Network problems this morning

We are currently experiencing some networking issues that may affect access to Dreamhost servers. The problem is being looked into at this time and we will post with updated information as soon as it becomes available.

UPDATE —
The problems with network have been solved. They problem turned out to be a large amount of dns traffic that was hammering our internal dns servers and slowing them down to the point of connections timing out.

  1. Tommy Stafford Says:

We just lost our ability to pop any e-mail accounts. So far website is okay.

  2. Robin Aag Says:

My website are working, but my email dosen’t work! I hope you fix it now!

  3. hedgy Says:

Same problem here with POP mail

  4. amy Says:

email is down here too. website is fine.

  5. Robin Aag Says:

    Same with iMAP

  6. Jaime Says:

Dreamhost we have a problem! Email servers not working here either.

  7. Lucrix Says:

    Same problem here :(

  8. Jaime Says:

Hmm, no more problems here, for now. :)

  9. Denis Says:

Email servers seem to be down.

I haven’t received anything for 2-3 hours (neither test messages, nor spam, which I usually receive at 10 msgs/hour).

  10. Why not? Says:

IMAP so far this morning has been spotty, thanks for working on the problem

  11. Jaime Says:

Never mind, all is NOT well yet.

  12. Emz Says:

My website is available (if slow loading) but I’ve been having with email for a good couple of hours now.
Hope the problem gets resolved quickly - as I’m sure everyone does!
    :P

  13. Rodrigo Says:

I was doing some site maintenance, and everything went down. Didn`t check email, though.

I tried to make a new database, and it didn’t work out.

I tried to remove producao.teiaviva.com subdomain, but it is not listed in subdomains. Then I tried to add producao.teiaviva.com and the system says it is already in DNS. I am working with producao1.teiaviva.com for a subdomain test.

  14. Alex Says:

Damnit, i needed a validation code from paypal. I can’t lose that mail please. Mail server not working, can’t send nor receive.

  15. Tommy Says:

My pop came back up for about 15 minutes but now down again at 09:40 EDT.

  16. urk Says:

website connectivity (on spacey) is ok but website->external resources is bad (ie feed retrieving) …

  17. Daniel Says:

SQL just bought the farm on my sites.

  18. Melissa Says:

Down here too…receiving but no outgoing.
I have full access to the Webmail which might help those expecting an important email.

    9:44am EDT

  19. Micah Says:

Manchester seems fine, but pop/imap isn’t working. Server rejects passwords for all accounts, but webmail functions OK. ALEX above - check the code on your squirrelmail, should be there - just an authentication problem maybe. I have missed at least 15 offers for cheap prescription drugs so far - keep up the good work ;-)

  20. Denis Says:

Why is this happening precisely when I am expecting 3 important e-mails?

    D’oh!

  21. javispedro Says:

It seems mail (both incoming and outgoing) is not working at all. Don’t create shell users right now! It takes forever…

  22. Denis Says:

SMTP server swarthy is not going well at all.

    telnet mx1.balanced.swarthy.mail.dreamhost.com 25
    Trying 208.97.132.57…
    Connected to mx1.balanced.swarthy.mail.dreamhost.com.
    Escape character is ‘^]’.
    Connection closed by foreign host.

  23. Arlen Says:

IMAP is working, but I appear to not be receiving new mail.

  24. Denis Says:

Given that the MX servers are not OK, it is no surprise you don’t get anything thru IMAP, POP or WebMail!

The messages simply cannot arrive on Dreamhost platform. They are waiting outside.

  25. Russel Says:

My sites on malt, hillmont, and fidget are working fine. Email on spunky is working for me. Also, MySQL on courage is working for me.

  26. jason Says:

Same - waiting for an activation email.

Anyway, am happy they are aware of it, and we’ve been notified there is an issue. Means we can be sure they are looking in to it, so there is a ‘light’ at the end of the tunnel. Let’s just hope its not a long tunnel :)

Double up those coffee scoops DH tech’s, and thanks in advance for the efforts you’ll put in to resolve the issues as quickly as possible :)

If I could make one request, it would be to please try and save our emails.

    Cheers

    Jason

  27. Russel Says:

I responded too soon. I can connect with IMAP on spunky but my SMTP is down.

  28. urk Says:

lot of ‘cURL error 6: name lookup timed out’ when retrieving external feeds…

  29. Chris Says:

Yeah, my site is down again, as it was this morning for about 4 hours. Yeah, it’s just managed hosting and hardly anyone looks at my site. But yeah, how is that going to change when my site is down so often. This is crap, I don’t experience anywhere near this amount of downtime with other hosts. I’m paid up until February next year. I may well be moving before that.

  30. titius Says:

And how http://www.dreamhost.com always works ?? I mean, if you have networking problems, this problem, that problem. then how this page is working fine ??

  31. jason Says:

My websites have all been working (though slow)…

my email has been down this whole time though, but yay, I just got my first delayed email… 2 1/2 hrs after it was sent… anyway, good to see there is progress.

Bit of patience, and I am sure we’ll all be greatful soon that things are back to normal.

Keep up the good work DH I’d rather late email than lost email :)

    Jason

  32. Justin Says:

dbConnect() unable to connect to database server “jam-sql.musicrush.com”
MySQL error 1040 - Too many connections

  33. TC Says:

Hmmm…things were fine for me on western all morning till about 5 minutes ago…

  34. Kappy Says:

Nice, my first 24 hours with Dreamhost as I’m moving domains over…

    I sincerely hope this isn’t standard issue…

  35. jason Says:

its not standard, but it does happen… 4th time in 13 months for me.

once they are on it though its usually a good sign (but never hold ones breath)

  36. Dan Says:

I seem to be able to receive mail, but not send it. I get a socket error.

