Central DB Issues - Panel Down
One of our central database servers decided to take a nap, and it’s causing the panel to malfunction. Our admins are taking a look at this right now and we will have a status update for you shortly.
We apologize for the inconvenience.
Update: The server blew a drive and caused the machine to freak out. We have rebooted the server and it’s currently replaying InnoDB journals. Things should be back up and running smoothly shortly.
Also, it appears webmail was affected by this as well. We apologize for the inconvenience.
Sincerely,
The Happy DreamHost Weekend Warriors Team.
Update: The database server has completed its startup sequences and seems to be functioning normally. Please contact support if you are still having issues.

Thanks for the prompt response.
April 14th, 2007 at 12:45 pm
Squirrel mail is out too, for me at least.
April 14th, 2007 at 12:45 pm
Thanks for the status update …
April 14th, 2007 at 12:46 pm
I hope it will be resolved soon. My hosting is expiring in a few hours and I need to cancel it before it’s too late!
April 14th, 2007 at 12:46 pm
The panel, and webmail. Which seemingly has zero priority.
April 14th, 2007 at 12:46 pm
Still no webmail
Warning: mysql_connect() [function.mysql-connect]: Lost connection to MySQL server during query in /usr/local/squirrelmail-1.4.9a/plugins/dreamhost_virtualhosts/setup.php on line 262
1044: Access denied for user ’squirrelmail’@'192.168.10.0/255.255.255.0′ to database ‘dreamhost’
April 14th, 2007 at 12:48 pm
^^^ PMSL dunno why but that really tickled me for some reason.
And whilst I understand that shit happens I am starting to get a bit annoyed at having to check the host status site daily.
But I’ll still be renewing just for my crappy little sites that I don’t care too much about.
April 14th, 2007 at 12:49 pm
Hmmm and I was laughing at PanicRoom’s post not the two above my last…damn my feeble fingers
April 14th, 2007 at 12:50 pm
Lol. And that has to happen just now
April 14th, 2007 at 12:51 pm
Yeah, the webmail appears to have been adversley affected by this as well, however, I am still receiving the emails on my Crackberry.
April 14th, 2007 at 12:58 pm
Wouldn’t you have a backup for a ‘Central DB’? Seems kinda important, considering it takes out everybody’s panel.
April 14th, 2007 at 12:58 pm
God, I am glad I used roundcube as my plugin for webmail!!! I feel bad for you Squirrelmail users. I am a little upset because I cannot add or modify email addresses. The good news is my current email users are not affected.
The good news is that the FTP server is still up, so you can still modify and use your sites.
April 14th, 2007 at 1:08 pm
Sorry I am not very technical but does this mean that I cannot upload my websites at the moment. Iwas trying to upload via SmartFTP and thought that i was doign something wrong
April 14th, 2007 at 1:13 pm
@ Tracy : if you use a separate FTP client (utility) such as WS-FTP then you can upload files right now. If you intend to use the FTP utility inside the DreamHost panel, then you’re out of luck as the panel is not accessible at present.
April 14th, 2007 at 1:18 pm
Does anyone know at what PDT time do they usually automatically renew an expiring hosting?
April 14th, 2007 at 1:20 pm
Possibly 23:59 (11:59 pm)?
April 14th, 2007 at 1:21 pm
@ PanicRoom : probably about 2 minutes before the panel becomes available again
April 14th, 2007 at 1:21 pm
Angry Dog, if you go directly to http://webftp.dreamhost.com/, you can use the web-based FTP program. You just can’t get to it through the panel.
April 14th, 2007 at 1:27 pm
I find it highly bloody annoying, how dreamhost always goes down when I decide to work on things..
April 14th, 2007 at 1:32 pm
@ModdedDesigns
so it’s YOUR fault when things break!
April 14th, 2007 at 1:33 pm
@ Adam : thanks, I didn’t know that
I use WS-FTP so no worries here, but good to know.
April 14th, 2007 at 1:36 pm
Is this affecting anything else, for all of my websites on apu.dreamhost.com are down and have been for about 15 mins now?
