Partial network slowness
The main distribution switch for one of our facilities is experiencing high CPU utilization which is causing a small amount of packet loss. Only a small subset of our users are currently affected and we’re working on determining the exact cause of the problem. We’ll post an update as we get more information.

Which servers are affected? I’m on drpepper and I think my site is down.
April 17th, 2007 at 10:11 am
sites* rather
April 17th, 2007 at 10:12 am
It’s not the servers. It’s the databases. My server is working fine, but I can’t load anything off MySQL server clifford.

We are experimenting some email delay, i’m on postal email server, i’ve posted one email support on the support section.
April 17th, 2007 at 10:15 am
You’re FTP server bugatti.dreamhost.com is very slow indeed! Trying to dl a 7Mb file was crawling down at 20-30KB per sec!
I just signed up for 2 years, but are there any European customers who can confirm that a 8Mb/s dl is possible?
April 17th, 2007 at 10:15 am
my ftp client keeps terminating the connection after timing out due to lack of response. Dr. Pepper. My WP blog, also on Dr. Pepper just spins and spins and spins, no error message, but it doesn’t load either. Another day at the DH office.
April 17th, 2007 at 10:23 am
Will, I can confirm that 8MB download is possible.
April 17th, 2007 at 10:27 am
My sites are back online
April 17th, 2007 at 10:28 am
Actually the servers themselves are still quick. I have an all html webpage, no db, and it’s still very very quick.
April 17th, 2007 at 10:29 am
My blog is still not loading.
April 17th, 2007 at 10:30 am
My sites were slow last night, but now they are fine
April 17th, 2007 at 10:57 am
all my sites on drpepper were down as well. up now. also a site i know is on dreamhost (”monster”, i think?) was down and came back up as soon as my sites did.
April 17th, 2007 at 5:24 pm
My site is slow but it usually is this slow as far as the database is concerned.
April 17th, 2007 at 7:50 pm
my website is so slow!!! Even frequently cannot visit it and upload with FTP!!!
April 17th, 2007 at 10:31 pm
My email is very slow
April 18th, 2007 at 12:20 am

Yeah, can’t connect to MySQL servers on “lassie:gdovin” from “jolt”.
April 18th, 2007 at 4:52 am
I can’t connect to my blog, and have had complaints from readers. Please help!
April 18th, 2007 at 6:11 am
I’m on the stewarts server and my pages won’t load at all. They just keep spinning as stated above, no error message, just won’t load…

April 18th, 2007 at 6:31 am
I am having problems conneting to DBs on jolt. Sometimes I can connect, sometimes I can’t.
April 18th, 2007 at 6:45 am
We are not amused!
It still is unworkable, see http://tttnu.dreamhosters.com
Try to load and view the 7Mb flash: it doesn’t work. Also downloading from FTP server bugatti.dreamhost.com is extremely slow!!!
If it stays on like this I will use the “97-Day Money-Back Guarantee” !!
April 18th, 2007 at 7:09 am
@Wil
The Triton site is what you are referring to, correct? Load is kinda slow indeed. But then again, I’d leave any site that requires me to load a 7meg file…

April 18th, 2007 at 7:41 am
We’re experiencing 500 http errors, I think due to database access. The db seems to be running kind of slow.
April 18th, 2007 at 7:42 am
Anyone on necco having problems as part of the mayhem? I can’t access my domain or any subdomains, I keep getting 403 errors. I haven’t been messing with webroot permissions.
I’m on elmyra for mysql and it works fine, btw.
April 18th, 2007 at 8:03 am
@snewp
Well have a look at my current Dutch host: http://www.ttt.nu
It works very fast and the customer likes it….
Here in Holland most families and companies have at least 2Mb ADSL so…
April 18th, 2007 at 8:41 am
A normal day for Dreamhost! Now it’s time for someone to post about how cheap Dreamhost is and how cool they are!
April 18th, 2007 at 8:43 am
Slow on cappuccino every day, a couple of times a day for 45 minutes at a time. Our site is SQL heavy, so it may be a db issue. We had much worse results at our previous host, though.
April 18th, 2007 at 9:36 am
Slow on ritz (web) and tramp (MySQL)… 10-15 seconds to load my WP site… =(
This is the first time I’ve been affected by performance this bad.
*crosses fingers for performance to return*
April 18th, 2007 at 9:48 am
tonic (web) and marmaduke (MySQL) are super sluggish rigth now.
April 18th, 2007 at 10:32 am
beaudry not working…
April 18th, 2007 at 10:42 am
@Wil Bremers
My FTP client was crawling along at around 30kbs (using SFTP). I’ve just switched it to normal FTP and the download rate has shot up to around 300kbs. If you are using SFTP(ssh) it might be worth trying FTP to see if it makes a difference.
April 18th, 2007 at 10:44 am
forgot to say
webserver = tizer, filesystem mounted on .mikey, dbs = barkley
April 18th, 2007 at 11:35 am
Don’t know if this is part of this problem or another problem altogher but I cannot upload my files when I open them they just empty. Try to write them, save them, re-open them … still empty.
April 18th, 2007 at 11:49 am
I use gatorade server and the DBs still very slow.
April 18th, 2007 at 11:52 am
Pinging my website (www.zxian.org) gives me timeouts, while pinging mail and MySQL servers is fine…
April 18th, 2007 at 12:12 pm
@wil
Guess where I’m located
Anyway, that other site is running alot faster, but why not host it there then?
I’m not gonna tell you what servers I’m using here at DreamHost (don’t want to jinx it!) but I don’t have many problems, besides the recent systemwide outage almost none actualy… I’m running a truckload of DB driven (sub)domains here and all is fine. Not sure why your site is sluggish, but putting in a support ticket wont hurt
snewp.
April 18th, 2007 at 12:39 pm
Site seems to be back - let’s hope its fixed for good.
April 18th, 2007 at 1:04 pm

