Web server “ugh” is not in a good way. (RESOLVED)

Posted (April 6th, 2007 at 7:31 am PST) by David

We apologize for the inconvenience, but we’ve found that the web server “ugh” is having hardware problems. We are in the process of replacing it now. We should have it back up on new hardware within an hour or so.

Please do not open any support requests for this machine until we have it back up again.

Updates will follow.

Update 9:11 AM

Ugh should be back online now and all services restored. Apache seems to be running OK and the server is overall showing normal load. Please contact us via the Contact Support form is anything seems amiss! It’s been up now for at least 30 minutes, sorry about the delay in updating.

You really need to rename that server! :-P

How about some servers on standby? Instant fail overs would be really cool.

How about “Arrrggghhh!”

Any coincidence in the fact that the update was at 9:11am?

BOOL-YA-SHACKA. I’m back up…

Waiting for Gene to come by to say everything’s fine, because it obviously is (and has been and always shall be, so saith Dreamhost) ;)

I can’t access the panel!!!! ftp is ok.

Panel is down. My websites on Fresca are very slow. Database server is down. Mail is down.

Definitely more wrong than just ugh.

My sites are just down!!

I like it when the dreamhost panel is down because it means they’ll get it fixed quickly!

panel works but it takes like 10 minutes to load, I was able to report one server

oh! WTF! People are DYIINGGGGG…oh, wait… I’m on rootbeer… rootbeer fliezzed out! panel is down! NOOOOOOOOO IM GOING YO DYEEEEE NOOOWWWW… :(

Yeah, foothill seems to be down.

Your site is up for me, Explorer. Not sure what you’re freakin’ out about.

Mail is working now. Perhaps intermittently, I don’t know.

Oh! all now is ok and workin, small downtime =)

looks like mine is back up, server is cappuccino btw.

yay they’re back! :D i heart you guys.

All is well in my neck of the woods. MySQL is back up. Panel is working.

Yeah! It looks like well now.
Thanks.

Arizona was down when I made my first post. Then my ssh connection droped, but could log back in 5 min later. Still no webiste. Should I submitt a ticket?

@Kaneyetalk - It’s probably Level3 DNS network issues again. This administration wants all our DNS, in case you didn’t know. ;)

All you people do is bitch. Did it ever occur to anyone that the Dreamhost staff DOES NOT RESPOND TO THESE COMMENTS? Just shut up and deal with it, or get out.

Wait. Brandon, are you bitching now too? Oh, but I digress…

Wahoo! Server “barranca” was down for about ten minutes, and now she’s a back. I love this service, it always keeps me on my toes.

They’re back… the last two weeks was a nightmare for my clients…

silk is down to, been down for about 15 minutes.

All of you guys are up for me.

For the record, I love Dreamhost and won’t complain about a five minute downtime, or longer for that matter. I only post the problem here for the benefit of other customers, so they can see if an issue is system wide or isolated.

wow… so much downtime… My sites are still down :S

im on mogadishu and its still down :(

WEBAKSESS - webdesign og utvikling? Yes you are, on my end anyway.

Daniel: Yes. But thats very strange, all my sites are down from where i am (in norway). Thanks for the information!

Crap… Someone fix this please so my customers stop yelling at me, and so we stop yelling at you. I really don’t want to go through the effort of switching hosts, but this has been down for a while now… Things were better when I ran my site off my residential DSL line :(

Webserver mrpibb is unreachable too, all my sites are offline!

I’ve had a client’s site–actually the db server–dead for a solid two days now, due to “someone flooding the machine”(so shut them down…) which issue has mysteriously not been posted here.

My site is back online BUT its WordPress install is not displaying properly! No sidebars, no header, no nothing. I’ve checked on multiple browsers, I’ve submitted support requests — my advertisers are going to KILL ME. Can someone PLEASE get me a status report on this? I’ve been a loyal customer for FIVE years but this is ridiculous!

‘Schweppes’ looks busted. Been trying to hit other sites on that machine, no dice.

You’re all missing the point. If We’re able to see your sites from here - then there is another problem creating the outtage over the entire Internet network. A traceroute to Level3 shows a potential problem on their end.

Arizona is back up

@Shannon: This would have to be a problem with your site, not DreamHost. With DreamHost, either it works or it doesn’t work, or loads very slowly. That your sidebars aren’t appearing may be a coding issue, that you have to check yourself.

Peace,
Gene

@Gene Steinberg: It may be that Shannon is having issues with the database connection, it can also has to do with the file user access rights in the directory where her blog is situated. In any case - Shannon; you should update your wordpress installation - your pagecode says 2.0.5.

@Rachael: Love your site :)

@Henrik: That is possible, but if the database is at fault, other than a situation involving damage/corruption of data, you should be getting a message about not being able to access the database.

Unless there is some reason to use 2.0.5, there definitely should be an update there. For those using the 2.0 branch, they can go to 2.0.10, or otherwise to 2.1.3.

Some plug-ins might be broken with the latter, but that’s something Shannon will have to check, as I’ve long since left that behind :)

Peace,
Gene

Mine Wordpress blog is working fine now.

@Gene Steinberg: Not always though, it depends on the nature of the database error.

@Henrik: Well, until the person involved checks the site to see what’s going on, we won’t know. As I said, it could be some corruption issue, although more often it’s some coding error that prevents calling the sidebar.

Peace,
Gene

Doh! but I’m glad I checked here and saw that the machine had changes. Too bad we didn’t preserve this information.
