DreamHost panel database maintenance
Next Wednesday night, April 25th, we will be performing more maintenance on some of our central databases. This will take the DreamHost Webpanel offline starting at Wed Apr 25 22:00:00 PDT 2007 and potentially extending until Wed Apr 25 23:59:59 PDT 2007. The expected downtime within this window is 30 minutes.
00:15 PDT: New estimate 00:30 PDT for final resolution of the maintenance.

I find I can access it now.Great!
April 19th, 2007 at 1:58 pm
And I find the PANEL run faster now than these days.but my sites going very solwly now.Very strange!
April 19th, 2007 at 2:01 pm
30 min of DH time = 2 days real people time.
I will prepare by sending my reader tin cans and string to use for the remainder of the week.
April 19th, 2007 at 2:07 pm
@Jeff G,I could not see your site here.I’m in China.
April 19th, 2007 at 2:16 pm
yup. back down. was up for 8 minutes there. And boy howdy, were those eight minutes satisfying.
I’ve said it before, I’ll keep saying it: if you ar ein your 97 day money back window - GET YOUR MONEY BACK. DREAMHOST SUCKS.
April 19th, 2007 at 2:23 pm
@dupola: Your sites being slower could be from many factors, from the path of the network from you to the particular server at Dreamhost where your sites are located, to a more localized problem with the webserver, database-server or even a badly written script hogging resources.
You can do traceroutes etc from you to your site(s) and see if there are hops taking a longer time than normal there, to start with. Also, your ISP may not have the best peering outside China or towards the particular ISP that Dreamhost uses to peer with your local ISP.
Hope that helps

Can I get my sites moved to the same server that http://www.dreamhoststatus.com is on? It’s up far more often than any of my sites. Is it hosted somewhere else?
April 19th, 2007 at 3:44 pm
I have a friend in DC who cannot access my site or any other dreamhost hosted site from her Mac. She can access my site and all other dreamhost hosted sites from her PC. This started something this afternoon. It is affecting both Safari and Firefox, and she tried dumping private data and restarting the Mac. None of the dreamhost hosted sites pop an error, they just hang indefinitely.
Any ideas?
April 19th, 2007 at 4:49 pm
Am I the only one who can’t connect to dreamhost.com? I can’t connect to my website, cpanel, or dreamhost.
April 19th, 2007 at 5:11 pm
“Resolved: YES” is what the status pages says.
Somehow, I thought that “Resolved: YES” would mean that the problems are solved and the servers working properly. I guess I don’t understand the terminology.
April 19th, 2007 at 6:26 pm
Guys… What this message indicates is an activity that won’t take place for 6 more days. If you’re experiencing problems now, unless you’re precognitive, you might want to start a trouble ticket to figure out what those problems are –cause they ain’t this one, at least not yet.
April 19th, 2007 at 6:57 pm
All my sites are down and so is my web panel! So how are we suppose to contact dreamhost about this if we can not get to our webpanel? I already tried emaling them and it came back to me
We’re sorry.. your email was unable to be processed by our automatic support system, and so is being returned to you.

@DebK: I have had no problems whatever this evening with either the control panel or my sites. And yours opens just fine, at least as of 8:15 PM.
Peace,
Gene
April 19th, 2007 at 7:20 pm
I am glad someone can get to my one site.
I can get to any other site in my bookmarks but my own..
I just tried again and tried my webpanel and still can not get in there… Your on the west coast? As t is 11:17 p.m.. right now on the east coast.
I just tried another site that I know is hosted through dreamhost www.graphicbuds.com and can not get to them either.
I just tried dreamhost.com and can not get to theirs… maybe something down between me and dreamhost? Not sure..
April 19th, 2007 at 7:21 pm
@DebK - your site loads fine for me as well (10:20PM CST). It sounds like maybe you have a bad route to DreamHost, in which case I *strongly* recommend contacting your ISP to have them fix it.
Either that, or if you’re able to, changing your DNS servers could also potentially resolve your problem even faster
And yes, you can only file a ticket from the control panel. Sending in an email without a (valid) ticket number will always bounce back.
April 19th, 2007 at 7:25 pm
Everything’s rockin’ and rollin’ Deb. Have you tried rebooting your machine just to reset things one last time? (I know you hear this all the time but with billions of bytes in a PC sometimes a bad thing happens in a cache and then some things don’t work.
Honest, we’re not lying to you.
PS. I’ve been frustrated by not being able to open a ticket by email or some other process. It’s hard to report that the panel is down when the panel is down.
April 19th, 2007 at 7:35 pm
Yep.. I even rebooted my modem.. started up my laptop to see if my desktop was the problem… I am with comcast.
I trust you all… I am going to go to bed.. and see if I can get to things in the morning.
Thanks everyone!
Deb

