File server issues
If you’re on the spunky server cluster (check it in the control panel under Account Status in the upper right corner, your mail server would be listed as spunky), then you may be experiencing slow access to web and email, and may be having issues with your files (missing or wrong ownership) or users. We’re looking into this right now. We appreciate your understanding and patience, and apologize for all inconvenience this is causing you.
Update at 12:32pm Pacific: This is now fix, we’re cleaning up. If you’re still seeing problems, please contact us with as many details as possible (domain name, username, files missing, site slow, etc).

uff thanks for the info
June 5th, 2007 at 12:28 pm
After months of no issues for my websites, finally something is happening… interesting. But the thing is, I’m not experiencing any issues at all.
June 5th, 2007 at 12:29 pm
I think the reason why all of a sudden I couldn’t access my blog is because of this issue. I hope this gets resolved quickly coz I was in the middle of customizing my layout.
June 5th, 2007 at 12:30 pm
hopefully it works for the future. We have every day a problem (64.111.115.14 port 21 at dreamhost) and the error can fix fast. All domains down. Thanks a lot.

June 5th, 2007 at 1:13 pm

June 5th, 2007 at 1:51 pm
it’s now 1348 PDT and my site and my svn are STILL not operational
I don’t know where you’re accessing from but it ain’t working here
Error: PROPFIND request failed on ‘/OLM/Bulletin/trunk’
Error: PROPFIND of ‘/OLM/Bulletin/trunk’: could not connect to server (http://rudbekassociates.com)
June 5th, 2007 at 2:10 pm
I guess it’s resolved coz everything’s already back to normal for my blogs.
June 5th, 2007 at 2:45 pm
Can’t get into our control panel to send you information about the issue we are still having.
We are on chex. Files appear to be there when ssh to the server, but get the following error when attempting to connect to the domain name:
“Site Temporarily Unavailable
We apologize for the inconvenience. Please contact the webmaster/ tech support immediately to have them rectify this.
error id: “bad_httpd_conf” ”
And then any other actual file attempt to access, it comes up with a 404 error (even though the files are actually there).
June 5th, 2007 at 3:26 pm
Mhhh…. sounds as if the cluster got hacked?
June 5th, 2007 at 3:34 pm
Files are in directory but I am getting a 404 on my site. Please help.

June 5th, 2007 at 9:26 pm
Hrmm.. no mention on this DHS site about the FTP password security breach..
June 5th, 2007 at 9:48 pm
HEY DH how about updating your suggestions within webpanel - the most recent suggestion is dated 2 months ago!!!
June 5th, 2007 at 10:30 pm
It would be nice if there was an option to have ssh only accounts, *without* ftp access.
Ftp is a scourge. (yes I just got one of the ftp notification letters)
June 6th, 2007 at 12:32 am
There are intermediate errors with “relay access denied” and “unknown user” being showed as the cause, though I don’t this is related to the filer-issues though, or could it be?!
June 6th, 2007 at 2:59 am
Don’t know what just happened, my site was offline for two minutes and then came back and responding way faster all of a sudden…
Faster = good

@ barfu : “It would be nice if there was an option to have ssh only accounts, *without* ftp access.”
I think you can. Go to panel > users > manage users > edit username.. and you can select which option - FTP, SSH, or both.
June 6th, 2007 at 3:57 am
@Angry Dog - can you share more about that “FTP password security breach” issue?
June 6th, 2007 at 5:04 am
nothing about the FTP beach yet… why not?
June 6th, 2007 at 5:06 am
Email received on FTP “issue”:
This email is regarding a potential security concern related to your ‘not real account name’ FTP account.
We have detected what appears to be the exploit of a number of accounts belonging to DreamHost customers, and it appears that your account was one of those affected.
We’re still working to determine how this occurred, but it appears that a 3rd party found a way to obtain the password information associated with approximately 3,500 separate FTP accounts and has used that information to append data to the index files of customer sites using automated scripts (primarily for search engine optimization purposes).
Our records indicate that only roughly 20% of the accounts accessed - less than 0.15% of the total accounts that we host - actually had any changes made to them. Most accounts were untouched.

