Again and again and again in the last week my website is down. MSQL down, the hole website down, again MSQL down and then again the hole website. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr…….

    :-(

  2. Jue Says:

We’ve been experiencing batches of extreme slowness on our phpbb and gallery. The entire site is down now.

  3. Dash Says:

Same here.. What the heck is up with this??

    HELP PLEASE ! Acckkk…

  4. Gregg Lain Says:

I think this is why some php programs I have come across use flat files - no database issues….

  5. bassboyz Says:

ok, spacey is my email server but not my website and mysql server and my site is down so… fresca and fido will fall too because I cant access my site…

  6. jonathan cross Says:

    martinellis server is out too.

Same error for Perl and PHP scripts on multiple domains.

  7. Gabriel Says:

The same to me. Capuccino is up and… my site is down! 4 times in a month. How can I explain that to my clients? Same to all of you?

  8. glj12 Says:

Same for Horchata…. site is down.

  9. Jue Says:

How do server providers such as dreamhost compensate for such downtime? We are expecting a lot of traffic to our site this week due to news releases, now the site is down.

    I hate shared servers!

  10. Adnan Says:

My site Linkspub.com is down now. What’s a spacey cluster? I wish you guys would consider offering vps or some type of low range dedicated solution.

  11. Jue Says:

My site is now back up.

  12. bassboyz Says:

    bassboyz.net online again.

@Jue I dont know if they compensate but it will be nice…

  13. why Says:

They do offer dedicated solutions - they’re just not $8/mo.

To find out what “cluster” you’re on, log into the panel and select “Account Status” in the top right. A drop down will show you the “Your email server” entry is your “cluster”.

Jue - no. But you do have comfort knowing that the guys at DH hate downtime as much as you do - possibly even more. You might be concerned with 4-6 machines while they’re trying to deal with thousands.

  14. .m Says:

Good job resolving the issues timeously…

    Thanks DH

  15. Navjot Singh Says:

One of my site http://www.talksmf.com is still down. :(

  16. Dash Says:

Well, I’m happy for the rest of you guys, but most of my sites are still down is anyone else still having problems?

  17. Gyn Says:

Every day it’s a new problem.

  18. Mousee Says:

@Dash - ya, my site is next to impossible to load currently and download speeds (from dads) are still around

  19. Mary Says:

My sites are back up now. Almost 3 hours of downtime…

  20. Dash Says:

Am I the only one still down?? Is everyone else here up and running now?

  21. Mousee Says:

My site is functioning normally now as well.
Nice and fast - good deal! :)

  22. Dash Says:

    Are you running any PHP?

  23. e Says:

    My site up. thx dh.

  24. Mousee Says:

@Dash - ya my site uses a custom install of PHP5 running FCGI. And as it’s entirely coded in PHP, it heavily relies on it :)

  25. Dash Says:

Ok.. Thanks.. Back up and running again it seems.

  26. Longdogs Says:

One of my websites has been down at least once a day for the last two weeks, yet I’ve had no downtime on any of the others, all hosted on the same server. I’m hosted on Fuze.

  27. WebDirectory Says:

My site, http://www.ultraorganizer.com works fine … for now :D

  28. Diogenes Says:

And here we go again… my site is still slow.

  29. Adnan Says:

    Thanks why.

I’ll look up the cluster thing later on.

Your right about DH hating downtime as well and I don’t think in a shared environment, it can be avoided.

I just wish, DH would offer like vps or like a low range dedicated server, less then the one which they have right now which is around $400 p/month.

    Something in the range of $20 - $80 p/month.

  30. brandon Says:

is it just me, or has spacey been having a ton of probems lately?

  31. RyanB Says:

I am on spacey. I am able to view my sites, but can’t log into the admin panel.

  32. Rudegrl Says:

I have no idea if our website is in the ’spacey’ cluster, but it has been down now several times today & yesterday. When it is up it have been periodically very slow. This is our companies primary website, and we do e-commerce through it. This lost time = lost money for us! Hopefully compensation will be offered.

I agree with everyone above requesting a reasonaly priced, dedicated solution.

