Spunky Downtime
We are experiencing problems with one of our network filerservers. This is causing inflated loads on machines in the spunky cluster. As a result, you may experience connection issues when attempting to access your site, email, etc. Our Admins are diligently working towards resolving this matter. Below is a list of the affected machines. Please check back here for future updates.
Updated list of servers:
alvarado archibald arrow blowpop bottlecap burton butler catalina cerritos crunch doheny fletcher fudge garland gobstopper gumdrop haven hillhurst hyperion lankershim lemonhead lucas manchester mills nash nilla ord plenty price pringle saltine schnapps starburst sunset taffy tequila western whittier york
Update! The above list of servers are the ones which actually had mounts on the file server in question. It seems we experienced some file system corruption on one of the volumes this file server mounted. Our attempts to repair the damage were not fruitful, so we have restored your home directories from backup. This required many reboots of various web servers and the file server itself. We apologize for the downtime this caused.
The data restore affects exactly 45 users data, outside of any downtime, so this most likely does not apply to you.
We have upgraded the file server head unit to the latest version of its operating system, so hopefully this will not be an issue in the future.

Niagara is down too I believe.
May 18th, 2007 at 8:50 am
This says resolved, but I still have the issue. I have a support request submitted. Anyone else still having issues even though this is marked as resolved?
May 18th, 2007 at 8:50 am
oh they changed it. good.
May 18th, 2007 at 8:55 am
All my DH accounts are havign trouble with outgoing mail, and they’re on Spunky, Looney, and Randy.
May 18th, 2007 at 8:56 am
Ditto me–randy mail not going out.
May 18th, 2007 at 8:58 am
Ditto — outgoing mail not going out. I am on Postal.
May 18th, 2007 at 8:58 am
site up. mail also not going out.
May 18th, 2007 at 9:01 am
You can add ‘Spacey’ to the list of the affected.
May 18th, 2007 at 9:02 am
Same here, my site is up but my email is having issues. Email is on spacey
May 18th, 2007 at 9:03 am
It sucks that the RSS feed for dreamhoststatus.com doesn’t update as quickly as the site itself. Or is that a problem with bloglines? I didn’t know why my email wasn’t going out until I actually clicked through the the site & see that this alert went up 10 minutes ago…
May 18th, 2007 at 9:04 am
Flanders mail isn’t going out either.
May 18th, 2007 at 9:05 am
Panel seems to be down as well …
May 18th, 2007 at 9:06 am
ughhh lovely..
May 18th, 2007 at 9:07 am
Always seems like email has issues on Friday for one reason or another… Strange. At least they’ve gotten quicker at posting status messages on the status pages.
Whenever my users ask what’s wrong with the email on Fridays, I just say “It’s Friday, we always have issues with DreamHost on Fridays!”.
Of course they don’t like that answer much…
May 18th, 2007 at 9:07 am
Outgoing mail isn’t very outgoing anywhere at the moment.
May 18th, 2007 at 9:09 am
mail on Murdock isn’t going out either
May 18th, 2007 at 9:14 am
Our mail server is Frisky and we can’t send emails either.
May 18th, 2007 at 9:18 am
If you have not already done so, add spacey to the list too.
May 18th, 2007 at 9:19 am
’spacey’ has problems too. (I’ve only noticed outgoing mail right now)
May 18th, 2007 at 9:22 am
i casn’t send e-mails from my site—hope this is resolved fast because i have some important stuff to send! (just like everyone else, i’m sure!)
May 18th, 2007 at 9:24 am
mail on melrose also not going out
May 18th, 2007 at 9:25 am
How do you tell what mail servers you’re on?
May 18th, 2007 at 9:27 am
yeah, we’re Randy, and our outgoing is not working, too. happy friday in dreamhost land..
May 18th, 2007 at 9:27 am
just currious, I’m in California and it says I posted at 9:24am and it was 10:24 am. I didn’t realize there was someone that was an hour behind us.
May 18th, 2007 at 9:27 am
Randy is gimpy too on outgoing mail.
May 18th, 2007 at 9:28 am

May 18th, 2007 at 9:29 am
Did someone say frisky?
May 18th, 2007 at 9:30 am
Arghhh. Email down in the middle of the day really puts a stop on our business. (Just venting.)
May 18th, 2007 at 9:32 am
my email server is swarthy, but i can’t out any email. Anybody knows why???
May 18th, 2007 at 9:33 am
topanga is affected, too. Websites come back as a “bad_httpd_conf” error message, and outgoing mail doesn’t work. Panel seems OK.
May 18th, 2007 at 9:34 am
Brendan… in your Dreamhost panel click on “Account Status” on the top right side of the screen, it lists all the servers you’re on.
Yeah FRISKY is down too. At least the smtp/outgoing mail is down.
May 18th, 2007 at 9:35 am
I’m on spunky… receiving mail is fine.. sending SMTP is not working…
BUT, webmail seems to be working perfectly for me… both sending and receiving…. nice alternative if you need it…
May 18th, 2007 at 9:36 am
Come back Spunky! We believe! WE BELIEVE!
May 18th, 2007 at 9:36 am
Brendan - you can check your email and web clusters by going to the DH control panel and clicking on “Account Status” in the upper-right corner of the screen. Your web server is different from your email server.
May 18th, 2007 at 9:38 am
Well looks like spacey is out too. Though some messages are going through, just a high profusion of the 450 errors again.
