Network Problems
We are currently dealing with network issues that are causing some downtime for some of our servers. The problem involves the private network between web/mail servers with their file servers. This appears to be affecting all clusters on some level. We are fixing everything now so some issues have cleared up and everything is returning back to normal. For those of you who had SMTP problems and receiving problems, you were affected by these issues. SMTP should be up, but we’re still cleaning up the network issues which should be resolved shortly.
Update: It appears that everything has been fixed. We’re still investigating the cause, but it appears that one of our Cisco devices decided out of the blue to start bridging some of our localized traffic. We’ll post another update once we manage to ascertain the root of the issue.

As of 6:01 Eastern still having SMTP or network problems affecting SMTP.
May 21st, 2007 at 2:03 pm
Is this affecting the servers as a whole, or just SMTP?
May 21st, 2007 at 2:04 pm
Seems to be affecting the whole server. I can’t view my page or SSH into my server at all.
May 21st, 2007 at 2:06 pm
cannot access any of our websites! getting the following error on every single domain:
“A communication error occurred: “Connection refused”
The Web Server may be down, too busy, or experiencing other problems preventing it from responding to requests. You may wish to try again at a later time.
May 21st, 2007 at 2:07 pm
Glad to hear it’s not just me.
Sucks though, and DH was on a role for up-time too

We apologize for the inconvenience. Please contact the webmaster/ tech support immediately to have them rectify this.
error id: “bad_httpd_conf” ”
on my site. Is this due to this outage or do I have another problem?
May 21st, 2007 at 2:12 pm
evian = completely dead. It pings but SSH refuses connections and HTTP requests play dead on me…
May 21st, 2007 at 2:15 pm
SMTP still not working at 3:16 PM PT.
May 21st, 2007 at 2:16 pm
Sigh. Figures.
I just made a bulletin to thousands and people and now it’s all broken and nothing works.
Great timing as ever. -_-
May 21st, 2007 at 2:17 pm
This is Very Very Ordinary!!!!. I have spent more time chasing up whether the server are up or not that getting to do some work.
You may have 500,000 domains now guys but for F#$%K sake get your shit together. Use the money from all those domains and buy some reliable gear or at leaast outsource it to someone who can handle the load. You guys obviously cant.
‘Dreamhost - Family owned hosting since 1997″ - Yeah and all they concentrate on is the family bit. Bugger the hosting!
May 21st, 2007 at 2:19 pm
No outgoing mail at 6.19 pm EST. Very frustrating issue that has been going on for 2 days now.
May 21st, 2007 at 2:20 pm
As of 6:16 pm Eastern there are still issues with SMTP on my account at least
May 21st, 2007 at 2:21 pm
This happens more often with dreamhost than seems reasonable. 4:20 pm MDT and smtp still not working….
May 21st, 2007 at 2:26 pm
The SMTP server is down, up, down, up and down again… Basically all day.
May 21st, 2007 at 2:26 pm
Well, everything (website, email etc) my end is working fine; running just as normal.
Ok, so Dreamhost may have some problems. It may have big problems, it may have small problems. They may last forever, or just a few minutes.
But at least we get told about them rather quickly.
I don’t understand why people are complaining so much. Yeah I find it frustrating too, but complaining here isn’t going to get you anywhere. At least comments are open - so you can at least report on how the problem is affecting you.
If you don’t like their service - go elsewhere! If your 90-day refund has passed - then you’ve obviously been with Dreamhost for long enough to know that problems really aren’t as bad as everyone makes them.
I’ve been with Dreamhost for almost a year, and have never had any problems to lead me to think I should go elsewhere. And yes, I’ve renewed for the next year coming.
I DON’T regret it.

