PHP5 Downgrade Complete/Upgrade Scheduled for 02/19
Posted (February 8th, 2007 at 4:33 pm PST) by jordanThe downgrade has been completed so all sites should be functioning normally at this time. We have re-scheduled the php5 upgrade for February 19th. Here is a list of software that will be affected by this upgrade and steps for you to take to insure that your site is not affected by this upgrade. Note: Any software that was installed via our one click feature in the panel can also be upgraded by going to the One Click Section in the Goodies tab of your panel https://panel.dreamhost.com/index.cgi?tree=goodies.installer&
- Wordpress versions under 2.1
Any version of wordpress under 2.1 will have problems after the upgrade to php 5.2 , the latest version can be downloaded at:
http://wordpress.org/latest.zip
Information on how to upgrade can be found here:
http://codex.wordpress.org/Upgrading_WordPress
Another fix is to change your site to use PHP version 4 in the Dreamhost Panel, but it is generally best to upgrade to avoid security risks.
- MediaWiki versions under 1.9.2
Any version of MediaWiki under version 1.9.2 will have problems with PHP 5.2. For information on upgrading please see http://www.mediawiki.org.
- Drupal
For detailed information on how to fix and upgrade Drupal please see http://drupal.org/node/102114 and http://drupal.org/node/92802
- Zencart versions under 1.3.7
Any version under 1.3.7 will require an upgrade. Info on upgrades can be found here http://www.zencart.com/
We apologize for the inconvenience.

The Drupal link you included suggests that if you are running the latest Drupal 4.7.x or 5.x then you will be unaffected by the PHP upgrade. Is that your understanding?
Your downgrade wasn’t as complete as you thought - my site’s main blog is still down with a “500 Internal Server Error,” although other installs at the same domain seem to be working just fine.
Aaron - something’s going on right now. I got no page returned for the longest time. Good luck!
Yeah. One of my scripts isn’t running. I’m on Skinner!
Argh… let me procrastinate on updating all my WordPress installs longer guys =P
And wouldn’t you know it, 5.2.1 has just been released. Some days, you just can’t win no matter what.
Nice, so I’ll be able to install my wiki
OK this is a mess, Word Press 2.1 is a major change to the codebase, as a result many existing themes and plugins break when used with 2.1. I guess I’ll have to start running my own version of PHP so I can avoid upgrading 100+ blogs in 9 days. Well that and I’m actually advising against upgrading to 2.1 at the moment, they haven’t even updated the documentation for changed functions so in some cases it’s impossible to fix a theme that breaks!
Maybe you should push the upgrade off to about a month and E-mail all your customers to warn them. This will give people enough time to actually get prepared. I know that I’m going to be very hard pressed to get every blog upgraded by the 19th, there’s just too many of them. I also don’t think switching them back to PHP4 is the answer, that could break things too.
I’m confused, does wordpress 2.0.7 to run or just wordpress 2.1?
Javier Aroche: They’re saying any version of Word Press prior to 2.1 will (at least potentially) have problems. To simplify, since 2.1 is the current release version, ANY version besides 2.1 needs to be upgraded or it’ll start having problems after 2/19.
The same goes for MediaWiki and ZenCart actually, DH is saying anything besides the current versions will have problems after 2/19. That’s why I suggested a 30 day warning to let people get prepared. I would NOT want to be working DH’s support come 2/20, I suspect a lot of people either won’t get the message about upgrading (I haven’t received an E-mail about it, has anyone?) or won’t manage to get everything upgraded in time.
I’m confused. I have a Wordpress version 2.1 that’s currently giving me problems (having upgraded it recently). Yet another WP blog version 2.0.7 seems to be running fine as expected. Am I missing something?
confused guy: You’re probably running into issues with the upgraded codebase of Word Press 2.1. They made some fairly significant changes to things and 2.1 will break many themes and plugins. They also haven’t updated their documentation to reflect the new codebase so it’s not possible to always know HOW to fix a broken theme/plugin yet. Before this PHP5 upgrade thing came up I was advising my users to not upgrade to 2.1 yet, but to wait until at least 2.1.1 or so.
So basically, upgrade to 2.1 and experience problems or don’t upgrade and experience problems from the PHP 5.2 upgrade. It’s safe to say we have the electronic equivalent of being between a rock and a hard place here.
You didn’t say what problems you were having specifically, if you do I might be able to point you in the right direction, I’ve already dealt with a few and been able to resolve them. There’s others I haven’t been able to fix yet due to lack of documentation. (Basically I know the problems is changes to a function or a new function has replaced an old one but the new version isn’t documented so I can’t find out HOW to call it properly. This is a failure on the WP people’s side to document the upgrade. Yes I know it’s free, I’m not really complaining, it’s just very frustrating with Dreamhost basically forcing us to upgrade now.)
WordPress 2.0 is a stable version with no security concerns, and as it is now packaged with Debian the developers have committed to maintaining it for the foreseeable future. WordPress 2.1 is a new release that has not yet been patched, and for you to attempt to force your customers to ‘upgrade’ to it is massively inconsiderate. Why don’t you just use PHP 5.1.2? I haven’t had any problems with that.
Another fix is to change your site to use PHP version 4 in the Dreamhost Panel,
If I do this, is there any risk of breaking my site? Or should it not actually affect anything? I tried out WP 2.1, and did not like the changes at all. Since 2.0 is still being supported by WP, I HIGHLY prefer staying with that. I just want to be sure that switching to running my site on PHP 4 isn’t going to damage things.
What worries me, is that I think I have at least one plugin that requires PHP 5.1 .. so if I go back to 4.. I’m screwed.
It would be nice to have the option to choose from PHP 4.4.2, 5.1.2, and 5.2; the way we already can between 4 & 5.
What’s time will this upgrade be performed? - I’ve upgraded my site the day after WordPress 2.1 came out… I hope this php upgrade does not bring down my site, I’m 99.9% upgraded, except for some custom pages….The WP 2.1 Upgrade required major plugin upgrades, I lost about 5 plugins which have not been upgraded yet….
Am I the only one anxiously awaiting this upgrade? There are a few features in php 5.2 that I’d like to take advantage of, and I really could care less about my one wordpress site. I’m about to say adious to WP and rewrite the backend anyway.
Sigh.. tomorrow
>>> So is this happening, or what?
Sorry for previous truncated comment - let’s try again:
“So is this happening, or what?”
No announcement, but it would appear it didn’t …
Weird again on the WordPress version requirement. I have been running PHP 5.2 on DH for a while now and have done two WP updates since I had that PHP version installed. I guess that’s more of a YMMV thing though.

Are you saying you don’t like it when they recline the seat back abruptly or if they recline it at all?
I am 6′3″ and wonder why people think this is ok to do this.
Maybe because the person in front of them is reclining as well so it’s the only way for them to get a little fresh air to breathe.
am a recliner and then i sleep the whole flight, always on a window seat.
If anyone ever decided to start kicking or bumping the seat to make me put it up, I would put it up then started bouncing back and forth, moving all around, so they may be able to put the laptop or drink on the tray, but it may end up on there lap or on the floor making them wish for it to be just reclined instead.
Revenge is a two way street.
Why all the venom over such a small deal?
You “hate” people who “slam” their seat back? I’ve never had a person “slam” their seat back. The recline quickly, and if I don’t see it coming, I just say “ouch” loudly and then deal
with it.
BTW: when I put my seat back, it’s very slowly.
Thanks Php5 is more useful
