PHP 5.2.1 Upgrades under way

Posted (February 21st, 2007 at 1:37 pm PST) by Dallas

We missed our target date by a couple of days but that has allowed us to jump to php 5.2.1 instead of 5.2.0. We will be installing the new packages little by little on all of our servers beginning today. If you are using PHP 5 (the default is still php4 so you would have had to picked it when you set up the domain), and you have an issue you believe may be related to this upgade, let our support team know.

As previously referenced on the original status post…
http://www.dreamhoststatus.com/2007/02/08/php5-downgrade-completeupgrade-scheduled-for-0219/

here is a list of known affected applications…

- Wordpress versions under 2.1
Any version of wordpress under 2.1 will have problems after the upgrade to php 5.2 , the latest version can be downloaded at:
http://wordpress.org/latest.zip
Information on how to upgrade can be found here:
http://codex.wordpress.org/Upgrading_WordPress

- MediaWiki versions under 1.9.2
Any version of MediaWiki under version 1.9.2 will have problems with PHP 5.2. For information on upgrading please see http://www.mediawiki.org.

- Drupal
For detailed information on how to fix and upgrade Drupal please see http://drupal.org/node/102114 and http://drupal.org/node/92802

- Zencart versions under 1.3.7
Any version under 1.3.7 will require an upgrade. Info on upgrades can be found here http://www.zencart.com/

Another work-around is to change your site to use PHP version 4 in the Dreamhost Panel, but it is still generally best to upgrade your software to avoid security risks.

Dude, my databases have been going down all morning. Is this the problem…

How much time it’s going to take the server update? None of my pages are working.

February 21st, 2007 at 2:22 pmKai von Fintel Says:

All of my Wordpress sites are down. The error log says “Premature end of script headers: php5.cgi”. This is not just happen with the couple of WP2.0 installations I have, but also with the cutting edge WP2.1 installations, one of which was a one-click install from yesterday! So, there’s a problem here that goes beyond me running an old WP version.

My sites are down!!.. I’m loosing money$$$

damn it

Just to clarify in regards to Drupal:

Latest versions of Drupal (4.7.6 and 5.1) are not affected by the problems mentioned in the two referenced pages.

Drupal versions upto Drupal 4.7.4 and Drupal 5-beta 1 are affected.

Regards,

Christian Larsen

@kokua: This has absolutely nothing to do with databases other than the fact that php can connect to databases.

@yao: Each server takes somewhere around 10 seconds to be updated. No pages should go down at all.

@bugster: Your server has not been updated yet and will probably not be updated today.

@Kai: You need to contact our support team if you believe this updated has caused problems for your websites. Our own blog.dreamhost.com wordpress is working fine with the latest php version so wordpress itself does work. Any third-party plugins you have may not.

I’m running a site on Drupal 5.1 and it went belly-up. getting premature end of script headers ffrom php5.cgi. On host dhalsim.

I’m running two other sites, one Wordpress 2.1 and one Joomla 1.o.12 and both appear OK.

Feel back to PHP4 and Drupal site now ok…on host dnhlasim. Anybody else had any problems with Drupal 5.1??

@Bugster: If you’re using a 9 $US account to make your livelihood from, then you better wise up and get your own dedicated server/support solution. Costs more, but then you have such a thing as “SLA” etc. Nothing wrong with Dreamhost, but let’s be realistic.

I think my problem was with the Drupal “Links” addon module… links-5.x-1.4…

Hrmm.. all my sites seem to be working.

Ohh yeah, I forgot.. I spend a day (or two) a month updating my sites and the code involved. And I quit using one click install (did you know most of those programs install just as easily on their own?)

You guys with problems might want to try out the same.

February 21st, 2007 at 6:35 pmKai von Fintel Says:

Dallas,

You said that “@yao: Each server takes somewhere around 10 seconds to be updated. No pages should go down at all.” I had errors in my log for almost an hour before the site became accessible again. BTW, my WP2.0 installations are working OK without any upgrading, although I will upgrade them to WP2.1 when I have the time.

Any idea why the upgrade took almost an hour on the server my sites are on (dingdong)?

Any idea when all servers should be finished updating?

@Kai : dingdong hasn’t actually been updated yet so you must have had something else going wrong.

@kg: We’re not doing all servers today. The ones that are going to be done today have been done. We’ll do more tomorrow. We spread it out like that to minimize potential damage (for you and for us) if there are problems.

Thanks for the reports of success or failure, everyone!

I don’t know where else to put this comment because I can’t get to the contact page, yes, http://panel.dreamhost.com seems to be down :-(

Dreamhost blog is down too

Control panel is down??

Can’t access my site. Can’t connect to alondra via http://ftp. Web panel is down as well.

panel.dreamhost.com is down!?

i’ve been trying to sign up for hosting for a couple hours now and i can’t reach the signup page, this is starting to get annoying, made me miss the hosting sale that ended at 12pm

is this a normal occurance?
i do like your packages and policies, but i’m not sure i’m willing to loose reliability for it

please fix this soon, or at least redirect your main site to an upgrade page or something

finally :>
/me slaps silly software which doesn’t like php5

no problems on mine.
PHP5 has been fine.