my FTP server is down? on mug.dreamhost.com
May 21st, 2007 at 2:28 pm
Hmmm.. and maybe when you’re done with the SMTP server, you can set the clock on this server to Daylight Savings Time. It’s currently 3:30 p.m.
May 21st, 2007 at 2:30 pm
Yeah, my website went belly up sometime this morning. I tried running tests and contacting support to see if there was a specific problem, but those don’t work either. Might not be related, tho; I’ve got an old browser here at work that’s been having tons of trouble with the control panel ever since it’s been upgraded to shiny newness.
May 21st, 2007 at 2:31 pm
I agree with Emz, I have been with Dreamhost for about 4 years and have been very satisfied with their service. I posted my comment just as to say that I was still having problems, not to complain. Yes DH does have trouble occasionally (but so does everyone), but they are also pretty good to us as far as the things they offer.
May 21st, 2007 at 2:31 pm
As of 5:30 pm Central time (6:30 eastern), I still can’t get emails out via SMTP.
May 21st, 2007 at 2:32 pm
at this moment no one of users connact to my website, hop the DH team solved this prob, and i’m suuuuuur it will solved, hoppy whit-night
May 21st, 2007 at 2:32 pm
I’m still having smtp issues myself. 6:30 EST. Although this is the first time I’ve noticed any thing gone awry. Thanks for working the issue hard DH!!! I know how frustrating this can be.
To quote Emz….but I’ve been with DH since 2/03 and not really that many issues.
May 21st, 2007 at 2:32 pm
seriously, WHAT is going on??? it does seem that this sort of thing happens with dreamhost more than is to be reasonably expected…
i will pause before i renew this year. after hosting w/dreamhost for seven years, it still hasn’t gotten any better… considering how the company has grown, i don’t quite understand it.
May 21st, 2007 at 2:32 pm
The server Dawber is inaccessible as of 6:30pm Eastern. Thanks for keeping us informed.
May 21st, 2007 at 2:32 pm
make that 2/05 :o)
May 21st, 2007 at 2:33 pm
Still SMTP issues, if it helps to mention.
May 21st, 2007 at 2:35 pm
Hi,
I’m agree with Emz and Tarvos{k}. I’ve been with DH one year and half. Before come here I hosted my services in other hostings and, at the moment, I can say DH is the best. They bring us a lot of disk space, brandwith,… yes, I’m agree, sometimes thinga are wrong, but it happens in a lot of places!
And… in these other places do you have a support service like DH? I don’t think so.
I have some problems with mail. Ok. But I’ll not move my domains. They are Ok here.
May 21st, 2007 at 2:36 pm
3.35pm Pacific still have problems with SMTP
May 21st, 2007 at 2:37 pm
Interesting…. I am able to send/receive email via the webmail interface (at least it seems I’m able to send…dunno), but when I try to move a message out of quarantine I get all kinds of wierd errors. I’m able to delete messages from quarntine no problem, but if I want to take any out of quarantine it’s no go!
Oh - and I also agree with Emz. I’ve been with Dreamhost for goin’ on more than five years, I think. Problems are minor, infrequent, and staff is always helpful, cheerful, and hard working. Couldn’t ask for anything more!
May 21st, 2007 at 2:38 pm
Have major upgrades to put up on website… now I won’t be able to do it until tomorrow… nice downtime, guys… maybe some redundant clusters in there somewhere? Just a thought…
May 21st, 2007 at 2:38 pm
I’m having the same issue moving email out of the junk folder
May 21st, 2007 at 2:41 pm
Well, at least I’m still getting my spam even if I can’t send anything.
May 21st, 2007 at 2:42 pm
Friday, Sunday and now today - this is not a record of reliability that you should be proud of. If this continues we will have to find a different host as I suspect many of your other customers are contemplating.
May 21st, 2007 at 2:43 pm
Too bad your reliabiltity is coming into question more frequently these days.
May 21st, 2007 at 2:43 pm
Have been down for a while (hourr+) but seems to be working now.
May 21st, 2007 at 2:43 pm
We’ve been with dreamhost for nearly a year and though we love the packages offered, the prices, the one-click installs, and the dreamhost employees when things go down, the downtime itself is what causes us to consider going elsewhere.
There’s far too much downtime, there really is.
May 21st, 2007 at 2:45 pm
it work nowwwwwww, thanks a lot.
May 21st, 2007 at 2:45 pm
not able to receive any mail, still. how much longer?
May 21st, 2007 at 2:47 pm
Dreamhost. Yeah, it would be a dream if it would host a whole month without a crash of my site.
May 21st, 2007 at 2:47 pm
Still no luck — connection still refused — any time estimates?
May 21st, 2007 at 2:48 pm
SMTP been on and off for last 3 days… still out now.
May 21st, 2007 at 2:49 pm
still don’t work! :S
May 21st, 2007 at 2:52 pm
still dead as a doornail here. Just now that our site is in several CSS galleries… awesome…
May 21st, 2007 at 2:52 pm
SMTP still isn’t working for me. Tad bit frustration for sure.
May 21st, 2007 at 3:02 pm
SMTP on spacey was up for a while but it looks like its down again. Webservices on perrier was down but its back now. It’s like one of those Monkey Island minigames. You just have to time your use correctly and you won’t experience any downtime.
May 21st, 2007 at 3:04 pm
Status says: “We are fixing everything now so some issues have cleared up and everything is returning back to normal. For those of you who had SMTP problems and receiving problems, you were affected by these issues. SMTP should be up”
Not up. Not been up for more than a couple of minutes before going down again.
May 21st, 2007 at 3:04 pm
GIT R DONE DREAMHOST! I AM LOSING MONEY.
May 21st, 2007 at 3:12 pm
7:10 p EST — Can’t send mail again, same problem as one or two days ago. Intermittent service isn’t what we pay for.
