Network Problems

Posted (May 8th, 2007 at 9:59 am PST) by brians

Network link between two of our facilities are having issues. This affects all dedicated customers and machines in the frisky cluster. Our Admins are diligently working towards resolving this issue. Please check back for future updates.

UPDATE: Had to do a quick hardware replacement. The Link is back up. Again, we sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

UPDATE 2: The hardware replacement was not on our equipment. Our network provider/colocation provider had a hardware failure on their 10Gbit link between downtown LA and their LAX facility. We’re already working on a backup solution with them and hope to have some extra redundancy in place shortly.

I’ve been a customer for less than 10hrs and am already experiencing downtime! :(

I’m impressed, this might be downtime, but you had recognized the problem within 3 minutes of me first experiencing it mid-ftp session.

Top class :).

Me too, Tim!

Could someone tell me something about these clusters outages?
How can I get knowledge of what cluster hosts my services?

I can assure you, this isnt a frequent occurance, the site I use very rarely suffers downtime.

Dont worry guys. I’ve been with dreamhost for a long time and you rarely have downtime. When you do it’s resolve in notime.

I’ve only been hosting with DreamHost since last month. There have been quite a few of these “short” outages. DreamHost is always fast on the scene, but there seem to be way too many outages.

Working live against my DB for a project that has deadline in 4hours, timing could be better but it gives me some time to WoW ;)
Good work on locating and notifying about the problem DH.

If by ‘Medium’ you mean “All your dedicated server customers are completely offline, but your shared guys seem to be ok” then I guess that’s medium.

But as a one of your dedicated server customers, this isn’t a ‘medium’ problem. All of my sites are completely offline. The box has ceased to exist. It may as well be on fire at this point.

If you’re on a shared plan, you probably don’t even notice there’s a problem.

My site is down, waiting solution of problem.

i agree with nyhm. lots of weird short outages in my one month on dreamhost. hopefully the reliability will improve a bit.

anybody know how long this might take to fix? ballpark?

my sites are down too. hoping the DH-team will resolve the problem soon.
GoGoGo!

Thanks forwards!

Actually I’m on a shared plan on the Veyron server and we’re down right now too. But the dedicated guys are probably much more upset about it, as they should be!

Pronblem solved.
Very good!

@ Tim and Erik

This won’t be the first times you will encounter downtimes. Dreamhost has made a reputation for having those frequently. So no need to panic, I guess…

Confirmed, I’m back in business. Thanks for the speedy work!

Less than one month with Dreamhost. Too many downtimes for me!!! I hope they improve their network connections.

Up and running here too. Nicely done!

Looks like my site is back up… Still, not a very impressive encounter…

Actually this is affecting shared hosting plans as well. I’m on the Carrera server and Frisky cluster so all of my sites are down as well. I agree in that this is not what i could consider a medium level issue. A medium level issue to me is when things are very slow but ultimately still working. Being down is Critical. Not Medium.

I seem to be back online too. Thanks guys!

@ Marcelo: I’ve only been here a month. I’m on the fence. I really like their response time and openness about problems (and this status system is great), but downtime is downtime…

I’m back up! W00t

“If you’re on a shared plan, you probably don’t even notice there’s a problem.”

I’m on a shared plan and I _was_ experiencing this problem. I just checked me site and everything is back to normal again.

Customer for less than a week… BANG !
Good luck in getting it fixed !

hey ipconfig….it was critical (or severe) at first….just went to “medium” in the last couple of sec’s -about the same time people started posting that their sites were coming back up.

good work DH…I’m impressed.

thanks, all works regularly!
great work!!!

Whoot ! Back online Thanks guys !

I’m on shared and I’m down. I thought I was on the server Western but that’s not in their list…

Is the web control panel running slow for everyone else, too?
Trying to renew domain names at the moment…..

Adam,here is one…

Umm… I am in the frisky cluster I think. Machine is blowpop but I am still down. Is it just me?

I just noticed that some of my email didn’t reach its destination (by looking at replies and forwards, I missed a bunch of emails mid thread..) are those just delayed? or lost? (i’m on frisky)

Thanks!

Rob

Look… all the people that are complaining about tons and tons of downtime…. I have host-tracker checking my website every 5 minutes and alerting me to downtime and over the last 4 months I’ve had over 99.74% uptime. That’s flipping amazing for shared hosting.

It is a nice thing that steps are being taken to ensure network redudancy.

Uptime has gotten substantially better around here in the last couple months. My services have all experienced 100% uptime in the last two weeks, with an overall 99.17% uptime since just after their main datacenter had their power killed. Fairly impressive, if you ask me, and considering this outage wasn’t even something they could control (hard to do when it’s the uplink your colo facility provides), they had a very quick response time. Way to go, DreamHost!

I was doing 99.79%, but had to reset the Host-Tracker probes because I messed up and brought one of my sites down for two hours this morning. Pesky WP-Cache plug-in. It’s OK for simple WP blogs, primarily static content. But if you add dynamic stuff, such as stock listings, and lots of Ajax-oriented material, watch out!

Peace,
Gene

As mentioned by the other two (James & Gene Steinberg), my actual uptime over the past month has been perfect — as in 100.00% uptime!

People saying they have something down daily have to realize they probably have 10,000 points of potential failure on their own equipment (about 1500 servers, 1500 processors, 1500 memory modules, 1500 power supplies, 1500 network cards, 1500 cables, 1500 hard drives, etc [and many/most probably have 2 or more memory cards/hard drives at the least]) — not to mention any equipment that they don’t own themselves. And not all these outages are for the same people.

Anyone else experincing site being slow?

@Mary

I think that list is a little bit incomplete, didn´t you ?

Those sites are fueled by affiliate payouts–not knowledge or honesty.

They’re best list is mostly hosts with high payouts. There are great hosts with no affiliate programs that aren’t commented on even once.

You could start up the worst host in the world, put up a $300 affiliate program and never have to worry about showing up on a ‘worst hosts’ list.

I just found the list on digg.com frontpage … :-/
