Mail delay on junk filtered domains
Posted (February 26th, 2007 at 8:36 am PST) by andreaOn our system, mail to filtered domains is coming in through the junk mail machines, which then distribute processed mail to the regular mail machines. As mail service was affected by the outage yesterday, the junk machines got backed up, and are still. We have six of them, so mail is being processed as it comes in, but it’s slow. No mail is lost.

None of my websites are coming up now, all on different servers. Dreamhost.com and its associated panel is also not coming up. Nothing mentioned about that here on the status???

I concur with “concerned.” Email is what I use most on my domain (the website is in limbo). iPower’s inability to fix problems with my email were what led me to come to DreamHost. I really don’t want to have to move again.
I thought Dreamhost was a good deal, but man, these outages are killing me. Time to say goodbye and go to a more stable, better prepared host.

This is getting really old. It has been a terrible February for you guys and your server down time. I don’t know how much more we can take. I paid 2 years in advance and am still thinking it might be worth it to write that off as a loss and switch somewhere else
Yes my sites are down too. This seems to be happening at least once a week now. I can’t have that kind of downtime. You guys are costing me a money.
I’m also getting the IMAP server error.
While frustrating, this service is no where nearly as flakey as another one I was on for a while. They were purportedly a big company - but the communication was abysmal. I would report a problem and they always blamed MY configuration or my side of things.
At least I can check a board here, send an email, what not and have people confirm what’s going on.
Yes, I am also getting “ERROR: Connection dropped by IMAP server.” when I try to access my webmail.
Webmail is broken as well. We’re stuck with no secondary redundancy options here Dreamhost!!!

Unfortunately, I’m receiving the ‘dropped by IMAP server’ error also…
Power outages? Don’t you guys have UPS battery backup and a diesel generator? How about a secondary core router - no redunancy? Not a professional hosting solution… please colocate your racks at a real data center if you don’t have this, these days it is mandatory, not a feature.
That is a small price to pay for such a great deal on hosting. You want 100% uninterrupted with no backlog, hire an IT department and buy your own equipment and get your own backbone connection. I’ve been with DH for 2.5 years now and I can say that overall they have given me awesome service, especially given the price I’m paying.

Seriously. The only reason I haven’t dropped dreamhost yet is I haven’t had the time to move my stuff and select a new host. The consistency with which things are not working correctly at dreamhost is astonishing.

I’m sure you guys are doing what it takes to FIX problems, but it would be so much nicer if you could PREVENT them in the first place.
I’m paid up for 2 years and the pain of moving is a major deterrent, but I’ve stopped recommending DreamHost to others. I want to like you guys, but you’re not making it easy 8-).
E-mail is business-critical for me and the spam filter delays are a killer. I’ll be educating myself on routing e-mail through gmail for spam filtering. Wish me luck.

We could stand to have better status messages posted on this website. I was wondering if the IMAP problems were just for me; there’s no official post about it. I shouldn’t have to read user comments to find out that the problem is system wide.
Generally DreamHost has been pretty good. There have been a few times when their service was down during critical moments, but even with this, it’s a great deal. Good pricing, they always keep their software installations up to date, and they actually respond to the emails.
Yes, you guys are cheap and a good value, but I’d rather pay a company more money and actually have my email working.
@Steve: The UPS was the problem. They had to shut off power because if they didn’t, the UPS would have failed and fried the servers (From my understanding) more here: http://www.dreamhoststatus.com/2007/02/22/planned-power-outage/

If you hate it so much, move, it means faster service for the rest of us. Also, if you are “loosing money” in this, then move to a dedicated server, surely it’d be more cost-effective in the long run.

Webmail is working for me, and so is the web panel. I got an IMAP message twice, but wwas able to get in via webmail within 2 minutes of the first one.
What SQL problems? I’ve had none that I know of.
I have two domains hosted by dreamhost - the IMAP webmail was giving me the error message, the POP mail is letting me check webmail but my email client is not able to connect with my mail server.
Now the IMAP webmail is working fine, but I don’t know if it will stay that way.
Per the Critical Announcement on the support panel - I guess I’m unclear if this is about the Junk Filter. I’ve turned it off for the time being in hopes that my company’s mail will be able to connect.

