File Server Head Unit Swap (resolved)
We will be swapping the head unit for the file server that seems to be causing all the slow site and downtime problems affecting some people with the mail server “spacey” (you can see if thats from https://panel.dreamhost.com/ by clicking the Account Status link in the top-right).. there should be one or possibly two brief (under ten minute) periods of downtime for websites (not email) starting right now.. we’ll let you know when this is complete and how it went soon!
Okay, all done! It seems to have worked.. we actually switched the head unit for one twice as powerful, and now will be able to offload data much more quickly.
Our sincerest apologies this took so long to get resolved!

Multiple accounts on three different servers on dreamhost are not happy. All sites down, email seems to be working.
March 28th, 2007 at 5:35 pm
This one is going to cost me big time. Thanks Dreamhost.
It seems I spend more and more time in here lately. I’m not liking it one bit. I think it is time to find a better option.

Yep, I’m down too. email on spacey and website on perrier both have tanked.
But this time it was after 6:00pm PDT, so unless it lasts more than 12 hrs I’m fairly okay with it.

SIte down for me as well on Sunkist. Previously response times were slow (last three days load times were anywhere from 30 seconds to 1 minute), but now I immediately get this message from Safari:
“can’t open the page “http://www.babyquestions101.com/” because it could not connect to the server “www.babyquestions101.com”
I have opened a new account at MediaTemple.net today due to all the downtime issues. My site is much too dependent on uptime to let it sit on DH servers like this to get spotty service and not have updates addressed for days. The rep I spoke with today at MediaTemple said that MT used to be in the same building as DH, but that they are now moved into an entirely new building, and that it is a Tier 4 Center, the top in the industry.
Many people here on Dreamhost are fine with the services they offer. I’m not trying to sway anyone. I’ll keep the account for less critical domains. However, for anyone needing more reliable services, their Grid Server setup seems to be ultra reliable. Apparently, you’re not on just one server, but on a redundant cluster of servers, so if one or even multiple servers tank, your site is still fine and dandy. Sorry, DH, but I just need more reliable service. Hope you guys can figure things out to be more reliable for everyone still here.
Good luck all!

March 28th, 2007 at 5:37 pm
neither of my sites are working….i JUST joined, and set up 2 sites. Up for less than 2 days. lol. should have heeded the warnings about downtime.
March 28th, 2007 at 5:39 pm
I’m on spacey for email, and I can’t access my webmail, although the squirrel mail comes up but the connection is dropped by imap server. POP email is inaccessible. My websites are inaccessible as well, and are on horchata.

Looks like this helped my site out tons. Thanks you guys! I can get back to working on it now =]

I guess the good thing is that things seem faster than they were early last week. I personally can take a little bit of downtime if it means an overall speed improvement. (I know many people can’t…)

Geez, if there isn’t any open problem here, just open a support ticket
March 29th, 2007 at 9:15 am
On monster:
load average: 7.02, 7.20, 6.05
That still seems pretty high, and while my sites are no longer on their knees, they aren’t performing particularly well. Guess I’ll put in another ticket.

My site is, again, unworkably slow … help … it’s on powerade …
April 4th, 2007 at 8:07 am
My server is named after a beverage and my mail goes through spacey. So I was probably down, but I didn’t notice. So I didn’t get a chance to complain about it. Damn, I missed out on making like a whiney little bitch in public while pimping my crappy little website at the same time with a link (”look at my site… it’s down”). I also missed out on threatening to remove my whole $29.95 worth of business from Dreamhost “if things didn’t get better around here”.
Hopefully the whole data centre will blow up so that I can catch up on some back-seat system administration, I might even get to use words like “five-nines” or “redundancy” or other phrases that I don’t actually understand the real meaning of.
Here’s hoping.

I have a question that maybe someone here can help with. I saw an article talking about server heads that could be swapped out. Why was it not done before? I think it would simplify things a lot for people trying to use them and for he use of them around the world. I am surprised that this has not been done long before now. I know a lot pf people that it would help a lot being able to swap them out. Anyone working on it could have problems with just one character being any different. How can there be a debate about if it should be made universal? Computers and the internet are something that is used the world wide so we should all be using the same things. When it comes to anything with computers, I think that it all should be universal because it would help a lot of people.