  37. Ryan Says:

Am I the only one with issues today? I had this happen a week or so ago and I fixed it by changing my ports for IMAP…but it does not seem to solve the issue today.

  38. Ryan Says:

Oops, where does the time go…here I was thinking this was the 21st. I guess I’m not the only one today.

  39. Gavin Says:

    All MYSQ

  40. Gavin Says:

All MYSQL databases are down for me…

  41. crank! Says:

    belong to us?

  42. Roger Says:

Email blocked earlier, just now went through. Website seems fine.

  43. AJ Kirwin Says:

My toaster isn’t working. I blame you :(

  44. Denis Says:

    Email still down.

MX servers start to answer but connection is closed nevertheless.

What a mess… I really need to find a good mail hosting somewhere.

  45. kringle Says:

We’ve been w/ DH just over a week now and this is the 2nd time email’s been down and it’s affecting our work. This is just not right…

  46. Dominic Hodgson Says:

    all email down here,

  47. David Says:

database server is down! really upset~

  48. Elana Says:

SMTP is down, IMAP is spotty.

  49. Dani Says:

ya i thought something was up, i missed 3 e-mails this morning, that i get every day from an automatic system….

  50. heomap Says:

I can’t edit any php file but my site still alive :(

  51. aph3x Says:

Any update on ETA of when this will be fixed?

I guess you get what you pay for with DH. This is really frustrating.

  52. Kappy Says:

mysql seems to be working fine for Wordpress.

I would be nice if we could get some updates from Dreamhost…it tends to make customers feel better if they have some understanding of the progress of resolving the issue.

  53. Frank Says:

My site works but mysql connection problems and to many connection error. what is going on now. is this another attack?

  54. mindctrl Says:

SMTP seems to be down. POP working fine.

  55. dupola Says:

Email servers seem to be down.

  56. Leith Says:

Pop/imap seems to be working fine. Haven’t been able to send emails for hours.

  57. kringle Says:

    Frank… What kind of attack?

  58. xenous Says:

All Mysql and Email are down …

  59. Frank Says:

Could be a denial of service attack on the mysql servers. Every one seems to be reporting to many connection to server problems.

  60. bobcobb Says:

my sites not working, not sure how long its been down, but I assume its becuase of this issue.

  61. kringle Says:

Anyone know… will emails that came in during this downtime be lost when the servers come back online?

  62. John Says:

Website’s up ( http://www.scottsdale-properties.com), email’s down… I can say no SPAM for the last few hours is nice. ;-)

  63. javispedro Says:

I just received one test email I sent to DH mx’s during the outage, so I think at least some messages will be received.

  64. aaarrrggghhh Says:

Junkmail is coming through but real emails are not!!! WTF?!

  65. jez Says:

lucky me, not experiencing any downtime at the moment. not trouble with sql, mail or website :) yay

  66. Denis Says:

Junkmail is coming through because spammers are always on. Real e-mails have been rejected and will be submitter later (hopefully) by the sender’s relay.

  67. kman Says:

On Olive. Website seems fine, and pop access works fine. No SMTP, however, so new emails are not arriving. Good thing I have a 3rd party spooling service!

  68. patrice Says:

incoming emails okay, outgoing emails not working on all domains.

  69. Rick Beckman Says:

Certain parts of my site are responding just fine. It seems as though the more MySQL is relied upon, the slower the pages load. But the pages *do* load, eventually.

  70. marcusbacus Says:

E-mail works fine but the sites are slow as shit.

  71. Leo Renard Says:

Fortunately enough for me, all my services are working great.

  72. TOmR Says:

Hey how come our email is not working. I am happy with Dreamhost but this can’t happen very often

  73. Nila Says:

My Contact email forms aren’t working.

  74. Seyora Says:

To people complaining about email: switch to Google Apps for your domain. Problem solved.

  75. Si Robertson Says:

Just letting you know that incoming email is fine, outgoing emails cannot be sent from any of the domains I have tried here.

Normally this wouldn’t be a problem but I do actually need to fire out some important emails to some clients in a few hours time so I have my fingers ( and everything else ) crossed that you guys can get this one sorted out sooner rather than later.

    :)

  76. xenous Says:

benji sql server is back… Still mails are not working. But they are really working as i see :)

  77. design1-1 Says:

no outgoing email here 10:01 AM PST

  78. design1-1 Says:

why is your time sig out of wack?

  79. Denis Says:

Incoming email is NOT fine. There are probably thousands of messages queued somewhere, waiting to be delivered. Or worse, if those messages have been trashed, which I cannot believe.

  80. TooCrooked Says:

fortunately enough for me, i dont run this service for anything but personal need. i feel very badly for those who rely on this service for any type of financial purposes.

people try to pass off the problems at dreamhost as sporadic and far in between, but nothing could be further from the truth. i haver experienced outage after outage after outage with this service many times in the months ive been with this service. customer support is usually pretty stellar, but the need for it arises far too often when it comes to uptime.

funny how the initial blog about the email states that it was resolved.. and then they try to pass this off as a different problem…

    JUST TO CLARIFY:

disregard all posts that state these problems are few/far in between. they’re highly erroneous. this happens often, and will continue to happen often.

  81. Ted Says:

This is horrible!!! When will this be fixed???

  82. TooCrooked Says:

also, emails are being lost, not queued.. that based on my observations. i had more than a dozen expected emails that have dissapeared into the depths, while newer emails are flowing overtop the others.