April 14th, 2007 at 1:37 pm
New sign-ups page also seems to be down
April 14th, 2007 at 1:40 pm
Well, seeing that it’s the CENTRAL database, that doesn’t surprise me…
April 14th, 2007 at 1:43 pm
At least they’re letting us know
April 14th, 2007 at 1:48 pm
Yes, they let us know at least 3 times a week
April 14th, 2007 at 1:52 pm
Zing
April 14th, 2007 at 1:53 pm
I seem to have a LOT of troubles with Squirrel Mail … Not just now.
I sometimes don’t receive mail for hours, even at times days after it was sent to me ::SIGH::
I guess it was aptly named.
April 14th, 2007 at 1:53 pm
LOL @ PanicRoom. I’m about to upgrade to a dedicated server, does anyone else have a Dreamhost dedicated server? I need to know if it’s worth the monthly price.
April 14th, 2007 at 1:54 pm
back, thanks.
April 14th, 2007 at 1:54 pm

April 14th, 2007 at 1:58 pm
Ahahah! it’s back up! Time to cancel my account. Bye bye Dreamhost!!”
cool, now, if only on the cappuccino server did the same thing I’d have a dedicated server lol
April 14th, 2007 at 2:14 pm
Panel is back up and running now if anyone is interested. (pinging from the United Kingdom of Jersey)
April 14th, 2007 at 2:47 pm
Somehow this seemed to affect my dedicated server.
April 14th, 2007 at 3:05 pm

April 14th, 2007 at 4:08 pm
Seems like it got done really fast I never noticed anything down at all.
April 14th, 2007 at 4:20 pm
InnoDB… you guys are using MySQL for high-load, mission-critical work? Now I suddenly understand why the panel falls over so often…
April 14th, 2007 at 4:46 pm
John hope you moved…But you not even here.
Stop spamming you a..
Like we believe your BS
April 14th, 2007 at 5:36 pm

April 14th, 2007 at 7:26 pm
i love how you guys said that it took a nap. LOL!
April 14th, 2007 at 11:01 pm
Why isn’t dreamhost down right now? I wanted to party at dreamhoststatus.com some more but everybody left. Well, I guess I’ll be back in an hour when everything crashes again after they spill beer on the server again. Ooops, did I give away that they only have one server? One power cord, one length of ethernet, and one dsl connection. And no backup plan at all, well except for registering this site at a different hosting company, one that’s up 100% of the time? Pfffffttttttt.
April 15th, 2007 at 12:17 am
Suddenly access.log files for all my domains has disappeared. No Stats!! Even Awstats now refuse to update the stats.
April 15th, 2007 at 12:32 am
Blip…. another nap?
April 15th, 2007 at 12:38 am
mmm my the panel is down. MySQL is the best thing to use for databases to keep things running fast.
These big companies and websites use it: Epson, YouTube,Wikipedia, Flickr, Digg, Feedster UNICEF, DirectTV, and the list goes on at their customer page
http://mysql.com/customers/
It’s what the big boys use to keep us happy with page loads and streaming content, etc.
April 15th, 2007 at 12:39 am
Mmm I take that back it’s up and running.
April 15th, 2007 at 1:01 am
It is running, but it is running REALLY slow
Maybe we need to put a system-wide support issue in…
April 15th, 2007 at 1:28 am
Think it is a little happier now. Hope you access.log files come back. Nite
April 15th, 2007 at 6:51 am
@Shish & TheHeartSmasher
Maybe you guys shouldn’t comment about databases, when you don’t know what InnoDB is.
Psssst! A little hint - it’s related to… *gasp* MYSQL! *gasp gasp*
Anyways, glad to see things sorted out. I needed to file a ticket this morning about how my website loading too fast.
It’s very annoying. Maybe I should move back to hosting on my trusty ‘ol Commodore 64…
April 15th, 2007 at 9:05 am
@ Spamming Dirtbag John
Do you think you’re a bigger loser because you’re a spammer, or because you’re clueless about uptime?
