Server “Fidget” is having hardware problems. (Updated)
Unfortunately hardware problems have brought fidget to its knees. Our admins are in the process of replacing it at this moment. It should be back on-line again in about 15 minutes. Another update will be posted once the work is complete.
I apologize for the inconvenience.
Update: Fidget now is running on new hardware and seems to be doing fine. Unfortunately it took a bit more than 15 minutes to do, but it’s done. If you have any problems with services on this server please submit a support request for assistance.

what is the fidget server? a name?
March 9th, 2007 at 7:56 am
Yes, fidget is my beloved web server, and runs (among many other things) http://www.aischool.org, the website of Atlanta International School. Good thing it’s spring break… but I really do need to get back to work.

Is this ‘Centipede’ server or a different one?
The Centipede server has been performing horribly now for over 24 hours with numerous documented (in the forum) websites that are being crippled as a result of the problems plaguing the Centipede server. When will something be done about this?

IF THIS IS THE REASON WHY MY CLIENTS WEBSITE IS DOWN RIGHT NOW SEVERITY LEVEL NEEDS TO BE HIGH!
March 9th, 2007 at 8:14 am
I think this is the first time —in 2 years— “fidget” bites the dust…
Thanks a bunch to the team for the prompt maneuver

@James: If you had read the announcement, you would know this only impacts ‘fidget’. Centipede is NOT fidget.
There is a full list of DreamHost web servers over at AskApache. Don’t know how recent the IP list is (I wouldn’t use IPs anyway, since DNS is working again), but at least if you have ANY question as to EXACTLY how many servers DreamHost operates (this is just the list of web servers; mail, mysql, fileservers etc. are not shown), and knowing EVERYTHING breaks eventually, of course DH is going to have more incidence of breakage. That being said, it seems most of DH’s problems are with networking hardware and configurations - maybe hiring an outside networking consultant would be a Good Thing(tm) - not to mention investing in some higher-quality NICs. (Josh, you listening to this?)

@Jody: Why should it be high? It’s a single server, they have identified the cause, and they are working on as speedy a fix as they possibly can. I don’t care how many clients you may have, or how much you make from your websites - Yelling in a blog (which, as the top of the home page says, in big bold letters, “Please remember, posting in the comments here IS NOT an official way to contact DreamHost.”, is NOT doing you any more good. Sure, you might feel better for about 15 seconds - but you’re not doing anything to help your client’s website come back up.
Anyway, DreamHost doesn’t guarantee any uptime in their TOS. If you misrepresented that to your clients, you’re the one with the “Severity: High” problem, not DreamHost.
Right, and people take you less seriously if you hide. Notice all my posts come back to my website; I simply don’t have any reason to hide behind a name (which may or may not be fake).

“Fidget” is back, it seems it’s been fixed.
I reported (via the Control Panel/Contact Support/System-wide Problem tracking feature) the outage about 30 minutes ago, and they were on it in about 10 minutes after that. Say, 20 minutes —give and take— to move all the stuff to new hardware… If this isn’t “prompt” then what is?
What I mean is that, the sooner you report an outage, the sooner they get to know about it and get to work on a fix.
Simply complaining about it doesn’t help anyone. The problem needs to be reported promptly if you want a prompt response.
Thanks again, team!
Hat tip to Scott for taking the time to drop an e-mail too

Thanks for the fix, guys. I agree — fidget has been pretty reliable and I haven’t had any problems worth screaming about.
March 9th, 2007 at 8:48 am
Oooh.. I like new hardware.. Speedy speedy..
Seems they bumped the CPUs from 2 to 4 (although I could be wrong about the previous number).

@Matt, I should have given more background. We have been experiencing persistent problems with Dreamhost for the last several days. I’m not sure what you use Dreamhost for but we have been using them for years in conjunction with our business so site outages can be a real problem. It really seems like problems are becoming more frequent. Also, if there is a site outage I am pretty sure the severity level should be high and I understand that needs to be requested via support not here.

This has been said ad nauseabum, but I wouldn’t put business critical web pages in a cheap, shared host service, that’s what a dedicated server is for. Remember: you get what you pay. There’s no guarantee of 99.9% uptime.
March 9th, 2007 at 10:00 am
99.9% hahaha
i would love 50%
March 9th, 2007 at 10:01 am
new hardware is always nice, yippee!
March 9th, 2007 at 10:20 am
i would take 10% up time at this point. this getting ridiculous
March 9th, 2007 at 10:20 am
wtf…. it’s time to admit it…. you guys suck.

March 9th, 2007 at 11:27 am

@Jody: I’m with Yao, if you NEED your site to be down a maximum of 10 minutes a year, then go find a provider that will guarantee that time. DreamHost guarantees nothing.
@hellhost, Tedd: If you were to calculate uptime over the last year, it would be AT LEAST 98%. Not too bad, considering the year they’ve had.
@nano: Well, time to admit it… You expect perfection in an imperfect world.
@Laura, Juan, pute, J: This thread effects FIDGET, and fidget only. And it’s fixed. If you want to know about a server that isn’t fidget, check the panel, I’m sure you can find the “Contact Support” link under “Support”. The sooner you put in a ticket THERE, the sooner your servers can be fixed.