  33. Vinic Says:

You guys have no idea how a dedicated server works and how much it costs, do you.

  34. red Says:

MySQL is still down for me.

  35. Explorering Blogosphere Says:

My sites are working fine :-)

  36. James Says:

My sites are back up… I was confused when the host-tracker came back with rediculous downtime reportings - thanks for giving us updates DH!

  37. Henrik Says:

Dedicated servers / VPS would end up with you paying much more per month if you want the same resources as you get from a shared account.

You also need to maintain your server, which would cost you even more if you don’t know how to do this on your own. With shared account you don’t have to do anything when it comes to system-maintenance, but with the downside that you share resources with 100eds and sometimes 1000ands of other customers.

If you make in the range of over 200 USD per month from your site, you better look for a dedicated solution instead of hosting your resources on a shared account, as downtime and slow performance would cost you much more than if you’re under that revenue limit.

  38. Gene Steinberg Says:

@Henrik: Your math is off. With only $200 a month income from a site, you’d throw all or most of it away and then some to get a quality dedicated solution. In other words, it doesn’t make any sense. A good shared solution with proper network maintenance should get you good performance most times. A customer isn’t going to care if a site takes a second or two longer to load, and a dedicated server can go down too from time to time.

Now if you were making $2,000 per month, then it might make sense and maybe not even then. Talk to your accountant.

    Peace,
    Gene

  39. Pratham Kumar Says:

    c’mon dreamhost … what’s going on?

  40. jricbt Says:

    Again site is down.

    Again I cannot work.

    Again I am losing money.

    Thanks dreamhost.

  41. Navjot Singh Says:

Yeah again all my sites are down. This is not fair….even when you quote the issue as being resolved…it still is down. I wanna cry. :((

  42. Shawn Says:

Geez! What gives?!? PHP is flaked again.. :( Straight HTML pages are working but PHP gives internal server errors… :(

  43. Aidan Says:

Wow, I have 6 sites with dreamhost and they all go down almost every day, for about an hour per day on average.

I suggest you guys use http://montastic.com to check the uptime of your own websites.

You’ll see that no other host (1and1.com) etc. has anywhere as near as much downtime.

I think dreamhost hosting should strictly be used for your test sites.

  44. Aidan Says:

    It’s time to leave dreamhost.

  45. Gene Steinberg Says:

@Aidan: If your site is going down an hour a day, you are having an unusual problem. Have you asked customer support for help?

As to an uptime tracking service, try http://www.host-tracker.com. They are far more comprehensive and have far more test sites (around the world in fact). Using that service on four sites that I run, we have 99.76% uptime as of this writing. This is not as good as I’d like it, but it is not a situation of going down one hour a day by any means.

1and1? Please, don’t make me laugh. They may have good uptime, but their customer support sucks. Do a search of their reputation and you’ll see what I mean.

    Peace,
    Gene

  46. Mary Says:

MY SITES ARE DOWN. Well they load very slowly. Others on spacay cluster experincing the same? I cant FTP or SSH either.

I did a traceroute and its looks right.

I submitted a ticket, but curios to know if others are experincing problems.

  47. Alan Says:

Anyone on CupCake server facing downtime?

A ticket was submitted but to no avail and response…

What in the world is going on!!!

  48. Luca Beltrame Says:

@Gene: Checked host-tracker out, however,it seems to use “invalid” ways to check for uptime as my spam detection system running on the host blocks (and so all requests fail with 403).

  49. James Says:

At luca: It’s still connecting to your server, though. And if it can establish a HTTP connection to your server, then the problem is elsewhere.

  50. cnc137 Says:

Our test site that I am working on is on the “schweppes” server in the “spacey” cluster using the “barkley” MySQL server and it has been slow loading for at least a month. Sometimes it works fine, but a lot of times it is very very slow loading. Pages seem to take 30 seconds to a minute to load after clicking the link. I have the same test site setup on our current host for testing and it is a lot more responsive and faster loading than the DreamHost server.