BTW, not all email to support@dreamhost.com will bounce. If you use the email address registered with dreamhost, it will allow you to post a new support ticket without logging into the panel. However, the panel has been running fine, and this is a non-event, as this activity still will not occur for another 5 days.
April 20th, 2007 at 7:36 am
DebK, I had a similar problem. For hours last night I couldn’t connect to any of my sites nor the panel. Come this morning it was fixed, so it may have been a routing problem here on the east coast.
April 20th, 2007 at 9:50 am
Right now I can not access any of my sites, even the admin panel is down, and this is not the first time. I though dreamhost could be the solution to my hosting problems but they have becomen a problem themselves. I’m very angry with the service they are providing.
April 20th, 2007 at 10:23 am
Henry: I can connect to your web site ok.
April 20th, 2007 at 10:24 am
@Henry: No problems with your site, or the one linked to your name right now. I have not had any problems with the control panel today, and I’ve been on it several times.
Peace,
Gene
April 20th, 2007 at 11:44 am
When Dreamhost says NEXT WEEK they mean NEXT WEEK not today. If your panel’s not working don’t whine here, FILE A FRICKIN TICKET and mark it as urgent.
April 20th, 2007 at 12:15 pm
The uptime rate it is a shame
April 20th, 2007 at 12:17 pm
well, the php doesnt work at my web…
April 20th, 2007 at 6:05 pm
It does now. Healed!
April 21st, 2007 at 6:33 am
@Gene
As usual it is clean gene to the rescue of the huddled DH masses with his usual DH-partisan spin; yea, everything is peechy keen in Gene-no land…it’s too bad this author/affiliatewhore spends soo much time putting out fires on the DH status blog - to think, we could be missing out on your next best-seller :p
-another apologist bites the dust!
April 21st, 2007 at 6:37 am
@Dave
or shall I say, Mr. Brainiac - if the webpanel is down, princess, how do you expect these folks to file a ’support ticket’ - lemme guess, osmosis? telekenisis? oh and I am sure your sure-fire method would be e-mail and that would be the answer of someone that has a thorough MIS-understanding of how things work in networks - do us all a favor and crawl back under that 200 hit per month site of yours :p
-another apologist bites the dust!
April 21st, 2007 at 6:53 am
@Dave… maybe if I could of gotten to my web panel that night or their own web site I would have submitted a frickin ticket (as you call it) If you would have read my first post you would have seen that! And I did try to email support with the email that I have in my settings at dreamhost and I got that one back… so let’s see. I could not get to their site nor my web panel, I could NOT email them with the correct email it bounced back at me, they do not have a PHONE NUMBER to call them when there is trouble. So what I am suppose to do sit on my butt and wait until the problems fixes itself? Cause there is NO other way to contact dreamhost.
My first post was not nasty.. it was just asking a question… and alot of nice people answered. Did I post a rpley being nasty? No… I stated I would go to bed and get up the next morning and see if things fix themself out on there own.. and they did.
In the last 6 months or so… that dreamhost has had their ups and downs.. I have posted on here once asking what was going on… I pay my bill each month.. and I do not complain when they go down. I sit and wait.. Shit happens.. and I understand that.
I do not have my business site on dreamhost so I do not complain.. I host my business site with someone else that does have a 99% uptime.
You need to take a chill pill Dave.
Have a good weekend!
@BrainB.. I was thinking the same thing that it was a routing problem here on the east coast to… cause all is well and was the next morning.
@Matt Van Dusen — I did use my email address that I have registered with dreamhost and it still bounce back at me
And thank you to those that did reply to me and that was nice about it tryng to hep someone else out… Have a good weekend!