  83. John Says:

Over four-and-a-half hours ago, the notice said “experiencing some networking issues.” We KNOW that! I think that customers deserve a little more specific information after this long. Has DreamHost isolated the problem? Is there an expected time of restoration? Is a final fix in the works? These are the answers that belong on a real status page.

  84. the1337g33k Says:

I have no problems at all! All I had was a 5 minute database hiccup, but my uptime tracker shows 100% uptime for the past 2 weeks.

  85. Alfons Says:

Your incoming emails aren’t lost, perhaps.

When you send an email, your mailserver try to connects to the oder mailserver. If the destination mailserver is not responding, your mailserver try it again, and again. Depending of his configuration. When your mailserver arrives to is timeout, send a message to you telling it.

Now, if a third person, with the mailsever outside DH network, perhaps, the 3rd person’s mailserver is trying to connect to DH maiserver… if this 3rd person’s mailserver has no anwser, it’ll retry… If, after his timeout, the 3rd person’s mailserver cannot connect to DH mailsever, this 3rd person’s mailserver will send an email to the sender.

It’s usually like it, in the most common configurations.

  86. Rolland Says:

    What exactly did Alfons say?

Anyway, cant send or receive email except within webmail i can receive there. And the Account test process isnt working.

  87. effie Says:

My SMTP is not working so I can’t send emails, I’ve had people emailing me (on email addresses not connected with Dreamhost accounts) reporting that when they try to email my account that the email bounces back to them. I’ve used Dreamhost for awhile now but it seems that for the past few months I keep having problems with outages. I agree, customer service is fantastic, but I rely on my web site/email as a business so these outages/problems are really concerning for me. Can someone honestly report if this is a problem you can face with any host?

  88. getting-sick-of-this Says:

This is RIDICULOUS… it’s been going on for HOURS NOW!!!!!

  89. Bryan Says:

I can ping frisky, but SMTP isn’t even running. The SMTP issue says its fixed and its just the network issue being worked.

I can reach the server fine - but no mail service is running

  90. TooCrooked Says:

these problems can occur with any host, regardless. however, these problems at dreamhost are commonplace. based on my experiences here, i would never reccomend a business to use this platform. it just isnt stable enough, and too little information (seen here) is passed in the (common) event of an outage.

  91. Jim Says:

My site is working, but my email does not seem to be nor do the single-click installs.

  92. Un Real Says:

Sometimes, I wonder why I signed up with DH.

  93. Jim Says:

P.S. TooCrooked, is there ANY reason for the website linked through your name? I assume it’s yours.

  94. junobear Says:

Cannot send out email; can receive. Come on, guys…

  95. Beau Says:

How long does it take to sort this mess out? I just signed up to Dreamhost yesterday and am greeted by this absolute disaster. I for one do hope we will in someway be reimbursed for this incident, I’ve lost a whole days work here over the weekend and to be quite honest am tired of waiting for the issue to be resolved; not a good first impression to your services, Dreamhost; while I do wish we will work things out in the near future.

  96. gndou Says:

It seems like dreamhost has frequent networking problems.
    Someone needs to get fired.

  97. TooCrooked Says:

not really. it was a free domain, so i put a picture there. other than that, i dont even use it except for the catch-all address

  98. Fraser Says:

WHAT THE HELL! Where is my god damned email?!

  99. umm Says:

it’s a bit inappropriate, and most likely illegal, no?

  100. Rodrigo Says:

Do someone know any other better webhosting service?

    I can’t put up with this…

  101. ICantBelieveIt Says:

    5 hours with network problems??

What about buying any good Firewalls?

  102. TooCrooked Says:

id disagree on both counts! you can report if it so pleases you!

  103. felt Says:

cant create a database is this the cause ? please help, been wasting hours for this

  104. the_roy Says:

I haven’t had mail issues that I’m aware of, but I registered a website this morning that still isn’t registered. Is this related? I haven’t ever had anything like this occur before.

  105. Rancilio Says:

I am new at dreamhost since three weeks ago. It is the second time that I see network problems. This time it seems to be a serious problem.

These kind of problems are normal in this company?

  106. Justin Bull Says:

Normal email works fine, catch-all is down the tubes.

  107. Rodrigo Says:

I am paying DH to HOST my sites.
And it’s not being hosted by know… So??

  108. simon Says:

“demeter:raeann” MySQL Server is down - my site http://WWW.PlateOfTheDay.com is down

This sucks - are we going to get compensated for the downtime? I am losing money

  109. runt Says:

no working email at all since around 10am. big problem since i need to receive emails about a car accident i was involved in.

  110. Beau Says:

I agree, this service has so far in my opinion not fit for purpose nor of merchantable quality; if Dreamhost fail to compensate us in some matter it would be rather unethical.

  111. Chris Says:

I’ve spent the day looking at other hosts. Nowhere does Dreamhost get a lookin in the top 10. No wonder. I’m sick of all this down time, I’m tired of the problems, I’ll be moving before the next billing.

  112. Jacki Gallagher-Prince Says:

This is iNSANE! And it’s happening more often then not lately! I get one day off a week and that’s the day I have to do ALL my regular work (I’m a stay at home mom) And most of my day is shot now.

I have been thinking of switching to servage and now I think I just might because this is so ridiculous!

  113. Matt Says:

Hey the RSS feed for this should have Severity and Status in the little blurb–rather than the first line (which is not updated). That extra click is really wearing out my hand.

  114. Howard Says:

This is my first week with my first hosting service with my first website. I’m glad to know that it isn’t my fault, but my users probably aren’t convinced. I hope this sort of thing doesn’t go on for too long or too often!