We were planning on moving our site to DreamHost, since our current host is having server issues now and then and support is not good, but now I am worried about making the switch to DreamHost, since I don’t think our visitors will like waiting so long for pages to load. :(

When I was researching new web hosting companies I talked with a few people in the industry and they recommended either DreamHost of Media Temple ( http://www.mediatemple.net/ ). I am beginning to think we should’ve gone with the Media Temple Grid-Server solution instead of DreamHost. We chose DreamHost because of the extra disk space and bandwidth for less money, but if that means really slow access, then I don’t think we will be happy.

Does anyone have any experience with Media Temple Grid-Server hosting? Is it any better? I think (mt) got the MySQL problems fixed now, so should we consider switching to them and dropping DreamHost?

I like DreamHost and there services, but we can’t have a site that is so slow that people don’t want to visit. We plan on having commenting on top of our active forums once we roll out the new site and if it is slow then nobody will want to visit or reply.

I submitted a support ticket to DreamHost on Saturday and they told me that there was nothing that they could see wrong with the server at that time and that they would consider moving our site once we launched if we still noticed the slowness. I was hoping they would fix the problem before we launched not after. If it is slow right now with only me looking at it then what is it going to be like when we have 50+ users online at the same time and the search engines indexing it and people downloading our RSS feeds and other thing? I would rather have a fast and smooth running site before launch not after. :(

    So…

Should we stick with DreamHost and hope they fix this or consider moving to Media Temple or somewhere else?

    What do you guys think?

  51. Cristiano Betta Says:

Ahh, come ON! This is the 3rd time in 3 days the Spacey cluster (sunnyd machine) is not available. Speeds are slow ALL the time and uptime is hilarious. I know we didn’t sign a contract for any uptime, but this is just starting to become annoying.

  52. Mary Says:

My sites are down. Again. This time with the 500 error.

  53. Mary Says:

cnc137 : Now you mention mediatemple, what about their Dedicated Virtual hosting ? Anyone else who checked it out or know people who does?

  54. Vinny Says:

I’m down, too. First an NFS error wiped all my files last week and now this happens right before I go out of office to present.

    -s-i-g-h-

  55. cnc137 Says:

I just check our test site on DreamHost versus our test site on our current host (we need to move off of it) and the average response time is as follows for the main page based on WordPress with the same template:

    ::::::: Current Host :::::::

Average Response Time = 0.97 sec
Maximum Response Time = 2.36 sec
Minimum Response Time = 0.51 sec
    Average Kb/sec = 40.17

    ::::::: DreamHost - 1st Test :::::::

Average Response Time = 6.30 sec
Maximum Response Time = 13.40 sec
Minimum Response Time = 2.50 sec
    Average Kb/sec = 6.18

    ::::::: DreamHost - 2nd Test :::::::

Average Response Time = 26.36 sec
Maximum Response Time = 40.25 sec
Minimum Response Time = 10.37 sec
    Average Kb/sec = 1.48

I used http://host-tracker.com as mentioned above for all these test. As you can see, the DreamHost server has very slow access, especially during the 2nd test. These speeds make our T1 connect here at the office feel like I am on 56k dial-up. These access speeds need to be fixed or I can see a lot of people moving to a new hosting company.

I really want to stay with DreamHost, but if the speeds don’t increase then I think we will be trying (mt) soon, so we can cancel our DreamHost before our 97 days are up.

  56. Bob Says:

I’m on tampico and currently server loads are in excess of 100 at times! Is anyone else having this happen?

  57. Vinny Says:

    Monster’s load average is SCARY!

    top - 09:13:33 up 3 days, 13:47, 11 users, load average: 341.29, 556.88, 606.34

  58. Bob Says:

Wow Vinny. How can a sever run with that kind of load? My loads seem to swing around all over the place as well. In the last hour they have been as high as 118 and as low as 5. What explains such quick, large swings?

  59. Vinny Says:

I’m thinking startup…I couldn’t ssh into it at all for awhile and that was what I got when I finally gained access.

    Here it is now…coming down!

    top - 09:28:17 up 3 days, 14:02, 13 users, load average: 3.61, 32.74, 237.06

  60. James Printer Says:

    mt is cack

  61. Mary Says:

James Printer: Define “mt is cack”

Vinny: I think High load (also) happends when the NFS server is overloaded / unreachable

  62. Gene Steinberg Says:

@cnc137: MediaTemple’s grid server solution is notorious for being slow, untested. There are lots of shared hosting companies out there, but that’s not an alternative you’d want to consider.