I agree with this. There’s been info about the mail issues, but not a word about the SQL problems. And for me the databases stopped working about 24 hours ago. That is a LONG time where they haven’t said a word about it! And since two of my sites run off scripts that actually requires to connect to a database in order to load, that means that my sites are effectively down.
And now my domains are back up. A quick look at the server logs suggests less than a half-hour down time.
haha I switched to a new host, hoping that they will not screw up as often as my old one did. I guess I was wrong. Time to invest into my own server.
Giles, you are one lucky guy if you paid for dreamhost and you use it only as a big toy and not as a money maker. Cool! Unfortunately for the rest of us who might run businesses and who might have believed Dreamhost when they said they could handle our business, please forgive us for being silly and saying we are upset for losing money. Golly, we should be thanking them for slowness instead of complaining of poor service. Oh, and I just LOVE your comment about going somewhere else if we are unhappy so that you can enjoy more speed for your toy. Again, REALLY COOL! You go!

This was a planned event I find it inexcusable for any provider after this long after a planned outage to still be having network difficulties. As for your faster service after many split after tiring of the long outages here, you are more than welcome to my bandwidth because at this point they haven’t given me much to use anyways.
email outtages really stink HOWEVER… I hope Dreamhost isn’t wasting any time reading this…. and fixing the issues…. Hobby or Not - email is important…
Regarding “paying more for email”… I’ve paid more and received much less than what dreamhost has offered….

I’ve transferred about 7 sites away from dreamhost and this email outtage is making me change the 8th, which is a huge client website. I’ve been with dreamhost for 2 years and they’ve always been like this. They’re great people…but terrible server stability, the promised 99.99% uptime is a joke…and it’s annoying when they don’t have a phone number for me to call.

For what its worth.. I’ve been with DH for almost 8 years.
In that time I have come to know them as a fantastic host with excellent pricing, reliability, support, and options (like the dh control panel). Unfortunately the past year or so has been terrible compared to all of my previous experience. The frequency with which problems have been happening is much higher then its ever been. I’m sure its a result of growing too fast too quickly and the like but DH really needs to take a long hard look at their operations and size and make sure they are adequately prepared to handled their customer base with enough staff and infrastructure as appropriate.
I’ll be maintaining my account here for awhile longer in the hopes that things turn around and their operations catch up with their customer base, but I’m moving my critical services (mainly email) away from DH until that happens.
ps/ if anyone from DH is reading this.. I’d love to see you guys implement Zimbra hosting for email. It could even be an option that people pay a little extra for.
i, for one, would be willing to pay a little more for stability. the mail thing is killing us. it has been a constant annoyance since moving here. it seems as if the focus has been more on pricing specials to grow DH, but i think there will be a flood of people leaving if this keeps up.

Showing up on a status page and complaining about the service is your choice. If you can’t get to your panel and need to report an outage - email support@dreamhost.com with a detailed description… they rarely read or reply to the threads here.
I know email may not be perfect - but I knew EXACTLY what I was getting into. Spam Assassin isn’t very good at filtering, especially with the new image spam. I also don’t like Squirrel mail much, so I don’t use it. I signed up for a free Google Gmail for Domain account - and changed my MX record so all my mail flows through google’s spam filtration system and webmail services.
Sounds complicated? Well, google provides instructions on how to change a DH account over. Outages? None. Spam filtration? 99.8% (2 spam in the last 3 weeks got through…)
So, you’re asking yourself “OMGRLYWTF why do you stay with Dreamhost?”
Support people are the best in the business - I’ve never been treated better by a webhost than by DH. The extra storage and bandwidth is just icing on the cake. I would rather support this company with local jobs than to send my money to some other host hiring overseas support.
Now, if you’re running a business of any kind on a shared web service that you’re paying $10 a month for - then you also need to realize that you may want to pay more for redundancy and a more expensive provider may save you money in the long run. But you already made your choices didn’t you?