May 18th, 2007 at 9:42 am
My mailserver (Frisky) is not on the list but is having the same kind of problems. Main webserver is miata
May 18th, 2007 at 9:46 am
Receiving mail fine, SMTP is down.
Ironic… perhaps “Not so Spunky” would be a better name.
May 18th, 2007 at 9:49 am
email out on randy as well.
May 18th, 2007 at 9:50 am
oh, my site is on melrose, but spunky is my e-mail. It’s become clear now. Just told my boss I could make him a gmail account so he could send his important e-mails. That didn’t go over big. He’s resorted to calling his clients. Just rambling as I eagerly await the return of or email. Just when it seemed like things were working nicely round here.
When life looks like easy street, there’s danger at your door…
May 18th, 2007 at 9:52 am
Can someone from DH please update on what’s going on and when we can expect a resolution? This is getting to be pretty annoying in the middle of the workday and all…
May 18th, 2007 at 9:53 am
w007 - my email just sent (from spunky)
May 18th, 2007 at 9:53 am
And this type of downtime is happening way too frequently.
May 18th, 2007 at 9:55 am
I believe Randy is down too.
May 18th, 2007 at 9:56 am
I still love you!
May 18th, 2007 at 10:07 am
I love you too!
May 18th, 2007 at 10:10 am
Can’t send email. Second email issue THIS WEEK.
I’ve already opened a new account with another provider.
May 18th, 2007 at 10:10 am
My site is working perfectly. Please take spunky out to the north 40 and shoot it. (Okay, Sitemeter seems to have misplaced about 100 people but, heck…)
May 18th, 2007 at 10:14 am
My email went out (finally) about 5 minutes ago. I’m on spunky.
May 18th, 2007 at 10:16 am
Never mind. I just had another one fail to go out…
May 18th, 2007 at 10:17 am
Ok,
So now things get really interesting. Just had a 5 min window where everything worked. A profusion of e-mails then agian, outbox’s filling up and 450 error messages.
What are these guys doing out there???
May 18th, 2007 at 10:18 am
still failing here! resolved????
May 18th, 2007 at 10:35 am
So much for 99% uptime. I put a PNG picture in my web space and the whole system goes down.
May 18th, 2007 at 10:38 am
Spank Spunky, dammit!
May 18th, 2007 at 10:45 am
It looks like the panel is down too. I’m also having trouble with a database. I can’t log into a wiki.
May 18th, 2007 at 11:03 am
The status says resolved.. but it doesn’t seem to be so in actuality…
May 18th, 2007 at 11:07 am
I am still getting the same error message I was getting when I reported this hours ago.
May 18th, 2007 at 11:09 am
This is NOT resolved. I am still receiving the message:
Site Temporarily Unavailable
error id: “bad_httpd_conf”
When trying to access my sites. My web server is GRAPPA.
May 18th, 2007 at 11:13 am
my sites on OLIVE are still all down, also.
May 18th, 2007 at 11:13 am
I’m still receiving an error message like the one stated above, on server http://files.remino.net/.
My files are on Topanga.
May 18th, 2007 at 11:15 am
I’m still getting the “bad_httpd_conf” error message. Web server is goober.
May 18th, 2007 at 11:37 am
All my domains are still getting “bad_htppd_conf” error. I’m on grappa.
May 18th, 2007 at 11:48 am
One tech got back to me (very quickly!) and said that apache needed to be restarted. However, that only cleared up a couple of my numerous domains, most of which are still having problems. )-8
May 18th, 2007 at 11:50 am
All of my sites on goober are still down and reporting;
error id: “bad_httpd_conf”
May 18th, 2007 at 11:50 am
I’m on grappa as well and my sites are still down, too
May 18th, 2007 at 11:52 am
My topanga still down: error id: “bad_httpd_conf”
May 18th, 2007 at 11:53 am
On grappa here, and all are still down…
May 18th, 2007 at 12:09 pm
Wow. This is the first time in almost a year that the server I’m on has shown up in a post as having any sort of problems. Not bad. And here it is already fixed by the time I see the post.
May 18th, 2007 at 12:10 pm
york is back and my chmods were gone
May 18th, 2007 at 12:12 pm
On Topanga… still down!
May 18th, 2007 at 12:47 pm
Topanga is still down!!
May 18th, 2007 at 12:52 pm
Geez… How many hours will it take to restart Topanga?!
May 18th, 2007 at 12:53 pm
Why does it still say RESOLVED when it manifestly isn’t? come on, guys!
May 18th, 2007 at 1:07 pm
SERIOUSLY Laura Q! The issue certainly isn’t resolved.
Ironically, I just got an email response to the the support question I submitted regarding this issue and it said that the problem has been resolved.
May 18th, 2007 at 1:10 pm
FINALLY!
Now, it’s working.
Thank you.
May 18th, 2007 at 1:16 pm
I received an email as well but my sites are still down. I did get the tech’s direct email address though.
May 18th, 2007 at 2:23 pm
STILL NOT WORKING… THIS IS RIDICULOUS
May 18th, 2007 at 6:41 pm
Sean - your site is working currently. Maybe it’s possible you were one of the 45 users it affected?
Or more likely some other issue that isn’t listed here.
May 20th, 2007 at 12:52 am
not working!!!! can you take a look please?
May 21st, 2007 at 7:11 pm
So, which 45 Users?
