File server troubles

Posted (April 13th, 2007 at 7:39 pm PST) by JamesH

A few servers are having trouble mounting one of the file servers they use. A quick list is amp, orangebang, ovaltine, tea, coffee, monster. We’re working to fix this right now, so if you’re on a server who’s name is drink themed please hold on.

not sure how you could consider this a ‘low’ severity…many many sites are completely down due to this problem

Seems like file server troubles are the new black. :| All of my sites on punch are not responding. Again. Severity low? Not when this is the third downtime for my sites this week.

yeah…All my sites on dr pepper are completely toast.

this is too funny. Just as I am setting up monitoring for my sites 5 minutes ago, dreamhost happens to go down. Again. I’m thinking, geez what’s wrong with this site monitoring thingy… why dosen’t it work? And then it struck me… what if the problem is in fact another Dreamhost Outage??????

Oh, and in case anyone is wondering… Clamato is a drink. A terrible, nasty drink, made of clams and tomatos. Yuck.

never drank ‘monster’ before :-s

is that some sort of fancy california drink? :p

Yes, I might switch hosting services with a better company. This is too much.

Monster is an energy drink, like Red Bull, only in a much much bigger can.

I am SO over all this crap!!!! I host one of my website with godaddy and never had a problem! I have this website hosted by dreamhost and EVERYDAY the site goes down for a few minutes. Yesterday, it was down for over an hour!!!! Is t dreamhost or nightmarehost???? You guys are cheap but we really get what we pay for, a cheap service!!! I am out of here

[Monster is an energy drink, like Red Bull, only in a much much bigger can.]

I hope they have better commercials than Red Bull….those commercials irritate me like fingernails to the chalkboard :p

Naw… Monster dosen’t even need commercials with all the free advertising they’ve gotten since Dreamhost named thier server after them! Theirr name gets on the web in a fresh blog post at least 3 times a week now… “Monster is down” etc, etc…

Second time today I’m down on Rootbeer. Over 1 hour and counting. It seems every day it’s down for at least a few minutes. I saw a lot of good reviews for DreamHost after ditching three other ISP’s so far. Now I can’t go on reviews either. What’s a guy gotta do to get a good ISP in this world?

Joe, I am on Rootbeer as well, I cannot run my website on this bullshit! Every day for the past 3, the site has been down at least on hour according to two different trackers

I’m out on Lipton.

I reported an outage at about 7. Monitoring reported outage at around 6pm PDT. Monster is awesome. I’m on smoothie. Dreamhost is on it and I’ve already failed over to another server. Corrupted volumes that have to be rebuilt is something every sysadmin has to go through at least once. Silly moving parts. After all hard drivers are the only mechanical moving parts left.

Up Time Down Time
2007 Yearly Total 99.312% 17hr 00min
2007 Apr 98.398% 05hr 00min 3
2007 Mar 99.462% 04hr 00min 1
2007 Feb 98.810% 08hr 00min 2
2007 Jan 100.000% 100.000% 00min 0

Where can you find those stats?

Just set up monitoring on your site. My uptime has been better. Anything over 99 is nominal. Thanks for working on it guys but please update us. And please escalate this to Medium since it effects multiple servers to the point where apache is not useful.

It’s funny because i can FTP to my site on nestea fine, however http traffic does not appear to be working… which really doesnt seem like a file server issue to me.

My blog occurs a ‘network error’ :-(

I thought all my domains we’re on the same server? Apparently only one of them is being effected though.

My ftp server is shasta.dreamhost.com I seem to remember ’shasta’ being a drink a long time ago….am i DREAMING or what? Why only drink-related servers?? Did someone spill a soda on the electric panel, as in the movie China Syndrome?…or the SNL spoof “Pepsi Syndrome”???

Is this a message anyone is seeing while trying to access their site:

Forbidden
You don’t have permission to access / on this server.

Additionally, a 403 Forbidden error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

Again? Lovely.

