Network upgrade!
Update: We’re all done with the upgrade. The available bandwidth between facilities is now 3x greater than it was before, with the ability to double the current amount at a moment’s notice. We hope this takes care of all of the recent issues.
We’re upgrading the network very soon so that we can alleviate the network slowness we’ve been experiencing. We’ve already transitioned most of the customers in our second facility over to the new network hardware, but we’ll be switching over to the new BEEFY cross-connect into our main facility shortly. Downtime shouldn’t be any more than a few seconds while the link comes up, but feel free to contact support if you notice any extended outages.

YAY!
March 9th, 2007 at 10:41 am
What does “very soon” and “shortly” mean? Does anyone know?
March 9th, 2007 at 10:45 am
Since my site is down, I’m also very interested in the meaning of “a few seconds.”
March 9th, 2007 at 10:45 am
This is very exciting news! I’m glad to hear you all are taking a more proactive approach to address the network problems we have been having lately.
March 9th, 2007 at 10:49 am
How about “extended”. We’ve been down 5 minutes now on all services so it that extended or not so extended?
March 9th, 2007 at 10:51 am
lol well i’ve been down for over a few hours now and still waiting on an answer so hopefully this will solve the problem before i die of old age.
March 9th, 2007 at 10:58 am
Wow! Finally some good news!
March 9th, 2007 at 10:58 am
One of my sites is down as well. Could someone be a little clearer as to what’s going on, exactly?
March 9th, 2007 at 11:05 am
[bryan said: "What does “very soon” and “shortly” mean? Does anyone know?"]
soon: in the near future; “the doctor will soon be here”; “the book will appear shortly”; “she will arrive presently”; “we should have news before long”
wordnet.princeton.edu/perl/webwn
shortly: synonym of soon
March 9th, 2007 at 11:06 am
Based on FasterFox, “a few seconds” currently means at least 717 seconds. And counting. I’ve already moved my mail for one domain to Google. I really don’t want to have to move the web sites too.
March 9th, 2007 at 11:16 am
Hey you said few seconds and its almost 50 minutes since my sites are down!!
March 9th, 2007 at 11:18 am
I’d presume that if your site is down longer than a few minutes (hours in fact), you ought to file a customer service report about the problem. Maybe there’s another cause.
Just wanted to raise that point, because I don’t think this is the place to get that support. Do you?
Peace,
Gene

Well, my site is back up, and I can’t believe it… the speed is, dare I say, BEEFY.
I’ve been a Dreamhost customer for 2 weeks now - an unfortunate time to join up. This is the first time I’ve seen my site perform at an adequate speed.
March 9th, 2007 at 11:28 am
Resolved? Really?
My MySQL link has been down for 15+ minutes now, and it’s not back up. Anything MySQL-related on my site is down at present time. The phpMyAdmin frontend to the SQL server (scratchy:forgiven) in question fails to answer, BTW (while the other SQL server I work with seems to be fine).
March 9th, 2007 at 11:35 am
I left dreamhost months ago due to all these silly issues. I come back to this page every once in a while and it really makes me appreciate my new host. Have fun ya’all
March 9th, 2007 at 11:56 am
The connection to Germany is really terrible (still). I only get around 20-35kb/sec up and downloads.
March 9th, 2007 at 12:01 pm
People use words like “soon” and “shortly” when they “don’t know” or they have “bad news”. If they knew, they would use words like, “in ten minutes” or “March 31st at 12pm”.
March 9th, 2007 at 12:11 pm
Well. If things continue as they have the last two weeks, I will be taking my website “elsewhere,” where hopefully I will receive better “service.” And, because they offered “rock-solid reliability,” I will be asking for my “money back.”
March 9th, 2007 at 12:13 pm
I do have to say,
The answer to where is the beef?
DH.
Much faster now.
March 9th, 2007 at 1:00 pm
It is very very slow.
March 9th, 2007 at 1:17 pm
Ugh. It’s taking about 20-30 seconds for my site to load.
This is “beefy”?
March 9th, 2007 at 1:25 pm
@MM23
Your site loads instantly, and it’s a poem. A poem. The OPPOSITE of “beefy”.
March 9th, 2007 at 1:26 pm
This issue is NOT resolved. None of my sites are regularly accessible. MySQL connections are down or not working. This is ridiculous. Every two weeks you’ve got some other “unforseen and out of our hands” issue that you are dealing with then apologizing for. If nothing improves, those apologies are worthless and pretty soon I’ll be moving hosts. Get your shit together people!
March 9th, 2007 at 1:29 pm
How about some RTG SNMP pron shots?