Still can’t send email.Spunky is my mail server.
Connecting SMTP server failed or is not responding. What’s up?
June 6th, 2007 at 9:09 am
I still can’t send my email either, and run on Spunky. I get a “Server configuration problem” as response from the mail server.
June 6th, 2007 at 9:12 am
I think it’s high time Dreamhost closed down the FTP port, or at least allow a user to so so. Enable SFTP and SSH only. And people, if you are SSHing from command line, I highly recommend aliasing your “ssh user@server.dreamhost.com” as there is a sneaky someone in the Bahamas called dreMAhost.com. Watch for the RSA key warning nonetheless.

Problems starting here now…off and on it seems… I will keep digging into the settings here on my end to see whats up.
June 6th, 2007 at 9:16 am
You said that the file server problem was fixed, but I’m on the Spunky server and I can’t send any e-mails. When I try to send something a “Server configuration problem” error comes up.
June 6th, 2007 at 9:25 am
we still have problem on sending and receiving email. we are on spunky mail server.
June 6th, 2007 at 9:33 am
I’m not even on spunky, I’m on spacey mail server and I cant receive or send email. Hope it can be resolved soon! =)
June 6th, 2007 at 9:36 am
Ok, make that can RECEIVE email, just cant SEND email on spacey.
June 6th, 2007 at 9:42 am
Cant send mail here either. God dam it. I just started using the dreamhost outgoing servers again and as usual there is a problem. Back to the local ISP outgoing mail once again.
June 6th, 2007 at 9:46 am
Error: (I did report this on a normal ticket)
The message could not be sent because one of the recipients was rejected by the server. The
rejected e-mail address was ‘koakes@newenglandstone.com’. Subject ‘test2′, Account:

Response: ‘450 Server configuration problem’, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 450,
Error Number: 0×800CCC79
June 6th, 2007 at 9:52 am
Either this outgoing mail issue is resolved or it is not effecting 100% of my users.
June 6th, 2007 at 10:19 am
Still saw some mail issues this morning. But worse, my site is still dog slow (ticket issued). I think the problems are with the puss database server, but I really have no idea. I have a gallery2 installation and on a good day (like for a brief time yesterday) moving from picture to picture is nearly instantaneous. Today we’re looking at 30+ seconds to load. Users are not happy. Actually users are just giving up.
But I haven’t lost faith in the Dreamhost support people. They always come through in the end. Bumps are inevitable.
June 6th, 2007 at 10:54 am
grr… my site is hella slow today.
June 6th, 2007 at 11:02 am
I’m on the spacey cluster and my site is dragging…timing out, hosed.. again.
June 6th, 2007 at 11:19 am
My sites are extremely slow today, and the Panel hangs at “Please wait while we submit your ticket”! How can I report a problem reporting problems with the panel?
June 6th, 2007 at 11:21 am
My domains are excrutiangly slow today as well. There would seem to be a general problem affecting many users, although no news has been posted here about the issue. Issued a ticket nearly 5 hours ago and haven’t received a reply yet - the support team are usually quicker than that, which would seem to confirm a general problem.
June 6th, 2007 at 11:22 am
What does the word YES mean after the word RESOLVED?
Thanks.
June 6th, 2007 at 11:28 am
Mail crashes everytime I use it.
June 6th, 2007 at 2:13 pm
I’m in the spunky cluster and both mail and shell have been intermittently down today for me too. Right now I can’t even load a basic web page from my site. DH - please update the status page.
June 6th, 2007 at 2:35 pm
My Subversion is non-responsive again…one of my clients just called to tell me
June 6th, 2007 at 2:47 pm
I guess today wasn’t a great day to start hosting a new domain; ftp, webpanel, site is extremely slow.
June 7th, 2007 at 2:37 am

My site has been down for a week now and attempts to email the website developer keep being returned as undeliverable. Would someone please let me know what is happening.
December 23rd, 2007 at 1:00 am
I think the reason why all of a sudden I couldn’t access my blog is because of this issue. I hope this gets resolved quickly coz I was in the middle of customizing my layout.
