Downtime on spacey cluster
Posted (April 19th, 2007 at 12:58 pm PST) by andreaOne of our file servers is getting rebooted. This may be causing slowness or downtime if your domains/email is on the spacey servers. No data was affected. You can verify if this affected you by checking your Account Status (Your Email Server) on the upper right side of the control panel.
We apologize for the inconvenience. Please check back for updates.

Tonic down too (as of the past 20 minutes or so, after it already received a reboot a few hours ago).
Finally! I’ve been moaning for about an hour.
Email’s on Spacy, domains on Crush, and like Matthew my domains won’t resolve either.
I’m thinking there must be some really big problems with spacey, it’s been in and out for the past day or so. It’s actually getting quite frustrating for me. I would really like to see this resolved sometime soon. Cheers.

So this is motive from bad_httpd_conf ?????
Seems like horchata is down too.
@John: I concur. The past days I’ve had to pretty much open support tickets every other day because of tonic’s FTP/shell/web being down. Mail is on spacey but I haven’t noticed much of that (because I have primary MX running to my own mail servers).
ZOMG, it’s a Dreamhost Holocaust!
Me too.

This seriously seems to happen whenever I am about to show a client their new site… boo hoo for Warwell….
tonic down, spacey down.
I think I pay to see “Site Unavailable” at this point.
All of our sites and clients’ completely down on Marvin server, and Randy email server. It’s been down all afternoon….
Not the right time for this! We need our site bad.
We’re trying to get a “Web Orange And Maroon Effect” going for Friday. We’ve challenged all webmasters and bloggers to incorporate VT colors into their site for the day. Learn more and check sites that are participating.
I say we march to the headquarters of Dreamhost and demand lower prices if they’re going to keep crashing our websites!
We can chant something like…
“H-T-T-P-4-0-4, we don’t want to pay no moe!”
I cannot connect to any of my sites, but logging in and seeing my files does work.
Anyway this is becoming something of a regular occasion and it’s not much fun.
A seperate issue, I’ve logged a ticket with email problems ftp issues and accessing websites on monster
Orangebang seems to be down too
@buzzdroid: Learn more? The link doesn’t work, the site is down!
DreamHost’s BBB report:
http://www.labbb.org/BBBWeb/Forms/Business/CompanyReportPage_Expository.aspx?CompanyID=13131294
@Matthew: Yeah, I understand that. Was just trying to bring a little light humor to the ongoing sad frequency of the downtime.
good for you buzzdroid, right on.
This is the 3rd time since I started using dreamhost in January. Please make the service more stable!
Great… their rating is a B. Not a BB or a BBB, but a B. I switched over from ICDSoft.com because I really like having all of my domains housed in one area with the unlimited DBs and a ton of disk space. Of course none of that jack squawt if they’re always unavailable.
I cried when I left ICDSoft. Their support staff never went past an hour before getting back to me. Normally it was within 20 minutes. I think I had one outage with them for all of two minutes.
Here I get ignored until after the problem is fixed. I have never in my IT life heard of a 10 hour outage.
Tonic is down too… ALL my sites are down, jesus. Every week I have one day where a site has problem, what’s going on guys!??!?!
Half of my site was disappeared. Web on crush, mail on spacey.
I find it funny that their site never goes down.
Ah, look, some sites on tonic are coming back up right about now…
Well… Don’t hurry off and join another service like this one…. surpasshosting.com is 1000 times worse and more expensive!
I’m sure it will be fixed asap…. at least they notify us - some other companies don’t even do that!
Drink some water, get scared DreamHost…. hope you get rid of the hiccups asap!
April 09th, 2007 (late in the evening).
I started monitoring (with Montastic) my domains hosted on DreamHost
by, April 19th, 2007
I have received over 117 emails telling me my websites went down and up.
So, if you figure about half for down and the other half for up.
The down time was for anywhere between 30mins. to over 2.5 hrs.
that websites were not reachable.
That’s … approximately 58.5 downs in 10 days
@StefanDidak are your sites okay now?
Henrik: Yes, it looks like things are all there. Responding a bit sluggish but that is often the case after a major reboot/remount for a few minutes.
After reading all of this ( something I should have done first - duh ) I’m giving these guys another week before I jump ship. None of my projects are in critical mode …yet.
However, if I’m proporting to be a professional, there’s no way in hell I can go to my clients and tell them I’m going to host their websites with a company that seems to be down just as much as they seem to be up.
Why are these guys so unstable? bad hardware or software?
@Henrik: Not a minute after I said it’s all running again… they’re all timing out again. I think you jinxed it by asking.
up…then down…back up…then down…getting dizzy
@Jeff G: rename dream*.* bungie*.*
I see why my sites going solwly now. Thanks for the warning. But the DOWN DOWN AGAIN maybe make me insaned.
Mail has been out for 4 days now and I can’t even get a call back.
Is the service always like this
@StefanDidak: Did you check the network latency from your computer to “your” Dreamhost-server?
How might I do that?
@Henrik: Yeah, I did. The latency is very low and not different from normal, that’s about 90-150ms on average (from the three different broadband hookups running from my home to get a clear picture) for both tonic.dreamhost.com (which appears to actively refuse any connections right now) as well as the few different web servers/names/IPs.
@StefanDidak: Ah, I see. What did the support say about your issues? And are you running any dynamically generated (database run) sites?
@swills: You do a traceroute from your pc to your domain.
I had wondered why my sites were being sluggish.