  115. Derek Says:

I’ve been having connectability all morning for both email and the website, its just that its slow as hell — reminds of those days with the good ol’ 5600 bauds — ok, time for reminiscing is over, fix this shit

  116. DW Says:

    It’s fixed now

  117. Mike Says:

I’ve spent the day looking at other hosts. Nowhere does Dreamhost get a lookin in the top 10. No wonder.

Are you serious? Top 10 lists are based on the highest paying hosts. Dreamhost lets the customer get the full referral through promo codes, so the scam host review sites can’t make as much cash from recommending them.

if Dreamhost fail to compensate us in some matter it would be rather unethical.

That doesn’t even make sense. Show me where in the TOS, which you agreed to when you signed up, it says that you get money if there’s downtime. Still waiting… Exactly, it’s not there. That’s not unethical.

You can’t put a business on a cheap shared hosting account ANYWHERE and expect 100% uptime.

Get a dedicated server. Or atleast multiple shared accounts with failover DNS.

Crying about downtime doesn’t count as taking measures to prevent it. If you can’t afford to do things right, your site isn’t as important as you think.

  118. Dan Says:

Outbound mail still won’t work for me.

  119. dbrown Says:

I took my company’s email off of dreamhost a year ago and we’ve been amazingly happy since. My girlfriend’s site is still hosted by dreamhost so occasionally I get reminded of the customer-service horror of those days. Switching hosts was the only viable solution for me.

  120. Ramp Says:

email, forums databases and joomla sites doesnt work for me =(

  121. Paul O'Rorke Says:

Mail is working but it is very slow.

I hope that there is some process at DH where you will not just fix this but also think about how you can avoid having this happen in the future.

Having mail out for hours and hours is not acceptable.

  122. jim Says:

well this is getting to be the norm now here isnt it, i sent myself a test email 3 hours ago to a yahoo account and it never made it.. together with the 50 or so urgent work related mails to Asia today.. sighs..

  123. jim Says:

will the missing mail make it ?

  124. oleg Says:

Does anyone know if any e-mails originating from a dreamhost account during this outage period are lost or are they queued up somewhere?

  125. brett Says:

hey, this happens to all hosting companies. DH has a LOT of servers and hosts a LOT of companies. we’ve been using them for, wow so long we can’t remember - 12 or 14, 15 years now. have patience, they’ll fix it and make it stronger. sometimes an outage of this sort has even been caused by external forces directed at them, or their clients. i can see it being frustrating if this is your first week with DH, because most of the time this doesn’t happen.

  126. jim Says:

Does anyone know if any e-mails originating from a dreamhost account during this outage period are lost or are they queued up somewhere? i NEED to know this too!

  127. Beau Says:

    >> Mike

I believe nobody is asking for money here. I am simply stating that we should be refunded for the downtime in such a means of perhaps, the duration of the downtime refunded onto our account.

I advise you to remove your head from Dreamhost’s ass to see the reality:

Just because it doesn’t state in Dreamhost’s TOS that it doesn’t refund for downtime, doesn’t mean it can just do whatever the hell the company wishes to do.
If Dreamhost decided to shut everyones account off, just because they can, and it’s not in the TOS that they cannot do such a thing, then do you think we, the users, should just sit here and watch us get scammed for our money?

    Get real.

  128. Russell Williams Says:

when I tried to “move and whitelist” an email out of my junkmail box it was lost… Will it come back?

  129. TooCrooked Says:

    point: beau

and for those missing emails, i wouldnt count on them coming back.

and again, i implore any reader — do NOT listen to ANYONE (even if they claim they’ve been with DH a long time) that things like this arent commonplace. just look at the outage history blogs. you can obviously disregard the ones that look like they were fixed quickly, becuase earlier this counterpart to this blog stated the problems were fixed. so much for that.

    fact.

  130. FG Says:

I haven’t been able to do mail using the php mail function for most of today (on forms that usually work no prob). This must be related to these email problems.

    Dreamhost wake up already.

  131. Kirk Sigmon Says:

My SMTP is bad, but my incoming mail seems fine. I’m not too torn up about this, but please get it fixed soon, I have to yell at some employees of my own.

  132. Chris Says:

    >>>”Are you serious? Top 10 lists are based on the highest paying hosts. Dreamhost lets the customer get the full referral through promo codes, so the scam host review sites can’t make as much cash from recommending them.”

  133. Chris Says:

“Are you serious? Top 10 lists are based on the highest paying hosts. Dreamhost lets the customer get the full referral through promo codes, so the scam host review sites can’t make as much cash from recommending them.”

Mike, are you seriously saying that nowhere is it possible to research hosts, that there are no objective measures, that when people comment about uptime or downtime or test hosts all that is nonsense? I know one thing, I’m passionate about my sites - they may be crap to you - but they are my life. I can’t afford my own server, but somewhere, you understand, there might be a company in the States that offers something better than this - or is every single company exactly the same? Weird notion man.

  134. duncan Says:

We were running a very expensive ad campaign today and our formmail is only working now and then..its costing us a fortune in lost customers and orders!!!

    not a happpy bunny

other than this i love dreamhosts

  135. Paul Says:

Some mail is coming through, but slowly. Other mail reported sent to me has yet to arrive. SMTP is down.

  136. oleg Says:

Surely in the nearly seven hours since this issue has originally been reported, someone at Dreamhost can let us know about the status of the missing e-mails. Is this too much to ask?

  137. May Ling Says:

I moved to dreamhost because my previous host, hostcabin kept on having problems that screwed up my mail accounts. Now it appears I’ve tied myself into a contract with a company that may have the same problems. I suppose all web hosts will have problems every now and again but an update on their progress in solving the problem would be nice.

