Hopefully this will clear up the terrible problems this afternoon!
February 5th, 2007 at 7:27 pm
…There’ve been problems?
February 5th, 2007 at 9:20 pm
Your IMAP servers appear to be down. Awesome.
February 5th, 2007 at 9:27 pm
Error connecting to IMAP server: mail.domain.com.
110 : Connection timed out
February 5th, 2007 at 9:32 pm
IMAP problems over here as well ^_^ hopefully this was expected… but not listed… hopefully
February 5th, 2007 at 9:32 pm
Yup, mail server down… 110, Timout while trying to connect.

Surpass hosting has a year for $1. Signed up earlier going to give them a try. Hopefully their email service will be more reliable. I figured the most I have to lose is $1.

Mail, at least, seems to be down. Doesn’t go out or come in (I’m using your SMTP function).
February 5th, 2007 at 9:39 pm
Not just IMAP, POP3 is down as well. Sorta moot trying to send at that point, so can’t say for SMTP. The customer support page verifies the outage as being reported by multiple customers, so hopefully somebody at Dreamhost Central is scurrying to work on fixing it!
According to the support page, it was first reported about 20 min ago, and verified (ie, reported a second time) 11 and a half min ago. Which means that at least some of you didn’t report it via the system-wide outage page, since people were complaining here about it for more than 3 hours (not sure what time the server’s on, but there’s 3 hours worth of complaints on here, which is a lot more than the 20 min it was reported on DH’s support site!)

Okay, I’m a jerk. It was only posted here about 20 min ago, too! I was reading the timestamps on the non-mail related posts. Foot duly inserted in mouth :-1

mail server down?
February 6th, 2007 at 12:38 am
mail here is working fine via IMAP on spunkymail.

I am having problem with my database server (mysql.yinsochen.com) and I cannot report the problem to you via email (system complains about no ticket #) or the panel (obviously it’s down), so I had to try to send against an old case (it appear to went through but complain about cannot add attachment, so I don’t know whether it went through or not). My site right now has a wordpress database error displayed…
When pinging the database directly (either through PhpMyAdmin or mysql commandline) I cannot get through. commandline gives the following error:
ERROR 2013 (HY000): Lost connection to MySQL server during query

UPDATE: As I am writing this comment the database comes back up again. THANKS for resolving the issue quickly, although I have to admit the fact I cannot reach you easily makes my blood pressure goes up
Thanks again.

It’s past 3:15AM EST and the panel should be up by now. Any update on why it isn’t or when we can hope that it will be?
February 6th, 2007 at 1:25 am
I suppose it’s taking them a little longer than they anticipated.
Peace,
Gene
February 6th, 2007 at 1:30 am
You suppose right but we’d like to receive some update!!!
February 6th, 2007 at 1:37 am
The database for my forum also seems to be down - ho hum - they don’t mention that on the panels.dreamhost.com replacement page. The issue of not being to contact them is a also a pain…

Our site http://cdx-thegame.com/ is loading one moment not (connection timed out) the next, it’s just Flash, no back-end databases or scripts. 00:50:13 PST / 08:51 GMT

All our sites and message boards appear to be fully functional.
But maybe the maintenance operation is including more than just the control panel database and related functions.
Peace,
Gene
P.S. The real question is why the hell am I still up at this ungodly hour. I can understand the folks who maintain servers, but all I have to do is write a manual for a tech company and that can wait till morning.
February 6th, 2007 at 2:23 am
I like it the most when I have customer’s expecting certain upgrades the next morning but there are maintenance issues.
Muahaha. I believe the Control Panel is still down at 01:23 PST.
February 6th, 2007 at 2:24 am
Indeed, it should be up now. 10:25 here in Sweden. I need the panel to create a Subversion repository.
February 6th, 2007 at 3:01 am
well, it’s back now.
February 6th, 2007 at 3:08 am
not here it’s not.
I’ve been neglecting my sites for ages and at last overcome procrastination to work on them today. Bad move!
February 6th, 2007 at 3:13 am
Hopefully downtime would be very minimal in the future!
February 6th, 2007 at 7:10 am
What was upgraded exactly?
February 6th, 2007 at 10:20 am
My wiki is still down
February 6th, 2007 at 6:20 pm

Down *is* normal, right? Then they weren’t lying.
Actually, the maintenance was for the control panel database which is not shared with customer’s databases. Any other issue is/was completely independent of the database maintenance. Nothing was upgraded but it sounds like general DB tasks were completed. Possibly archiving old/inactive data, reindexing and ensuring that all the indexes are either necessary or that other indexes need to be added. It is possible also that they exported the DB and reimported it to give a chance for the DB to clean up it’s files hoping to help performance. More than 400,000 domains are managed here so it’s not a trivial DB.
Of course I don’t work for DH, I just hope like hell my sites stay up. Then again, they hope like hell their sites stay up too!

Does anybody have problems with their mail too? I don’t know if my problem has anything to do with the current maintenance, but when I try to log in to my webmail I get a “Unknown user or password incorrect.” warning.
The funny thing is I *am* able to log in to the webmail configuration. So I changed my password there, waited a while, checked my new password in the panel: all good. Tried to log in again: nothing.
I’m pretty sure it isn’t my user name either… that’s just my name.
February 6th, 2007 at 9:21 pm
Nevermind… I tried again with the password they originally provided and that worked. They must have resetted my password then somewhere during the maintenance. Weird.

There is alot of negativity here . . . I have been fully happy with the service . . . yes there are a few issues, but at least you all resolve them as quickly as possible . . .
Is it safe for me to assume the reason for this maintenance is related to the actions being gone in the webpanel?
Thanks for your great service . . . I am fully happy with dreamhost.
February 7th, 2007 at 6:23 am
Hello,
Panel is out now and website is unreachable now, yesterday it was webmail service, what’s happening !
I am not very happy with dreamhost at the moment, I have choose this host thinking it was a good host.
I am from france and trying to reach my site is long sometimes, more than 3-4 seconds to acces to each webpage, may you explain why ?
Thanks and hope all is coming up soon,
Paul

Now panel and website are ok.
Thanks for your effort, it still slow to access my website from France, but I don’t know how you can correct that.

Tiger - Unable to duplicate your panel outage. Works for me. (although we could be hours apart and it’s recovered since then). Your page loaded pretty quickly (maybe two seconds) for me just now, I did notice that you have some external links that *could* have affected the performance. It’s important to remember that the service is SHARED meaning that someone else on your server could have been using CPU and bandwidth at the moments you took your timings. 3-4 seconds, even from Europe isn’t all that bad for 8$ a month. We are talking many stops on a trip halfway ’round the world here.
I have not had any email issues in the last 48 hours.
We really ought to consider changing the domain name of this site to http://www. dreamhostbitchin.com.
Please report issues you are having that ARE NOT SPECIFICALLY IDENTIFIED in postings here to support and feel free to stop by http://discussion.dreamhost.com for customer to customer assistance with issues. It works surprisingly well for many people.

I can not login to the system on 02/06/2007 and 02/027/2009.

Maybe they have multiple servers and some of them are(were) in trouble. Just a guess.