March 9th, 2007 at 1:29 pm
Same here, the issues are most definitely NOT resolved. Two subdomains of mine don’t work, and my favorite review site, also on DH, isn’t working. Fix it, PLEASE! I’m on Fairfax, by the way.
March 9th, 2007 at 1:36 pm
Check the latest update guys.
There was some problems with the router setup at DreamHost.
March 9th, 2007 at 1:38 pm
I would be THRILLED if these things were done at night rather than during the day when I’m on the phone with my clients walking them through documentation. UGH. It’s really hard to sell when Dreamhost is down or so incredibly slow that it burns.
March 9th, 2007 at 1:38 pm
I just have to say that i have had to visit this “status” site way too often. I’ve always had my clients’ sites hosted over at either ICDSoft (smaller biz sites) or GoDaddy (large biz), and with them have never experienced anything more than a few minutes of interruption. But now… i’ve gotten hired on at a new company to help with internal IT tasks and build a newer version of their sites using a CMS that is of course dependent upon the MySQL servers… this has been very frustrating. Too often now my workflow is interrupted due to some DH “problem” or “issue” and this company has 37+ domains hosted with DH and at times all or most of them go down for a few seconds or minutes. The MySQL always seems slow and too often is flaky. So far, I have really nothing good to say about DH except for their new Panel is “neat”… not a big selling point.
Oh Yeah, then there is also the email problems. Yikes! i have users all thinking that it is me that caused their issues because i had them all join a Domain just before DH got super POP3 flaky. anyways, that will be resolved by migrating to Google’s MX system soon. The only thing keeping me from migrating this company’s massive list of domains over to GoDaddy are two things, the time it will take and the fact that they just payed their yearly bill back in Feb.
*insert frustrated emoticon here*
March 9th, 2007 at 1:58 pm
WOW! I “almost” feel like an ass now. the sites, the SQL, everything is really popping, perky and “beefy”. Thank you, too bad I only have an hour left to enjoy this peppiness. oh well. Thanks DH, i hope you can keep this up and working now. have a good weekend ya’ll
March 9th, 2007 at 2:09 pm
My site loads fine. I’m glad the upgrade was done, my site loads much faster now. GO DREAMHOST! And my site has only been down SHORTLY for the scheduled maintence. Downtime has been less than 25 minutes in the last 3 months - I have host-tracker and montastic monitoring my site.
March 9th, 2007 at 4:49 pm
I am thrilled one of my new sites is loading much faster –critical since I have new prospects looking at my sites to evaluate my capability. PLEASE dont break this again!!!! I have been sweating bullets all week wondering if DH was gonna pull it out.
Hope I didnt just jinx it!!!!
March 9th, 2007 at 4:54 pm
My site was off for a few minutes earlier this afternoon, but nothing I would complain about, it may have been down for 10 minutes. I waste more time than that going to the bank.
It’s all about your perspective when dealing with these downtime. If you spend more time in a day going to the bank than the time your website is down, even if you’re making money off of it, that’s still not bad.
March 10th, 2007 at 8:16 am
For me, the issue is that I was in the middle of doing actual work on my site when it went down. That was the most aggravating 10 minutes ever, when all I wanted to do was troubleshoot my problem, and I couldn’t because they were down AGAIN.
Oh, and I hate going to the bank. Paying for webhosting should be nothing like going to the bank.
March 10th, 2007 at 9:27 am
Well, I should not be complaining too much but when your site is up and down for various periods, and a total of 12 hours of downtime in the past 48 hours, it gets a little depressing. I just hope all this stuff gets resolved because my viewership is getting eaten up one by one, as we speak.
And yes, my connection to my stuff is dead.
March 10th, 2007 at 12:49 pm
GREAT WORK GUYS YOU CRASHED MY SQL DATABASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THANKS
March 10th, 2007 at 3:38 pm
Dreamhost is the only way to go. Not sure why you guys always have problems. Everything works GREAT for me. Loving the new speed!
Keep up the good work guys!
March 10th, 2007 at 6:02 pm
@jer: I never said paying for webhosting should be like going to the bank. I said that I take more time to go to the bank than I waited for my site to come back up.
@Jason: Did you think about, oh, I donno, putting in a support ticket?
March 11th, 2007 at 1:38 am
I’m not sure it’s because the upgrade, but I know I never experience speeds > 90KB/s. Right now I have 320 kb/s which is my maximum download speed. I should test it with a cable at school to find out the actually download speed of my site. At any case whatever happend to Redondo in connection to Europe. It sure is great. Yay!
October 25th, 2007 at 11:08 pm
Great job done! Dreamhost is the best hosting you can find!