  138. Denis Says:

I wonder what these “network problems” actually are. Total blackout does not sound very well to me, about the same sound as “we don’t control the situation”.

I seems that the whole DH mail platform has collapsed and that they are fighting to put it on again. I know that this is one of the major issues any hoster has to face, because spam is very invasive and mail is a sensitive channel.

This would not be that annoying if this happened rarely, but my feeling is that the platform is becoming more unstable each month…

Please DH, at least tell us what’s happening!!!

  139. kringle Says:

I”ve been with 4 different hosts in the last 8 years and have NEVER experienced downtime that lasted this long (going on 8 hours as of their own reporting). This is NOT the standard in web hosting. I joined DH because (a) they’re “green” and (b) the space/cost ratio was better than our last host. BUT, our last host, Liquidweb never had such a downtime and I was with them for over 2 years. I’m thinking switching to DH was a mistake. Good news is we’re still within the 97 day guarantee period and after today, we may have to invoke that… this kind of technical failure is not acceptable.

  140. gendou Says:

I wonder what sort of problem has caused this much downtime?
Maybe there aren’t any staff around to fix it because it’s Sunday?

  141. Why not? Says:

I think TooCrooked’s brain is down. Better file a support ticket there buddy!

  142. enough Says:

Anyone think these guys know what’s going on: http://dreamhost.com/aboutus-profiles.html ?? Maybe someone should be telling them…

  143. I'm Gonna lose it Says:

I am about to lose allot of money shortly. I run 2 websites and one is a retiual business and I can’t get my customer’s emails at all. Plus I am not able to email my customers who I need info to be able to ship the overnight packages. ARRgghhh!!!! Isn’t there a way to haave a backup email server?

  144. Beau Says:

I can’t say this for definite, but I think some of the issues have been fixed.

I changed my domain to PHP 5, and ther “5-10″ minute duration that has been going on for the past 7 hours has passed, so they must be doing something right.

  145. Vince Says:

Fortunately, I can use my ISP’s SMTP server to send mail.

  146. Corey Says:

TO EVERYONE TALKING ABOUT EMAIL BEING DOWN:

Might I recommend you don’t use your web hosts mail servers, regardless of your host? They’re really probably not the best way to go since you have problems like these, and you’re going to lose all of your past email anytime you switch hosts. Instead, go sign up for Google Apps (free, of course) and point your email over there. You can still be John@smithtrading.com, but you’ll get all your mail and it’ll be stored and everything just like a Gmail account. It’s really easy to set up and you have very little downtime…and your email is stored forever.

  147. kringle Says:

Is Google Apps free? Cause from what I’m seeing it’s only a promo where it’s free till May 31.

  148. Corey Says:

That’s the premiere edition (API access & phone support) that you see the promotion on. You can still sign up for the standard edition and get access to customized calendars, up to 50 email accounts, etc. Link below.

    http://www.google.com/a/help/intl/en/admins/editions.html

  149. Dan Says:

You don’t lose all your past e-mail when you switch hosts if you downloaded it into an e-mail program on your own computer, as I do… then the status of the host is irrelevant where past historical mail is concerned.

  150. kringle Says:

    Thanks, Corey!

  151. Emz Says:

    THANKS!!!!!

  152. Jacki Gallagher-Prince Says:

    All fixed!!!

  153. Emz Says:

I can confirm that my email and website are now both working perfectly!
    Thanks you guys!

  154. Beau Says:

Thank you DH for fixing this!

  155. Keven Says:

i still have probs.. cant log in to my ftp account. or ma site functions..
    since yesterday morning.

  156. Segfault Says:

Websites on lenny are still extremely slow… Couldn’t logged into SSH on lenny either, it froze after entering the password.

  157. John Says:

MY site just went down. Can’t connect to site, ftp or mysql.

  158. felt Says:

i cant create a database for hours and still the same. is it resolved or not goddamn!

  159. Nou Says:

Why the problem is indicated as resolved while everything is down?

  160. ICantBelieveIt Says:

    Mail is still not working!

  161. Corey Says:

Dan, how ill-fated your logic is. While your email program may download all of your email, it probably doesn’t help you make backups of it, or run a POP server so that another computer may access it. This means that while you have a copy of your email on your computer for your use there, a failed hard drive takes it out, as does losing your computer. If you switch to a new computer you have to worry about transferring all of it over, else you don’t have it. Also, you run the risk of it becoming corrupted. And lastly, you can’t access it from anywhere else except your computer.

I have 4 computers at home along…I couldn’t imagine trying to worry about what email is on which computer all the time…let alone trying to back it all up. A single location that stores all of my mail for as long as we both shall live is awesome…especially when it has some pretty good searching built right in.

  162. wtfigo? Says:

No email, no ftp; my account status shows no email/ftp accounts, nothing. Like it’s been wiped clean.

  163. gendou Says:

The problem is NOT resolved. I am still unable to ping my dedicated server! What a day….

  164. Head Meet Wall Says:

Webmail is working; POP3 is timing out (and has been since last night). :(

  165. Bill G Says:

Dreamhost you are like a pretend company…gimmmicks and low prices may grow the customer base for now…but eventually the word will spread and the Dreamhost name will be trashed…but keep doing funny blog posts…those help a lot.

  166. TX Says:

Dreamhost: We throw away your email but make up for it with good blog posts.

  167. Luna Says:

All the people who will be switching hosts, say I!

  168. Steve Says:

All the sites on our hosting package are still experiencing this issue even though it says resolved.