Still no PHP 5.2 here :-/

Once this is completed, will you guys be upgrading to Wordpress 2.1.1 soon? WIth over 30 bug fixes and 1 security risk…Just seems worthwhile :)

nice that this happened without any direct contact. I had nothing better to do than upgrade a bunch of drupal sites after people started complaining they were down.
you guys need to get your act together. Ive had nothing but problems with Dreamhost since I switched over, but I guess that’s what you get when you choose the cheapest solution.

Could you provide an update on progress or schedule?
I monitor your feed and I know about it happening, but I’ve been watching and checking for 2+ days so I can inspect operation…. but I’d rather just check around time the change happens.

Thx,
Mark

@lance: This upgrade was mentioned in our most recent newsletter that was emailed out to every customer. It’s also been posted on this site for over two weeks now.

@Mark: We’re about 80% through the servers now. The rest will be done tomorrow. All upgrades that will be done today are now done.

Remember that for most applications you can switch to PHP 4 if you don’t want to have to worry about when this upgrade will hit your server. Then you can switch back to PHP 5 on your own schedule later.

I had the same issue with blank pages running WordPress 2.1. Turned out to be an old version of semiologic’s “External Links”. After updated to version 2.5 no problems. Semilogic even provides a generic fix: http://www.semiologic.com/2007/01/13/php-52-compatible-scripts-and-wp-plugins/

Seems that our WordPress blogs (http://www.optimiced.com, http://www.molif.com) work OK for now. Just one plugin stopped working - LightBox Plugin.

We are still on WP 2.05, I guess it’s time to upgrade to 2.11 :-)))

Hope to do it soon…

Thx for the update on PHP upgrades! You DreamHost rock! :-D

what about joomla? anything we should know about that?

and how will we know when this happens. will it appear in the panel. e.g., under manage domains will it say php version 5.2.1 instead of 5.1.2, will be emailed, please explain.

All good now…
Strange though, one domain (on same account and server) got a fresh copy of the PHP5 CGI (5.1.2-> 5.2.1) and the another seemed to get downgraded (5.1.2-> 4.4.4). I copied over the 5.2.1 to the second domain and all is good. (Using Drupal 5.1 and Wordpress 2.1.1)

No noticeable downtime…
Thx

Gene - thanks for the specific pointer to the filosomo plug-in - that did the trick.

General question: is PHP so fragile that an incremental upgrade will break so much, or is it DreamHost’s setup? Last night my permalinks mysteriously stopped working (no doubt related to this); I remedied it by unticking the:

Options -D Reading -D [ ] WordPress should compress articles (gzip) if browsers ask for them

That fixed the permalinks problem, but then comments were broken because of the Filosomo plug-in.

Jim Carson: It’s PHP itself causing the breakage, not Dreamhost’s setup. The link Hypercube posted has some more info on the specific issue with 5.2. I understand this isn’t the first time a new PHP version has wrecked havoc on people either. Apparently there are still a lot of places that haven’t upgraded to version 5 at all because the changes between version 4 and 5 were rather significant. It looks like version 6 (when it’s done) will be a major headache to upgrade to as well.

I noticed that this occured on my WPMU site, and it seems to be caused particularly by a few plugins:

WP-Slimstat
CG-Feedread

…likely others.. i will have to upgrade them and see if newer versions resolve the issues.

There is a notice on the Loudblog download page: “ATTENTION: Loudblog 0.6 does not work with PHP 5.2. Please use PHP 5.1 or below until I’ve prepared a fix!” http://loudblog.de/index.php?s=download. podcasts all used to play, suddenly several don’t.

hmmm, looks like php5.x is still having issues… I’ll stick with php4 for the time being…

I am having problems related to phpbb2 website.
Specifically the Admin panel which use to work is having problems, it can not find the tables and require refresht oaccess the pages.
Major problem is with Authority Mangement Panel, it does not find its table and even refesh does not bring it up.

How does one go back to mysql 4? I can’t find any way to do it with the DreamHost control panel…

I’m having a hell of a time with the podpress plugin on my WP 2.0.3 site, and wonder if this upgrade is the problem.

I meant PHP 4, not MySQL… but the questions stands: how to revert from 5 to 4?

Does anyone here use Textpattern….? Every time I try to make a change to a plugin I get this nasty error:

“Service Temporarily Unavailable
The server is temporarily unable to service your request due to maintenance downtime or capacity problems. Please try again later”

I wonder if the upgrade is causing the problem….?

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance…

yea PHP 5.2 was my issue. one of my sites was broken. @sparkletack: I just clicked down to PHP 4 on the control panel and whammo, the site’s back up.

Yay !!! Half of my webpages stopped working… but it’s all fine now. PHP realy made a good step from 4 to 5. Now its getting even better :D

Is there an old problem of this ? I tried to install my wordpress 2.2 but things arent working as well it should. My other mate is having this problem too.
Is there an upgrade or something right now ?