April 18th, 2007 at 7:13 pm
Guys, I have to say that. I bought 2 years of L1 plan and in one month this is the fifth time I get my site down. I don’t know if I love it or hate it.
April 18th, 2007 at 7:18 pm
yeah im in the same boat. i have put 2 months of 16 hour days setting up many qualtiy sites, only to have all my traffic i PAID FOR being sent to a site that isnt even there. Im getting my money back and starting over somewere else. just sucks all that work, alot of it talking to people, getting solid traffic sources, is for nothing.
April 18th, 2007 at 7:29 pm
This is so depressing :’(
Smoothie is giving back a 500 Internal Server Error…
April 18th, 2007 at 7:33 pm

April 18th, 2007 at 9:52 pm
PS. I don’t go through you guys, but I prolly should someday.
April 19th, 2007 at 1:15 am
yeah tonic (web) is unresponsive atm. although i can ping it and also my website!
come on dreamhost, pull your socks up, and get this sorted!
April 19th, 2007 at 4:00 am
We are having problems conneting to databases. Sometimes we can connect, sometimes we can’t
blah blah …
April 19th, 2007 at 5:47 am
Atrocious network… I can’t connect via FTP, SFTP, SSH, telnet, or web. Pinging my server winds up with 80% packet loss, and most of the pings that do return are above 250ms (I usually see ~25ms). I’ve spent the last seven hours working on my site, and am really pissed now that my “groove” has been lost courtesy of the outage.
First major DT I’ve noticed in a week here. Call this “strike 1″; three strikes in 90 days and Dreamhost is out.
April 19th, 2007 at 8:57 am
Is anyone else having problems posting to the LAX datacenter article at the top of the blog?
April 19th, 2007 at 9:41 am
Actually the problem is with the whole cluster and if the server is on that cluster then its being affected. My guess is it lies in a router somewhere. Other servers are not affected and only this cluster is. My download speed has become terribably slow and im only getting around 100 - 150 Kb/s and I usually get somewhere between 700 - 900 Kb/s.
Also im with you on that one Dr. Jones. If Dreamhost cant keep things in shape within 90 days also im sayin the same thing you are.
And I have contacted dreamhost about the problem and all there willing to do is transfer me to another machine and the list of machines that they have given me are all on the same cluster that is being affected. So all of those machines connections are exactally the same.
April 19th, 2007 at 11:23 am
Two days and no updates? I like Dreamhost a lot, but this is not cool.

