21st, 2007 at 12:16 pm
According to a post here from what appears to be a DH rep, it was fixed at 3:08 on 1/18 (This probably should have been posted on the entry out front rather than mixed into the 80+ messages here).
I’m getting spam again so it must be up.
Tom - 10 hours is too long - report it.
January 21st, 2007 at 3:24 pm
can someone out there add a new email address to their account and let me know how long it takes before it starts working? just as a test.
I have added two new email addresses to my account and neither are working. They both have the same settings as my third (working) email address. On the Manage Email page there are Clock Icons next to the new addresses I created. The first new one I set up was almost 15 hours ago.
Support from DreamHost has not come thru yet so I’m reaching out to you guys for help. Thanks
January 21st, 2007 at 3:32 pm
I’m down again. Arg.
January 21st, 2007 at 6:10 pm
I have been down since 8:30 AM today. Apparently it was fixed about 5 mins ago but I am not up yet. I reported another outage. All day w/o e-mail now.
January 21st, 2007 at 6:33 pm
I’ve had problems like this for quite some time now, however the past few days (time of this report) I’m not having any problems connecting to my webmail server or any lag when connecting. mabye its just not affecting my server this time. normaly when it throws errors like this its a problem with one of the gateway routers getting ready to die.
January 22nd, 2007 at 11:24 am
dreamhost, get it together!
January 23rd, 2007 at 1:04 am
I think its fine now…
January 24th, 2007 at 10:37 am
come on guys. the slowness is unacceptable. this is getting *old* and i am extremely frustrated now. this happens WAY too often. please be honest and let me know if this is what we should expect. if so i will have to go with another company with better service. i am losing money and time… not what i expect from you guys…
January 26th, 2007 at 7:59 pm

January 29th, 2007 at 12:26 pm
Same here. Opened webmail, got the following:
ERROR
Error connecting to IMAP server: mail.lemurreserve.org.
110 : Connection timed out
Go to the login page
Went to Thunderbird, got the “mailserver time out” error.
January 31st, 2007 at 10:43 am
I have to concur with many of you. This service is run by rookies. They mean well I think, but rock solid reliability is not part of Dreamhost. Our businesses are suffering as people are getting bounces constantly. Unacceptable, guys. Crap, now I have to find another hosting company. Sigh.
February 12th, 2007 at 5:52 pm
postalmail-mx3.g.dreamhost.com
My virus scanner is unable to connect, and I’m not being able to check my emails. I recieved this error Why this happened

Nice work dreamhost! Great Hosting!
December 23rd, 2007 at 1:01 am
Yeah I’m unable to download email using Thunderbird