    Peace,
    Gene

  63. Omanero Says:

My site is down for the fourth time in the last six days! :(

  64. Will Barden Says:

I’ve got email on spacey, mysql on marmduke. Uptime has been poor for a while now. Firefox connects.. then hangs, waiting for a response. I know DH is cheap, but I’m getting fed up of this.

  65. cnc137 Says:

Here is the Urban Dictionary definition of the word “cack” as referred to in James Printer’s post (I had to look it up. :P ):

    http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=cack

James, can you go into more detail on why (mt) sucks?

I thought (mt) fixed their issues in March when they went to the MySQL database containers???

I would like to stay with DreamHost and not have to move the WordPress, Invision Power Board, and Gallery2 software and databases again, but I don’t want to roll out a new design of our website with new features, a new layout, and new hosting company that ends up being 20X slower than our current host. Our visitors will wonder why we bothered to switch anything. Usually you change things to make them better and to offer more features. Our site will offer more features that I hope people will like once it is relaunched, but if the DreamHost hosting is slow as all heck, then why will anyone care to visit. :(

  66. MaBi Says:

cnc137, I have experienced exactly the same problem: a general slowness, sometimes it works fine but often it takes anything between 5 and 60 seconds to load a page. I’m on dreamhost since last november and initially it was good, the problems started a few weeks ago. I think the problem is not much on the web servers but on the file-server we all have in common (spacey in our case). I realize this can happen, but a month is a long time :-(. The only thing keeping me from moving elsewhere is that I strongly suspect that wherever I go I will have similar problems. I came to DH after a really bad experience on another host and I don’t want to spend my time hopping from an host to another. Some kind of dedicating hosting is probably the only solution but I have a free site which doesn’t generate any income so I can’t afford it. I thought that in 2007 we could finally have affordable and reliable hosting, but it seems that we are not there yet :-(. And yes, my site is down again now, but no point in submitting a ticket: it will be ok later when support will check and will reply that they couldn’t find anything wrong :-(

  67. Zac Says:

Site is down …. Whats up …. no email … HELP!

  68. Bob Says:

HaHa MaBi. That always happens to me. It takes support hours and hours to reply, and then they simply reply, “Your site appears to be loading fine now. Let us know if you have any more problems.” As if. Where were you when it wasn’t loading for an hour.

  69. Jim Says:

It appears DH is having MySQL problem again. 2 of my sites are down at the moment.

  70. Angry Dog Says:

My sites are up but some of the DB content is slow to respond, although it is responding eventually…

  71. Angry Dog Says:

Sorry, Rintintin is MySQL server, Spacey is email and that seems fine. Evian web server.

  72. jorge Says:

    this is wack.

  73. dani Says:

what useless comments you guys leave, this blog is not to contact dreamhost or tell them something, open a damn support ticket for that. isn’t the big text at the top of this page a big enough indicator?

  74. Gene Steinberg Says:

@MaBi: Yes, it does make sense to issue a support ticket. Sometimes problems aren’t apparent until they check the server logs. What you should do, if this is an ongoing problem is to indicate in your email when they happen and the specific problems, and ask them to consult the server logs so they can see what happened at those points in time. That way they can fix the problem. Without the history, it could be a one-time thing. You see, sites will sometimes run slow, and not necessarily because of the host. It could be your ISP, or somewhere in between.

One way, folks to get faster and safer Internet is to change your ISP’s DNS settings to the ones at http://www.opendns.com. They’ve been written up in The New York Times and lots of tech magazines, and they deliver faster DNS performance, so your sites come up quicker, and they also offer shortcuts and phishing protection.

    Peace,
    Gene

  75. Cristiano Betta Says:

    GRRRRR

  76. alex Says:

    down again.. blah

  77. Pissed Says:

This is INSANE….3 days in a row with over an hour of downtime. Get it together guys, or you will soon be out of business…

  78. Frank Says:

Same shit as the past few weeks, mysql is up at phpmyadmin panel. I can load any non php file just fine but none of my php files actually load.