Anyone that thinks they are going to get 100% uptime with a shared host should seriously consider blowing their brains out and quit wasting oxygen.
Maybe next, someone can post that they found a great host for $1/month that has unlimited bandwidth, diskspace and server resources. Hey, someone offering that would surely be deceptive enough to throw in a 100% uptime claim if it makes you feel better.
I really don’t get it. If DH claimed 100% uptime, would the downtime not bother you? Because that is how it works. You get downtime anywhere.
If you can’t swing a failover setup, then your website isn’t nearly as important as you pretend it is.
April 15th, 2007 at 9:09 am
It sucks that Dreamhost is having so many problems in this past week.
It’s the “Friday the 13th” bad luck streak.
April 15th, 2007 at 10:07 am
Panel isn’t responding here (2:06pm Eastern…)
April 15th, 2007 at 10:09 am
And as soon as I wrote that post, the panel responds. Argh.
April 15th, 2007 at 2:22 pm
There are hosts that promise 100% uptime.
Instead of posting another “I’m loosing money, you suck” message, http://www.google.com/search?q=100%25+Uptime+Hosting
Get off your arse, get some hosting quotes, and if you’re loosing enough money to justify their prices - then your choice is obvious.
April 15th, 2007 at 3:40 pm
Thanks for the update guys. I never even noticed it was out though. =)
April 15th, 2007 at 4:44 pm
Yeah this is NASA and we thought a shared host is the best for mission/business critical apps… (As are most customers here) We lost contact with the spacestation during the last panel outage…And still have 1 astronaut unaccounted for when he was working -outside- the shuttle (we demand 1 month credit for the missing astronaut!) We rely on the jabber service for this as well!
That does it! We are moving to another host that has 100% uptime and only costs $10/month!
April 15th, 2007 at 9:25 pm
My panel is working fine now
April 15th, 2007 at 9:42 pm
My CP totally down :(((
April 15th, 2007 at 9:52 pm
“There are hosts that promise 100% uptime.”
And there are imbeciles that believe them.
None of them promise 100% uptime — they promise to throw a few pennies at you to shut you up when you cry during downtime.
It’s nothing more than a marketing gimmick. Period.
April 15th, 2007 at 10:25 pm
I can’t access the panel and my blog as well.

April 16th, 2007 at 1:55 am
Still no signs of cp functioning properly
April 16th, 2007 at 3:41 am
Want some stability!
April 16th, 2007 at 3:42 am
Halo
April 16th, 2007 at 12:05 pm
Anyone else not getting any mails?
April 16th, 2007 at 12:17 pm
Oh, just a two hour delay.
April 16th, 2007 at 12:52 pm
Dreamhost gives a 100% free downtime guarantee.
ALl downtime, all free.
April 16th, 2007 at 3:04 pm
@ Commander X from Commander Y at Mission Control.
The shuttle side of NASA decided to use Dreamhost for it’s mission critical apps. Those of us in the Space Station team are hosted at FlyByNightIndustries, Inc. and we are proud of our 75% uptime.
You damn truck drivers [Shuttle Jockeys] all think alike. And if you ever call us “that damned cargo” again we are going to switch all your domains back over to Registerfly.
Kind Regards,
Mission Control
April 16th, 2007 at 4:41 pm
Actually, folks, there is only ONE Commander X, at http://uforeview.tripod.com/xfiles.html. All the others are pretenders, and should stop impersonating the genuine article
Peace,
Gene
April 16th, 2007 at 5:58 pm
lihuawei - Try lithium.
April 16th, 2007 at 6:05 pm
Commander Y -
Geekhosting huh?
http://geekhosting.com/web_hosting.html
And from the faq:
17. Do you offer uptime guarantees?
We do not offer uptime guarantees. Nevertheless, we do use high quality equipment and networking infrastructure and our historical uptime over the last year has been better than 99.9%.
