PHP5 Issues
Posted (February 8th, 2007 at 8:53 am PST) by TerriMany of you have noticed that in the last 24 hours that your Mediawiki, WordPress, or Zen Cart install was not working inexplicably. Customers may have found either internal server errors or completely blank pages. This is due to a problem we had with a PHP5/Zend Optimizer upgrade. Although we had tested the upgrade, and had upgraded to a small set of servers first, a problem occurred and it came to our attention that the upgrade had upset the operations of these applications.
We are in the process of downgrading PHP5 and Zend Optimizer right now. The majority of our servers are now successfully downgraded, but it will be about 20 minutes to a half an hour before everyone is completely fixed. We will be investigating the cause of the errors, as well as the events that led up to the system-wide problem so that this will never happen again.
We apologize for any inconvenience the upgrade may have caused. Please contact support if your site is affected and is not up and running due to this issue within 30 minutes. We thank you for your patience.
Update: The downgrade is now complete on all of our servers. Please contact support for any further problems regarding this issue.
UPDATE 2pm: We are currently running another downgrade on all our shared web servers as the morning one wasn’t complete. You may experience similar errors as before that downgrade, sorry about that. The process should complete within a few hours. We appreciate your continued understanding and patience.

I am facing a 503 error with my SMF installation with php5 base… wounder was that becasue of this issue or not…
also after DreamHost downgread will all scripts which were installed with settings in mind that its a php5 enveroment, what will happen to those ??

The downgrade was from PHP 5.2.0 back to PHP 5.1.2, not to a pre-PHP5 version.
Of course any scripts making use of PHP 5.2.0-specific features (such as the built-in JSON support) will now be broken, but 5.2.0 was only in place for few hours (on my servers, anyway) so there presumably won’t be many of those.
It would be nice to have an estimated timetable for the restoration of 5.2.0, though, once the cause has been found for the errors in WordPress, et al.
PHP 5.2 has new security fixes and such will break many older php based apps unless they are patched to use different settings or use the new techniques.

basically says to use file based session rather then database ones

basically says to patch older version or upgrade to newer versions that are compatible with php 5.2
we also have some Wordpress sites, but they didn’t seem to be affected.
This seems to have something to do with php sessions being reset in some manner.
Please let us know before you do any PHP upgrades - Some technologies don’t support upgrades well.
i seem to remember them posting that the upgrade was going to happen. just watch the status website for the next announcement.
that’s why they did testing first. Testing the one-click installs in particular, but probably a fair amount of hand-rolled software as well. Trust me, these cats know how mission critical PHP, Perl, Python and Ruby are to web apps. They weren’t born yesterday. They treat us all well.
Hi, since I seem to have been a victim of this problem yesterday (but did not hear back from support until 0630 today). It might be worth noting that I (not knowing what the problem was) reverted to WP 2.0.7 from 2.1 and that seemed to fix the problem (otherwise my rollback was coincidental with your rollback procedures for my server).
I have two clients running on Drupal 4.6 and Drupal 4.7.
Although I planned on upgrading the former in the next 3 or 4 months I do not have the time right now to deal with it.
Upgrading my MediaWiki from 1.8.2 to 1.9.2 fixed my site! (All manually done, I’m too cool for one click installs 
)
PS - Is now an appropriate time to start a flame war about how we should all migrate our PHP apps to Python or Ruby? Because we should. 
My sites run on almost 100% of my own PHP code. They were running with no problems with 5.2. I did see a Zend Optimizer error in my cron emails though. If these few programs are incompatible with PHP 5.2, it is up to them to update their code. Maybe the control panel should have an option to choose between 5.1 and 5.2 if the incompatibilities cannot be resolved.

now at 14 hours with my support request and my site has been down for 20 hours…. this Zend downgrade should have happened by now im guessing?, my site still says Zend not installed.. please could a dreamhost rep email me for the url i dont want to post in the comments since its under development… and before anyone says it I HAVE SUBMITTED A TICKET… its been 14 hours and no response…:(

To be more specific, I use a WP plugin for previewing comments (Filosofo Comments Preview), and when I disable that WP seems to work again. The funny thing is that comments (and previewing comments) behaved fine until today. I wonder if this PHP upgrade then downgrade might’ve caused the problem.
Mine worked okay again for a few hours this morning ( using Drupal 4.7 ) and now it’s out again. But contacting support gets the message that they don’t see a problem.

I don’t know if it’s browser caching, but perhaps it’s a specific function that has to call to the database instead of to a server-cached page?

I really don’t understand why DH had such problems. I run my own PHP 5.2 and the only issue I had was random “out of memory” issues wich was confirmed to be a bug in the Zend Engine’s memory manager and the fix will be in the next release. Other than that, my WordPress blog and some other applications I run are quite functional.
Would this downgrade be the reason why my site is moving so slowly right now?

So I’m guessing that’s why endperform.org is showing blank pages now… ah well, guess I’ll have to work on upgrading shortly

1. How typical of PHP to not be backward compatible with existing apps after an upgrade. Is the PHP community getting sick of this yet?
2. Why does dreamhost think its acceptable to basically trash peoples businesses regularly? It was a PHP upgrade this time, but when I was running Miva I had the store disappear overnight on at least two occasions.

The bug is intrduced by an infinite-loop condition located in wp-admin/execute-pings.php, which is implemented for “ping deley removed” feature in WordPress 2.0. If you have any un-sent and failed-to-sent trackbacks, this bug will cause the script continuously trying to send the first trackback in the “to_ping” field, and failed to process the other to_pings.

I am wondering why Ruby and Rails would make this kind of thing easier? An earlier poster said so. Although, they were scared of starting a flame war. No one seemed to have responded, so if anyone wants to respond here that would be cool. Quite new to that scene, so I hardly know anything. Well, I’ll do more research as well. PHP does seem to cause many problems that people say could be avoided.

It indeed would be very interesting. Especially since I would prefer to avoid this kind of thing happening in other businesses. Well, will just have to keep researching.
