File server battery swaps! (Done!)

Posted (February 13th, 2007 at 3:19 pm PST) by Kelly

I need to swap out batteries in three of our file servers. This is to help them maintain the integrity of YOUR data in the event of a power outage, or other hardware failure. These generally take about 3-4 minutes each, during which time none of your data will be lost, but you will also not have access to it. I’m sorry for the short notice, but our file servers also give us very short notice as well!

This will affect the Spacey, Swarthy, and Spunky clusters.

First one complete (spacey): Tue Feb 13 22:29:01 GMT [rc:notice]: The system was down for 183 seconds

Second one complete (swarthy): Tue Feb 13 22:40:12 GMT [rc:notice]: The system was down for 167 seconds

Third and last one complete (spunky): Tue Feb 13 22:46:27 GMT [rc:notice]: The system was down for 156 seconds

I’m done and patiently waiting…..

Hmm… My site is up but I can no longer access my http://FTP. Could this be related?

This is proof that repetative tasks become faster as they are done again and again. =)

Somehow this sounds like the beginning of a receptionist joke. “Good afternoon, Spacey, Swarthy and Spunky. How may I neglect your call?”

I have to say that I really appreciate a hosting company that tells you when the SWAP the batteries on their UPS. TU DH.

February 13th, 2007 at 9:06 pmUPS Battery Swap Says:

I doubt they’re swapping out the UPS batteries.

More likely it’s the battery backup in the RAID cards to ensure that any uncommitted data is kept until the disks can be powered back up in the event of failure.

A UPS swap would not likely cause downtime, popping the case to swap out the RAID battery will.

Hey, I’m just happy that my $8 a month hosting company knows what the terms RAID, UPS and Battery mean.

Is anyone else having trouble accessing the panel? I can’t get it to load — and I’m having an emergency with my server (it’s in a busted kind of way…). I’m at a loss as to what to do without the panel.

Humuhumo: I also haven’t been able to get to the panel since 23:30 PST.

Sorry Humuhum*u*. :-) And it’s back just now.

and it’s gone again :(

grr those outages are to often!

I don’t think so, jamiro. It’s just that there are a lot of servers, and the ammount of downtime per server is low enough for the price you’re paying for it. ;)

Even tho I’d like to see the panel back up again. :(

Argh.

Submit a ticket. Dont whine here unless you like hearing yourself blather. ;)

I’d rather they work on the server than try to answer a bunch of questions. I just showed up to see if I was the only one. Pass the Cheese.

I haven’t been able can’t access dreamhost.com or any of my own dreamhost sites today. Actually a lot of US sites have been dead today. I live in Sweden.

Well, maybe it’s Sweden’s connection to the US. Duh!

It’s the Snowstorm, darn global warming.

It isnt the freaking line to Sweeden Pooh, I’m in Washington DC and can’t get the panel to load either.

Have you run a tracerout to see if one the hosts in-between is down?

Ante, Pooh was complaining about all US sites, not the panel specifically. It’s very well possible a routing issue from his country.

I hate it when that happens.

thanx to dreamhost …

I love dreamhost too! Great hosting, cheap price and good support!

Great job done! Dreamhost is the best hosting you can find!

Thank you for this outstanding article.I thought Centrino was the best technology for laptop battery performance.

thanks,Other small improvements in battery life may be gained by the ability to turn off USB ports individually to save power.

good article,How about not keeping your laptop battery plugged in all the time. Take it out when you are using the power cord.

This is a good article.I think using higher capacity batteries is a good way to go.