April 16th, 2007 at 6:06 pm
well i was in the sleep when these thing s happen, So nothing to report, anyway thank you for resolving it before i wake up

I was just checking to see when the next keg of beer was going to tip over and break the mouse connected to the one server at dreamhost, I know they have all of these funny directories, tens or even fifty “servers” in there directory structure. Does Wal-Mart sell power strips? They don’t have any inventory in the back, only what’s out front. So, when the mouse breaks and the employee at Dreamhost can’t fix it because there is no backup mouse, and Wal-Mart is closed, we’ll know that bad planning again is plaguing our Happy Web Server guy, and he can’t click on anymore prono sites until the mouse gets fixed. LOL
April 16th, 2007 at 7:43 pm
Now that’s funny.
April 17th, 2007 at 2:06 am
What on earth is happening to my site? It shows up the installation page again! All my sites are having problems connecting to DB also.
Anybody having the same problem?
April 17th, 2007 at 5:09 am
Problems continue for my site - it’s been weeks now with no relief, respite numerous trouble tickets. The response is always the same - we’re working on it. I’ll bet they’re having a good laugh over it in the back room.
Mailserver problems for the last 4 days. My mail is inoperable. Site page loads are taking up to 5 minutes each …..yet every time Dreamhost says they tried it, the response is “your site seems to be up”. Yeah it’s up, you just can’t load any pages. I suspect it’s a canned response they use for all customers they have identified as “complainers”, which I’m sure I am by now. After all …How dare I expect my site to actually work? Very selfish of me, I know.
Dreamhost now has the distinction of being the worst-performing host I’ve had my site on in the last 2+ years. And I’ve had about 6 shared, two VPS and one dedicated server in that time, all with different companies …..in search of a company that can actually keep my site UP and running. So far, no luck.
Too bad I just paid for the upcoming month - I am SO getting out of here ASAP. Screw the ten bucks - I just want to be as far from Dreamhost as I can get.
April 17th, 2007 at 5:37 am
@Kevin ^
First of all your website sux and i just loaded it a bunch of times and it worked fine. Maybe you should get off the 14.4kbs modem you are using. If your “lame ass” site is that important then maybe you should have spent more money if the first place, but why SINCE YOUR SITE WORKS FINE.
Loser.
April 17th, 2007 at 8:07 am
Yea.. I cant connect to the panel either.. and mail is down on at least one of my domains. Just sent an email to support@dreamhost.com.. hope they get that.
April 17th, 2007 at 9:00 am
Can’t connect to my databases. This is ANNOYING, I am in the middle of changing a bunch of stuff.
April 17th, 2007 at 9:20 am
I am still having problems with all my databases. My sites are either too slow, display an “Internal Server Error”, or just don’t come up. No updates have been posted on this issue which has been classified as “medium severity” actually being a critical availability issue, and it also appears as a solved issue, which is false. A problem like this should never take over two days to become completely solved.
April 17th, 2007 at 9:33 am
@Ahm - That’s because this issue has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do whatsoever with YOUR database server.
If you had actually bothered to read the post, it’s clearly in regards to something COMPLETELY unrelated.
File a support ticket if you’re having issues. That’s how it works at DH.
April 17th, 2007 at 9:40 am
I’m seeing major time issues with my sites as well as my blog, but only my blog is specifically running on a db.
April 17th, 2007 at 9:46 am
@Mousee: File a support ticket if you’re having issues. That’s how it works at DH.
Uh.. how do I do that if I cant connect to panel.dreamhost.com???
April 17th, 2007 at 10:12 am
@Chris - clearly I was talking to Ahm. Indicated by “@Ahm”.
And FYI, the panel works for me currently.. sounds like possibly routing issues from your connection?
Either that, or it may be related to the latest blog post “Partial network slowness”… which I guess is possible.
April 17th, 2007 at 11:10 am
Mousee,
I know you were talking to Ahm… I was just saying that I cant get to panel to post a ticket.. anywho.. still dont work for me and mail is still down..
But Dreamhost does well and isnt down much so I’m not complaining that much.
July 11th, 2007 at 12:05 am
Dot5Hosting Database Server is Down!!! df39.dot5hosting.com is down!
So…….. don’t give me this cr@p about stability, thankyou.