    FIX IT FFS!

I’m gonna move to another host if this isn’t resolved soon.

  79. Q77 Says:

Same ol’ same ol’ ….. My webbie goes down every few days. What a joke.

  80. Gene Steinberg Says:

@Frank: And what did DreamHost say about your poblem? Or did you ever report it?

Clearly it’s not a normal situation.

    Peace,
    Gene

  81. Cristiano betta Says:

Very nice, writting a wordpress post, now I have to keep it open in FF for as long as dreamhost is down… again (2nd time today!)

  82. Pissed Says:

ITS DOWN AGAIN AFTER BEING UP FOR 11 MINUTES…..what the hell you guys? That’s it, I am moving to a new host, I have had it with you people. This is crap.

  83. Jon Says:

Hey could some kind person please explain a question for me as I’m not really a server/network guy… If my email server is ‘Spacey’ does that mean it is also my file server? My web server is ‘Punch’ but I’m getting the same problems as everyone else so I’m guessing Spacey is the problem. My sites go down without an error and flat HTML files work - I just get a ‘loading hang’ with no response for PHP pages. What does Spacey do that causes the PHP pages to hang?

  84. Q77 Says:

Spacey, punch, doesnt matter much I guess, if one is up,the other is down. Just work quickly on your site when it works, so you wont be stuck half way when it goes down again. After a few weeks you get used to it… A bit.

  85. Gene Steinberg Says:

I find it interesting that few are responding to the question I asked. If you’re having all these problems (and my sites are on the Spacey cluster with almost non-existent issues), why aren’t you reporting them with a customer service ticket? And if you did, what sort of responses did you get? If the problems are ongoing, did you remind them of that?

Just curious, that’s all. After all, nothing is going to get solved here.

    Peace,
    Gene

  86. Pissed Says:

    Gene

I get the same response every time…”it looks like it works fine now, carry on”….bullsh#t…thats not an answer and I am tired of the glibness. I put in a support ticket every single day with this company, and I am now on the phone with another host to get my sites off of Dreamhost.

Every time I tell them “this happened yesterday too”…they say, yea, its a server issue. i ask to be moved to a new one, they say it wont make things better. See ya later, thinking of buying the domain dontusedreamhostcausetheysuck.com.

  87. Eddie Says:

Yes, we are on gingerale and seem to be extremely slow.

    Eddie

  88. cnc137 Says:

    Gene,

I submitted a support ticket on Saturday telling DreamHost about the slowness of my site over the last month or two and received this reply:

    “Hello,

Well right now the apache service that you’re on isn’t full at all, so
there shouldn’t be any issues due to overloading. When you make the
forum public, you’ll be getting a more hits, which at that time, will
allow us to move you to an empty apache allowing for more people to be on
at the same time with less slow down. If we can see more hits to the
site, then we’ll have to ability to move you, pretty much.

    Thanks!
    DreamHost”

This wasn’t the response I was looking for and if the site is slow now with only me and few other people visiting it on and off the what will it be like when more people start hitting it. When we launch and a lot of people are hitting it all day long then I fear it will be even worse. I would like to get this slowness problem fixed before we launch the redesign of our site instead of waiting until launch, finding out it is dog slow, having our members frustrated, and then maybe moving us to a faster server to solve the problem.

I also replied to that message on Saturday with more details and replied again today with the details I mentioned above about the speed of the response of the server. I have not received a response since the one above on Saturday. :(

  89. James Says:

thinking of buying the domain dontusedreamhostcausetheysuck.com.

Just what the internet needs. Another website from someone else who isn’t quite fulfilled by complaining on a blog that’s not actually supposed to provide any kind of result from your complaining. Brilliant.

  90. Gene Steinberg Says:

@cnc137: The site linked to your name responds quite quickly. Is there another I can check?

