DNS reliability issues
For a short while now, our 3 main DNS servers have been experiencing some more troubles. We’re currently in contact with the load balancer vendor trying to get to the bottom of it all. We don’t currently have an ETA on when everything will be fixed, but until then you may experience intermittent issues connecting to your websites.

@shawn
Please explain how you would plan to back up DNS…
May 23rd, 2007 at 7:34 pm
why don’t all you people complaining just leave dreamhost already? i’ll take my downtime and love it. and i know it’s going to happen again.
May 23rd, 2007 at 7:36 pm
I like the self-proclaimed DNS experts. They are the funniest. ROFLCOPTER
May 23rd, 2007 at 7:52 pm
Stop whinging? Maybe if you have no traffic it’s not an issue, but having our website down for hours on end is a pretty f’ing big deal for us. I’m already signed up for MediaTemple’s grid service. I’ll be pulling the switch tomorrow and kissing DreamHost’s issues goodbye.
I’d be more generous if I hadn’t had major slowness yesterday affecting all of our sites (which DH admitted was another customer’s site causing the issue for us). The bad part was that it took them over 20 hours to get back to me on a site emergency, and we were having 30-second+ page loads. Not great.
I don’t care what size your business is, that’s no excuse for service like this. Simply terrible. I’m done with it.
May 23rd, 2007 at 7:53 pm
@AMB: I am not proclaiming myself as a DNS experts… just that I know I little more than the masses.
@Sam: True, this is indeed embarrassing for them and I am sure that they are most likely working actively on the issue.
and yes, this will be resolve, hopefully, within a decent amount of time. From my point of view, DNS are VERY important and can, and will, break any site for a extended period of time.
Good evening.
May 23rd, 2007 at 7:53 pm
yah….how is this only medium and resolved???……
May 23rd, 2007 at 7:54 pm
Man people, it happens…no matter what host you choose. I have been through about 8 in the last 10 years for one reason or another, so so far DH has been the absolute best, downtime included. At my last company we had multiple servers colocated at AboveNet and guess what, there are always problems. We had hardware failures, DNS servers going down, you name it. It sucks, and customers get pissed, but it’s the nature of the business, it happens…you can’t have everything 100% fail proof. Atleast they’re on top of it.
May 23rd, 2007 at 8:00 pm
to all: Before saying that Dreamhost is shit and that hosting compagnie X is better, use google.
For exemple: “Media Temple issue” give me a lot of result for a unstable network, outage and other.
and they also have their own issue with MySQL: http://weblog.mediatemple.net/weblog/2007/01/19/anatomy-of-mysql-on-the-grid/
May 23rd, 2007 at 8:56 pm
All of those who think DH is crap: Please leave. You’ll lighten the load. Thank you.
May 23rd, 2007 at 9:08 pm
Had this happened all the time, I would agree that DH is crap. But this has happened once, and that is now, in the two years I’ve been with DH. Frankly, I don’t see the problem.
May 23rd, 2007 at 9:09 pm
To all who complain about other customers complaining:
You do nothing but perpetuate this crap. . . People will continue to express their frustration by leaving comments on every single announcement page. Exactly who do you think you’re helping by continually stating the obvious; that other hosting companies have outages, too?
To me, it seems that the issues recently affecting DH this the last year or so are generally widespread and cause issues for most sites, servers, services etc. I primarily use my hosting alottment for email, so these DNS issues are a severe problem. I feel as though DH is buying crappy components. How many times does this have to happen before DH will switch to a different vendor for the offending device(s).
Lastly, to dreamhost: As others have previously stated, this issue is NOT of “medium” “severity”! Also, it is NOT “resolved”!
If my car catches fire, and after 4 hours the firemen are able to extinguish the flames. . . the issue is hardly resolved, eh!?! I’d also say that it’s hardly a “reliability issues” (i.e. it doesn’t work!!!).
May 23rd, 2007 at 9:24 pm
All indications I have - from personal experience over the last couple of hours - is that this problem is FAR FROM RESOLVED.
So why do you, Dreamhost friends, tell us misleadingly that it is?
Any why do you not do us the common decency of letting us know what the problem actually is?
Not a happy camper at the moment.