  169. Joanne Says:

My pop mail still will not go out.

  170. Hillarie Says:

    My panel is down…

  171. Fraser Says:

So how much of my inbound email is lost forever?

  172. OMG Says:

our entire site is gone. GONE.

  173. Javier Says:

My website is not working at all…..

  174. Javier Says:

    uhm…..i guess this is it?

  175. Beau Says:

MySQL and all that jazz has been sorted out, that I CAN confirm.

  176. In The Know Says:

    Your DNS got hammered?

That is hardly surprising considering you host the american nazi party web site on your servers.

Why are you hosting those scum!?

Do you realise they are a bunch of racist bigots who are openly soliciting people to go out and commit murder on the web site, a web site hosted by you!

    Shame on you dreamhost!!!

I hope your servers come under attack again and that they get taken off line!

Get those scum nazis off your servers dreamhost!!

  177. mad macadder Says:

    @In The Know:

That’s some brilliant detective work there brother. I had NFI. But I just confirmed it through whois.sc

Now that explains a lot. I can just see a lot of Jewish people, relatives of people who fought in WWII, free-thinkers, humanitarians, et al, all banding together to bring these bastards down, and the rest of us with them. Or maybe I’m just optimistic like that :/

Screw that. Been a while since I’ve read DH’s TOS, but I’m pretty sure one of the things they didn’t take out _was the bit about racist/hate-mongering sites being in violation of it_.

Fuck you, DreamHost. I’m outta here when the man coughs up at tax time. Sure it’s 6 months early, but seeing that little tidbit of information bothers me far more than the downtime itself.

  178. Mike Says:

I advise you to remove your head from Dreamhost’s ass to see the reality

Should I stick it up my own ass, as you’ve done with yours?

Just because it doesn’t state in Dreamhost’s TOS that it doesn’t refund for downtime, doesn’t mean it can just do whatever the hell the company wishes to do.

You’d be surprised at what they can do. They owe you NOTHING. Period.

Still have doubts? Print out the TOS, take it to a lawyer and ask them what this company owes you.

If Dreamhost decided to shut everyones account off, just because they can, and it’s not in the TOS that they cannot do such a thing,

    Of course they can.

then do you think we, the users, should just sit here and watch us get scammed for our money?

It would never happen. But… if you can’t afford more than $10/month for hosting, you can’t afford a lawyer. So, yes, you would just sit there and watch it happen.

Hosts shut down all the time. Notice that most haven’t been around as long as DH? And every time one shuts down, people lose everything that was on the server.

Or, a host can’t pay its bills and their servers get pulled. The data center or dedicated server supplier owes the host’s customers nothing and aren’t required to give anyone access to anything.

Mike, are you seriously saying that nowhere is it possible to research hosts, that there are no objective measures, that when people comment about uptime or downtime or test hosts all that is nonsense?

Host rating sites are there for one reason: referral fees.

It usually doesn’t take much work to figure out the highest rated sites often have $100+ referral fees and that some of the good hosts without affiliate programs fail to get mentioned.

Maybe some user reviews are real, but how many aren’t?

People think the whole DH forum is fake because of promo codes. So, how can anyone think that promo codes, which gives the money away, make reviews fake… but believe that a site built to generate cash is a good source of honesty?

Dreamhost you are like a pretend company…gimmmicks and low prices may grow the customer base for now…but eventually the word will spread and the Dreamhost name will be trashed

Yeah, they’re only one of the largest hosts in the entire world. They get bigger every single day. But you’re right, they’ll be out of business in no time. I see you’re really smart and did a lot of research. Good job.

That is hardly surprising considering you host the american nazi party web site on your servers.

I don’t know what 3rd world dump you live in, but in the US, there’s a thing called freedom of speech. Dreamhost respects it and hosts anything that is legal. Read the TOS that you should have read when you signed up.

If you think you see something illegal, then report it. Crying about it here isn’t going to do anything.

  179. In The Know Says:

Freedom of speech does not equate to freedom to break the law.. period

Inciting people to commit acts of violence and murder is against the law… even in the US… period

  180. ian Says:

Don’t forget they host anti-Nazi ones as well, I’d say there’s a good balance of free speech here… ;-)

Although at least two of those sites are down in the *continuing* problems. It is infuriating that they posted the issue closed hours ago when it clearly isn’t, or not notified a new issue if there is one. The support page is more honest and still shows the critical announcement - what’s the point of a status page that doesn’t get updated with status when there’s something so critical going on?

  181. ian Says:

Anyone noticed that they don’t show us the number of support requests queued any more? Ever since they updated the panel and were so happy to tell us the queues were almost gone. That used to be a good indicator of how f*cked up things were… I’m sure I can’t be the only one with a ticket over 5 hours old, sent since they posted that the issue was “resolved”. :(

  182. In The Know Says:

    Taken from dreamhosts own TOS:

    LAWFUL PURPOSE

    1. Customer may only use DreamHost Web Hosting’s Server for lawful purpose. Transmission of any material in violation of any Country, Federal, State or Local regulation is prohibited.

The solicitation of violence and murder is a criminal offence in the US

  183. Mike Says:

Again: “If you think you see something illegal, then report it. Crying about it here isn’t going to do anything.”

They’ve addressed some sites in the past and the accusations of illegal activity seemed to be weak. People tend to put emotions before facts when complaining about sites they disagree with.

Let’s see a DH-hosted site where someone is actually calling for violence. Note that wishing people were dead is not the same as calling for violence. You could say I wish everyone named Bob would die — and that is not the same thing as hiring assassins to take out every Bob on the planet.