Two wonderful hours of absolutely nothing on Clamato. DH, you’re going to start losing customers if you don’t get your act together. Put the monkies back in their cages and set real people down at the equipment.

This is getting ridiculous. It’s like if you choose to host at Dreamhost, you are buying 1 outage every month. If it weren’t for my project that I’m hosting, I would have already asked my money back and moved on.

What the fuck is with the network engineers at Dreamhost anyway? Haven’t they heard of redundancy?

I only had two “outages” over the year I’ve been with DH. When I had problems I just filed support tickets… why people continue to whine here knowing that it’s not the best way to get heard?

Two days consecutive, downtime > 30mins for before yesterday, and > 2 hours for yesterday, I could not do anything, so I went to bed…
One server was even not able to be connected by any means. And then, for now, I have not all my files available…

As a client since March 2006, I was pleasured to host my site at DH, but recently, so many problems, plz …..

Look, guys, many of you are getting hosting here at $3 a month. For about ten cents a day, you can’t really complain. If the downtime is worth that much to you, you should invest in decent, reliable hosting that charges you for the quality of service. I’m on orangebang, my sites are down and I don’t care, because I’m still getting what I paid for - very little at all.

My sites back up guys!

We pay for having online service not offline one, even it’s bad but it’s online

Any update guys? It’s beyond the 2hr ETA…

don’t feel bad i have been down for 42 hours and still counting.

please provide an update

Thanks

This is getting pretty silly now. Been down for several hours. I thought Dreamhost had a reputation for really good uptime….

What’s also very irritating is that the severity of this is ‘Low’. It’s not the most critical since I’m presuming there hasn’t been data loss, but if you’re web server is down for ages.. I really would hope that would be a high, and not low, priority.

I’ve been down now for quite a while as well… I pretty much have downtime/an outage that last longer then 6 hours every week now

i dont think anyone can compaire to me and andrew andrew im the same man, its starting to get annoying lol.

I am online but half my files are missing LOL

You know, You people who are complaining SUCK! You start your own business. You try to manages all those servers. DH is really good at what they do. Plus, computers and are built by humans, which are fallible!!! You folks with your instant gratification attitudes and it’s all about me… you make me sick. either stop complaining or move to another hosting company… sheeeesh. you people will never be happy…

I don’t know who suck, but where are my files, it’s my online question!!!
Even backup files, I cannot access…

I have nothing in my hands

We pay to have our hosting managed, am I wrong?

no your not, im the same no backup files at all so carlos before you start talking to us about that, get your facts.

Is your server offline?

I would like to know what data centers they use and how old the machines are. I have 6 computers running 24/7/365 days a years and don’t have this kind of hardware problems.

@ Carlos:
I have started my own business, currently it is down, because DH cannot mirror…

DH WAS good at what they did, until about January or February when shit hit the fan. We have every right to complain

I understand where ya’ll coming from. I too have my own business. I don’t expect DH to be perfect. I do expect some problems. Whether they be big or small, they happen. Complaining does not solve the issue. Send them an e-mail stating your issue. Wait. Complaining just shows your impatience. Switch to another host if you so many issues with DH. My sites were ALL down a day or so ago. I just notified all my clients and said hey, just wait. these things happens. and they also happen to the big guys. and add worms and viruses and things out of DHs control. I am just tired of reading all the complaints. just my opinion.

Good thing my sites are not on the list. :-)
Hope DH can solve this isse soon.

not complaining, just looking for an update.

site on dr pepper up, but apis and scripts not there and content is about a week old. did sites have to be restored from a back up?

also just googled tizer to learn that it is a UK soft drink. My other site is on this server and is still unaccessible.

Again, understand that things happen, but please share some type of status

A free monitoring on your site at this site: For the one that was looking for it: http://www.siteuptime.com/

Heh.

Didn’t know Fiji was a drink; I suppose it refers to the spring water.

Anyway, good to know they’re already on it.

How many servers with drink names are still affected by this outage?

We pay for having online service not offline one …. heh :(