@Deb
I am happy to hear your website is back in order!
I am unsure why you chose to protect your images with the ‘no right click’ script. Especially since the java pop-ups still have right click enabled…the watermark is probably a safer bet…
I was able to save: scrapbook0006_text0001.jpg and dk_hallowween_frames_001.jpg (although the watermark made most of these frames unusable and safe)….just an FYI - good work, though! You really have a knack for graphic arts
April 21st, 2007 at 1:00 pm
@DebK: I have my business sites hosted on DreamHost and I do get greater than 99% uptime. It’s 99.7 in the last 46 or so days, including a couple of major outages.
Peace,
Gene
April 21st, 2007 at 3:08 pm
@Gene.. I ment to say that I do not have my BIG clients on dreamhost cause I would have lost them with the down time that dreamhost was having a couple of months ago… and I only stated that… to the people that I have seen on here complaining to others about “Go host someone else” if you want 99% uptime as dreamhost does not state that they are.
I sit here and read all these when dreamhost was/is down. And really I have to laugh at some of them. Not the ones coming in here complaining, or asking for help but the ones that type all in CAPS and state the bull about go someone else if you want better service. The ones that just want to start some trouble.
I was not trying to put dreamhost down…
Believe me, if I did not like their service I would not be here… and I have been with them for a little over a 1 1/2 years now might even be 2 years now…. And I have many other site hosted with them.

Some clusters are more reliable than others - the drinks cluster has had way too many issues recently. But it could happen to any cluster at any time.
April 22nd, 2007 at 12:41 am
Something terribly wrong with the panel. I can log in, any Ideas?
April 22nd, 2007 at 12:49 am
Panel is still down. What’s up?
April 22nd, 2007 at 5:09 am
I can login but the panel says my account is ‘pending approval’ and doesn’t show my domains and hosted site. Is anyone else experiencing this?
April 22nd, 2007 at 6:27 am
I am not having any problems with my web panel today.
April 22nd, 2007 at 10:16 am
Why is the web panel running so slowwwwwwwwwwwwwww???? It is absolutely maddening! It certainly is not April 25th - well, at least where I live *lol* so what gives?

Hope the maintenance is smooth
April 23rd, 2007 at 12:53 pm
For the record, in the last month, I have had a 98.64% uptime. Most of the downtimes lasted less than 10 minutes, and most of those recorded were connection errors. I’m sure that number will continue to improve - but for now, it’s fairly fantastic. Of course, as “why” said in his last post, it really does matter as to which cluster you’re on. My server (baht) is in the Randy cluster, which may be one of the most stable in the company. So, if you are REALLY having problems, you could always contact support and ask them to move you onto another machine, either in the same cluster (sometimes it really is just your machine) or to another cluster.
April 25th, 2007 at 6:31 pm
99.72% uptime in the last 46 days, covering four sites (four servers, etc.).
Peace,
Gene

1:30a PDT and panel not back up(for me)? Lord help me…
April 26th, 2007 at 4:37 am
Maybe a panel issue caused my dilemma. I’ve been in the throes of this for 2 1/2 days now, no resolution, my main web store (and all others) dysfunctional.
I’ve narrowed it down to a mySQL bug, brought about because of a BUG in the dreamhost panel software.
This bug resulted in loss of all my hosting information for that one domain. I’ve rebuild almost all of it, with the exception of one little problem. Here’s the latest.
I think the data base settings are corrupted.
I believe that the mySQL software is updating pointers when info is deleted.
BUT I believe that the actual data cannot be written when data changes or is
added. Because I’m not getting write errors, but no NEW data is saved.
This is a mySQL bug - and it’s a nasty one.
Does anyone know who I can contact about this? Support was very helpful in peeling the onion until I got into the db realm. I haven’t heard anything from them for almost 24 hours.