    Peace,
    Gene

  91. cnc137 Says:

The site in my name is to our current site on our current hosting company’s server. We need to move from them, since we are running out of space and bandwidth and their support has not been very good lately. There server has been filling up too and going down on and offline, but when it is up it is fast. The redesign of our site has not been made public yet, so I am reluctant to give you the URL, but believe me, it is a lot slower than the current site you are seeing when you click my name. I have told DreamHost the URL for testing, but I really don’t want to post it here for the world to see yet. Sorry and I hope you understand.

  92. Gene Steinberg Says:

@cnc137: Tell you what: Go to the site linked to my name, and click on the Contact Us link. You can then write me a note and send me the test URL, if you wish. That letter goes directly to me, personally. Nobody will see it. OK?

    Peace,
    Gene

  93. Siddharth Menon Says:

    What ? Issure resolved ?

Its not true .. I am getting Server space full every where .. Not able to upload anything over FTP, websitesite attachment !!

Just few hrs back when I check the sever was using 75% capacity and now its 100% .. 480GB usage.

  94. Siddharth Menon Says:

Here is more details on my sever.

Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
    10.3.45.10:/vol/boot/spacey/mike
    480G 480G 0 100% /home/.mike

  95. Chris Smith Says:

Anyone else unable to get to anything?

  96. Frank Says:

    Gene,

I never got a really good reply from support, it was always related to stuff posted here according to support. If it wasn’t then the site was running fine now, ‘let me know if you have any more problems’.

Right now i got a email it has to do with googlebot overloading my site (which sounds absurd) but i did the fixes he told me (putting robots.txt files in the appropriate folder).

  97. Bob Says:

My site has taken another dump this week. Why is the spacey cluster so buggy?

  98. Jue Says:

I am now getting internal server errors on my php. Is there are new issue?

Also, I appreciate that DH is trying to work on thousands of machines, but i get thousands of visitors to my site weekly, so I depend on you guys to keep the site up, and downtime down! :)

    Anyone else having issues today?

  99. Jue Says:

Site is still down, and I can’t even login to the control panel!!!!!!!!

  100. Gene Steinberg Says:

I am now getting internal server errors on my php. Is there are new issue?

Also, I appreciate that DH is trying to work on thousands of machines, but i get thousands of visitors to my site weekly, so I depend on you guys to keep the site up, and downtime down! :)

    Anyone else having issues today?

Internal Server Errors generally relate to something specific to your site, rather than the server in general. Maybe your site has a coding problem, or is using too many resources? What is DH telling you about this? You did file a support request, right/ I get thousands of visitors to my sites every day, so I’m especially concerned when things go wrong, but that doesn’t happen too often.

    Gene,

Thanks for the recommended site about uptime monitoring. I’ll check it out.

1and1.com may not have good customer service, but my sites on 1and1 are making money. Anyway, I haven’t had to use their customer service at all.

Great customer service with non-working servers don’t pay the bills. I’m not paying Dreamhost for good customer service, I’m paying them to host my sites.

Anyway, I know DH doesn’t read these posts. I’m just venting cuz I’m so annoyed.

But it’s start a big part of the picture, because there will come a time, almost inevitably, where you will need good customer service to resolve a problem. And that’s where a company such as 1and1 falls down, even if they offer good uptime and such.

I almost went there — but their limitation of 100MB for a MySQL database, with no upgrade option, was the deal-breaker for me.

    Peace,

Gene: Internal Server Errors happends when the PHP fails on the servers. I experinced the errors lately. I think many others using PHP scripts and are on the Spacey cluster is experincing the same error. Its nothing to do with their php scripts.

    Peace,
    Gene

Actually my math isn’t “off” at all. If one’s having a raw income starting at 200 USD and above, a cheap dedicated could be a good option, as downtime would cost much more than if you have a 30 USD a month project running. I know, 200 USD is peanuts, however it is still a breaking point to when you should start looking at a dedicated solution.

If you have a PPC-based income, uptime is especially important as the slightest downtime may cost you SEO points / ranking positions over at Google&co, and you also lose the “networking” effect amongst your visitors (if you have a couple of thousand unique per month you don’t want to be known as “the site that goes down now and then”).

There are many factors, which I think you have missed here.

As a side-note: Are you let back in on WHT yet?
