Brief network downtime around 3:30PM PDT

Updated: There was a little delay getting started, but after everything was ready, the switchover went very well. With the exception of a completely separate (and thankfully smaller) outage caused by a loose network cable, the planned work was completed with just a few seconds of downtime.

At approximately 3:30PM PDT this afternoon, we’ll be taking a small portion of our network offline so we can fix some packet loss issues that our provider has been unable to rectify. Everything will be pre-configured, so downtime should be less than 30 seconds.

Happy DreamHost Network Team!

I imagine this little downtime is why i am getting webmail error:

    “ERROR:
ERROR: Connection dropped by IMAP server.
Query: FETCH 1:* (FLAGS UID RFC822.SIZE INTERNALDATE BODY.PEEK[HEADER.FIELDS (Date To Cc From Subject X-Priority Importance Priority Content-Type)])

    ??

tis all good….means I get to take a break.

    Pandrake Says:

Well, my email is “down” in a real funny way. I noticed my POP checker wasn’t able to check, so I tried going to webmail - it said my username is unknown or password incorrect.

It said that several times. With several different accounts.

Funny thing is that 1) the dreamhost panel lists those accounts as active and with the password I tried, and 2) I can log onto mailboxes.domain.com with the account password just fine. Only thing blocked is POP (dunno about SMTP).

  48. 48
    Pandrake Says:

Ooop! And just after I posted that my POP was pooped my POP checker started popping like jiffy!

Appears to have been a prolonged reboot, or “where does this cable go” moments or something.

    LOL! Dreamhost still rocks!

  49. 49
    PeteT Says:

Guys… You’re complaining about an outtage thats been well planned…. Have you even placed a ticket on your problems? Just putting it into the panel for an outtage check doesn’t count. Did you file a ticket with enough information to actually get the thing fixed?

Dreamhost is the expert on running their network and their servers - not running your applications. So give them the info they need to help you out…

And if you don’t want to give them a chance - Why not start giving RackSpace $1900 a month for a server… And you too with get FANATICAL support… Only you’ll be BROKE!

Thanks for taking such great care of us, DreamHost! I’ve been with bad hosts and it’s dreamhost who always gets things done!