@Henrik: Earlier today when everything went down I was told that tonic was rebooted and was having some problems (like it has been the past week, every other day or so), haven’t heard back from the second ticket I opened before the status post appeared. Two sites (www.stefandidak.com and http://www.podcastasylum.com have a WP back-end so there’s some DB stuff but pages that do not require any DB connection also timed out just the same). Ditto for FTP/shell to tonic which is usually indicative of the rest being down too.
@Swills (once again): While googling I found these 2 sites that will help you:
http://www.ocssolutions.com/support/traceroute.php
http://kb.iu.edu/data/aihy.html
Good luck!
I figured you ment TRACERT, and I did a trace to mail.stonesunlimited.com and it times out the last 2 hops.
I get to ge1-l3.dreamhost.com and then timeout the last 2 hope…….
Seriously, are these outages really this common? I am new to website hosting and just created a site in the past month. I signed up with dreamhost because of the great deals on the web. Since signing up my site has continually gone down, usually in the evening. I have been patient understanding these things can happen. But, now I am just getting frustrated that it happens two or three times a week for my site. It isn’t even a large site, and I am usually the only visitor at the moment. It is a forum, so how can expect anyone to join if it is continuously down?
It used to be much better than this. There was a time when I’d recommend them to pretty much everyone. However this has changed over the course of the last year or so.
Sorry, guys, but your service is simply terrible.
Today, there were just 83.11% of uptime (3h23min offline until now!) - data obtained from Pingdom.com.
Since 4/9, there were just one day with 100% uptime.
In the sum of last ten days, I just had more than 9 hours of downtime (while my other servers had no more than 15 minutes).
Every day I see server problems in my server.
That is unacceptable!!!
looks like caprisun is down as well.
if someone would let us know what is going on and perhaps estimate an estimated time frame for a solution, we might at least be able to handle all of this down time.
good luck!
@ Ronan
@ Warwell
@ anybody with bad_httpd_conf
If you’re still having trouble with bad_httpd_conf then read http://wiki.dreamhost.com/Bad_httpd_conf
what it basically means is tat the server that your domain points to doesn’t think it’s supposed to be hosting that domain. Generally changing anything in the panel and then changing it back will fix it, but it may take some time to actually show up fixed.
Bob
I’m willing to bet that it happens more than 2-3 times a week for you.
That’s just what you’re catching, unless you already use a website monitoring service and know
thats how many times it goes down.
I”m new here too (little over a month) and since I’ve been here my sites has been unreachable multiple times a day.
For long periods of time. If it isn’t a system wide issue it’s my server having issues.
As I stated above:
If you really want an eye opener go to Montastic.com and sign up your website addresses
and be horrified at how many times a day it is unreachable.
Good luck Bob - I really do hope that things get better for you. ![]()
and everyone else!
My site slow slow slow down again…
@Jeff G: The BBB is NOT a valid measure of how a business such as this ACTUALLY performs, as many people have no means of reporting them, and the BBB has to run like a business, meaning they usually WELCOME any additional streams of money… bribery, anyone?
According to my host tracker, which has been running for 26 days now, I am experiencing 99.65% uptime on server baht in cluster randy. In that time, my panel has not gone down except for scheduled maintenance, nor has my webmail (IMAP, POP3, SMTP have run at 100%). Also, I have host tracker set to refresh once per minute, and many of these downtimes are 1 minute or less - meaning bad connections on individual ISP’s parts.
All in all, I’m very pleased with DreamHost. When my 2-year comes up for renewal in June, I will be keeping my service. It’s better than Simplehost anyway.
What’s happening with Dreamhost right now?! This is so frustrating/unacceptable. I run a business web site and the service has been great from Dreamhost until now. My site has been down on and off all week and now it’s been down for hours. I have customers complaining they can’t make orders and we’re obviously losing business. When will this really be fixed? Really worried about this.
not really a techie here and so also not always knowing what is going on
only noticing lately more outages on “dreamhost” and our site then before
webserver sourpatch all the other stuff not using right now
now today agian out of reach our website for hours :-(((((((((
mail down 5 days, had to bring mail in house because I couldn’t even get a call back (the one a month I paid for).
Terrible service….. Time to start looking for host!
PPC campaign running…………………………..
and I’m losing money……………
aaaaaaargggggggghhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!111
UPDATE TO MY PREVIOUS POST
I noticed something last night that upset me even more so.
My posting above about the 117 emails was way under tallied.
For some reason I thought gmail tallied each email but instead it tallies each set of emails.
Meaning that If I was sent 4 messages that stated my website http://www.domain1.com was down
4 times on a certain day gmail lumps all 4 of those messages as 1.
Therefore the amount of emails I have received in 10 days was actually 192!
telling me that my sites went down and then up.
So, if you figure about half for down and the other half for up.
Down time each time = anywhere between 30mins. to over 2.5 hrs.
that my websites were not reachable.
That’s … approximately [[96 down emails]] in 10 days!!!
6 days i have been down and my business cant take it anymore, i have calling me why they cannot email me. i run an aluminum manufacturing company. I can’t fathom how much email quotes i may have missed. Im leaving dreamhost to go to godaddy…………can i say that?
JT