can’t access my website as well, living here in singapore.
this sucks.
May 23rd, 2007 at 9:25 pm
All my sites are down and do not resolve. So I would have to say that DREAMHOST, THIS IS NOT RESOLVED. I hope this doesnt turn into another days before we get service again, like that power thing a couple months back…
May 23rd, 2007 at 9:29 pm
does “resolved” mean that the DNS is fixed? ’cause I can’t get to my site either.
May 23rd, 2007 at 9:29 pm
This problem is definitely NOT fixed. I can’t get to my site at all. A problem with a system is bad enough, but saying it’s fixed when it’s not really is crap. No way can we tell if you’re fixing a problem or even know about it. GET YOUR ACT TOGETHER!!!
May 23rd, 2007 at 9:32 pm
hello???? not resolved here at all
May 23rd, 2007 at 9:34 pm
Web site’s up, it’s my mail server that’s unresolved…
May 23rd, 2007 at 9:35 pm
I concur, THIS IS NOT FIXED. I cannot access my site at all. The fact that Dreamhost says the problem is resolved when it’s not just adds insult to injury.
May 23rd, 2007 at 9:35 pm
Still isn’t resolved for me either. Two of my domains are down.
May 23rd, 2007 at 9:36 pm
ditto…. definitely not resolved…

DH is wonderful until this stuff happens. My sites are down NOW. “Problem loading page.” on all of them. I’m anxious to see them back up ASAP.
May 23rd, 2007 at 9:42 pm
c’mon guys, this is F rubbish, some of us have work to do..
May 23rd, 2007 at 9:43 pm
I always did’n t like to put NS and site to one hoster. Now all sites which host NS on Dreamhost are down. The rest works like a charm.
May 23rd, 2007 at 9:45 pm
DH: load balancing vendor… probably time to have some diversity in load balancing solutions…
DNS seems to be OK now.
May 23rd, 2007 at 9:49 pm
Well and truly fscked - still. Resolved my a$$:

still down…get it together!
May 23rd, 2007 at 9:53 pm
How on earth do 3 DNS go down.. what redundancy is that?
May 23rd, 2007 at 9:57 pm
I canceled my account last Saturday but I haven’t yet unsubscribed from the DreamHost Status RSS feed.
This is fun - kind of like coming back and visiting your buddies at the place you used to work - they’re all complaining about how bad everything sucks, while you’ve moved on - it’s good to see everyone but you’re glad you don’t work there anymore.
Anyway, just thought I’d drop in and say hi. I’ve been on my new host for almost a week now and my sites haven’t gone down at all - which is a very odd feeling, almost like anti-stress. I’m paying less than half of what I was paying here, too, and all my clients are happy again. Weather is beautiful, wish you were here.
May 23rd, 2007 at 9:59 pm
fixed here…finally!
May 23rd, 2007 at 9:59 pm
My sites have been gradually more up than down today, and are down right now. But you know what, for $10/mo. its still a good deal, I think. If it gets resolved by tomorrow, I’ll be a happy DH camper
May 23rd, 2007 at 10:00 pm
What the fuck is up with your nameservers, guys? No, the problem is not resolved.
It is impossible to reach panel.dreamhost.com, support.dreamhost.com, blog.dreamhost.com
and ANY HOST WHICH GETS NAMESERVICE FROM NS*.DREAMHOST.COM
This has been ongoing for HOURS.
Please drop the fucksticks and pick up some cluesticks and start beating each other with
those for a while.
Cordially,
Mr. Dissatisfied Customer