Anyone that truly believes they know the law and has also correctly interpreted whatever the site says, should report it. If it stays up, you were probably wrong.

Anyone noticed that they don’t show us the number of support requests … That used to be a good indicator of how f*cked up things were

Actually, it was never a good indication of anything. There could be 1000 there, but if 950 of them are reporting the exact same thing, it’s meaningless.

Then you also have to minus out the tickets that aren’t even support-related, like help with 3rd party scripts, etc…

  184. Keven Says:

come ooon fellas.. just fix this.. pls.. jeje i have no complains fow ya, of a year been with you.. just 2 times had probs.. so yah.. just hurry da fu.. up!! jk jk jk..

its gonna be 3 days with out ma site.. bishes!

  185. alfred Says:

i cannot even see my website and email for over 24 hours, what the hell are you guys doing ? dun fix wat ain’t broken.

  186. jez Says:

haha I love the discussion that is going on here.
My website was down for 72 hours in May, 2007 - I got a 9,99$ refund, lucky me?

  187. alfred Says:

yes you are so lucky jez i paid one year in advance wonder how they are going to refund me though.

it has been a stable year before but just as i paid for the second one things happened…

  188. alfred Says:

anyway it’s nice to know so many out there in the same shoes as me haha.

  189. alfred Says:

apparently mike please fix the damn servers all i see is everything seems to be resolved but my site is still not visible ?

not trying to whine about anything here you guys have provided me a peaceful year before this i know it’s not a hit an run company however this is going to hit your business bad trust me i have been there before but i hope it’s not going to shut the service or business and i have to shift my website again duh~ i’m just running a blog not much damage to me but some of the guys are running a business here.

  190. sokari Says:

My site is still down since last evening at 10pm GMT+1 that i nearly 12 hours ago. Whats happening

  191. jez Says:

it’s probably something with the dns alfred? got external register like godaddy or somthing? was my problems in the case of downtime, their dns had gone mad with dreamhosts config..

  192. Adam Says:

@sokari: other than your blog software being broken, your site is fine.

  193. six Says:

my site was out for a couple hours or so last night (about 24 hours ago) i lodged a ticket after i had people ringing me asking where was the site.
i’m not sure whether to lodge another ticket, as i have no idea if tonights current non loading website is same issue that was apparently resolved or if its another issue
    :(

  194. Beau Says:

Mike, wanting a fair service of merchantable quality for a fair price is not “sticking my head up my own ass”.

However, nit picking at absolutely everyone who’s posted here with hatrid in attempt to defend DH when they are clearly a poor company is however, shoving your head straight up for DH’s ass.

  195. hardedge Says:

Urgent. Please someone help if you can.

My website and email have been down since thursday. My credit card expired and so the account was suspended but after I paid Friday it was supposed to be up in “one hour”! Now it’s been four days. My web panel won’t let me contact support and I have sent emails to billing from other people’s email accounts but no action. If someone can contact support for me I would be grateful.

    Dear dreamhost,

since a couple of days/weeks - every day there is a big problem with the connection. VERY BAD
Of course sometimes it is acceptable - Technic is technic - BUT EVERY DAY ???
We are absolute not happy and if the problem cannot fixed we must go. We are very sorry - but this is still a default problem and we pay for some domains. Nice to see the banner on the first site of dreamhost that there are 500.000 websites - but think about it: is it to much ??

Sorry but we are loosing readers every day.
    Gerd

  199. Slim Says:

    SQL and websites down. >:(

  200. ddugas Says:

is this still ongoing? I have had severe lag all night and into this morning. not clearing up on its own.

  201. Kevin Says:

Dreamhost, thank you for keeping us informed of the various problems as they arise. Other companies wouldn’t bother to inform their customers through a public medium like this. Also, thank you for attending to these problems as quickly as you do. With a large network finding the cause of problems can be quite a daunting task.

To the many people that sound upset and frustrated.. best of luck with your new host(s). I’ll hang around here and continue to receive the exceptional support that Dreamhost provides and will enjoy using some of the resources that your leaving will make available. ;-)

  202. Mike Says:

Mike, wanting a fair service of merchantable quality for a fair price is not “sticking my head up my own ass”.

Not being able to post without saying something wrong or stupid is what gives the impression of having your head up your ass. Calling them unethical because you feel like crying was the first clue.

You don’t get to rewrite the TOS at your convenience here, or at any other company on the planet.

However, nit picking at absolutely everyone who’s posted here with hatrid in attempt to defend DH when they are clearly a poor company is however, shoving your head straight up for DH’s ass.

You are still clueless. Some of you losers seem to think that if you all cry at the same time, then you all must be right. Not the case.

When someone points out you’re wrong, because you are, that’s not defending DH. It’s defending common sense, which needs all the help it can get here.

  203. ian Says:

My sites are back up, but one database that was down yesterday (on Stimpy) suddenly has one of its tables renamed today, breaking code. I can’t understand why, but I wonder whether a restore from backup has been involved somehow. It’s easily fixable, but the silence over what’s really been going on is unacceptable. If you don’t want to let us know the REAL status, why pretend to have a status page that does that? Just remove it already. The fact that the critical message still appears on the support page is obviously more honest.

  204. Mike Says:

They’re not going to write a novel on this page every time 1 of 500,000 sites has a problem.

The one host with a status page that allows user comments… and you think they’re hiding stuff. What a genius.

  205. ian Says:

    No, dumbass

They are hiding stuff when I get a message back from support saying “Sorry, we can’t see a problem with your site” when it’s been offline for ten hours and something they have done in that time has changed the database configuration.