THE STORY OF HOW THINGS GO TO WASTE:
this is what really pisses me off. first this:
(which lasts from minutes to hours)
http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r97/MyGothicHeart/servererror.jpg
then when i check hosttracker:
http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r97/MyGothicHeart/htracker.jpg
then…
http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r97/MyGothicHeart/hits.jpg
PLEASE FIX IT UP. THANK YOU.
April 19th, 2007 at 12:17 pm
i give up. i even hate my own site now. i’ve waited for over 30 minutes now… nothing still. just a freakin’ INTERNAL SERVER ERROR.
April 19th, 2007 at 12:24 pm
i took those screenshots 20 minutes from tryin to wait for it to come back. it actually started 3:47 am. i will take a screenshot again of the time now…
http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r97/MyGothicHeart/421.jpg
STILL NOTHING. i might have to register the domain INTERNALSERVERERROR.COM that way it will serve its purpose.
April 19th, 2007 at 12:30 pm
i’m going to sleep. this is a waste of time. i feel like punching the computer screen. good night everyone!
April 19th, 2007 at 12:32 pm
Sites went down again. For how long this is gonna continue?
April 19th, 2007 at 12:37 pm
site on tizer down again. anyone else?
April 19th, 2007 at 12:39 pm
*raises hand* but mine’s back up now. miraculously.
April 19th, 2007 at 12:41 pm
My site is down too!!
April 19th, 2007 at 12:45 pm
Our site on mountaindew.com is down and has been for over an hour now. This just sucks.
April 19th, 2007 at 12:46 pm
whoops, that was mountaindew server is down, or at least our site. FTP, MySQL and of course the web site. Thanks Dreamhost.
April 19th, 2007 at 12:52 pm
seems like “beverage” cluster still is not 100% recovered from last weekend’s issues.
April 19th, 2007 at 12:56 pm
the beverage cluster is the absolute worst. we have had 5+ hours of downtime this month already. worst yet, I put in system wide status and it came back fine. I guess its just our site, but that would be strange.
April 19th, 2007 at 12:57 pm
This sucks, when they are going to finally fix this problem? my page is ok for some hours and then boom i get an Internal Error Service… come on hurry up fixing this problem pretty please… it’s a pain in the ass to switch all my domains again…
April 19th, 2007 at 1:09 pm
site on tizer back up. Thank you.
April 19th, 2007 at 10:05 pm
my website has stopped about 5 hours, please qiuckly!!!!!!!!!!!!
April 19th, 2007 at 10:07 pm
the computer of “boba” is so poor
April 20th, 2007 at 3:56 am
Jesus Christ ! My websites are down again and very slow too! Third time in a week. I’m on boba. What’s going on ? I’am only 1 month DH user and these things are freaking me !!!!!!!!!
April 20th, 2007 at 5:00 am
Slow! Slow!! Slow!!!
Which servers are affected?
April 20th, 2007 at 6:04 am
someone’s playing rocket arena on the distro switch again
April 20th, 2007 at 8:17 am
Sorry Dreamhost, I just left and got my money back. That at least works really well to my big relief
April 20th, 2007 at 8:22 am
we’re frustrated here on boba as well. problem has been around for several days, but today I have not been able to access sites for 6 hours now. i abandoned free hosting to avoid issues such as these and I am not sure what I am paying for now.
April 20th, 2007 at 9:13 am
Now, fourth time in a week …
MY STATUS - ALMOST LEAVING DREAMHOST
April 20th, 2007 at 9:52 am
Is this affecting pacer too? in pings i’m seeing ~19% packet loss, 15% > 90ms (when things are working right i see 30-55ms). this means only 66% of my data is making it through as intended on the first try.
it’s nice that DH is honest and doesn’t try to make a service level guarantee that they can’t keep to, but regardless i still expect a certain level of service otherwise my visitors can’t use the tools i’ve created for them and then what’s the point of paying to have a site in the first place?
April 20th, 2007 at 12:04 pm
Any response from DH? Again smoothie is unresponsive. Damn!
April 20th, 2007 at 12:28 pm
I am getting a 500 error on my site. I run on smoothie. It wasn’t like this until about half an hour ago. I just bought 1 year of L1. Third time the sites gone down…
April 20th, 2007 at 12:34 pm
My website’s users are hating me so so so much now.
I am getting a 500 error on my site too, (on smoothie).
April 20th, 2007 at 9:42 pm
oh crap, same here netza. the only time i go back to check messages here is if when i get problems with the hosting. and now i’m getting server errors and extreme laginess that i can’t access my site and other members too.
April 22nd, 2007 at 12:46 am
aaahhh it’s happening again. internal server errors. damn.
April 22nd, 2007 at 6:29 am
This is very very very annoying…this is the 5th day we are experiencing downtime…..not sure how long we can endure this…we are about to pull the plug, this is ridiculous.
April 22nd, 2007 at 6:34 am
2 days later, my site was up, now it went back down.
April 22nd, 2007 at 7:37 am
I’m on Tootsie. My site was fine but now it is either incredibly slow or not loading at all. I hope this is fixed soon!
April 22nd, 2007 at 9:38 pm
seriously. i’m never here if things are loading right at my site.
April 23rd, 2007 at 12:03 pm
Are you all on the same cluster or something? I have no problems on any of my sites… this is weird, seems like part of their network is crap, but (obviousl) most is working fine.
April 23rd, 2007 at 5:18 pm
It would be nice if they would say something. We’re sorry, go jump in a lake, something…
April 23rd, 2007 at 9:49 pm
i’m on pacman, and am back again. coz site just won’t load. i don’t like having to go back here, but i need to check if other people are experiencing the same thing as well.
April 24th, 2007 at 4:33 am
My websites are down again… good job dreamhost.
April 24th, 2007 at 10:42 pm
My sites are up, I experiences about a half hour downtime today, but that’s my longest downtime in a couple months (since the power in the building went to crap).
Maybe if you contact support, they can not only fix your site, but move you to a different cluster.
April 25th, 2007 at 7:19 am
Have we got an update on this situation as of yet? I read your reasoning, but I know with my work in the DC here we just swicth it out with a new one and see how it works, not sure what you guys are doing, but anymeans it aint working worth shit. You might wana get a CCNA in there and get this figured out, its already taken longer then any fix should.

April 26th, 2007 at 12:45 pm
My site is inaccessible also. I’m beginning to wish I had not used dreamhost as a host. This is becoming a weekly issue . On top of that my site is slow alot of times when it is up and its just a phpbb site with at most 15 people on at a time. I always seem to get some kind of lame excuse from support . Im really on my last leg here and thinking about moving to a more STABLE host . I also work in the IT field and understand that problems do come up , but this is ridiculous .