So far for today:
I got…
[30 separate your website is unreachable emails, from Montastic]
granted I have multiple domains, but it seems like one is
almost always down.
This is really really getting ridiculous and it has been this way for all 11 days I’ve been monitoring my websites.
and the general response is we rebooted the server and have an admin looking into it so it doesn’t happen again.
Yet it still is the same and nothing changes except it’s getting worse.
If you want a good webhost, you have these criteria:
a. cheap.
b. reliable.
c. full-featured.
Pick any two.
Sorry to say this but i have to leave DH behind, we all shouldn’t be just left dangling here with promises that things will be fixed. All of their posts about server issues and what not say they are resolved but they are not. They say there will be down time on april 25th thats 5 days away…..sorry guys the last time i checked the servers are down.
We can’t even get actual status of what is happening. It is not acurate-they say certain servers are down. From reading everyones comments i’d say the whole DH world collapsed. I sent in three critical tickets and told them your hurting everyone including me……hey i tried. I don’t get replies, but hey how can i when my damn email doesn’t work along with everyone elses? You know i really liked DH, i loved my hosting pkg, but i cant afford this long of a down time. Sorry guys!
You don’t know it they, um you know tripped over the power cord and maybe forgot to plug it back in eh?
These are my downtimes stats JUST from today (Friday, April 20)… Almost 2 hours in outages..

10:38 EST April 22 - down yet again. It seems to me it goes down for an hour or more every 5 hours.
But hey. Problem resolved right?
-jeff
11:21:28:-0400*22/Apr/07 I’m seeing the same thing. All my connections end up going to spaceymail-mx2.g.dreamhost.com and timeing out, while telnet hangs after pass, while the connection remains established. I’ve submitted a help request via the ‘contact support’ thingy.
Osc It’s done the exact same test using telnet and I see the same thing. Hangs after PASS.
-jeff
My site is down again, what a surprise. Was running fine yesterday. This problem isn’t resolved.
Mine was down for TWO HOURS this morning… And it’s still very slow now…
@Amanda: The site linked to via your name runs quite fast here.
I also suppose nobody noticed this message under the “Leave a Reply” label: “Comments posted here may not be viewed by DreamHost staff at all. This is not a way to contact DreamHost.”
In other words, this is a place to comment and vent, but certainly not a place to get the help you might need. When will some of you people realize that?
Peace,
Gene
I’m just venting. For what my site is, the service isn’t terrible, but I can’t imagine having a large site with many vistors, with your business relying on it being up all the time.
I just got this on a support ticket.
I’m sorry for the problems you’ve been having with your service.
We’ve been experiencing problems with one of our core filers, as we
mentioned on our status page a couple of days ago:
http://www.dreamhoststatus.com/2007/04/19/downtime-on-spacey-cluster/
We’ve been investigating the issue and have been unable to pinpoint the
cause yet. We are currently in the process of moving stuff off of this
filer to a replacement one that isn’t experiencing these problems.
Unfortunately, it’s a slow process because everytime the filer dies, the
move stops. I checked on your site now and it is coming up with no
problems. Resolving this issue is the main focus of our admin team at
this point and they are doing all they can to fix the problem ASAP. I
apologize again for any inconvenience this causes you. Please let us know
if you need anything else.
>>>@Amanda: The site linked to via your name runs quite fast here.
…..Said FIVE hours after I complained of site slowness.
>>>In other words, this is a place to comment and vent, but certainly not a place to get the help you might need. When will some of you people realize that?
Do you work for Dreamhost? I have been emailing with dreamhost staff daily, usually multiple times daily. I would be glad to send my complaints directly to you though.
@gene-no

This may surprise you to no end, Edgar Allan, did you know that if you call DH’s primary phone line: (213) 947-1032, it references dreamhoststatus.com as the primary method of troubleshooting issues followed by ‘contact support’
pieces, mr. poe ;-P
Peace,
Gene
punkbyte
I got the same exact message as you did.
word for word!

Funny how they claim this is the problem in our support ticket yet the problem is labeled as being resolved.
I don’t think they know what the problem is so they are just sending out cookie cuter replies to people.
Why was this marked as resolved if customer support is saying this is why my websites are going down multiple times a day?

Chai down as well