  206. Mike Says:

If I was the dumbass, then I’d be the one doing the off-topic whining in a network post about how I can’t make my website work. Right, dumbass?

What’s the site? If it’s loading fine for them, it might load fine for everyone here as well.

There is no way that anything having to do with a network problem renamed your database or changed any settings. There’s more to this that you are either overlooking or leaving out.

  207. ian Says:

No, the dumbass is the one who’s replying to stuff from a position of supposed knowledge when he knows crap. And being a troll dumbass into the bargain. Some of us probably know more than you, which is why we don’t just hang around in blogs being obnoxious and trying to make ourselves look clever.

My websites work fine. But they’ve been affected by this DNS brownout for 10 hours longer than the “resolution” of the problem. In that time the webservers have been variously unavailable, then the SQL servers, and for a while one SQL server was returning an immediate non-connected error, NOT a DNS failure. So it was being reset, restored or whatever. Even a dumbass like you could figure out that if, when it finally comes back up, the database configuration has changed, then they’ve had to do something to get the server working again that has had unexpected side effects, and it’s very likely to have been related to the other issue which was affecting MySQL. Yet there’s no problem apparently.

If you’ve got nothing positive or useful to add to the thread then butt out. But it’s on-topic to note that the brownout was NOT resolved when they said for everyone, the support page STILL shows a critical error message 1 day later when there’s nothing here to explain why sites remained down after the apparent “resolution”, and the support response time is back to its old level of many hours. So there’s much more to this than they are telling us.

  208. Beau Says:

Mike, if you didn’t notice, your e-penis certainly isn’t growing any bigger; so do us all a favour and stop posting your nonsense in attempt to make yourself look like you actually know what you’re talking about.

  209. Mike Says:

Wow - two retards crying at the same time. You must be right!

Beau: The most basic aspects of web hosting are over your head. That explains why you needed to bring penises into the conversation. I don’t think anyone doubted your experience with handling penises… just your understanding of web hosting in general.

Ian: Did crying fix everything yet? If you were as smart as you pretend to be, you could have figured out that the things you are whining about are unrelated. But that would require that you use your brain for once, instead of your tear ducts.

If something is resolved, and your site is down after that, then shouldn’t common sense (not so common here) have told you that it’s time to contact support and see what the problem is?

Fill out another support ticket, but instead of crying and whining through it, submit SPECIFIC details about any problem you’re having. That’s how smart people do it, instead of throwing little sissy tantrums in off-topic blog comments.

Have you tried telling your mommies on Dreamhost yet? Booooo hooooooooooo.

Let’s see some more whiny little retard posts. Remember to cry off to the side while you’re typing, so you don’t short your keyboards out.

Mike, to be quite honest, you don’t understand Ian’s situation, nor what I was actually referring to; as you took it in such a literal substance.

If you had any idea whatsoever, you would have come to a realisation that I was speaking of your own stupidity you currently beam to fuel your ego.

One wonders how you can possibly write paragraphs after paragraphs reflecting your own ignorance.

I saw the pictures of the DH staff. I wish I didn’t.

DH was pretty much stable until like 6-8 months ago. A lot of these people seem to have joined DH in 2006. Coincidence?

We are not your guinea pigs. If you want to learn how to make a webhosting company alive and working, please do not use ourselves as your crash test dummies. There are 2 possible main reasons for all these problems: bad gear or bad button-pushers. Bad gear? Replace it. Bad button-pushers? Teach them how to do it, or replace them as well.

But please do not say it’s fixed when it’s not. This is probably worse than having a problem you can’t fix. You can’t restore backups of your credibility.

    I still cannot POP!

POP3 email has been intermittent/down for the entire day. As of 6:09PM EST, still down…

I see Beau the homo is still 100% clueless about hosting & life in general. That’s a real shocker.

Half of the stuff you idiots are posting about here has absolutely nothing to do with the network problem.

Contact support. That’s how you get things resolved–not by whining here like pathetic little babies.

Waaaa waaaaaa waaaaa!!!! Mommy, DH made me cry again! Waaaaaaaaa

How is it that this troll has been allowed to spew this crap for two days now with no moderation whatsoever? (And this board IS moderated.) Let me guess, Mike is the one moderating this place. Not only does Dreamhost provide terrible service, its employees apparently don’t think twice about using sexual orientation as a derogatory term. That is truly disgusting.

  248. Mike Says:

    Kringle, stop being a moron.

The trolls are the whining idiots that think this is their place to cry. THAT is trolling.

If it’s open to anyone to sit here and throw little baby tantrums, then it’s open to those of us that are over 12 to point out how stupid they are. How is that not fair?

And if you actually read the posts before crying like a little baby, you would have noticed that idiot felt the need to bring up penises–that’s where the homo talk came from.

I see you have no problem with the “fuck you” posts to DH, though. Big surprise.

I have never attacked anyone with a triple-digit IQ. You keep exercising your right to be stupid and others will exercise theirs to call you out for it.

No posts here turn ugly until some retard comes along crying about something that has nothing to do with anything.

Are you really so stupid that you think the comments section here is for unlimited whining? Get a clue.

    get a life man.

  250. Mike Says:

If posting “get a life man” is your idea of having a life, then no thanks.

    (sigh)
It never seems to amaze me how much people post their problems at these blog posts instead of just contacting support. Why do they think anyone is going to get to their job any quicker if they post up here? If Dreamhost had any ethics in business, they wouldn’t give a guy here any more attention than they would someone who uses the support line. Just because it’s public doesn’t warrant you more attention.
And since Dreamhost appears to do that, I would say that they seem to definitely be one of those companies with a good ethical model.