Many of my websites that are hosted in DH are still down….Please solve this asap because I dont want angry people pointing at me, and believe me, I am pointing to DH now.
I CANT CHECK MY EMAILS, I CANT CHECK MY WEBSITES, THIS PROBLEM IS FAR FROM BEING SOLVED.
Thanks!
May 23rd, 2007 at 10:02 pm
Doug! which host are you with now… throw us a bone here im tired of this BS.
May 23rd, 2007 at 10:04 pm
Anyone care to list some great reliable (but still reasonably priced) hosting co’s that offer unlimited domain hostings (or at least multiple domain)
May 23rd, 2007 at 10:07 pm
jason, good idea! lets list em up… i got my company visa debit card sitting right here and im ready to sign up elsewhere
May 23rd, 2007 at 10:08 pm
Lol same, I am refreshing eagerly for the latest plugs!
May 23rd, 2007 at 10:09 pm
me too
May 23rd, 2007 at 10:09 pm
STILL. BROKEN.
Thank god I’m moving my important sites to ServInt next week.
May 23rd, 2007 at 10:09 pm
Realistically, how many other hosting companies actually have an entire website dedicated to their outages?
May 23rd, 2007 at 10:13 pm
Realistically, How many other hosting companies NEED an entire website dedicated to their outages? I am really getting sick of all the downtime here!
May 23rd, 2007 at 10:13 pm
LMAO. Good point.
May 23rd, 2007 at 10:14 pm
Haha amazaing I can reach all of your websites it is your ISPs local DNS cache server
Locations I reached all of your websites from
LA
TX
VA
NC
So don’t be alarmed your websites are all running just fine you just can’t get to them until your local ISP gets their DNS entries updates from Dreamhost.
May 23rd, 2007 at 10:14 pm
OMG! Its Fixed.. Touch Wood..
Still any recommendations for alternate hosts for our ‘important’ sites would be greatfully reviewed.
May 23rd, 2007 at 10:15 pm
99% uptime guarantee! and we will be sure to put pictures of our morbidly obese children on the front page of our site just for you!
May 23rd, 2007 at 10:15 pm
after all the kak last year, everything working fine was such a relief - and now this!
Typically I have a major go-live today as well..
Panicking? Moi?
May 23rd, 2007 at 10:16 pm
“So don’t be alarmed your websites are all running just fine you just can’t get to them until your local ISP gets their DNS entries updates from Dreamhost.”
Well, no they’re not if many people can’t access them.
The real question to ask is: should this have ever happened in the first place?
May 23rd, 2007 at 10:18 pm
Hey Tony - I have sites spread across three different hosts: SiteGround, 1and1, and Infinology. Siteground has been the best for single, important sites but they only let you host one domain. Extra domains are $30 a year. It’s kind of a weird deal. Get this, though: they’ll send me e-mails saying “we’ve noticed the server your site is on is running a little slow, we’ll be moving your site to a much faster server”. The longest any of my sites have gone down with them is about 15 minutes.
I moved all my Dreamhost sites to 1and1 for $3.74 a month. So far so good. 1and1 has their fair share of bad reviews but I have all my domain names registered through them ($6 a year) and haven’t ever had a problem. That being said, they’re kind of hands-off. There’s no forum or community over there like there is here. I submitted a ticket to them with a MySQL question, kind of as a test, and they got back to me in under an hour. The sites I have running on them are humming along just fine, too.
Then there’s Infinology - located in L.A., just like Dreamhost. I have a few older sites with them but I’m going to be switching everything away before my year is up with them in August. I had a site hosted with them that got Digg’d and it crashed after only 17 Diggs. Not cool. Plus, they just generally kind of suck - I’m just not “feeling it” with them.
So, to summarize, if you have one really important site or just a few really important sites - go with Siteground. If you have a bunch of little client sites, go with 1and1. I prefer a combination of the two - really high traffic sites on Siteground, smaller dinkier sites on 1and1. Dreamhost was going to be my dinky-site host but in the less-than-three months I was here, I’ve had more problems than I’ve had in all my ten years of web development combined.
May 23rd, 2007 at 10:20 pm
Doug - Much appreciated reply… 1and1 has been in my sights for a while now and I am most likely going to pack up here soon and head there. I will also be looking at SiteGround. Thanks again and good luck!
Tony

Not only can I not access my sites, your account test panel is showing a bunch of DNS errors “You are using a non-DreamHost name server” “Your domain resolves to an IP address that is not located at DreamHost” for fully hosted domains.
This issue is not resolved.
