@Henrik: Your math is off. With only $200 a month income from a site, you’d throw all or most of it away and then some to get a quality dedicated solution. In other words, it doesn’t make any sense. A good shared solution with proper network maintenance should get you good performance most times. A customer isn’t going to care if a site takes a second or two longer to load, and a dedicated server can go down too from time to time.

Now if you were making $2,000 per month, then it might make sense and maybe not even then. Talk to your accountant.

Peace,
Gene

Actually my math isn't "off" at all. If one's having a raw income starting at 200 USD and above, a cheap dedicated could be a good option, as downtime would cost much more than if you have a 30 USD a month project running. I know, 200 USD is peanuts, however it is still a breaking point to when you should start looking at a dedicated solution.

If you have a PPC-based income, uptime is especially important as the slightest downtime may cost you SEO points / ranking positions over at Google&co, and you also lose the "networking" effect amongst your visitors (if you have a couple of thousand unique per month you don't want to be known as "the site that goes down now and then").

There are many factors, which I think you have missed here.

As a side-note: Are you let back in on WHT yet?

Gene: Internal Server Errors happends when the PHP fails on the servers. I experinced the errors lately. I think many others using PHP scripts and are on the Spacey cluster is experincing the same error. Its nothing to do with their php scripts.

<blockquote>Great customer service with non-working servers don’t pay the bills. I’m not paying Dreamhost for good customer service, I’m paying them to host my sites.</blockquote>

But it's start a big part of the picture, because there will come a time, almost inevitably, where you will need good customer service to resolve a problem. And that's where a company such as 1and1 falls down, even if they offer good uptime and such.

I almost went there -- but their limitation of 100MB for a MySQL database, with no upgrade option, was the deal-breaker for me.

Peace,

Gene,

Thanks for the recommended site about uptime monitoring. I'll check it out.

1and1.com may not have good customer service, but my sites on 1and1 are making money. Anyway, I haven't had to use their customer service at all.

Anyway, I know DH doesn't read these posts. I'm just venting cuz I'm so annoyed.

<blockquote>I am now getting internal server errors on my php. Is there are new issue?

Also, I appreciate that DH is trying to work on thousands of machines, but i get thousands of visitors to my site weekly, so I depend on you guys to keep the site up, and downtime down! :)

Anyone else having issues today? </blockquote>

Internal Server Errors generally relate to something specific to your site, rather than the server in general. Maybe your site has a coding problem, or is using too many resources? What is DH telling you about this? You did file a support request, right/ I get thousands of visitors to my sites every day, so I'm especially concerned when things go wrong, but that doesn't happen too often.

Peace,
Gene

Gene,

I never got a really good reply from support, it was always related to stuff posted here according to support. If it wasn't then the site was running fine now, 'let me know if you have any more problems'.

Right now i got a email it has to do with googlebot overloading my site (which sounds absurd) but i did the fixes he told me (putting robots.txt files in the appropriate folder).
