DreamHost Central Database Upgrade

We will be taking the DreamHost WebPanel and several other central DreamHost services offline for a Database Software Upgrade. This will begin next Wednesday, May 9 at 10PM PDT. The downtime window will continue for up to 6 hours, until Thursday, May 10 2AM PDT, however the expected downtime within this window is only 2 hours.

This will take the following offline:
DreamHost WebPanel
DreamHost-provided webmail
DreamHost Wiki

Customer sites, databases will remain online, and customer email will be still be reachable via POP3 or IMAP.

    I don’t see why everyone cries bloody murder when something happens… I mean yes, we’re paying for a service, but we’re getting AMAZING service. I must admit, when there were those mass server problems a month or so ago and I was down off and on for a week, I wasn’t happy. All it took was an email to support and they responded within minutes and moved me to a different part of the cluster.

    Come on guys, give DH a break. I would bet that other hosts have the same if not more maintenance activity, they just don’t come out clean and say it.

    Just my 2% of $1.

    Actually I don’t call it amazing service when stuff goes down every few days. Yes, other host have downtime, but DH has had for me an order of magnitude more outages than other comparablily priced services I’ve been on. Heck, I’ve got one site on the cheapest plan with one of the big-name registrars and near as I can tell using the monitoring service I use it has a 100% uptime. My DH sites are around 96% (and that’s not counting email outages)…

    An image showing your site down doesn’t mean there’s a system-wide problem. The “contact support” area of the control panel isn’t just there for looks. Want answers? Contact support.

    Same goes for the last guy… Fud seems to be up. Have problems? Contact support.

    Brodi - You have to realize that the posting made by DH about the CENTRAL database maintenance, SCHEDULED in the future has no bearing on your databases being unavailable today. Machines aren’t psychic. Cause and effect actually do make sense in most realities.

    The blank page I am getting from your site is not what I see when I go to sites that do have databases down. (usually connect errors or records not found type messages are thrown).

    Note: I don’t deny you your right to be unhappy or pissed or even say something about the problem. But we’re mostly adults here and we hope that we can all act that way and work on our own problems with the tools that are available to us. DB not working? PUT UP A FREAKIN HTML page to get you something - especially if you need ad revenue to keep the site up.

    At this point it looks like there are some things you could do, like maybe even put up a temporarily unavailable page so that your thronging fan can now that your linksite is down and you are aware of it rather than just complaining here.

    Once you finally learn how to read, you’ll notice there’s a section in the panel for contacting support.

    True is that my sites with DBs are down. I wrote my post influenced by impulse and my sites failure PROBABLY has nothing common with SCHEDULED central DB maintance.
    So I still belive today is not may 9th. ;)
    I hope official DH support is more kind then some of DH customers.

    I’m getting a bit pissed at the lack of service… To begin with things were not bad but after a few months DH are going downhill like an avalanche… The past month has been un-*insert expletive*’ing-believable!!! I laugh when I see the DH homepage that says you’ve been around since 1997… wow, 10 years and you still can’t get sh*t to be stable.

    The number of open support requests jumped from about 50 to 95 in the last 20 minutes.

    From where we are (dietrite), the pattern looks the same as the other day when DH said a filer went down and had to be restarted. That took about 90 minutes to fix

    while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the

    There are thousands of hosts out there. Name one that sets up a special area just for whiners to whine.

    Most host don’t even allow what goes on here, plus they police their forums and delete anything negative.

    The forums are there for discussion, but “waaaaa my site is broken” posts that are nothing but whining get called out there as well. It’s as useless as spam. If it’s general questions or something that can actually be useful… the forum is the place.

    But seriously, if you have a problem, what does it matter who else does? When you get a cold, do you hang out at the hospital and try to form a support group for people with runny noses?

    Contacting support is the only way to actually accomplish anything.

    Actually, that’s nothing for a host with thousands of customers. I’ve seen it way up in the hundreds, which I believe someone at DH even claimed wasn’t a big deal at some point. Especially when it’s a known problem and most of them are just different people reporting the same problem.

    Then, minus out the tickets that aren’t support issues (What is HTML?, How do I customize Wordpress?, What’s wrong with my code?, etc…) and the number is probably much lower.

Indicating that a SCHEDULED FOR THE FUTURE downtime is the cause of your outage is a bit short-sighted.)

    P.S. I know that things happen and sometimes it is possible for things to occur that cause sites to fall off of the world. But the assumption every time that it’s DH’s fault is flawed. Surely there could be other causes.

    The whining here on this forum is only allowed because DH would rather take the chance that users would like to know what is going on without feeling like they are censored. This is *WHY* they put up with the attacks and abuse.

    I have on multiple occasions asked that they turn off comments because they overwhelm and obfuscate the real message. If the message posted by DH was the only thing here, people MIGHT actually read the damn thing and realize that IT’S NOT HAPPENING YET.

    If you really feel like bitching and really want to try to solve the problem in a useful manner - hit the forums at http://discussion.dreamhost.com You’ll find that people will actually try to help you diagnose and fix MANY MANY problems that occur at DH. If nothing else they may be able to help report the issue with DH.

    If you just want to tilt at windmills and bitch about it without actually doing anything proactive to get your site back up. Keep posting here.

    At worst, I saw the control panel running a bit slow earlier today, but otherwise I’ve had no problems at all. In fact, in recent weeks, since ongoing maintenance and the redesign, the panel works a lot better than before. I rarely see it slow down — ever.

    So I agree that there might be a problem with the ISP. At best, maybe some folks should run a traceroute before blaming the host. It’s not always the host, folks.
